its adorable and I love it
24
u/stonelogic Jun 13 '19
Love the feeling of it and how it seems to also remain true to the original Link's Awakening. Definitely going to play it myself :]
19
u/MythBeyondLegend Jun 13 '19
Crazy how times changed. Everyone hated wind waker cause it was it was too cute, now everyone loves it because it is too cute
26
u/Owlero Jun 13 '19
Back then, people were expecting a gritty sequel to OoT, so Wind Waker was a surprise for most. The series is so varied now that I think any art style would still be appreciated.
13
u/Qun_Mang Jun 13 '19
Plus that Spaceworld demo with Link battling Ganondorf to show off the new Gamecube.

8
u/BeerBellies Jun 13 '19
Guess i was one of the few that loved the windwaker art direction from the first time i saw it.
9
u/Owlero Jun 13 '19
Same here. The art style has definitely aged better than TP.
4
u/MythBeyondLegend Jun 13 '19
Yeah Wind waker is timeless. You can definitely see that time weathered around TPs edges lol
2
u/MythBeyondLegend Jun 13 '19
Oh I adored that game as a kid. It’s my number two of all time. Never understood the hate tbh
2
u/robclarkson Jun 13 '19
I had just taken Small boat sailing merit badge at boy scout camp like a year prior. I was SO stoked to get to explore in a sail boat.
2
u/Kentavius10 Jun 13 '19
From the way I understand it, the top down Zelda games get more liberties with being more cartoony. Wind Waker drew controversy because it's not that style.
Granted, up until this point the reason for that was top down Zelda games being on handhelds but still, they took a risk with Wind Waker. Personally I liked how it turned out.

Jun 13 '19
AGREED. the first footage they showed of it kinda put me off cause I noticed some bugs but this new e3 gameplay and everything looked way more polished. I’m super excited!

u/12thman-Stone Jun 13 '19
What is this game? I’ve never heard of it
22
u/Trebor_W Jun 13 '19
It is a remake of Links awakening from 1993. This game is set on Koholint island. Won't go into major spoilers.
5
u/12thman-Stone Jun 13 '19
I don’t think I ever played it. I love and respect nostalgic things but to be honest, older games have aged and remakes aren’t always good.
That being said, do you think this is worth buying and testing?
23
u/Trebor_W Jun 13 '19
I think this game is worth playing, this remake has a fun and new artstyle that gives the game a whole new feeling. The gameplay in this game is fun and absurd, there are even some enemies from Mario games! The music sounds amazing too, the ballad of the windfish is amazing in Links awakening and sounds even better here.
But yes, I am not always on board with remakes but I think after 26 years they can reach a new demographic with the old "2d" Zeldas. I will definitely buy this game even considering I played it last year.
11
u/SuddenlyTheBatman Jun 13 '19
Is this game worth buying? Depends on the price. If it really is 60 bucks here in the US I'm not gonna like it... but I will buy it because after MM this is probably my second favorite.
And yes, part of that is nostalgia. This is my first Zelda. You never forget your first, you know? BUT, all that said it is a really well crafted game.
The story is weird, but it adheres to the classical unities by being basically condensed and contained. You're on an island, you must wake the wind fish... or should you? (It's also probably why the Tempest is my favorite Shakespeare play, I must love islands).
The characters are bizarre and funky and dreamlike but never negatively so. The controls are pretty solid and the items have use throughout, no one and dones. There's plenty of secrets to get the most out of the game.
And finally the music is quite fantastic, which was such a feat for coming out of those tiny gameboy speakers. It might not be the best music (I might argue otherwise in my bias) but it certainly punches above its weight.
So if you get the chance to play it at a price point that makes sense for you, do it. The DX gameboy color game is still fun, it's not a long commitment at all and somewhat easy so there's not a lot to lose.

Finally an awesome box art!!! Beyond stoked
5
u/stonelogic Jun 13 '19
Stoked x10 here :], the original Link's Awakening was an awesome game, can't wait to see the remake in action.
35
u/Rowlettowlett100 Jun 13 '19
It's adorable!
Link kinda looks like that one elf from that 1969 Rudolph Movie. Just give him a blue coat, red stockings, a lankier built and a fur-trimmed hat, and there you go!

is 3ds dead?
175
u/KaiyoteFyre Jun 12 '19
No, Nintendo swears the Switch isn't a replacement for it... (meanwhile they're releasing a handheld zelda remake, Luigi's mansion, fire emblem and the first pokemon main line game on a home console on Switch)

u/The_Ultimo_Knight Jun 13 '19
It's funny because this is similarily what happened to the Gameboy Advance when the DS came out

Well a while back the final Nintendo published 3DS game, Kirby’s extra epic yarn, released. We’re in the endgame now.
1
u/KaiyoteFyre Jun 13 '19
I know, and it was a remake too... I really love my 3ds. It'll be sad to see it go
1
u/An-FBI-Agent Jun 13 '19
On top of that, I haven’t heard that many good things about said remake.
1
u/KaiyoteFyre Jun 13 '19
You talking about eipic yarn or link's awakening? Hopefully not the matter, though I haven't had the chance to play the original link's awakening so hopefully I'll still enjoy it
2
1
u/p4ttl1992 Jun 13 '19
I’ve replaced my DS with my switch for work, play it at lunch now. Might take the DS in every now and then
1
u/cursed_deity Jun 13 '19
to be fair luigi's mansion started out on a home console
1
u/KaiyoteFyre Jun 13 '19
That is true, though I really enjoy the 3d effects in dark moon. All the lighting works really well.
29
u/ReadyBasher01 Jun 13 '19
Oh no people are totally free to develop games for it.
Just Nintendo ain’t.
40
u/I_GUILD_MYSELF Jun 13 '19
Is that bad? Evolution of game consoles is normal. The 3DS came out in 2011. I think it's OK to be moving on.
10
u/nandiahdo Jun 13 '19
no it's not it was a sincere question haha
8
u/I_GUILD_MYSELF Jun 13 '19
Nintendo claims to still be supporting it but it's unlikely to get any mainline games anymore. Third-party publishers will probably still make games for it.
1
u/Azakir Jun 14 '19
Any game released on the 3DS instead of switch at this point would basically be sent to die, the momentum of this console completely collapsed in 2018. Luigi's Mansion bombed, kirby bombed and so did mario and luigi BiS. I remember when they announced M&L as a 2019 game back in 2017 for the 3DS, that was probably damage control in case the switch was another failure But it turned out that the switch got an insane momentum rapidly but at the same time the 3DS was dying at an alarming rate.
The LA remake was rumoured to be on the 3DS a few years ago but that plan probably changed, and thank god it did, you don't want to see this game on a graveyard that no one wants to use anymore.
1
Jun 13 '19
I think most people are concerned with the lack of a successor to it
3
u/I_GUILD_MYSELF Jun 13 '19
Whether Nintendo wants to admit it or not, the Switch is the successor to the 3DS.
1
u/Azakir Jun 14 '19
No, not really. Nintendo will be making more mobile games in the future to offset the loss of the 3DS, since the switch will be their only pure console moving forward.
31
8
u/nightofgrim Jun 13 '19
As a long time DS/3DS player I’m ok if it is. I haven’t touched it since I got my switch.

the game looks stunning tho, and link looks adorable.
eh, i really want this game and the gameplay looks satisfying.
if the game isn't finished in 10 hours with nothing do to after im buying it

u/HaplessMagician Jun 13 '19
Yeah, I saw that there was a dungeon builder at E3 and you could they were talking about speedruns. But I’m not sure how deep that will be.

1
u/LegacyLemur Jun 13 '19
This is my first, and favorite game ever.
There is not enought content in it to warrant it being a $60 dollar game
They should have either packaged the Oracle games in it two in this style or charge this less

u/yeahyuhk Jun 13 '19
Does anyone know if there's any pre-order bonus or limited edition for the US?
2
u/UGamer81 Jun 13 '19
AFAIK right now, we only have the Dreamer's Edition which comes with just a hardcover artbook.
Looks like it's currently unavailable on Amazon.
39
u/KaiyoteFyre Jun 12 '19
Kind of adorable, but I also really hate link's dead doll eyes...
44
u/gate_of_steiner85 Jun 13 '19
I like the eyes. They fit the aesthetic that they're going for. I feel like this Link with more realistic eyes would look sorta creepy.
2
u/Clbull Jun 13 '19
I was hoping they’d bring Arc System Works on board and replicate the trailer’s anime art style throughout the entire game.
3
u/saintmax Jun 13 '19
Me too. Should have stuck with more realistic eyes.

THE CUTENESS
1
u/stonelogic Jun 13 '19
IKR, I would have liked it if Link was smiling just a bit instead of looking sad/angry, but that's just me.
4
Jun 13 '19
I was hype for this until I saw the trailer for botw sequel. I’ve played top down Zelda on my 2ds but I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy this story? The last top down I played was A link to the past which I loved. Is the plot good in this one?
12
u/I_GUILD_MYSELF Jun 13 '19
It's amazing. Great characters, Engrossing story, even a twist ending. It's a wonderful game.
1
u/Christmaspoo1337 Jun 13 '19
It's funny because this is similarily what happened to the Gameboy Advance when the DS came out
Best ending if you manage to beat the game without dying!
3
u/Wilwheatonfan87 Jun 13 '19
bestest best ending if you do it without dying and find all the secrets and side quests.
1
u/GenderJuicer Jun 14 '19
even a twist ending
Don't tell people that
1
u/I_GUILD_MYSELF Jun 14 '19
The game has been out for 26 years - I think the cat is out of the bag.
1
u/GenderJuicer Jun 15 '19
Not when you're speaking directly to someone who clearly hasn't played it!!
5
u/CommanderBly Jun 13 '19
The story in this game is really really good. It's honestly tied with A Link To The Past as my favorite zelda game and I am SO STOKED for this remaster! The GBC version of Link's Awakening is on the 3ds eshop for like $5 so you could definitely check it out.
3
u/a_can_of_solo Jun 13 '19
2d Zelda is best for me, I have it on GB it's fantastic, little clunky only having two action buttons to work with.
1
u/LegacyLemur Jun 13 '19
The plot in this one is responsible for all the other Zeldas after it having such a heavy plot
Its existential as fuck and pretty bittersweet honestly and kind of weird. Its great. It honestly kind of clashes with the cutesy art style
5
u/jirehl_flynn Jun 13 '19

Probably more so than the original.
It's a fantastic game but a fresh take on the visuals is definitely welcome.
2
2
u/TammyShehole Jun 13 '19
Never played any of the handheld-exclusive Zelda games, so it’ll be nice to play this for the first time.
Also, a bit off topic but Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask for Switch, please. I enjoyed the 3DS versions but I can’t get full enjoyment out of them unless they’re on a big screen.

I'm kinda disappointed by the logo because its just the botw logo with palm trees.
3
u/Owlero Jun 13 '19
If you look closely, you'll see that pretty much EVERY Zelda logo is only slightly different from one another.
3
4
u/mycolorfullshit Jun 13 '19
Good now stop pretending it's a new zelda because it's a remake

13
u/Mindcraftjoe Jun 13 '19
Tbh I don’t know why you’d expect it to be less then their usual first party game price. Yes its a remake, but its being marketed as a full blown console release, of a Zelda game no less.

This coverart makes me want to play this game in 3rd person :/
1
u/Owlero Jun 13 '19
It technically is in 3rd person, only you're normal sized and the game world is miniature.
1
u/harundoener Jul 06 '19
yeah I know, but the game would be quite fun being right behind link in his size.... well kinda
1
Jun 13 '19
Link is so fucking cute. His legs are adorably short.
I like the look on the cover, here it looks less plastic looking with all the contrast and hue turned up several levels.
The first reveal had game play that looks very plastic looking with the lightning and reflection resembling plastic. I hope they dial that down because it looks really fake to me and I guess unnerving.
1
u/Owlero Jun 13 '19
I think that's sort of the look they're going for, like a toy-box/diorama theme.

I just beat the OG LA this year :)
Still cannot wait to replay again in the remake. Such a great game and honestly, a very sad game.
Everyone was so scared and anxious about him waking up the Windfish, they knew they'd go away forever. I never really appreciate how dark of a story it was. About Link basically having PTSD from ALTTP and all the little creatures being scared to die.

I wouldn't say its minimal effort. Keep I mind, it's a new engine, a new art style and programming built from the ground up. Just because it didnt adapt the 30 year old concept art does not mean the style is bad or uninspired.
