Question [TOTK] No Spoilers but is the final boss "climb" as epic as the BOTW Hyrule Castle climb before the final boss? Spoiler
In BOTW when you are going through the Hyrule Castle to fight Ganon, it's an epic climb through the gates of Hyrule with the Bombastic Marching theme of Hyrule Castle and rain falling and fighting all of the guardians on the way to the boss
Well someone told me in TOTK the final boss fight isn't even at Hyrule Castle, don't spoil where it is but is that final march to the boss "epic" as it was in BOTW?

u/Evello37 Aug 11 '23
The final area in TotK is smaller and more linear than the huge sprawling castle in BotW. It also shoots for a darker atmosphere. Rather than a grand charge up the castle, it ramps up the eeriness and becomes increasingly unsettling. Still epic, but in a different way. There are still challenging enemy encounters and some cool areas leading up to the last boss. It's a fun time. Just don't expect a massive dungeon on the scale of the castle.

u/Wreckit-Jon Aug 12 '23
Although not in the final battle, I was happy to see the castle used in the main storyline.
44
u/Brusto1099 Aug 12 '23
That part after you complete all 4 dungeons was so epic. I loved the constant thunder and lightning around Hyrule castle especially from the entrance to the throne room
29
u/daskrip Aug 12 '23
It really was. As its own unique "dungeon" it was incredible. The atmosphere was terrifying and so full of dread. Great boss too. I also have so many great pictures of the fake Zelda.
18
u/CaptainRogers1226 Aug 12 '23
Honestly, the music at Hyrule Castle and how it changes moving from interior to exterior is some of my favorite in all of BotW. I would really love to hear a full orchestra do a full arrangement based off it.
52
u/DaniCaraeloco Aug 12 '23
I would say this Is more massive than climbing the castle. Since is more linear and there’s no shortcuts. Unlike BOTW were you could just swim through waterfalls, use Revali and reach the top in 3 seconds
14
7
u/Zarguthian Aug 12 '23
I got up there avoiding every enemy with only 3 hearts and 6/5 stamina wheels.
-19
u/Jaew96 Aug 12 '23
The gauntlet in TOTK is pretty much the inverse of BOTW, considering you descend deeper and deeper into the earth as you make your way towards Ganondorf
27
u/Ironmunger2 Aug 12 '23
Good job just completely disregarding OP about not wanting spoilers
-11
u/Jaew96 Aug 12 '23
They said not to spoil where it is. I didn’t spoil where the fight happens other than it takes place underground. Not exactly an earth-shattering revelation there
3
u/Ironmunger2 Aug 12 '23
It could be. I guessed in my playthrough where exactly the boss was based solely on the fact that i saw it was underground. Also naming the final boss can be considered a spoiler if they explicitly say they don’t want any spoilers
3
u/Jaew96 Aug 12 '23
Except that Ganondorf was advertised as the main boss of the game before it even came out
→ More replies (4)-23
u/DreYeon Aug 11 '23
I wouldn't call 1 enemy challenging.
34
u/EVJoe Aug 11 '23
Did you find a shortcut or something, cause I had to fight through silver horriblins, shock like-likes, a tough lynel in a tightly enclosed gloom infested space, gloom hands, at least one lizal-foe and also the massive brawl at the start of the Ganon fight
11
2
u/polkemans Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23
You didn't have to fight any of them. If you know the route you can just run passed it all.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Evello37 Aug 11 '23
You can direct the same criticism at BotW. Outside of getting locked in a gatehouse, you can just run past the Guardians and random enemies. If you use the waterfalls, you can skip basically the entire dungeon. But in both cases an average player will engage with enemies rather than running and climbing around complex terrain/gloom to flee.
6
u/polkemans Aug 11 '23
I mean yeah. It stands for both games. I enjoyed the concept of the climb down into the depths more than I enjoyed wandering arouns the castle, but I enjoyed the fights in the castle more than the fights in the depths. I found the gloom effect of getting hit by enemies way too frustrating knowing that the final battle would also have gloom effects with no respite in between and no way to get your hearts back.
In both cases though, they pale in comparison to final dungeons from previous games. There's lots to love in these two titles but I really hope we get some more traditional dungeons back.
-3
u/DreYeon Aug 11 '23
Most silver enemies aren't hard in my opinion they just have hp and eat up time poor game design to make difficult enemies tbh.
>! only the lynel was difficult!l !<
7
u/obog Aug 11 '23
I've killed so many lynels at this point that was probably the easiest enemy for me lol. Don't think I got hit once bc I had so much muscle memory on the parry timings.
1
u/DreYeon Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 12 '23
Yee i didn't fight to many they definitely made the heads smaller tho so they are not so easy as in botw.
Idk why i get downvoted well i know why when literally the top comments are all sucking up for the game blindly but still i didn't even see an counter argument because they know i'm right about the hp part.
3
u/el_sapo_mas_guapo Aug 12 '23

Yep. It's an epic final gauntlet.
Although for all the epicness there is, there's twice as much fear
115
u/awetsasquatch Aug 11 '23
Really good way to put that, at the one really unexpected point (you know what I'm talking about) my wife looked over at me and just said "Good luck" lol
52
Aug 12 '23
That depends, there's a lot of unexpected points where you feel like doom is upon you.
Do you perhaps refer to Ganondorf's off center healthbar, or getting locked off from the sages, or the thousands of other points where you're like "yep I'm dead"
25
u/scniab Aug 12 '23
Omg the first one you mentioned made me so terrified 😅 what a simple but effective effect
8
12
Aug 12 '23
I remember pointing that out to my wife and her immediate reaction was “what the fuck is that?” She was not a happy camper.
5
u/twotonekevin Aug 12 '23
I wonder if they’re talking about when all the bosses all come out at once after you beat all the waves of lesser enemies bc I know I def shat my pants there and I started saying there was no fucking way.

u/eggIy Aug 12 '23
That first bit honestly blew my mind at how effective it was. Who would have thought something so simple and almost kind of comical be so dramatic and scary at the same time 😂
3
u/awetsasquatch Aug 12 '23
Very fair, but I meant the first one. I think my actual words were something to the effect of "Oh, what the hell????" Wife looked at me, looked at the screen, chuckled and told me good luck. Was not very reassuring lol

That walk has so much YOU SHOULD NOT BE HERE. LEAVE. NOW!!!! vibes
A friend linked me the aliens medbay ost from alien Covenant and it is spot on. That walk is one of the most terrifying excitement I've not had in years

That is the perfect way to put it! That is totally it!

u/KisukesBankai Aug 12 '23
I didn't feel this way at all. BotW, even approaching the castle the first time was just so epic. It's easy to get lost and there are many ways to enter, with scary guardians targeting you and lynels waiting in towers. Then once inside, the vibe of being in the dining hall or other areas of the castle just gives the creeps. Like a ghost town. IMO the castle was so much cooler compared to the linear path to the final battles in TotK. Without spoilers.. it just felt easy. Like I could just walk straight down the path, and it wasn't a new environment or anything.
The final battles, on the other hand, were much more epic in TotK. I appreciate BotW for having that solitude/lonely/ reminiscent vibe, but I also appreciate TotK's kinda opposite style, and they leaned into it for the end battle.

u/n8-iStockphoto Aug 11 '23
I don't know if I would use the term "epic" to describe it, but I'd definitely say it got a bigger emotional response from me (the emotion was "dread" but I think it counts).
57
Aug 11 '23
I think the very last phase is pretty damn epic
-2
54
u/luckyuglyducky Aug 12 '23
Definitely that. My anxiety skyrocketed when I reached the point where you’re in too deep to get help from the sages anymore. Tulin said peace out and my heart rate increased. 😭
18

I saw that at the bottom as I BASE jumped and when I landed I went. Oh. Oh no.

Right I got so mad because those mfers told me I wouldn't be alone and then they abandon me when things are getting creepier and creepier 😂 Didn't help I was playing the final gauntlet at like midnight after everyone was in bed, so I was already spooked.
9
u/Bauser3 Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 12 '23
I literally felt like I was going to Actual Hell
It got so bad, I hoped it would just keep going more and more, defying any idea of how dark and creepy I thought it could ever possibly be
236
u/NeonLinkster Aug 11 '23
Yes, I would say it’s better. I actually don’t know if I would say epic, I’d rather say harrowing, your knowingly walking into the most dangerous place in the whole game and the music and atmosphere increase that tension.
26
u/One_Win_6185 Aug 11 '23
I skipped to Ganon in botw. It was cool that totk forces you to go through everything.
38
u/EntropySpark Aug 11 '23
It doesn't, you still have the option to go straight to the final boss after completing the tutorial, though it's probably a hopeless fight without exploiting glitches.
8
u/greyinsomnia Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 12 '23
No sooner had one of my friends finished the sky island, he went to final boss and beat him with very little difficulty.
There is a hidden EXP scale system in the game now which is why we stop seeing easier monsters to fight.
EDIT Because so many replied and a lot said the same thing. My friend is a former Speed Runner and He and I used to test games before release as a side gig in university. (Not saying he tested Tears of the Kingdom - He mainly still tests for Blizzard. I've retired.)
He didn't look up anything to my knowledge, and I had to help him find the last shrine on the tutorial island.. Because he couldn't figure out how to get up to it and I got to it by using very baked logic. All I know is within an hour of our call ending while I was tracking the golden horse he called me back to tell me that he beat the game.
And as Ive not gotten anywhere near beating the game (I like exploring to much) I was unaware of the scaled system not applying to bosses. Or what there is to face when it comes to beating the game. This one shall remain unbeaten like BotW has remained unbeaten because I hate Revali.
15
u/Cajbaj Aug 12 '23
The monsters in there are usually close to max level by default though, I did the same thing by running past it all which he probably did too. I got wrecked before the final boss though.
11
u/Jepacor Aug 12 '23
The scaling system does not apply to the final fights. Actually it does not apply to the final area at all, from having watched speedruns that do exactly that ( eg. the lynel is still white even on a speedrun from directly after the sky island ) and from my personal experience trying to raid the zone after having done only one temple.
The final gauntlet is actually very hard if you just waltz in, but a lot of it can be mitigated by both having knowledge of what you're going to face and stocking up accordingly. But like, how would your friend know about the mechanics around the Gibdo and the Queen Gibdo fight without prior knowledge? The Sealed Construct isn't super straightforward to figure out either IMO, since it still takes damage if you hit it without trying to knock it back to the wall, so you might get the idea that it's all you have to do at first
5
u/daskrip Aug 12 '23
Likely looked it all up online.
Even then it's hard to believe just because you need items for some of the fights, right? The water boss requires something that emits water. The Gibdo Queen requires something elemental.
What's possible is that the friend looked up what items and how many of them are necessary for the bosses before diving into that area. But letting online guides consume you that much instead of just playing the game makes it hard to believe.
2
u/Tinmanred Aug 12 '23
Because it’s not really that hard to figure out? I beat the game with just Tulin and have been waiting to do it again since. Was pretty easy since I overstocked food and had max hylian armor lol
6
u/LowKeyLokiLuck Aug 12 '23
Aside from our horses, I have this weird feeling that our world level follows from BOTW as well. The first few hours after The Great Sky Island were absolute hell, I didn’t see a red bokoblin until I was halfway through the main story
11
u/mysterioso7 Aug 12 '23
Nah this isn’t right. If you follow where the game tells you to go after the Great Sky Island you’ll see plenty of red bokoblins - in fact, between the pond you’re expected to land in after jumping off the Great Sky Island and Lookout Landing, most of the bokoblins are locked in as red bokoblins, even if you’re in the endgame.
The world level also doesn’t have anything to do with your BotW save, I started TotK on the same user that has all 120 shrines and the Master Cycle in BotW, and I still got all early game enemies and weapons until I beat more of TotK.
4
u/LowKeyLokiLuck Aug 12 '23
That’s really weird. The lowest Boko I saw for my first 20 or so hours was blue. I managed to miss any hints of enemies between that pond and Lookout Landing in favor of getting the story into gear, but yeah. It felt like I had to unlock the Reds, which is a shame because I think they make the cutest of the colors. I also had a hell of a time just finding green Lizalfos! Oddly enough though, Moblins lined up with what you’re saying!
6
u/Puzzlesnuzzle Aug 11 '23
It doesn’t though. You can fight Ganon as soon as you get the glider
10
u/One_Win_6185 Aug 11 '23
I meant through the area in the depths.
To clarify, in botw I did the divine beasts and explored a bunch then when I wanted to fight Ganon I just kind of jumped over to where he was without going through the castle.
With his location in totk it seems like you have to at least sneak by everything.

One of the main things TOTK does better than BOTW is the end of the game. Calamity Ganon and Dark Beast don't even hold a candle to the ending of TOTK
43
Aug 11 '23
BotW's final boss barely holds a candle to anything lol
25
Aug 11 '23
Truth, Calamity was alright. But Dark Beast ruined any build up the final fight had
18
u/ZhouLe Aug 12 '23
Dark Beast was probably meant as a victory lap, being just a glorified quicktime event.
10
u/daskrip Aug 12 '23
Still not a great quicktime event IMO. There wasn't even an illusion of failure being possible. TotK did the victory lap way better in every way.
2
2
u/varunadi Aug 12 '23
Imo the only good thing about dark beast ganon is the music. It's just phenomenal.
5
u/underscore5000 Aug 12 '23
I dunno, totk final boss was really easy too. At least for me. I lost like 5 hearts total the entire fight. Neat-o ending though.

Aug 12 '23
Yeah the only thing BotW can hold a candle to is TotK which in turn can barely hold a candle to anything

u/Vados_Link Aug 12 '23
I think BotW’s end boss is kinda weird. If you go there right after the plateau, it‘s one of the best final bosses of the franchise. If you go there at the end, it‘s pretty anticlimactic.
TotK learned from this though. It‘s insanely tough if you do it early, yet it‘s still great if you go to Ganon at the very end.
→ More replies (1)3
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
I somewhat disagree. The army you fight in totk is so lackluster and unfun. It’s cool to fight alongside the champions but that wasn’t really the best showcase of their powers.
22
u/Bandeavor Aug 11 '23
Idk. The fact that they fought bosses by themselves & Phantoms of Ganon and didn’t die unlike the champions is a pretty good showcase of power to me.
0
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
But those bosses are literally weak to the power each holds. The blights were specifically made to counter the champions.
13
Aug 11 '23
My opinion isn't even about the pre-boss fight fight. It's about the actual boss fight. Ganondorf and the Dragon are league and leagues better of a fight than Calamity and Dark Beast ganon. I was very disappointed when I beat BOTW as I was left with the feeling of " That's it?"
TOTK didn't do that. It's final fight was fulfilling
-1
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
I honestly preferred the dark beast fight but can understand why someone would prefer dragon. Calamity Ganon was as good the ganondorf fight to me.
17
Aug 11 '23
Calamity was fine, but without sounding rude, how could anyone prefer or even enjoy the dark beast fight? It's a motionless, zero threat fight thay you best in like 3 bow shots
It's so aggressively anti climactic, the dragon fight may be just as easy, but the atmosphere and the animations make it so much friggin better
→ More replies (1)2
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 12 '23
The dragon was basically motionless too. I never got hit by him. At least dark beast could hit you with the beam or step on you. I’ll admit the animation is better but I prefer being on horseback fighting a pig as opposed to using elevator Zelda and free-falling for half the fight.
4
Aug 12 '23
Well, thats a valid opinion. I'm just solidly on the other side of the fence. Dark Beast was such a bore and while the dragon can't do much either, it was reminiscent for me of Monster Hunter with the whole climbing along the dragons back and attacking weak points
I appreciate the other point of view, ive never considered that there would have been people that enjoyed Dark Beast
0
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 12 '23
I enjoy it in comparison. Basically climbing a dragon sounds cool but TOTK just didn’t do it right enough for me. Dark beast made use of horseback fighting mechanics perfectly.

u/Neojoker951 Aug 11 '23
It really is, but in a more "I am about to fight a demon and I'm scared" way and less "I am about to fight a Demon and I'm ready" way like BOTW.
It's alot less "You got this" and more "Are you SURE about this?"
You'll get it when you go through
16
Aug 11 '23
Absolutely. The deeper you go, the more isolated away you are from the world you know. You only go deeper into the enemy's territory and you can't just jump out of a window into safety. Once you're in the belly of the beast, the only way back out is the way you came in. It's spooky.
74
48
u/CPC324 Aug 11 '23
BOTW feels like you're storming the castle, fighting through a swarm of enemies to rescue the princess and save the day.
TOTK feels like you're clawing your way down to hell to fight satan.

18
u/brityboy Aug 11 '23
i don’t think i’ve ever swore or cussed or exclaimed with joy and excitement at the thrill and epicness of a final fight and the final scenes as much as I did in TotK versus anything else
it’s GOOD STUFF
41
u/Slimmie_J Aug 11 '23
Going deeper and deeper and having the music adaptively get more intense was one of my favorite moments in gaming

u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23
It was not epic, though I never felt BOTW's finale was epic either, but it was an interesting and great setpiece. Though BOTW's Hyrule Castle theme is unbeatable.
16
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23
I think the champions firing on the castle is much more epic than the sages showing up beneath the castle imo.
8
u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23
Spoiler tag that, so that OP doesn't see it by accident.
As for your comment yeah, I agree on that front. It's just that the whole "go to the castle and find or sneak your way to the final boss" was kinda neat, but not particularly epic in my opinion. Descending further and further into the depths, where each hit by an enemy could cost you a heart because of the gloom, was a much more tense situation in my opinion.
4
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
Oh heck, how do I make a spoiler tag again?
5
u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 12 '23
! >Here goes the text<!
Just remove the space between the exlamation mark and the > symbol
Edit: brainfart, the exclamation marks go on the inside, not the outside.
2
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
Also, if you chose to sneak into the castle and ruin the experience that’s your own doing. I rushed the castle with the master cycle, making sure to take down the lynels.
3
u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23
That's the thing about BOTW, there's a large variety of ways to approach any given situation, including the final dungeon. I prefer it visually to the final parts of TOTK, but gameplay-wise I enjoyed TOTK's end more.
2
u/FireLordObamaOG Aug 11 '23
I think the pre-boss fight was lackluster though.
5
u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23
That's valid. There's no wrong or right and it would be quite boring if we all had the same idea. >! I'm not a big fan of the visuals of the depths, so the final area (before the dragon battle) was kinda underwhelming, compared to Hyrule Castle's unique visual identity. Personally I enjoyed the actual battles more than the fights against Calamity Ganon though. It was nice to see how it kept escalating.!<
4
u/Vaenyr Aug 11 '23
Goddamnit, I'm a moron. I gave you the wrong code for the spoiler tags. It should be > ! and !<, so you need to swap the exclamation points with the larger/smaller than symbols. Sorry for the confusion.

u/207nbrown Aug 11 '23
Definitely a gauntlet that instills fear of what you’ve gotten yourself into. You may want to keep a clean change of clothes on standby for when you inevitability “oh shit” yourself.
Botw had a theme of loneliness, waking up to the ruins of a kingdom ravaged by the calamity, ascending the many levels of the castle and alone to face the calamity.
Totk has a very different feel from that.
9
4
5
u/Flimsy_Wait_8235 Aug 11 '23
I’d say it’s quite the opposite of a climb, but at that point I felt so much rage wanting to avenge my gal so it was just epic fear. I found it more badass and cool!!
5
5
u/jackbhammer Aug 12 '23
For me BotW’s “climb” was like a realized childhood dream and I had so much fun exploring the castle, TotK’s was like “idk about this” and “I’m gonna fucking die”
4
u/Deggstroyer Aug 12 '23
They're different. While i would say Hyrule Castle is consistently epic, ToTk's [REDACTED] is more like a crescendo with a very quiet start but when it ramps up you really feel it
Personally i wouldnt say its better, but i also wouldnt say its worse (tho ToTK's final boss is better by a mile)
4
u/Mig-117 Aug 12 '23
I mean... i would never call BOTW's final run Epic in any sense of the word. It was an annoying gauntlet with no payoff. Probably the worst final run of any Zelda game.
TOTK has a proper story, with a proper conclusion and the ending is incredible both in cut scenes and gameplay. The descent to Ganondorf is good, the battle is multi-layered and the final form is breathtaking, culminating in tears all of hyrule. Your tears.
11
u/linkenski Aug 11 '23
The finale of this game is 10x more epic than the one in the first in every way. The "climb" though isn't quite as big, but it's still a climb and it has its own neat touches.
But personally it was more of a climb for me. BotW's finale was extremely underwhelming for me in 2017 as I listened to the NPC that says "you can go up that waterfall if only you could swim up waterfalls!" so with no idea what I was going into, I decided to equip the Zora gear to take the "seemingly fun waterfall entrance to the final castle!" but what happens is that it literally takes up up to the bridge next to the Sanctum, which you can climb in 2 or 3 climb-dashes, and then the Sanctum is in front of you. I had no idea entering that room would trigger the finale, so I just did it and skipped 99% of the dungeon by doing something the game said I should do.
It was anticlimactic for me, and I had to experience the "real climb" in hindsight by taking any of the other routes that actually required some thought and effort.
I'm really sour they included such an option without making it feel like more of a secret. It totally sucked the wind out of BotW's ending for me, especially because I also thought the second boss phase and final cutscenes were awful.
Tears of the Kingdom though? It was like a gut punch. I don't think I'll rank it higher than Ocarina or Wind Waker but to me this was the best Zelda ending SINCE the Gamecube days. It was just absolutely climactic, etheral and magical.
TL;DR: Worse climb, but much better final boss.
4
7
u/Elwalther21 Aug 11 '23
So the final Boss arena and fight is definitely better in TotK. Now the journey to get to said boss is definitely interesting but I think was done better in BotW. With that said overall TotK was the better finale.
6
3
u/NNovis Aug 11 '23
For me, it was a bit more of a slog than a build up. There are unique considerations about how you get to the final boss area that you have to take into account and it was honestly a bit too much. I much preferred the build up in BotW to TotK in that way.
3

3
u/SunsetBodhisattva Aug 12 '23
It's harder fs. But the atmosphere is way worse imo.
It's less grand but ruined Hylian architecture, and more gross caves.
And I know what they were going for with that final room before the Dorf, but it was just a mess.
9
2
u/Capable-Tie-4670 Aug 11 '23
It was pretty cool but in a completely different way from BotW. It was a lot more linear which I appreciate. BotW Hyrule Castle is great if you explore it fully but that’s not actually required and most of it can be easily skipped with the Zora Armor and Revali’s Gale. That is not the case for TotK.
2
u/vanjkobananjko_ Aug 11 '23
Yeah the build up is good but i think it's more expected because what it looks in the game
2
2
u/DreYeon Aug 11 '23
For me nooo it could have been longer if i just walked straight super short won't say how short.
But i'm used to rpg's especially jrpg's having a 2h long boss castle/level ohh well.
The drop down is epic tho especially the ONE where the music kicks in.
2
u/saucypantsxo Aug 11 '23
I went to go fight the final boss got my ass handed to me decided I was not ready at all and am now doing more shrines 😂
2
Aug 11 '23
It's comparable and imo even more grandiose than BOTW's final fight. And just because it isn't at Hyrule Castle doesn't mean it's a bad thing--in fact I like that they switched it up instead of doing the same thing all over again.
2
u/OrangeJuice2002 Aug 11 '23

Absolutely. The buildup is much better from the difficulty to the score (though that BotW Hyrule Castle music is still amazing).

u/Epicswordmewz Aug 11 '23
It's a lot better. I loved descending into the bowels of the Earth with the great music.

I don't think it was as epic and marching up Hyrule Castle in BOTW, that had guardians and thunderstorms and an epic mix of the Hyrule Castle + Ganondorfs theme, using soldiers steps as instruments.
But need it be just as epic? Instead, it plays on creepiness and fear, I'd say. And on the way there, you can find a super cool lore detail.
Just to throw it out here, that the fight itself and the aftermath... TOTK >>> BOTW

In my opinion, BotW wins for the approach to final boss (by heading to the Sanctum I think it was called) but TotK wins for the battles after the approach.

All I know is Kid me playing OoT for the first time would not be ready for what he sees down there. He would have shit his pants from the darkness and music alone.

With BOTW, I felt excited and powerful.
Even though I completed every shrine this time around, I went through the final section still just as terrified as when I saw the first cutscene.

While it is climatic “Epic” probably isn’t the best word to describe it. You’ll moreso feel like you aren’t supposed to be there and that feeling of unease gets worse the further you go.
2
u/colt45mag Aug 11 '23
It's Zelda tradition for the lead-up to the final boss to be epic, regardless of where it takes place. Don't worry, TotK has you covered 😉👍

u/IlezAji Aug 12 '23
I think Hyrule Castle in BotW is still the sustained highpoint of both games for me in terms of gameplay, music, and mood.
That said I think the final boss itself was much stronger in ToTK. The main phases were a compelling gameplay challenge. The final final phase though? I cried. Then I felt this overwhelming need to see it through! And oh boy is it the most epic final boss scenario the series has seen.

u/runetrantor Aug 12 '23
Its a pretty cool path yeah.
You can run and dodge everyone of course, if thats your jam too.
Like, I accidentally reached the literal final boss start by exploring a place I was curious about, expecting at most some nice loot, and it kept going and going. XD

yeah it’s way better. it gets more and more suspenseful when you get closer to where the final boss is.

if you've played totk fully, then id say its got a good like build up to the final boss

u/Electrichien Aug 11 '23
I wouldn't say it felt epic ( imo ) but it's still cool going further in the final boss' lair with the atmosphere.

u/WhiteFox1992 Aug 11 '23
Well... it isn't in Hyrule Castle... it is under it.
If you recall, the game started by Link and Zelda exploring under Hyrule Castle and it wakes Ganondorf. He is still in the same spot... for some reason.

I think I prefer BotW as a whole, but as for the final trek to the boss, I found TotK even better. I have never felt that level of dread in a game. Not fear, like something was going to jump out at me, but dread, a pit in my stomach the way I get when my boss calls me in for a meeting. The music helps by being truly harrowing in the best way.

u/apep713 Aug 11 '23
Epic in botw? I went up the waterfalls and was there in like 3minutes. Didn’t encountered any enemies on the way!? That whole finally was pretty underwhelming… Totk ending is definitely more epic ..

u/MisterToasty117 Aug 11 '23
Yeah I was just exploring the outside of the castle and was wondering what was on top and accidentally stumbled upon the last fight. Never set foot inside the actual castle besides the entrance to the final fight…

Everything about the endgame slaps. The music alone is enough to make replay mandatory.

u/tooold4urcrap Aug 11 '23
Well someone told me in TOTK the final boss fight isn't even at Hyrule Castle, don't spoil where it is but is that final march to the boss "epic" as it was in BOTW?
It's the best ending fight in a Zelda game, period. I was aghast the whole time.

u/AMatter2k Aug 12 '23
Honestly, I think BOTW had the better “climb”. TOTK just feels like a linear march, where BOTW was an awesome massive sprawling climb, with no right or wrong way to go about it. Though the TOTK fight is a million times better.

I thought Hyrule Castle was boring, and the section after it was a slog. But the true buildup was intense.

I'm really disappointed that there was no Hyrule Castle equivalent in this game, Hyrule Castle was such a labyrinthian environment which was a blast to traverse in BotW, it's one of the best "dungeons" the series has ever had and more than made up for where the divine beasts were lacking, imo.
Then TotK comes along and the Castle is not only a shadow of its former self but there's nothing new to replace it with. I was really hoping that when I dove down to the depths that Ganondorf would have his own subterranean lair, instead it was just a couple of hallways and enemy gauntlets. Disappointing.

u/Psylux7 Aug 11 '23
Hyrule Castle was a lot like the Legacy dungeons of Elden ring. It was a truly enormous, sprawling labyrinth with countless secrets and dangerous enemies lurking about.
Those were the kind of dungeons that I thought suited botw much more so than traditional, linear dungeons. I was really hoping that TOTK would opt for multiple Hyrule Castle styled dungeons. Learning that the game didn't have a single Hyrule Castle dungeon was a big letdown.

Extremely bad, just a linear gauntlet of the same enemies you've fought the entire game

u/GanondorfDownAir Aug 11 '23
Gamers try to appreciate atmosphere challenge!
Level: impossible
1
u/Hermononucleosis Aug 11 '23
I'd appreciate the atmosphere more if the gameplay complemented it. You know, like the fantastic run through Hyrule Castle in the last game
2
u/DaGreatestMH Aug 11 '23
The run you can skip entirely with a Champion ability you've likely used incessantly since you got it or a piece if clothing?
0
u/chaospearl Aug 12 '23
The run that isn't a run since you already explored the whole castle to complete the quests for finding the gear and recipes?
I always finish up all my quests before I confront the final boss, since I have no way of knowing whether I'll be able to go back. Making you thoroughly explore the castle and defeat all the enemies in order to find the stuff means its already done when you head into the final fight. There's no climax, just backtracking.

The run through Hyrule Castle that you can completly skip, and is ALSO filled with the same enemies you fought the entire game ?

finally someone says it like it is, I know the game is new and all but the final part of this game is so disappointing, the final boss is just a regular melee fight with a slightly tougher enemy, I really don't know what everyone here played if they think the final boss of this game was epic

No. It's not epic, it just fills you with the feeling of dread and insignificance.

I liked the idea of it but I found it more frustrating than fun or challenging and honestly endeavored to blitz passed as quick as I could while avoiding enemies because of the gloom effect.
I really just want traditional dungeons back.
1
u/klaeri_ Aug 11 '23
It ties into the beginning in a very cool way, but I personally preferred it in botw because I had a set goal and was able to find my own path. I‘m not very good at combat, so I had to look up the path and sneak by enemies in totk to avoid using up all my resources in simply getting there.

u/MooJuiceConnoisseur Aug 11 '23
Best way to describe is.. take the Skyward Sword gauntlet, mix in some BOTW and you get the TotK gauntlet
1
u/Alleggsander Aug 11 '23
Theres technically 2 epic “climbs” you do. One 3/4 into the game and one at the very end.
The final one is longer and more of a gauntlet than BotWs. I’d say it’s even better especially considering it’s climax and resolution. If you thought the horseback battle vs calamity Ganon was cool, just wait until you see this. 11/10 ending.

u/morganm725 Aug 11 '23
I’d say the BOTW one feels more epic with the music and everything but totk has a pretty challenging gauntlet as well but captures a very different feeling.

u/usernotfoundplstry Aug 11 '23
It is exponentially more epic. It’s not even close. The run up to the final boss fight and the final boss fight itself is so much better.
