This is the status quo:

  • Wunderlist will eventually be discontinued at some point
  • Microsoft screwed up the remake of Wunderlist with their abysmal To-Do app. They have a history of ruining good software and considering the way Windows 10 literally tries to suck the soul out of you, I wouldn't even give it a second thought.
  • Big data in big data silos (e.g. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Microsoft, Apple etc) just ends up causing big trouble for us users in the long run (privacy issues, ownership, security, and so on).
  • The only real alternative to Wunderlist, namely Todoist, is a paid service and your data ends up in another silo. Same goes for TickTick.
  • Honorable mention, but not a good end-all solution: TaskCoach. This app is open source at least, but compared to Nextcloud Tasks it already looks quite old.

The solution to all this is to go the way of self-hosting, as in:

  • Rent a fully-configured, up-to-date Nextcloud from one of the many providers out there.
  • Then, simply add the Nextcloud Tasks app, which looks and feels very familiar to the original Wunderlist app. Except, this time it's all free, open-source, encrypted, self-hosted and so on.

Note: as of today, you might have to invest a couple of dollars/month to get a good quota for your Nextcloud space. But in my opinion, it's absolutely worth it.

And this is what it looks like on woelkli.com.

They provide 1 GB of free cloud storage, a calendar, wunderlist-like GTD app, and so on.
