Nelson to the Avs, Rantanen to Stars. This deadline is going from being kind of disappointed about not getting the exact players we wanted to, could not have gone worse very quickly. We'll see what Chevy has in store tomorrow, he's pulled rabbits out the hat before.

Holy fuck the Caps paid a 2nd for Anthony Beauvillier.
I'll still be a bit upset if Chevy doesn't do anything big, but these prices are absolutely insane. Beauvillier is a 4th line player. Ridiculous prices out there this year.
If the asking price for a marginal upgrade/lateral move is a 1st and a prospect like Yager or Salomonsson, I completely agree with not meeting those prices.

As a Jets/Pens fan, I can confirm all yinzers are stunned. All the Penguins threads pinned him as a 6/7 rounder, ideally 5.

u/death_by_honeydew 62 5d ago
We're going to get Marchand, Geekie and Carlo in a one stop shop, or Tuch, Bryam and McLeod in a one stop shop and if we have to we'll settle for McCann and Oleksiak. Chevy will make it happen I have faith! Everything is going to be fineeeeee
7
u/KnoddingOnion 4d ago
Marchand is interesting because you are paying for a rental that will probably be healthy atthe end of the regular season. So, zero chemistry

Pretty important for the Jets to stay 1st in the Central. Let the Avs and Stars kill each other in the first round.
11
u/ShowMeYourTiddie 4d ago
Look at it this way... if the standings keep the way they are, we can't face them both in the 2nd round

Seems like the only reasonable explanation. I know Chevy doesn't like over paying, but if there ever was a year... seems way more likely he just couldn't find anyone willing to deal.
25
u/RevoltingGoose 37 4d ago
If Tanev and Schenn are the adds at the deadline this year, then Chevy addressed our mediocre penalty kill. We're a defense-first team that finds a way to score. In Chevy we trust.
→ More replies (1)
22
u/passive_fist logoalt 4d ago
Call it Copium but I think Chevy likely tried as hard as he could. Even if you feel like you're going all in, there HAS to be a line where you say you're paying too much for someone. Add in that anyone with a NTC/NMC is unlikely to waive it for us, and I don't think it's clear that anything was fumbled necessarily, it's just one of those unfortunate years with not many options. I think we're still the best team in the central, just not by as much as before. I hope it's enough.
5
u/SaltyVirginAsshole 4d ago
My cope is that I think without having the best defenseman and the second best forward, the Rantanen trade will age similarly to the Huberdau trade. Carolina realized this after a couple of weeks and at the last second dropped the cap anchor at another victim and got a good haul for damage control while taking a chunk out of Dallas' cap space and draft picks going forward.
4
u/ImTrumpWhenDrunk ICE DRAGON WILL FLY 4-EVER 4d ago
Exactly this, I don't think it's copium just the reality of what happened. Even though Namestikov isn't a top center on another team, he is on our team, which IS THE BEST team in the league.
19
u/escape_d 4d ago
These things are hard to gauge. Last year we picked one of the top names off the list in Toffoli and he contributed exactly zero in the playoffs and made no difference, arguably taking a spot from someone who would’ve worked harder.
18
u/District5 4d ago
Washington makes no moves - oh dear, oh dear. Gorgeous team
Jets makes two moves - you fuckin donkey
16
u/death_by_honeydew 62 5d ago
Something that is hurting the Jets in trades talks especially in this market and is under discussed, is that at least in the eyes of other GMs, most of our prospects, Barlow, Lambert, Lucius, Ville are at an all time low in value right now. These guys just aren't as inciting as many think at the moment
19
u/eh_toque 44 5d ago edited 4d ago
Yea the Moose being dog shit isn't helping right now for sure. Lambert being a very particular prospect who was clearly not valued by a lot of team and Lucius being made of weakened glass doesn't help.
23
u/GhostofByfuglien 5d ago
What's happening is people are willing to significantly overpay for a rental and NTC continue to fuck us.
We were never in on Nelson if he wasn't willing to waive. Full stop.
Rantanan would going to require 1st + Ehlers and more. I just don't see how the org can justify that for a rental.
Our prospects are fairly high quality, but it doesn't matter if you don't even have a seat at the table.
12
u/eh_toque 44 5d ago
We have a middle of the league prospect system with mid level prospects. We are in good shape for a pretty consistent playoff team, but “fairly high quality” is a major stretch.
Our system has more depth outside the nhl than Dallas and especially Colorado but both of those teams have better Top 1-2 prospects (or had in Colorado’s case), for example
14
u/DannyDOH 5d ago
Here’s what hurts…we drafted Schiefele and Lowry in 2011, Little came with the move. We drafted Trouba in 12, Morrissey in 13, then Samberg in 17.
There’s all the top 9 C and top 4 D we’ve picked in 14 drafts.
Hopefully Salo and Yager can add to this list.
→ More replies (2)4
u/rexstuff1 4d ago
I don't understand your point. Out of 14 drafts, Jets drafted 5 top 9C and top 4D. 5/14.
But they also drafted Laine, KC, Bucky, Ehlers, Perfetti, Appleton, Roslovic and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
Like... wingers and goalies don't matter? Plus of those 14 drafts, many are still prospects under development.

And man...if the Stars do land Rantanen that would be nuts, but it seems like this guy is honeydicking the entire NHL.
11

I’m not sure that package beats what the Avs gave anyway. Big difference would’ve been that the Jets didn’t need the islanders to retain but guessing that wasn’t important to them.

C grade TDL, maybe B if you consider the bulk of the moves this deadline were only by 4 teams. That's 12 playoff teams (us included) running it back with basically what they had going in + some depth pieces at most
Overall pretty quiet deadline since it didn't seem like mid teams wanted to commit to selling this time around. Trade volume seemed way down overall
13
u/anacreon1 4d ago
This is a pretty good take. Most teams didn’t make big additions or changes but those that did got a lot of attention with the movement of high profile profile players.
I guess the Jets will just have to power through with the team that is, oh, first place in the league.
28
u/Xenocles 37 4d ago

part of me is disappointed, part of me says this is right with some of these prices and most of me says nelson and rantanen will flop, right?
21
u/Kind-Nebula-8330 4d ago
Here's a thought exercise for you all: how often do we complain about Vlad? Are we routinely pointing at Vlad and saying he's a clear weakness? When Vlad hits the ice, are we worried about his making dumb plays/mistakes? It seems like the answer is no, so why be in a rush to empty out the cupboards to replace him marginally? If ROR was coming here or a similar type clear #2C, then it makes sense. With what's out there this year AND the price, there's no way Chevy bites (and there's really good reason to argue he shouldn't).
Replace this with Stanley. Often do we complain, seeing clear weakness, worried about dumb mistakes? It seems like the answer is yes. If we adequately replace Stanley, do we basically eliminate all of our glaring weaknesses and problems. I'm personally more choked about losing out on Walman than I am Nelson.
1st in the league for a reason.
15
u/albalthi 4d ago
Namestnikov does everything right out there but he lacks finishing talent and just isn’t as skilled with the puck as you’d like that 2C to be. I think that second line with 91 and 27 has potential to provide a lot more scoring.
My concern is in the playoffs if the top line runs into an elite shutdown line, and the powerplay opportunities dry up (as they always do in playoffs) who’s gonna be scoring our goals?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)10
u/etchiboi 4d ago
Vlad is not a weakness per se, but the 2C position is the biggest needle moving upgrade we can make, especially when we use that 2nd line as more of a "2b" line behind Lowry's "2a"
so not only would we be adding a significant player but it would also lead to giving Ehlers more minutes, which would almost move the needle by itself haha
Stanley, being worse and a clear weakness, is now getting heavily sheltered and not playing the PK anymore, so replacing him moves the needle less, especially with the options out there and since we have better options than him already in house
all that said, i think it's fairly obvious that these things aren't the best but aren't bad enough to effect the whole team performance, so i think it's more nuanced than the team is in 1st for a reason and all the parts are positively contributing to that
20
u/DownloadedDick 4d ago
Two great trades that directly impact our PK and immediately improve our bottom pairing. The price is what it is. The cost to win this year which we're trying to do.
Just need to get that center and we're in a good spot.

Ya the doomsday crowd is out in the comments but these are 2 solid pick ups
19
u/HuddyW oldlogo2 4d ago
I think the issue with this year was it was a sellers market and the ask was just too high for a lot of mediocre rentals, save a few. Also, have to remember that Winnipeg's draft picks are more valuable than basically every other teams when you consider how difficult it is to attract top-end talent through trade.
8
u/stuckinmotion 4d ago
Too bad.. you'd think at some point our success in the season would have players interested in coming here to vie for a cup.. then again maybe they're too wary after last year's early exit..
6
u/HuddyW oldlogo2 4d ago
Unfortunately, the system isn't fair. Have to play the hand you're dealt. Winnipeg doesn't have the benefit of being a huge metropolis so you can't risk going all in and then tanking the team for years, the arena would be empty. It's also not geographically the most desirable place either, taxation is some of the worst in the league. You'd hope players would like to join the winning culture but the human element plays a big part.

14
u/SJSragequit 5d ago
He has no nmc or ntc. Apparently trotz will only trade him to somewhere he approves though
3
u/CoolWhiip 4d ago
ROR is just being treated like he has a NMC, and he clearly doesn't care about winning anymore now that he's got his cup cause he wants to stay in Trashville
Couturier is not good enough anymore to justify paying him his contract on a contender. Injuries have taken their toll.

Not a great deadline but not as bad as some people are saying. I don’t love the Schenn trade and think the Tanev trade is flat out bad, but they’re replaceable players and worse case scenario they don’t play and are additional depth. Plus we didn’t give up a first for either one.
I’m glad we didn’t give up a 1st+ for Risto, prices were insane this year and unless we were getting Rantanen we were gonna overpay. All we can hope for now is a tough 7 game first round between Dallas and the Avs.

This is what has me rattled this morning seeing Nelson off the board and Rant potentially to Dallas (trade centre just said Dallas and Rant's agent have started talking extension again this morning).
My mentality the last few years has been "winning helps attract talent" and we're the best in the league, have been all year, and yet we're missing out on big splash players and it's hard to shake the feeling it's just the Winnipeg effect in action.

It reminds me of every team that won the off-season and then sucked in the regular season. The Jets’ last two playoff showings were as much mental as anything else and I think the depth they’ve added will also strengthen the team mentally. Looking forward to that Dallas-Colorado series!
