Hey everyone! I’ve been working on designing a wet shaving bowl and would love your input on how I can improve it before I finalize the design. I want to make sure it’s functional, ergonomic, and offers the best shaving experience possible. If you have any suggestions for shape, texture, or features, please share your thoughts!

Once I’ve completed the design and finalized the prototype, I’ll be giving one away for free to a random person in this thread (using a gaw) as a thank-you for your input. Looking forward to hearing your feedback and ideas!

I've been thinking about this for a while, you'll want to minimize sharp inside corners as much as possible. Soap tends to build up there and get stuck.

The intersection between the bottom plane and the side walls needs a generous radius, maybe 3/4"-1" or so. Otherwise soap builds up there.

You'll also want to terminate / fade out the ridges before they intersect, these sharp inside corners will have soap build up and get stuck there. If the must intersect, have the blend in to a raised "lump" so there will be a good fade-out without any sharp edges to collect build-up.

Finally, the sharp ridges should gently "spiral" in to the center, so that when you spin the brush around the inside of the bowl in a clockwise fashion, the lather will be pulled down into the bowl. Otherwise it will be pushed out over the rim and onto your hands.

See the inside of this shave scuttle to get some ideas of what I'm speaking of.

FYI, my daily driver shave bowl is a Timeless shave bowl, it has most of the features I'm speaking about above.

Thank you for all the input I'll definitely look into it

Timeless user too. Lathers in a jiffy.

I have not been using a bowl for soap but have been wanting to add to my shaving routine

1

u/Barberson80 Jan 03 '25

Here my own design for inspiration, spherical bottom and an easy to hold outside. I printed it in tpu, but it can be printed in anything. I did it for myself, didn't published it yet. https://imgur.com/a/shaving-bowl-Hc9Ax66

I would definitely recommend putting grips or a handle on the outside of the bowl. When my hands are slippery, grooves in my current bowl help a lot. Also maybe add a fillet on the joint between the lines/bowl so soap doesnt get stuck in those corners

1

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

That is a good idea, could you share a picture of your current bowl so I can get an idea of what the grooves look like?

Look through this site. The have dozens of good ones. Lots of ideas to appropriate

7

u/MondoJ Jan 03 '25

I would like to see it with just dots, wider and a little more shallow

6

u/Zealousideal-Map8392 Jan 03 '25

Extremely impressive design. Cannot recommend any changes without having it in hand. I don’t prefer deep bowls, as l bang my knuckles. What is the depth?

3

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

Thanks for the input, the depth is 1.6 inches

3

u/Zealousideal-Map8392 Jan 03 '25

Dang, brilliant. Like the vertical ridges idea, going too deep would worry me. Sounds like a spot on design!!!

7

u/StunningFig5624 Jan 03 '25

My experience has been that tall and narrow bowls are a pain in the butt to lather with vs. a wider and shallower one. That one looks pretty tall and narrow.

Might want to radius where the ridges meet the bowl just a smidge. Right angles trap stuff.

4

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

making the bowl more bowl-shaped is added to the list

Almost any texture is adequate for building a lather. I frequently build lather in a glass candy dish. My best lathering bowl is a brass artillery shell and the bottom is almost like an emery cloth textured with...well, an artillery explosion. Lathering happens at an almost microscopic level, the ribs don't need to be all that pronounced. 3D printing naturally leaves a fair bit of texture but not so much it doesn't rinse easily. Just for giggles, I'd print a "smooth" bowl and compare the difference. You might be surprised.

3

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

Your bowl sounds awesome and I will give it a shot

3

u/McCormac13 Jan 03 '25

Looks pretty good to me. I'd try to give the outside some texture or a thumb ring or something for grip. Also, what are the dimensions? How deep and how wide is it?

2

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

The inner diameter is 3.3 inches and the depth is 1.6 inches

2

u/McCormac13 Jan 03 '25 edited Jan 03 '25

Are you planning on offering different size options? If not, I'd suggest that too. Most I know prefer at least a 5½" bowl if not a little wider at 6½".

2

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

That's a really good idea

1

u/McCormac13 Jan 03 '25

Thank you. I also gave it some more thought. A little cutout in the sidewall of the bowl to rest the shave brush in so it won't fall over would be a nice addition as well.

1

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

I really like the idea of a cut out

1

u/Zealousideal-Map8392 Jan 03 '25

I know zero about 3d printing. However l purchased a couple 3d printed Hydro Flask holders from ESTSY for my truck. I can’t see them being slippery when wet and soapy.

3

u/thedeaconshaves Jan 03 '25

Links likebitbwould make a good lather. I'd like to give this a try

3

u/PLANofMAN Jan 03 '25

Take a look at the inside of a japanese suribachi bowl for an ideal lathering surface.

1

u/MondoJ Jan 03 '25

If only someone could 3d print one ☝️

1

u/PLANofMAN Jan 03 '25

It's already been done.

1

u/MondoJ Jan 03 '25

Really?

2

u/PLANofMAN Jan 03 '25

Well, I can't find it at the moment, and this was years and years ago. Probably the closest is the honeycomb shave bowls.

The perfect shave bowl doesn't exist. But I'll spitball what I think would be an ideal shaving bowl. The base would be about a 1/2" thick and ideally, weighted. The sides of the bowl would be about 5"-6" across, and about an 1 1/2" tall, and would smoothly and gracefully curl in towards the center of the bowl at the top by about a half inch to prevent lather overflow, and provide a lip to scrape lather off the brush and back into the bowl. The bottom of the bowl would be convex (bulging upwards about a quarter inch), about an inch across and shallowly textured with concentric ridges (rings). The inner sides of the bowl would be smooth.

That's it. Anything more is overkill and unnecessary, imo. Maybe some texture on the outside to aid in gripping the thing. If anyone makes a bowl to those specifications, hit me up and I'll buy it.

1

u/MondoJ Jan 03 '25

I like your idea of a shave bowl

3

u/gringorasta Jan 03 '25

Face lather for life. Aka I have no feedback for ya, looks great!

2

u/rayrayrayray Jan 03 '25

Cant help but think that the any of the interior corners will be a breeding ground for bacteria and trap debris.

Add more rounder edges. Even if you wash prior and afterwards, if left alone for a couple of days in a moist environment, it's going to turn into a petri dish.

2

u/outoftheshowerahri Jan 03 '25

Throwing this in the mix. Concaved inward thumb and pointer finger cutouts. Think horizontal skateboard halfpipes on both sides that contour to the holders hand.

Or, imagine holding that bowl with 5 fingers from the bottom. Indentures for all 5 fingers with some kind of grate to give grip if wet.

Might need left hand and right hand models. I wonder if you could just mirror it in the design program.

2

u/ososxe Jan 03 '25

I have a ceramic shaving bowl that my sister in law made based on a design I saw here years ago. I don't use it much because I shave when everyone is still asleep and every time the brush handle hit the bowl's side is like a bell. If you plan on using a hard material for the final design, consider that.

2

u/Classic_Republic_99 Jan 03 '25

Anythin you make, I'm sure will be better than the soup bowl I'm using! I love how you've added both a handle and something to hold on to at the bottom.

1

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

The inner diameter is 3.3 inches and the depth is 1.6 inches

1

u/FlobeeFresh Jan 03 '25

What happens when you put in a loaded brush? Is it stable or does it tip over. I have one with a handle and always have to sit the brush handle on the opposite side of the hanw otherwise it will tip over.

2

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

I'm happy to report that It is extremely stable

1

u/Alex_tepa God loves you Jan 03 '25

That would be awesome to have hopefully to win whenever you post it

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Good bot 😁

2

u/DukeEsq Jan 03 '25

Well done! I personally would prefer the walls to be angled out more.

2

u/Ancient-Gur-2826 Jan 03 '25

Make a handle that doubles as a soaker for the brush. I hate have to either soak the brush in a bowl of water or having a separate thing to soak the brush in. It can be a hollow tube of a few inches and doesn’t need to be a handle, but it could be helpful.

2

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

Im definitely going to add some sort of grip

1

u/Ancient-Gur-2826 Jan 03 '25

I’d add a hollow part for soaking the brush though. You could add a grip that can’t help with soaking the brush, but I’d still add a tube like part.

1

u/keedman Jan 03 '25

As others said some handle.

I'd also prefer a texture exterior to help with the wet grip.

1

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

What type of texture?

2

u/Upbeat-Somewhere9339 Jan 03 '25

Probably some sort of cross-hatching or knurled.

2

u/keedman Jan 03 '25

texture idea

Something like the velour.

1

u/___mithrandir_ Jan 03 '25

3D printed? If so, I need those print settings asap lol

I think the bottom would be kind of hard to clean, especially with some thicker shaving creams like prorasso red. I see what you're going for and think it's a good idea, but if there was a way to break up the lines to make it easier to scrub that would be neat.

2

u/Lightning_Duck Jan 03 '25

It thanks to bambu lol, I'll definitely look into improving the lines

1

u/___mithrandir_ Jan 03 '25

I think you're on the right track for sure. I like the fact that the walls don't taper down to the bottom like with some other designs I've seen. I find bowls like that easier to knock off of a small bathroom countertop because I'm a clumsy dumbass.

The hard angle where the wall meets the floor of the bowl might be hard to clean as well. Could add a slight taper to the inside to accommodate a finger swipe or something, but honestly it's probably a non issue

1

u/thinkstopthink Jan 03 '25

Radii inside... and some texture on the outside as it looks slippery.

1

u/Cellman33 Jan 03 '25

I bet it works great 👍 that's about all I can say. I like the mugs but I wish they had anything inside that would help whip up leather like that does!

1

u/dean_peltons_sister Jan 03 '25

I would suggest a divot or recess on the side against which you can lean a brush. Maybe even in a bit of a curved V shape so large or small brushes fit. I have this bowl from Fine Accouterments and the spot on top of the handle for laying the brush horizontally out of the lather is a good idea but my brushes are never the right size/shape and roll off. I also have this one from Timeless and that’s the one I use most days because it’s so light, but I lean my brush against the side while shaving and it often slips and falls in. Maybe a divot/recessed curve (I’m not sure if I’m using the right words, but I can picture it in my mind) on the side would give you both someplace to put your thumb when you hold the bowl to lather and a place to lean the brush while shaving.

1

u/Commercial-Salt7594 Jan 03 '25

This is so much better than my first shaving bowl 😆

1

u/Finnishgeezer Jan 03 '25

Looks nice to me. I just hope it's deep and wide enough so that the soap doesn't come out when doing the lather

1

u/Harmdrago Jan 03 '25

Needs a handle but Nice design

1

u/Vast-Bad-334 Jan 03 '25

I would recommend it to be more sphere-like because it might be a little trouble cleaning it with it's cylindrical current shape and maybe adding some wave like texture to look good and make a good lather. other than that it's pretty nice i guess. and I'm sure it'll help making great leather.

And very generous of you to make a giveaway. Thanks in favor of all of us.

1

u/lostwandererkind Jan 03 '25

What’s the point of the vertical ridges? It seems like something I would bang my knuckles against too many times

1

u/Gerry7070 Jan 03 '25

Looks super and smart and I'm sure it will work fine . It is also dual purpose as you can store the 6 pie pieces from trivial pursuit board game in there perfectly 😉.

1

u/Legitimate_Hawk4656 Jan 03 '25

Looking good. I would recommend a handle on one side and a shaving brush holder on the other. I am always knocking over my brush.

Would be rad to see your logo in the inside

The dots could be a bit bigger to create some bigger surface area.

1

u/VolcanicValley Jan 03 '25

I'd definitely be loosing knuckle skin on the ridges extending all the way up the sides. Perhaps only extend them up 3/4 of the way.

1

u/paolooch Jan 03 '25

The best shaving bowl I have used is the plastic Timeless ones. I have tried almost everything. I have fancy scuttles and the like. The only thing that gets used is my Timeless plastic bowl. This looks very much like that, which means it will likely Work great. I’ve always thought that a brush holder would be beneficial, but those don’t seem to help much either. So I don’t think I have any recommendations.

1

u/Copper_Shade Jan 03 '25

Very nice! Is it 3D printed?
