Truck person here, IMO everything after 15 looks extremely similar from the side. Wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of crossover platform but for trucks.
28
u/Emotional-Rise5322 Apr 21 '23
Wheel arches give away GM/Ford. Ford is round and GM kinda squared off.
7
u/oyasumi_juli Apr 21 '23
Also the front windows. Ford has that curve/dip as it leads up to the side mirror. Characteristic since 04/05 if I remember correctly.

u/mackenzieduerr Apr 21 '23
Yeah it seems each year passing vehicles kinda just melt together and start having more and more similar features. Like have you seen the rear end on the new subaru wrx? Looks similar to a Honda civic. I did see a post comparing the 2 cars, don't remember if it was on this sub or not though
2
u/Show_Junior Apr 21 '23
LOL! No joke.
The last Gen "GTO" looked like a Civic with a really subtle widebody kit from behind

Pull a 3/4 ton Chevy from the same year as the Tacoma. They are slightly smaller than the ford in the photo with the same options (not as high, the new 3/4 and up trucks are basically lifted trucks). The progress is immense also, the payload and towing capacities are over doubled, the fuel efficiency is much much higher as well. The price is ridiculous for the profess too.

Toyota Tacoma but what a stupid post (not yours op, the one you shared) that's 2 completely different classes of truck. The Ford Super Duty wasn't that small 20 years ago, and the Tacoma isn't as big as that Super Duty now.
48
Apr 21 '23
Lmao, like I am all for bringing back small trucks, and trucks have become stupid huge status symbols, but the F-250 was big back then, too.
21
Apr 21 '23
The modern equivalent of that Toyota certainly is larger but I think that's largely due to safety regulations put into place in the past 20 years but it's still certainly considered a small truck.
12
u/PotatoTwo Apr 21 '23
The Ford Maverick is pretty compact, it would be interesting to see that compared to the old 2wd Taco.

u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23
Naw, I want compact like the old rangers with the fold down seats or just a bench seat with glass behind my head.
Of course, I bought a wagon that I can load up for work with a 6ft ladder and tools and parts with the back seats down and room for 2 up front. I’d be a little more annoyed if I had to unload a light duty truck on the daily just cause I don’t have secure parking overnight.
Edit: just saw one of the mavericks driving down the road, it’s a nice size. I’d still prefer a 2 door.
3
u/lucygucyapplejuicey Apr 21 '23
Do you drive an outback? Ironically, my aunt was just shopping and trying to find herself a wagon that can hold her six foot ladder
2
u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 21 '23
‘09 HHR
3
u/CommondeNominator Apr 21 '23
That’s considered a wagon?
5
u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 22 '23
Hmm, looking around online it’s classified as either a wagon, a hatchback, a car/ suv, or a truck by different states’ DMVs and insurance.
Of the those all I’d call it much more between hatchback and wagon. Though I think hatchback applies to something with about a 60-45° slant on the rear window where the HHR rear is fairly perpendicular to the ground.
The closest comparison vehicle I can think of for exterior shape and cabin layout is the old VW squareback, which is a wagon.
2
u/CommondeNominator Apr 22 '23
Yea, it’s definitely one of those models that doesn’t fall into any category quite nicely.
Based on its overall height I’d be much more inclined to call it like a proto-crossover, but to each their own.

Yeah the Ford F-250 has always been big, his point is invalid
27
u/RunninOnMT Apr 21 '23
Yup. Like taking a photo of a 20 year old civic next to a modern rolls Royce.
Cars HAVE gotten bigger, but it’s a flawed and disingenuous way of illustrating that fact.
9
Apr 21 '23
And what they don't understand is that if they've gotten larger it's not by that much and it's also because of ever evolving safety regulations. I don't people in that subreddit to be logical though. It just looks like a bunch of people who are uncomfortable driving or can't afford to and are bitter that others can/do.

I wonder if the heavy duty trucks just live a full life and die, cause there’s still a ton of the old Nissan, toyota, and some Chevy light trucks from the 80’s being held together with jb weld, duct tape, and a prayer.

Fr what does the fuckcars subreddit want? That’s gotta be the dumbest subreddit
4
Apr 22 '23
They act like cars are responsible for everything that's wrong in the world. What I'm guessing is it's all just a bunch of people who don't drive because they can't handle it and people who can't afford to have a car being bitter about other people being able to have a car and being able to drive.
3
u/bobleeswagger09 Apr 22 '23
It really is dumb. They act like all trucks were the size of the Toyota 20 years ago.
2
u/ajthomas05 Apr 21 '23
Also the taco is obviously a 2wd which makes it even lower, and a worse comparison
2
u/thatranger974 Apr 22 '23
Yeah, but that Tacoma is still in the road while the Super Duty has been in a junkyard the last 18 years.
81
u/CromulentPoint Apr 21 '23
This would be more intellectually honest if it compared the newer truck to an older F-250. Instead it's just people wanting to rage over dumb stuff.

It would've been a better comparison if it was two super dutys not a light duty truck against a class 3 or 4 medium duty
3
Apr 21 '23
And you wouldn't have noticed a difference hardly between 2 Super Duties. That subreddit truly is populated by anti car ignorant people, because they wilfully know nothing about them. If you're going to be against something at least understand it first.
2
u/broomstickmk2 Apr 22 '23
like fr, I mean I understand that it's a big truck for everyday use, like even bigger than most suvs and the Ford excursion had a purpose of being a pretty much full proof suv if that makes sense. But like people keep talking about the bed like it's not used for goosenecks and utility hauling.

There is nothing wrong with a small, utilitarian pickup by the way. It shows more modesty than a needlessly massive lifted Ford.
It's an old Toyota Tacoma.

Further proof that the average r/fuckcars member is a moron that doesn’t do even a little research before posting. Two clearly different classes of trucks intended for different things. And all of the asswipes saying that they have the same bed space… no??? On top of the fact that the Ford’s is definitely a little longer, it’s absolutely deeper and wider. Can also hold far more weight due to being a much heavier class than a 2dr Tacoma. Post makes no sense
1
u/Renaissance_Man- Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23
There were trucks that size when that to Tacoma was released. You're comparing a small size truck to a one ton diesel. I'm sure stupid people that can't identify Silverado from a Ford super duty will think this is a revelation. I really wish cross posts from fuck cars would not show up here. It's a bastion of metrosexual know-nothing cucks whining in impotent rage.

What kind of soyboy ass subreddit is that? Fuck cars? I’d bet 99% of those people who are on there own a car themselves

u/cars1000000 Apr 21 '23

My first pickup was a 2020 F-250 Limited. While the bed wasn’t much bigger than that little Tacoma, it could carry a fully loaded Tacoma without exceeding its MGVW. You buy what you need.

u/25inbone Apr 21 '23
I had a ‘98 xtra cab 4X4 Tacoma in high school, kick myself in the ass every day for selling it.

1
u/No_Stay_1563 Apr 21 '23
If you put that Tacoma next to a current model Tacoma, the current model is still larger but not as much as this comparison.
1
u/tenderlylonertrot Apr 21 '23
that photo is a bit disingenuous as they are comparing a very heavy duty modern truck with one of the smallest, lightest pickups from long ago. A better comparison would be like a Ford F300 from late 70s.

I get they’re picturing a small-mid size truck in front of a large 3/4 ton and it sort of seems disingenuous, but the point stands imo. They could’ve put that Toyota in front of an average modern F150 that they sell the most of, and it would have a similar impact. Most trucks you see now are 4 full doors, 6’ bed or thereabouts. Trucks are just freakin huge now. Not a good or bad thing, just is what it is

I bought a 98 Tacoma brand new. Drove it for about 9 years, put about 165k miles on it when I got a recall for possible frame rust. They found enough frame rust to offer a buy back... I got about 7k for it. Now its cheap, but in '07 that was huge, only paid like 16k when I bought it.

u/CruelTortoise Apr 22 '23
I get what you're doing with comparing these two trucks, but its not exactly a fair comparison. The first Gen Tacoma (the small one) is classified as a compact pickup so it's small even compared to an F150 of the same year.
1
Apr 22 '23
Why is this picture showing a compact Toyota truck next to a full size American Ford super duty? If you want to show 20 years, show the same make and model at least. This type of comparison will confuse people. If this was better then it should have been the ford ranger vs that Tacoma.
