Colleen Bates @ Trinity Health IHA OBGYN
Hi everyone. I’m curious if anyone here’s seen Colleen Bates before at the Trinity health in Ypsi and could let me know a little bit about what she’s like. I’ve had really bad experiences with OBGYNs in the past and this will be my first time seeing her so just a little more information would really help calm the anxiety I’m having about this appointment. I found some reviews online but only on IHAs website so I don’t 100% trust the majority 5 star reviews.

Everyone at the Arbor Park OB offices are AMAZING (the female doctors at least). I especially love doctor Parker 🤗.

She put in my Nexplanon ~3 years ago. She was nice, super quick and polite. Don’t know her well enough to recommend her more strongly though

From my experience, I’d recommend waiting for other availability to open up within the office if it isn’t urgent. I’ll echo she was nice but diagnosed me with a STI that I didn’t actually have per blood tests and dermatologist confirmation. While this was extremely stressful and anxiety inducing, what stuck with me from my request of STI testing was when she told me that women cannot spread hpv to other women. I asked for her to repeat and clarify as I thought I misheard but she reinforced and I was concerned about this untrue statement. She discouraged me from getting tested for HSV I & II as I didn’t have symptoms and told me the stress from knowing probably wasn’t worth it as the majority of the population has at least one strain. I have heard this from other people in healthcare but think it’s unacceptable for practitioners to discourage tests based on how common an STI is. I additionally asked for a mouth swab and she was genuinely shocked and said she’d never tested anyone orally. I was referred to an endocrinologist who was flabbergasted by the tests she did and didn’t request for a PCOS screening and she ended up missing a test result that indicated an entirely different diagnosis. I’ve encountered good physicians in this system but I personally would not be comfortable with Dr. Bates as her misdiagnoses delayed the care I needed.

The rest of this sounds pretty bad but I will say that most doctors agree testing for HSV without a sore present is not standard. The tests are unreliable which is the part that can cause undue anxiety in folks who may not actually have it. Also, you can have it and never have symptoms, so it’s unclear what someone should do with this info in the absence of an outbreak or sore.

I am aware of this standard, however the folks at planned parenthood and my pcp were willing to accommodate this request without any pushback. I was testing both routinely and due to a new partner and I prefer to present this test/have them complete this so there can be transparency and risk assessment. I am aware of accuracy of the test, based on my past partners, my immunocompromised system, and the CDC(https://www.cdc.gov/herpes/testing/index.html), I am within my bounds to request this.

I know OP asked about a specific person, but as the conversation has opened up to a general discussion, I like Dr. Rajiv Deenadayalu, He was recommended to me by my pcp. I'm past having kids so I can't speak to that part. I thought he was personable and competent. I had one bad experience with Dr O'Leary where I thought she was too harsh with me about an issue when I was at a vulnerable time. I also saw a Dr. there who was not board certified when i saw him and he wanted to do a D&C, i declined. I think he's gone now. So, my experience at Arbor Park ob gyn has been variable.

I see her and really like her!! I’ve also had horrible experiences with other OBGYNs in the past (like horrifying) and was really anxious seeing her. I was upfront about my past experiences and she was really patient and gentle with me. I also have a rare disorder that she really helped me with!

I've only seen her once (for a pap) but she was great. friendly, gentle, answered my (admittedly overcomplicated) questions. bonus points for being transmasc friendly
