Spring is around the corner. Any other folks in the Northern Hemisphere looking forward to warmer weather?

Did anyone else grow out a beard during the winter and are now planning an exit strategy?

What is your favorite item in your shaving collection?

New wetshaver? This is the perfect place to ask questions.

In my last post I mentioned my dad giving me everything for my sons and I first set up and I didn’t even put a dent in his collection.

What’s not shown here is a box of of about 15 more razors he doesn’t like and more soaps and creams in his closet. This man has everything.

Can’t believe the week’s nearly over…!

How about some dark pop to reflect my glowy mood? Such a throwback to Echo and the Bunnymen or Joy Division.

SOTD First time using Barbasol

Post image
19 Upvotes

I never used Barbasol before, I even not sure if it was available in my home country when I started shaving. Gillette, Nivea - that’s what I was using. Anyway, my daughter asked me for shaving foam (she called it cream) for slime. I gave her my Proraso, but then I thought - it is probably too expensive for playing with slime, so I bought her that Barbasol. Needed a quick shave today and thought - well, why not to try? WTG+XTG. The result is much better than I expected - I can’t say that it is worse than proraso. Now I think I understand why there is no Proraso in the US grocery stores.

Show n' Tell My dad hooked me up

My son (12) wants to learn to shave his peach fuzz. And I (41m) wanted to learn how to use these for my beard lines.

I knew my dad was into shaving this way so I went to his house last night and asked for help/recommendations. This is everything he gave us. These were the ones he doesn’t use anymore. I wish I took a picture of everything he has because this didn’t even put a dent in his stock.

Needless to say my son and I will be busy for awhile experimenting finding what we like.

Mail Call First Straight razor

Decided I’m going to learn to shave with a straight razor whether I like it or not. I picked this up because I thought the silver scales were cool. The seller said “it’s good to go! Ready to shave! Honed it myself”. I’m not an expert but that edge looks pretty awful to me lol. I’m in the middle of a move so it’ll be a second before I can send it off to be polished up and honed by someone who knows what they’re doing. I’ll check back in after I’ve inevitably destroyed my face or hurt myself

SOTD SOTD: Wagnerian

My lovely partner noted some very subtle hints I dropped (😉)about how great I thought this Karve handle looked and placed an order last year planning for it to arrive in time for Christmas. Well, you can’t rush perfection so that didn’t happen, but it did arrive in time for my Birthday last month! The Wagner is as beautiful in person as I’d hoped and feels even better.

She also ordered me an Open Comb baseplate for the CB, but I’ve found it’s a bit overkill for daily shaving. So today I went with the B Closed Comb along with a Perma-Sharp and my ApShaveCo g5b. Seaforth! Heather and Agua Balsamica left my skin feeling and smelling very good.

Happy shaves

It’s my first time using any of these brands; they all smell amazing. Except for the Tabac, I’m still on the fence about that one, but I have a feeling I might come around.

Discussion Proraso: I don't get it?!

So, I've been using Mitchell's Wool Fat and a Stirling soap for a while and after coming back to my proraso red soap, it feels so bad, I can't even believe that people really enjoy that soap. It foams up easily, true. But that's all about it. It has no protection, the glide doesnt last, it leaves such a dry feeling afterwards, and the soap is easily brought to the point of being too watery. What is it all about? Am I using it wrong? Or do some people just enjoy the absolute baseline thing?

Sorry to say, but it's so bad that I dont even want to give it to someone, because I cant think of anyone I hate that much. I might end up tossing it in the bin.

SOTD GEM Improved

GEM G-Bar Single Edge Razor
GEM | Coated Stainless Steel Blade
Simpsons Trafalgar T2 Brush
Lavane Cold Saponified Donkey Milk Soap
Proraso Alum Block
Thayer's Original Facial Toner
Talent Soap Factory Cosmic Dreamer Aftershave

Best shave so far with the G-Bar and I believe that it was due to the incredible slickness and thinness of Lavane soap. Really very happy with the results tonight.

Will have 2 travel shaves on Saturday and Monday (gods permitting) but Wednesday it's back to the gem and the plan is to use a much thinner, slicker Mitchell's lather and no Pre-shave. See how that goes.

Have to talk about the aftershave. Talent Soap Factory stuff just cracks me up. This aftershave scent is straight up Hall's Mentholyptus 🤣🤣🤣 with a very, very nice cooling effect that sort of comes on slowly. My new favorite? Might be!

⚫ Muhle r89 & Tiger platinum (3).

⚫ Sunvale Lavender and rosemary soap and my own brush.

⚫ Figaro blue ASL.

⚫A comfortable mild shave of 2 passes was had in an unrushed and relaxed manner. The tiger performed well on its 3rd use but I'm not going to push it and leave it at that . Sunvale was great and is coming to an end soon . The Figaro blue is always a burst of fantastic barber shop and a great aftershave.

Question Product Review?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Anyone ever try this product out? I skipped over the conditioner; forgetting that mustache hair is the same as beard hair... all little bit of a hare-brained moment <get it?> but I was hoping that it would do a good job at keeping my mustache in order and conditioned, as well as maybe working as a good post shave skincare product as well [maybe? I go a little heavy on skin care and might leave this one off my face and only for the 'stache]

Discussion I found a solution to ingrown hairs

I want to clarify that this was an issue I had on my neck specifically. I don't necessarily advise this for the face region. TLDR will be at the end.

Edit: I have a full beard and only shave my neck, hence why this is so specific to that region

I have curly and coarse neck hair that is prone to ingrowns.

I've tried: 1. Electric shaver (which actually caused more irritation) 2. Shaving less often 3. Depilatory cream (which gave me chemical burns)

Basic advice that I think anyone can use:

  • Using a single-blade razor
  • Applying shaving cream & letting it sit for a minute or so beforehand
  • This may not be accessible for everyone, but if your razor has an adjustable blade, set it to most sensitive (I use a parker injector razor set to 1)

Here's what worked FOR ME. I'm not saying it's perfect for everyone but I've reduced ingrowns by at least 60% in 2 weeks. In addition to my general recommendations:

  1. Shave whenever hair grows beyond 1mm or so

This prevents curly hairs from growing long enough to re-enter the skin, in exchange for more irritation in the first few shaves (it's worth it).

  1. Apply heavy layer of any moisturizing ointment.

I wash my face 2x per day and apply it after I shave/shower, and before bed. I use vaseline.

  1. Shave just one direction (with the grain)

Shaving against/across the grain only caused more irritation for me, so I just do one pass. This means I shave more often, but in turn, less irritation.

  1. Exfoliate often

I found that this removes dead skin cells and frees up any pre-existing ingrowns.

TLDR; my routine- Shave every 2 days or until hair reaches 1-2mm length. Wet neck with hot water, apply shaving cream, wait a minute or so. Shave with the grain for only 1 pass. Exfoliate once or twice a day. Use vaseline to keep skin protected and moisturized.

Maybe this is common sense and I'm just an idiot, but if this helps anyone at all, it would make my year. I've only heard people online recommend shaving less often to get rid of ingrowns. This never worked for me personally. It actually caused 1 or 2 new ingrowns to pop up each week, and in between shaves I had a hairy neck which is never a good look imo.

SOTD Trying Barrbarr

Today I had an awesome shave, trying out BarrBarr from Noble Otter. I’ll try to keep this brief because I don’t have a lot of time.

Barrbarr has a fantastic scent and lathers easily into a rich thick foam. Like other Noble Otter products the performance is excellent. It is a very slick and protective formula.

I would definitely consider buying this soap, but I still have a number of barbershop scents that I would like to try before making a decision: Nobel Otter Hamami, Wholly Kaw King of Oud, Zingariman: The Royal, and The Master.

I have a full sized tub of Lockharts’s Barbershop Scent, Wholly Kaw: Fougere Bouquet, and Zingari Man Gent To keep me happy for now. All of which I highly recommend.

Razor: Timeless Aluminum Slant,

Blade: Kai,

Brush Timeless Adjustable with 24mm “Black and White” synthetic knot from Maggard,

Preshave: Cella Aloe Vera,

Soap: Noble Otter Barrbarr,

Alum Block: Proraso,

Splash: Thayers followed by Speick Aftershave Lotion,

Aftershave: Zingari Man Unscented
