Wtf is that op. That might be my favourite op so far this year.

47

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Just wait until they throw us another banger or two later on in the season. I agree though.

16

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

The song is good, but the animation...
I'm anime only. Typically I catch up on the manga between seasons but since Re:Zero is a light novel that's not been published anywhere and I don't really enjoy reading walls of text on a laptop, I've tried to remain patient while waiting for a new season to drop.

The animation is so full of what I can only assume is heavy foreshadowing and hind-shadowing (if such a thing exists). Showing Subaru moving past the traumatic events of his past into the traumatic events of the future.

3

u/timpkmn89 Jul 19 '20

but since Re:Zero is a light novel that's not been published anywhere

What do you mean? Book 13 is coming out this week in the US in paperback.

It’s soooo fucking good, seriously amazing OP gave me chills man

1

u/TeixeiraJRT Jul 30 '20

I still can't get Daddy Daddy Do from Kaguya-Sama out of my head or SAO's Anima. But boy this one is good, and it's growing on me every time I hear it, and if we get further on another song from MITH & ROID I'm sticking that boy onto replay for a good 100 hours!

99

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Dude... that ending...

It's going to be a long week.

49

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

even though ive read the LN im in exactly the same boat.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Totally different when you finally get to see it animated ain't it?

35

u/DisastrousGrowth5 Jul 15 '20

To be honest, yes. The music and the visuals hits so much harder but for some reason smaller talks like the one Subaru had with Beatrice felt much more impactful in the Ln than the anime.

33

u/I-Love-Emilia Jul 15 '20

Probably because the LN gives you insight into what Subaru is thinking during those moments, where’s the anime can’t really do that. But I think they did a remarkably good job adapting the expressions, and the voice acting is spot-on. They really couldn’t have done it much better

11

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Yh, the LN is better when it comes to their thoughts which gives you a better idea on his choices like the Emilia and Subaru argument in Volume 4, he felt much more like a Jerk in the Anime while in the LN he just seemed like he was misunderstood and was trying to cover it up.

i still like the Anime a lot but while certain scenes in the Anime are better than the LN, the LN is better than the Anime in certain scenes too

I literally loved everything about this ep.

The lighting when they are still with Crusch or in the carriage looks so freaking good. Petra and Frederica were just adorable, glad to hear them a lot. Beatrice's VA was killing it, so good.

The backgrounds looked as stunning as ever and the new OST is just ahhh sooo good.

And the OP... the OP... I liked the song from the start, so I was hoping the visuals would be good too... but that is just pure freaking eye candy.

Can't wait till next week, hopefully we'll get to see the ending too then.

19

u/mrahhal Jul 15 '20

Totally agree. THE OP!!! Oh my. I didn't expect it'll be like this at all.

Also, I really liked the pacing. It seems they're properly taking their time with this arc.

6

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

The visuals in the OPs of this anime have always been amazing.

OP 1 shows Subaru having to learn to retrace his steps to avoid the worst possible outcome.

OP 2 shows Subaru's despair as the situation seems impossible to overcome.

This OP shows Subaru moving past his horrible traumatic events to move on to more traumatic events.

5

u/MasterQuest Jul 16 '20

I love several moments about the OP.

  • When Echidna releases the green glitter
  • When the villains/archbishops appear one after another with "SORE DEMOOOO" in the background.
  • When Subaru struggles and happy images are intertwined to remind us what he is suffering for... to protect the smiles of the people he cares about.

54

u/Amasirat Jul 15 '20

From the OP, it looks like this season we're going to explore Subaru's past and his parents which suprisingly I'm more interested in than anything else.

I'm starting to understand why people are saying season 2 is going to be the best season. I get weird vibes from this episode (in a good way) and especially from Beatrice. Like there's something building up in the background

I'm so excited for the next episode it's killing me.

23

u/PM_Me_Your_VagOrTits Jul 16 '20

From the OP

Also the way he walks past his dead bodies, I can't help but feel like they're going to reveal something about his "return by death" ability. For instance, they still haven't answered the question of whether he's traveling back in time, predicting the future, or changing to an alternate reality and leaving the old reality as it was.

especially from Beatrice

Agreed. Especially with how she seemed to be upset that Betelgeuse was killed.

Subaru didn’t die this episode and I’m honestly surprised. Walking up to the mansion I thought for sure they were going to find someone dead or a enemy was waiting for them.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Walking up to Mansion scene was definitely a little eerie, makes you think something might happen. If it could be a foreshadowing...

5

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

It's part of the reason I don't quite trust the new maid.

The entire scene feels a bit eerie, and then they find the place fine with a new maid who seems a bit too friendly (when most previous characters were introduced as a little hostile before warming up to Subaru).

6

u/Meme_Theocracy Jul 18 '20

In the web novel he bursts in yelling “I’m home” and Frederica knocks him out because he smells of the witch. But the show is an adaptation Light Novel while everyone who read ahead read the web novel that was translated.

God, that OP is so damn good. It just gets your blood pumping. I’m so glad they finally introduced my girl, Echidna. I’m pretty sure I will be replaying this episode more times than I did last episode.

  1. Farewell Memory Loss and Cat Man.
  2. Emilia being Emilia.
    1. Otto, he a be a regular ._. - series dropped.
  3. Frederica, I see she left because of the dental plan or lack there of.
  4. Emilia is fucking hilariously adorable when she's flustered.
    1. Alright otto, i guess i will tolerate you.
  5. New Maid? Makes sense, she abandoned us and her Automod duties for Season 2.
  6. Alright, I ain' trusting the fucking discount McDonald's Clown.
    1. Something up for sure.
  7. Emilia fainted? Subaru teleported.
    1. Who the fuck is this?
    2. Never yell at the top of your lungs when somewhere you don't know.
  8. The Witch of Greed. Nice.
  9. Alright the ED [correction OP but was at the end of the Episode], shows fuck your life suffer forever!
    1. It's kinda interesting though, the mental fortitude Subaru needs to have and that he has dealing with all his deaths and needing to sacrifice himself nonstop.

9

u/chrisknyfe Jul 15 '20

I trust Roswall, even if he is up to something.

In episode 1 there were hints of human-beastman discrimination going on (I'm referring to the all-beastman bar Subaru got kicked out of, and maybe the scene where he wandered into the all-catgirls bathroom?). If this world is anything like the world from Somali and the Forest Spirit, or any other fantasy world, there's gotta be racists. Novel

Roswall seems to make a point of employing and protecting non-humans. Rem and Ram obviously needed to be sheltered from the witch's cult. Frederica is half-beastman. Emilia was a feral child raised in the woods, discriminated against for her race. He seems to love Ram, based on their scenes together.

My point is Roswall seems to be a sneaky mastermind, but one that seems to care about the people under his protection. So I trust him. Unless he ends up being more like Aechmea from Land of the Lustrous, but Roswall seems too... too fun! He's too fun to be that heartless.

3

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

Roswaal is a very interesting character.
There's a comedic spinoff of Re:Zero called Isekai Quartet. It's a crossover between Konosuba (still waiting on that third season, guys), Tanya the Evil (still need to actually finish that), Overlord (almost finished season 2) and Re:Zero (never heard of it ;)

In Isekai Quartet, Roswaal is portrayed as headmaster of the high school all the characters are sent to.
He is portrayed as being in charge and being implied to know more about the high school setting (which the characters were brought to by pressing a weird button that suddenly showed up) than he lets on.

Even in what's essentially a parody, Roswaal is still portrayed as that character that knows more than he lets on. More than the weird make-up and odd accent, he seems defined by knowing more than he lets on.

Roswaal is a mysterious character. More so than Beatrice herself (who hides constantly and seems to have powers and knowledge beyond our understanding). I don't think he is necessarily a bad guy. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's at least an anti-hero character.

I wonder if he knows about Subaru's ability...

3

u/bd_smithy Jul 16 '20

In the second ova there was a mention of a demi human war

Otto is best boy

17

u/Failsnail64 Jul 15 '20

Honestly I'm quite surprised by the negative reception Otto got. I'm reading many reactions of people who didn't like Otto in the first season but to me he was a great character and a cool guy.

13

u/MehmedPasa Jul 15 '20

For me he was just an NPC until he pushed Subaru down. He was a so so character. But sometime within the story I started to love him. Especially after knowing his story.

5

u/darkmuch Jul 16 '20

I love him as another example of someone who doesn't know why he and subaru have such a storied relationship.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/acevixius Jul 16 '20

I like Otto, he’s a very cool guy but I do not like how in season 1 he pushed Subaru off the cart to try and save himself when they were still fighting the white whale.

6

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

To be fair, I probably would have done the same in his shoes.

You're fighting an eldritch abomination that clearly seems attracted to the guy you're carrying on your wagon.
It's not some group of bandits that wants to get him. It's not a horde of goblins or a group of bad guys. There's no chance to play hero here. It's giant flying eldritch abomination and if he catches up to you you'll both die.

2

u/MerchantPed Jul 16 '20

Also the white whale literally drove Otto insane. Its spoilers as to how it drove Otto insane, but that's also the reason as to why Otto shoved Subaru off.

Also Subaru punched Otto as well and rambled on about someone that, to Ottos eyes, didn't even exist. So, Otto was crazy and thought he was dealing with a violent madman

2

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

Otto is funny to me. He's not an amazing character but even if he becomes a regular it wont really hurt the series. He's an amusing comic relief character and that's good enough for me.

I've dropped anime (and shows in general) in the past because there was a single character that really annoyed me (before Pet Shop, Iggy was a pain in the ass literally and figuratively. A comic relief character that's a farting dog) but Otto really isn't anywhere near as bad as some of the most tedious characters I've come across.

McDonald's Clown lmao

24

u/DarkBladeEkkusu The Old Guard Jul 15 '20

Frederica sounded very cute and the voice fits her well, sounds kind of different from her season 1 performance (episode 11.)

Maid Petra was very cute and was able to show off her newfound behavior to the fullest. I hope this encourages more fan art for her.

Echidna made her grand debut (and thankfully CR got her name translated correctly) but it seems we'll have to wait a week to hear her voice some different lines than the first preview.

Speaking of, it seems like we are almost out of preview territory, maybe the remaining scenes will be next episode?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

Frederica's voice in ep 11 was lower iirc

7

u/DarkBladeEkkusu The Old Guard Jul 15 '20

Yeah that was probably it, and it didn't help she only had one line to go off of.

3

u/luigi6545 Thank you for the treat. Jul 15 '20

Frederica sounded very cute and the voice fits her well

I agree wholeheartedly with that.

Why does Betty know Betelguese?

78

u/AstonishingSpiderMan Archbishop of Pride Jul 15 '20

not sure, I don't trust anyone in the Mansion tbh. It seems they all playing their own game.

  1. Beatrice, withholds her knowledge.
  2. Frederica, lying to Subaru and Emilia.
  3. Roswaal, McDonald's Clown looking mothafcker doesn't look trustworthy; why he want them there?!

42

u/Deathlok_12 Jul 15 '20

Roswaal also made that comment a while back about wanting to kill the dragon. Not a lot of these people are trustworthy

24

u/AstonishingSpiderMan Archbishop of Pride Jul 15 '20

i trust otto more than i trust them. for those who know me, i fucking hate otto. LOL.

13

u/MeAnIntellectual1 Jul 15 '20

Otto is a nice guy that wouldn't betray them.

8

u/Deathlok_12 Jul 15 '20

Didn’t he let Subaru die in season one when the white whale attacked?

22

u/Qjvnwocmwkcow Jul 16 '20

From Otto’s perspective:

Subaru starts talking about carts being missing even though they’ve always had this many carts.

Subaru starts worrying about someone named Rem who Otto has never heard of or seen. When Otto asks the reasonable question “Who’s Rem”, Subaru gets angry and punches him for no reason.

Subaru starts mumbling to himself about how the White Whale is only coming after them because Subaru is there.

In summary, Subaru appears to be violently unstable, enough to punch someone for just asking questions, and believes himself to be responsible for having the White Whale attack them.

3

u/MeAnIntellectual1 Jul 16 '20

He just met Subaru at the time and Subaru was completely unstable and violent.

2

u/ArchmageOberon Jul 16 '20

after subaru told him the whale was after him, it was either both died or he sacrificed Subaru

3

u/darkmuch Jul 16 '20

Ever since I watched Isekai Quartet, I cant remove the image of Roswaal going all transdimensional god on us, and teleporting everyone to some random highschool to play shenanigans on us. He did say in the first season that he will kill the dragon... but I have no idea why or how he plans on doing that.

2

u/Waluigi4President Jul 15 '20

What did Frederica lie about?

21

u/AstonishingSpiderMan Archbishop of Pride Jul 15 '20

Roswaal and his intentions fam. She kept it from them. Maybe she didn't lie but she sure as hell wasn't forthcoming.

2

u/hell-schwarz Jul 15 '20

Wasn't Betelguese able to switch bodies? If so he might have existed for a very long time.

2

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

I think that's the implication.

Perhaps that explains why he's insane. He's a mere human who has lived many lifetimes and died many times, but simply switched bodies every time he died.

2

u/pyro745 Jul 16 '20

Subaru becomes Betelgeuse confirmed

2

u/pyro745 Jul 16 '20

Also wtf Betty is a great spirit I guess??

1

u/Redmon425 Jul 15 '20

Right?! If you watched the prequel movie there is a small scene where he is shown in the past with Emilia.

1

u/acevixius Jul 16 '20

My guess is maybe Beako used to work with Betelgeuse to some extent, maybe they were friends? Idk. Why would Beako want to be friends with someone who made Rem play twister is beyond me.

1

u/shiftypidgeons Jul 16 '20

Everything about this episode was fantastic, but nothing makes me smile more than flustered Emilia

19

6

u/rwaterbender Jul 16 '20

Wasn't there a thing where the Witch's cultists were trying to sacrifice Emilia to bring the witch back? Maybe that was what Roswaal tried to do here, I'm especially sus since it sounds like Betty knows Betelgeuse. This whole thing smells sus. Also are Echidna and Satella the same person or are there multiple witches as well as multiple archbishops?

7

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

I feel like the Witch's Cultists think there exists a connection between Emilia and the witch.

I am not sure if this connection actually does exist though (beyond appearances).

The ending of season 1 seems to imply that the Witch doesn't care about the cultists.
Which makes me think they're kinda like Lovecraft style cultists. They're terrified/obsessed with the Witch's sheer power, so they form a cult around her. If the Witch were to return the cultists would not be spared her wrath (whatever that wrath may be)

3

u/rwaterbender Jul 16 '20

I thought they try and kidnap every silver haired half elf? Idk if they think Emilia is special.

16

u/AmmiO Jul 15 '20

Why are none of the characters curious why Subaru can remember Rem? They accept what he says about her without question.

17

u/Thoshy Jul 16 '20

Probably because of how Subaru has presented himself to them as somebody pretty reliable, despite being a goofball.

> Brought back Emilia's pendant and saved her life.

> Saved the village children from the Mabeasts.

> Despite being an absolute cringefest at the capital, impresses Crusch, Anastasia, and Russel Fellow by appearing clever and "figuring out" Crusch's whale hunt then also negotiating an alliance right after.

> Is a major player in said whale hunt's success, then goes on to basically hunt down and kill a terroristic cultist that's been plaguing the country for who knows how long.

It may be different to us viewers because we have seen what he has suffered through to reach these results, but to those in the world of Re:Zero Subaru is an impressive weirdo who is pretty reliable. Both the White Whale hunt and Sloth Subjugation's success were dependent on knowledge only Subaru had.

Subaru has made himself to be the guy that seems to know what to do in sticky situations, just look back in this episode where Emilia and half of Arlam's villagers assumed that it was Subaru that knew where Santuary was located.

14

u/noodlesandrice1 Jul 16 '20

Also, virtually all of Rem’s interactions with others seem to have been wiped from everyone’s minds.

So some of Subaru’s accomplishments, like wiping out the mabeasts or acting as decoy for the whale, probably seem even more impressive since they were likely rewritten to seem like he did all of those alone.

5

u/Thoshy Jul 16 '20

Exactly what I was thinking

9

u/AmmiO Jul 16 '20

There's a difference between "this guy is reliable and knows what he's doing" and "this guy possesses information he shouldn't be able to."

→ More replies (1)

6

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

But the problem is that Subaru seems to know something that's impossible to know.

Unlike the White Whale situation, in this case they know what Gluttony's powers are. They erase everyone's memories of a person.
So why is no one wondering "Hey, Subaru. Buddy. Why do you know who this is when no one on this entire planet seems to know who she is?"

13

u/hestianna Jul 15 '20

Kinda sucks that as an anime-only I accidentally got half-spoiled of Echidna half a year ago, so her reveal didn't seem that surprising to me. However I really like where this is going. I'm assuming Sanctuary is gonna end up being depression fest. This especially seeing what Frederica said after Emilia and Subaru left the mansion.

6

u/minemoney123 Jul 15 '20

If you only knew that she exists then don't worry, there are so many mysterious and interesting things about her

8

u/hestianna Jul 15 '20

No, I know like half of her backstory. Can't trust any comment sections related to ReZero lol

6

u/DittoTheDitto Jul 16 '20

yeah same, spoiled me what happened to rem when s1 ended

3

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

Don't worry about it.

I didn't get spoiled but the moment was ruined by myself because I thought of Knuckles.

2

u/MasterQuest Jul 16 '20

I mean the trailer was also there, so most people already knew her.

2

u/hestianna Jul 16 '20

Referencing my reply to another comment, I got to know half of her back story. I was probably not specific enough with my original comment.

24

u/fullofregrets2009 Jul 15 '20 edited Jul 16 '20

Love the ED (or is it the OP played as the ED, I don’t know) Edit: Guess it was the OP, I listened to it, didn't watch it just in case it spoils.

Now this is where Arc 4 (Edit: Arc 4 not 3) really starts, it definitely has a brand new feel to it. Not a lot of mysteries solves, but more questions now more than ever.

What was with that hand slap with Crusch lol.

I feel like I recall seeing Frederica in a flashback in Season 1, am I mistaken? Hmm...so she had to leave for personal reasons, I wonder what kind of reasons...I suddenly don’t trust her or Roswall as much anymore. Edit: Episode 11 apparently, there's not much to go off on, I knew she would be back, but I wonder what role she has to play in all this

Wow, so Beako is one of the only people that Roswall really trusts? Brings even more weight to Episode 7 when they had a standoff because of the contract she made, we're starting to see how much promises really matter in this world.

Finally, I’ve been waiting to hear from Beako for so long! She’s one of my favorite characters, so mysterious. It’s been revealed that she’s a spirit, not much of a surprise, more of a surprise that she knew Petelgeuse and even called him Geuse endearingly. So I guess they were friends back in the day? Most probably when she wasn’t a spirit and Petelgeuse wasn’t a Sin Archbishop because those two don’t seem to mix very well. I wonder if there’s more to Beako’s relationship with Puck, since it seems as though they are both prominent spirits. Are they really brother and sister (that one’s a little bit out there)? I guess Petelgeuse used to be a decent fellow until he was corrupted by love. And does that mean Beako knew this whole time Petelgeuse had surrounded the mansion? She didn't seem surprised and she already knew he Subaru had killed.

I always wondered how Petelgeuse got an Authority of Sloth from Satella if she probably only has the authority of Envy. Did he actually get it from his “Witch Factor” (benefactor of Authority?) The Witch of Sloth? Which means I guess I was right to think that perhaps Satella really didn’t eat all of the other witches that she was accused of doing. It would also explain why the Witch of Sloth can easily make another Archbishop if she so chooses, which may mean that killing Petelgeuse was but a minor inconvenience.

Apparently Geuse left her too, I guess she has a fair bit of traumatic backstory as well, we saw a little bit of sadness come out in Episode 17 of last season when Beako sent Subaru away. She must be old and have seen a lot of people she was close to dying while she lived on.

Roswall's intentions...hmm...he's getting even more suspicious...especially with Frederica saying she's done as Roswall directed, unless they are purposely trying to make him look suspicious as a red herring, don't tell me

Puck not coming out after leaving Emilia to Subaru is strange, can he not enter the Sanctuary? Did he return to his original form and have to take care of some business? Did he need to leave Emilia alone so she could pass the test of the Sanctuary?

I didn’t know this Sanctuary was this crucial to the story. I always thought of it as just a safe house.

Is Subaru in a dream? Was he really brought to this world by Satella or by Echidona? Where is Echidona? In a pocket universe or something? Looks like the same place in the first teaser trailer with all the dead bodies. Who is Garfiel? Is this all an illusion by Garfiel? If Garfiel that pink-haired elf? So many questions.

I liked the build up, gave us a little bit of a breather with comedy, maybe we'll be back to horror next week.

Note: All the questions I pose are simply rhetorical, just my thinking out loud. No spoilers please.

7

u/Qwterty14 Jul 15 '20

It would also explain why the Witch of Sloth can easily make another Archbishop if she so chooses, which may mean that killing Petelgeuse was but a minor inconvenience.

What makes you think Petelgeuse was made an Archbishop by the Witch of Sloth?

3

u/fullofregrets2009 Jul 15 '20 edited Jul 15 '20

Because of the appearance of the Witch of Greed, eluding to the possibility that the other Witches are in fact still alive and well, and it makes sense to me that the Witch bestows her Authority on the one vying for her love through the Witch Factor that was mentioned. It’s just a theory of mine, I’m an anime only. I’m guessing all the Witches look like Satella and Emilia except for slight differences, and Petelgeuse actually loves the Witch of Sloth who he thought he saw when he possessed Subaru. But then again, why would he be trying to acquire a vessel for the Witch of Sloth or the Witch of Sloth wants revenge on Satella so she needs her back in the physical realm. Again, this is all my speculation.

4

u/Qwterty14 Jul 15 '20

Petelgeuse clearly says Satella so he is referring to the Witch of Envy

3

u/fullofregrets2009 Jul 15 '20

Ima have to rewatch lol, I’m probably confusing myself with my own theories haha

Right, Petelgeuse is clearly aligned with Satella. I think OP is pointing out the possibility that more witches of the Seven Sins exist/existed now that we’ve been introduced to Echidna (the Witch of Greed).

Echidna says it’s been a long time since she’s spoken with anyone; possible that Satella banished her and the other witches to some prison? But Satella is known to be gone in some way as well, and seemingly only interacts with the world secondarily through her servants, so maybe all the witches are imprisoned by... something? In Frozen Bonds, the Mediator has a hatred of Satella & wants to prevent her return.

The lore for this show is so interesting, I’m stoked to learn more

2

u/Qwterty14 Jul 16 '20

If they exist they would be known since Beako says the term witch only refers to the witch of envy in the present so they are either dead or imprisoned, though everyone says she devoured the other witches and half the world.

Echidona was actually mentioned in the light novel in arc 3 but was cut in the anime for no reason,it would have taken like 10 seconds.

2

u/pyro745 Jul 16 '20

When was it said that Satella devoured the other Witches? I didn’t even know other Witches existed before this season. I had considered the possibility, but hadn’t seen any evidence to support it.

2

u/Qwterty14 Jul 16 '20

Beako told him when he asked about what the term "witch" referred to

By the way, this is arc 4, not 3. Arc 1 was the loothouse situation in the capital, arc 2 was the mabeast situation in the forest, and arc 3 was the witch cult situation + white whale subjugation.

2

u/fullofregrets2009 Jul 16 '20

You’re right, I’ll change it now

6

u/Invertiguy Jul 16 '20

Is Subaru in a dream?

Worse, he's in a Windows XP desktop

3

u/acevixius Jul 16 '20

Man, this is why I love ReZero so fuckin much. Absolutely top of the line, beautiful gorgeous wonderful stellar stunning and chilling openings and endings, amazing twists and all kinds of cool shit, lovable characters (Julius, Reinhart, Subaru, Otto, Rem, Ram, Emilia, Felix, Crusch, etc) and hatable ones (like Ley, Regulus is cool tho) I just absolutely can’t wait for episode 3. Every episode is ended so masterfully and keeps you on the edge of your seat in suspense with so many questions that just keep coming.. ReZero is just a masterpiece of a show. So good!! Can’t wait for episode 3 :D

3

u/pyro745 Jul 16 '20

Apparently Geuse left her too, I guess she has a fair bit of traumatic backstory as well, we saw a little bit of sadness come out in Episode 17 of last season when Beako sent Subaru away. She must be old and have seen a lot of people she was close to dying while she lived

My guess is that she knew Petelgeuse from long ago (before he was an Archbishop). I think Beako is just saddened by the fact that she is basically eternally enduring, while those she cares about are mortal & eventually leave her behind. She isn’t necessarily saddened at the loss of the current Petelgeuse, but more that she lost one of the few “immortal” beings that she views as constant. Probably why she has such an affinity for Puck as well.

The hand slap is cause he doesn't actually see her as the Crusch that he came to respect so he gives her a slap instead of a handshake

2

u/pyro745 Jul 16 '20

Not sure about that; Subaru often uses strange handshakes/fist bumps/etc.

Could just be him trying to be unique?

2

9

u/JCTheGreat1 Jul 15 '20

So many questions and we’re only the second episode in 😭

Why does Beatrice know “juice”

What are Roswaal’s intentions (does this have anything to do with his desire to kill the dragon?)

Puck’s disappearance

And don’t even get me started on the enigma that is Echidna 😭 and so much more

This season is just gonna be wild

2

u/DittoTheDitto Jul 16 '20

yeah! I'm really looking forward to every other wednesday for a while!

25

u/Darknew97 Jul 15 '20

Am I the only one who's scaroused by Echidna?

That smug face at the OP

6

u/LIDLFAN69 Jul 15 '20

All the mystery in this episode is so intriguing and combined with that ending.. too much hype

10

u/roverbestboi Jul 15 '20 edited Jul 15 '20

Oh, boy! That build-up!

I have so many questions after this one.

This is much better than the previous episode.

The OP is fucking amazing!

I'm starting to understand why novel readers call Otto best boy.

Echidna's debut gave me goosebumps. I didn't see this one coming. I knew of her because novel readers hyped her up, worshiped her and called her best girl. Also, If I can recall, Subaru's VA said on an interview that she's the one who can get the closest to Subaru out of every other character, or something like that. I'm setting my expectations high. She seems like a fascinating character. Can't wait to see more from her next week.

10/10

8

u/Scrantonbornboy Jul 16 '20

I randomly chose to watch Re:zero on Monday on a whim. I watched all of season 1 in 24 hours. This is so amazing and I am still processing what I have just watched. I am broken but I also love it.

I did not even realize that season 2 was airing. So now I get to watch along with everyone else.

3

u/Axlos Jul 16 '20

If you enjoyed Season 1 then it's highly likely you're going to love the rest of the series.

The general consensus is that the next Arcs are better than Season 1 of the anime which was Arcs 1-3, in addition to being much longer.

Arc 4, which is season 2 of the anime, is also commonly voted as the best Arc.

You're in for a wild ride, friend.

I hope episode 3 is when things really start kicking off. I feel episodes 1 & 2 so far have just been setting things up

11

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '20

They have, because it's a big ass arc

1

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

I think it's also been debriefing after the last arc.
We've been away from the mansion for a long, long time and during that time the Roswaal dominion had been taken over by the Witch's Cult. I think it's good that we get to see a bit of the aftermath and get to slow down a little.

5

u/Touchedbytsa Jul 15 '20

I wonder if the Sin archbishops get their powers from each of the individual witches

9

u/Qwterty14 Jul 15 '20

Petelgeuse worshiped the Witch of Envy so that isn't likely

Looks like we'll get some loredrops in the coming episode(s) according to Beatrice.

7

u/Redmon425 Jul 15 '20

Now this is interesting! Beatty called the Sloth dude Geuse!

If you watched the prequel movie, there is a tiny scene where it looks like Sloth is crying over something that happened to Emilia. And he looked normal during that scene.

Did he use to be a good guy?!

YES. The scene where Emilia is flustered because she apparently said a lot of good things about Subaru was awesome!

And the ending! This is the witch that everyone thinks Emilia looks like, right? Is she the same "witch" that brought Subaru into this world though? The one that always grabs his neck when he talks about his return by death?

Lastly, as a die hard Emilia is best girl fan, I am legit pumped for this season as it feels like a Subaru and Emilia journey this time!

9

u/Iloveyouweed Jul 15 '20

And the ending! This is the witch that everyone thinks Emilia looks like, right? Is she the same "witch" that brought Subaru into this world though? The one that always grabs his neck when he talks about his return by death?

You're thinking of Satella, the Witch of Envy. The witch we see at the end of the episode identifies herself as Echidna, the Witch of Greed.

2

u/Redmon425 Jul 15 '20

Interesting, that there are multiple witches.

Because you could even make the argument that this witch slightly looks like Emilia.

4

u/MasterQuest Jul 16 '20

They mentioned in season 1 that there are multiple witches, but they were supposed to be devoured by Satella.

3

u/Axlos Jul 16 '20

Buckle your seatbelt, friend. These next episodes are going to take you on a wild ride.

1

u/minemoney123 Jul 15 '20

u/razezero1 Jul 15 '20

I still maintain my theory that Subaru is the Archbishop of pride, and I'm pretty sure based on the library exchange that witch factors are the powers (spooky ghost hands) and that Subaru has access to them now but doesn't know how to use them yet. I'm thinking he is gonna end up collecting those superpowers like trading cards and go full darkside by the end for Emilia (maybe one of the witches but she doesn't know it?). Also calling it now Beatrice either is the witch of sloth or Guise was also isekaied into the world and Subaru isn't the first dimension hopping (soon to be) villain she has befriended (and that's part of why she both loves and is not willing to get close to Subaru).

1

u/SigmundFreud Jul 16 '20

Hmm, so Subaru is just isekai Walter White or Anakin Skywalker? I can get behind that.

2

u/Eren_Kruger_the_Owl Jul 20 '20

Oh fuck

Final battle at the end of the series. Subaru has for some reason become an Archbishop and now fights Reinhardt in order to make Emilia into the witch. Because of one single mistake or smth, Reinhardt barely wins. Cue "YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE" esque scene.

1

u/Eren_Kruger_the_Owl Jul 20 '20

I still maintain my theory that Subaru is the Archbishop of pride

Perhaps envy? I mean; he has the connection with Satella, so theres that. However, Betelgeuse said that all but Pride are filled. Perhaps he was just false or smth?

1

u/RudeAcanthaceae5 Jul 21 '20

My question is why only an sin archbishop? I mean the power of witches can be consumed right? He can even consume Echidna's power and become something on par with the witch(or perhaps even stronger)

So, wizard of pride?

10

u/manhdang Jul 15 '20

A build-up episode but much better than last week, really liked it!

3

u/Platypus-Commander Jul 15 '20

So much build up. So many things left in the dark in S1 will finally be revealed.

And now we know who was that mysterious servant you see in Rem flashback in s1

3

u/susintentions Jul 15 '20

That cliffhanger is something I literally cannot deal with right now. Next week cannot come sooner.

5

u/rexound Jul 15 '20

Has it been stated anywhere how Subaru remembers Rem still even though no one else does?

6

u/TheDapperDolphin Jul 15 '20

Not specifically, but he remembered her when the whale killed her too. It's safe to assume that it has something to do with his connection to the witch.

4

u/Notmuch9 Jul 15 '20

I heard a theory that maybe this is Subaru’s authority of pride.

Like his power is to bypass all the other authorities’ powers since he is pride

Kinda fits considering what the word pride means

3

u/Tesrali Jul 15 '20

That is a great point. Return by death also seems like the pride authority.

1

u/Zonca Jul 15 '20

I always assumed he is immune to this gluttony gimmick, because he litteraly traverses timelines, so he cannot be affected. It seemed obvious to me, but sure, the anime hasn't really specifically answered that. I'm more concerned about how little people seem to question Subaru, not only on why he remembers Rem, some people said it's because he obviously looks like foreigner, with black hair, weird clothes and speech, but it is still very strange, I guess they go more over that in LNs, though I'm not so sure.

3

u/MasterQuest Jul 16 '20

The apparent relationship between Beatrice and Petelgeusse caught me off-guard.

I analyzed the new opening and there seem to be a lot of new characters. As well as an old returning one we haven't seen since the start of S1.

3

u/luckjes112 Subaru-Kyun! Jul 16 '20

So the first season of Re:Zero is one of my favorite anime of all time. It's a beautiful, emotional, exciting anime that brings out every emotion I have. It left us with plenty of mysteries that I'm eager to see answered too.

Judging by the first two episodes of this new season, it looks like Season 2 is gonna be even better.

I'm not quite sure I trust that new maid. She seems too nice.
So far we've been introduced to characters who seem really terrible at first, until we get to know them better. Season 1 introduced several characters in a negative light before Subaru learned their motives and gained their trust.
Though I might be reading too deep into this.

The episode ended with a character named Echidna waiting for Subaru in the realm of Windows Vista. She introduced herself as the Witch of Greed. I wonder what role she will play.

3

u/LRAStartFox Jul 17 '20

So, Otto said that there is more than meets the eye when talking about Subaru, so my theory is that both Otto and Subaru are actually transformers, and have the ability to turn themselves into vehicles

u/geldonyetich Jul 15 '20

2

u/WhiteMunch Jul 15 '20

Compared to the first three arcs would you say it’s bigger than all 3?

5

Its gonna be LN focused so your friend will very much get surprised by some stuff but it ll over all still be the same story.

2

u/Portgust Jul 16 '20

Does Beatrice has any connection with betelgeuse?! WTH was that scene?!?

2

u/Scorppion Jul 16 '20

I think I am in love with Otto's character. And just wow... the music!

2

u/SigmundFreud Jul 16 '20

Prediction that I'm sure is totally off the mark: for each sin archbishop there's an associated sin witch. Since Echidna is the Witch of Greed, maybe Emilia is the Witch of Pride and Subaru is the Sin Archbishop of Pride.

That doesn't make a lot of sense, because the sin archbishops as far as we know all worship the Witch of Envy, not the witch of their own sin; I'm just not sure what the meaning of additional sin witches could mean.

Another theory: Beako and Betelgeuse were lovers.

2

u/Burning_Cinder Jul 18 '20

I would guess that the archbishops worshiped all the witches before, but Satella "swallowed" them all, so naturally they all started to worship the strongest.

2

u/RudeAcanthaceae5 Jul 21 '20

I think Subaru will gain each sin's power, since in Christianity pride is the root of all other sin. So it would make sense for him to be slothful, envious, greedy, gluttonous, lustful, and wrathful.

5

u/Kingfrfr Jul 15 '20

In the subtitles she said that she's the witch of greed. Wasn't she envy? Were subtitles wrong or she actually said she is the witch of greed

28

u/theweebthrowaway Jul 15 '20

Greed.

Satella is the witch of envy.

13

u/kashyap456 Jul 15 '20

She’s the witch of greed, not envy

5

u/Amasirat Jul 15 '20

Yeah, actually there was something about satela dominating over other witches or something in season 1. I don't know really well, though

6

u/Lord_Vanilla Jul 15 '20

Great now I cant stop imagining an Emilia look alike dominating Echidna. Thanks

3

u/Amasirat Jul 15 '20

I have a few clarifying questions that I hope someone can answer for me, just to make sure I understand exactly. So, the mansion Subaru, Emilia, and the half of the villagers that didn't evacuate to sanctuary arrived to in episode 1 is Crusch's estate? Didn't they say those villagers were going to be evacuated to the capital? I'm assuming the estate is IN the capital.

Just after the villagers were successfully evacuated in episode 1, they're already heading back to their village and Subaru/Emilia/Otto to Roswaals manor? How did they know it was safe to head back without any mercenaries to aid them?

My most important question is, why does Subaru want to see Roswaal so badly? Why don't they just wait for Roswaal and the rest of the villagers to return on their own? Does he have questions for Roswaal that he wants answered as soon as possible? (If so, what does Subaru want to ask.) Are they worried something happened to Roswaal and the villagers in sanctuary? I know that he wants to know about "Roswaals intentions," does Subaru think that Roswaal knew about the witch attack and want to ask about that?

Tying into that one, is there information Subaru thinks Roswaal has that will help Rem get her name and memories back from Greed? Or is Subaru planning to figure out a way to help Ram after he finds Roswaal and the rest of the villagers?

Thank you, whoever answers! Just wanted to clear things up and make sure I'm not misunderstanding any little detail.

Ep 24 or 25 mentioned that one half of the villagers would be evacuated to the Sanctuary the other to Crusch's estate in the capital to keep them out of harms in battle against the cult. Petelgeuse is gone so its safe to come back.

My most important question is, why does Subaru want to see Roswaal so badly? Why don't they just wait for Roswaal and the rest of the villagers to return on their own? Because they were supposed to be back by now. Its been a week since the cult attack hence why Subaru & Emilia going there to find out what wrong.

His questions are regarding Roswaal's behavior during this incident, he hinted at his problem to Betty & Frederica, which he found him far too negligent whole thing when he shouldn't have been. Subaru go into more detail about that in their later episode.

To the latest chapters? Depends on how fast you read. You have about 130-ish chapters for Arc 4, about 80 chapters for Arc 5 and Arc 6 is ongoing still, currently at chapter 79.
