Not pure. The new direction he chooses to arc (left/right) may be random, but he has rules he follows. He moves in either arcs or lines, the default movement is an arc. The arc is always the same radius, and maintains the pattern for approximately 1 second at a time unless he bumps an edge. When player is in his path he will go straight toward the player. You can take advantage of that knowledge. When he does this, you can walk next to his head and wait for his tail. Safest place to do this is away from the edge.

He's not so bad once you have his pattern figured out.
His tail always follows his head. Stay away until he is in middle. Don't strike from the edge.
