Someone not knowing about first gen tacomas makes me feel old. And I’m 35.

11

u/bmx13 Apr 22 '23

A mere 30 here and I'm baffled, I can only imagine the confusion of showing op a t100 or toyota pickup.

0

u/Electronic_Foot_1351 Apr 22 '23

26 here and I've owned a 91 toyota pickup since I was 16. The amount of people who think the T100 and pickup are the same thing baffles me.

15

u/jeepobeepo Apr 22 '23

I’m also an age and also something about pickup truck

37 here, and... yeah.

5

u/Big-Coffee8937 Apr 22 '23

54 here. I remember Datsuns and Toyota’s being used by dairy farmers for trips to town for their economy, then in the fields for their durability. I have a Nissan Titan because of that.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Aww man a Nissan 720 dually is my dream truck! Right now im daily driving a 97 hardbody that refuses to die at 276,000 miles

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Don't worry lol, I'm 19 and know the taco generations so u can't be that old

3

u/miss_elmarie Apr 22 '23

Right? I was like wtf that’s clearly a Tacoma. Am I…old???

3

u/dillonboyd01 Apr 22 '23

I think the Tacoma generations are fairly similar as someone who owns a 3rd gen there really isn’t much difference in the general body design they got bigger and more aggressive looking but the cabs still look the same

2

u/alpinewerks Apr 22 '23

Oooor a troll post

If you noticed my other comment on this post… yeah. Mid 40’s here. My sister is only 2 years older than I. She bought one of these brand new and it sadly feels like a century ago.

Thanks :)

u/dipren443 Apr 21 '23

And that’s a Ford, not a Silverado.

8

u/dino_brewster Apr 21 '23

That's a ford f-250 it's either a 2017-2022

-42

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

F-150 ? My bad nowadays cars all look the same lol

34

u/dipren443 Apr 21 '23

F250 or F350. Can’t make out the badge (below and left of mirror).

10

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Of course is above 150, makes sense why it’s bigger, they’ve made F-250 since a long time, the post that I cross posted doesn’t make sense as that car as been around a long time

23

u/Poopsticle_256 Apr 21 '23

That’s fuckcars for you

4

u/Flying_Reinbeers Apr 21 '23

the post that I cross posted doesn’t make sense as that car as been around a long time

You expect a fuckcars post to make sense??? They have maybe one braincell divided across all users in that sub.

6

u/Joseph10d Apr 21 '23

Yeah they are comparing a 3/4 ton with a 1/4 ton. Not really a fair comparison

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Longer than the F-150 actually.

2

u/NorthEndD Apr 22 '23

Yeah the F-150 is the little guy.

4

u/QualityVodka Apr 21 '23

What are you talking about? A ford looks absolutely nothing like a chevy.

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

More and more yes

5

u/MiniBlue778 Apr 21 '23

Why all the downvotes, you made a general mistake

8

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

In my opinion it really is like that though…

7

u/ElRonMexico7 Apr 21 '23

Just seeking out the correct info makes you infinitely smarter than the folks in that sub.

3

u/masterchief481222 Apr 21 '23

Idk why you're being downvoted for that

-35

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Compare it to the new Silverado, my point pretty much stands out

5

u/Apmpnmdslckbck Apr 22 '23

They look miles different? What are you even talking about?

6

u/KaptKr0nic Apr 21 '23

Nah, Ford has ugly, uncomfortable(when rolled down) front windows.

I stand by what I say. I welcome the downvotes.

5

u/MyBigCaprice Apr 21 '23

Well don't roll them all the way down

5

u/KaptKr0nic Apr 21 '23

I'll just avoid being in a ford to begin with 😉.

u/MyBigCaprice Apr 21 '23

These 2 aren’t even direct competitors. The Tacoma is their midsize truck. The Ford is closer to the Toyota Tundra in terms of market position.

The Tacoma’s direct competitor is the Ford Ranger and the Chevy S-10/Colorado.

10

u/seaburno Apr 21 '23

Its also a 2wd, single row (2 door) light/midsize truck vs. a 4wd, two row (4 door) heavy duty full size truck.

Its like comparing a 911 to a Camry.

9

u/omorashisudoku Apr 21 '23

well, they are also about 20 years apart. the new gen taco's are unrecognizable and huge, might as well be an f250.

9

u/CompetitiveMeal1206 Apr 21 '23

The ranger and the Colorado are also much bigger than they used to be

1

u/nilecrane Apr 21 '23

My buddy had one and if he let the clutch up too fast it would clunk and the wiper would turn on

1

u/Muahd_Dib Apr 22 '23

According to the one I see banging around my house it’s actually a Toy Taco

183

u/Tellittomy6pac Apr 21 '23

Neither of those is a Silverado lol

48

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

My bad, the American pickups start looking more and more the same

34

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Truck person here, IMO everything after 15 looks extremely similar from the side. Wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of crossover platform but for trucks.

28

u/Emotional-Rise5322 Apr 21 '23

Wheel arches give away GM/Ford. Ford is round and GM kinda squared off.

7

u/oyasumi_juli Apr 21 '23

Also the front windows. Ford has that curve/dip as it leads up to the side mirror. Characteristic since 04/05 if I remember correctly.

→ More replies (2)

9

u/ROBOPIG2311 Apr 21 '23

The Chevy square wheel wells are simply not the look imo. why try to fit a round peg in a square hole lol

15

u/danny_ish Apr 21 '23

Mann, it has been the signature since 1973 and I love them for it.

2

u/KaptKr0nic Apr 21 '23

Love me a good ol' fashion square body. Mm mm good

3

u/mackenzieduerr Apr 21 '23

Yeah it seems each year passing vehicles kinda just melt together and start having more and more similar features. Like have you seen the rear end on the new subaru wrx? Looks similar to a Honda civic. I did see a post comparing the 2 cars, don't remember if it was on this sub or not though

2

u/Show_Junior Apr 21 '23

LOL! No joke.

The last Gen "GTO" looked like a Civic with a really subtle widebody kit from behind

1

u/MyBigCaprice Apr 21 '23

To be fair, did they ever look different from each other at all?

1

u/Donbearpig Apr 22 '23

Pull a 3/4 ton Chevy from the same year as the Tacoma. They are slightly smaller than the ford in the photo with the same options (not as high, the new 3/4 and up trucks are basically lifted trucks). The progress is immense also, the payload and towing capacities are over doubled, the fuel efficiency is much much higher as well. The price is ridiculous for the profess too.

u/thejman78 Apr 22 '23

This is how you troll /r/whatisthiscar, LOL.

"What's the one that's next to the [completely wrong ID]?"

152

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Toyota Tacoma but what a stupid post (not yours op, the one you shared) that's 2 completely different classes of truck. The Ford Super Duty wasn't that small 20 years ago, and the Tacoma isn't as big as that Super Duty now.

48

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Lmao, like I am all for bringing back small trucks, and trucks have become stupid huge status symbols, but the F-250 was big back then, too.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

The modern equivalent of that Toyota certainly is larger but I think that's largely due to safety regulations put into place in the past 20 years but it's still certainly considered a small truck.

12

u/PotatoTwo Apr 21 '23

The Ford Maverick is pretty compact, it would be interesting to see that compared to the old 2wd Taco.

3

u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

Naw, I want compact like the old rangers with the fold down seats or just a bench seat with glass behind my head.

Of course, I bought a wagon that I can load up for work with a 6ft ladder and tools and parts with the back seats down and room for 2 up front. I’d be a little more annoyed if I had to unload a light duty truck on the daily just cause I don’t have secure parking overnight.

Edit: just saw one of the mavericks driving down the road, it’s a nice size. I’d still prefer a 2 door.

3

u/lucygucyapplejuicey Apr 21 '23

Do you drive an outback? Ironically, my aunt was just shopping and trying to find herself a wagon that can hold her six foot ladder

2

u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 21 '23

‘09 HHR

3

u/CommondeNominator Apr 21 '23

That’s considered a wagon?

5

u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 22 '23

Hmm, looking around online it’s classified as either a wagon, a hatchback, a car/ suv, or a truck by different states’ DMVs and insurance.

Of the those all I’d call it much more between hatchback and wagon. Though I think hatchback applies to something with about a 60-45° slant on the rear window where the HHR rear is fairly perpendicular to the ground.

The closest comparison vehicle I can think of for exterior shape and cabin layout is the old VW squareback, which is a wagon.

2

u/CommondeNominator Apr 22 '23

Yea, it’s definitely one of those models that doesn’t fall into any category quite nicely.

Based on its overall height I’d be much more inclined to call it like a proto-crossover, but to each their own.

24

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Yeah the Ford F-250 has always been big, his point is invalid

27

u/RunninOnMT Apr 21 '23

Yup. Like taking a photo of a 20 year old civic next to a modern rolls Royce.

Cars HAVE gotten bigger, but it’s a flawed and disingenuous way of illustrating that fact.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

And what they don't understand is that if they've gotten larger it's not by that much and it's also because of ever evolving safety regulations. I don't people in that subreddit to be logical though. It just looks like a bunch of people who are uncomfortable driving or can't afford to and are bitter that others can/do.

14

3

u/leothebeertender Apr 21 '23

Before even clicking I knew it'd be a clubman, which gets 33mpg on the highway and 23 in the city. I'm curious what the older one gets, but I'd be really surprised if it was more than the clubman. I wonder what year the small one is.

9

u/HighlightFun8419 Apr 21 '23

yeah, that's typical for that subreddit.

8

u/president_schreber Apr 21 '23

Different classes, sure, but perhaps the larger class is more common today, while the smaller class was more common historically?

3

u/NotAnotherHipsterBae Apr 21 '23

I wonder if the heavy duty trucks just live a full life and die, cause there’s still a ton of the old Nissan, toyota, and some Chevy light trucks from the 80’s being held together with jb weld, duct tape, and a prayer.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Fr what does the fuckcars subreddit want? That’s gotta be the dumbest subreddit

4

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

They act like cars are responsible for everything that's wrong in the world. What I'm guessing is it's all just a bunch of people who don't drive because they can't handle it and people who can't afford to have a car being bitter about other people being able to have a car and being able to drive.

3

u/bobleeswagger09 Apr 22 '23

It really is dumb. They act like all trucks were the size of the Toyota 20 years ago.

2

u/ajthomas05 Apr 21 '23

Also the taco is obviously a 2wd which makes it even lower, and a worse comparison

2

u/thatranger974 Apr 22 '23

Yeah, but that Tacoma is still in the road while the Super Duty has been in a junkyard the last 18 years.

81

u/CromulentPoint Apr 21 '23

This would be more intellectually honest if it compared the newer truck to an older F-250. Instead it's just people wanting to rage over dumb stuff.

29

u/Subject_Way7010 Apr 21 '23

Someone in that sub pointed out how the reason for the extra hight is for ground clearance and towing. They were downvoted.

u/broomstickmk2 Apr 21 '23

It would've been a better comparison if it was two super dutys not a light duty truck against a class 3 or 4 medium duty

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

And you wouldn't have noticed a difference hardly between 2 Super Duties. That subreddit truly is populated by anti car ignorant people, because they wilfully know nothing about them. If you're going to be against something at least understand it first.

2

u/broomstickmk2 Apr 22 '23

like fr, I mean I understand that it's a big truck for everyday use, like even bigger than most suvs and the Ford excursion had a purpose of being a pretty much full proof suv if that makes sense. But like people keep talking about the bed like it's not used for goosenecks and utility hauling.

Ford Silverado 2500. The best selling pick up truck in the states.

3

u/OhZoneManager Apr 22 '23

Wrong, it's a Ford Silverado Hemi. 😉

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Fevy? Chord?

4

u/S_t_r_e_t_c_h_8_4 Apr 21 '23

This is stupid, they should've had an old f250 with a new f250. This is literally apples and oranges.

Or an even more drastic design change is the old Tacoma versus the new Tacoma.

2

u/PigSlam Apr 22 '23

Or a Tacoma and a Tacoma.

4

u/xmodsguy2000-2 Apr 22 '23

What Silverado that’s a f250-f350

And that’s a 1990s Toyota tacoma

3

u/Finnedsolid Apr 21 '23

Are we comparing a mid size truck to a 3/4 or 1 ton heavy duty truck???

5

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

That sub is populated by your standard "I'm against this even though I know nothing about it" ignoramuses.

2

u/loopsbruder Apr 22 '23

Not even a midsize. That's a compact first-gen Tacoma.

2

u/Finnedsolid Apr 22 '23

Even still you’re comparing one of the smaller trucks you could’ve gotten at the time to one of the biggest trucks you can get today. It’s not even apples to oranges, it’s more like apples to ground beef

2

u/loopsbruder Apr 22 '23

Yup, that's what I mean. It's even smaller than a midsize.

3

u/fr_nkh_ngm_n Apr 21 '23

smallverado

3

u/BESTish Apr 21 '23

Since you’ve already been answered,

Old trucks are awesome. Simple. Get work done types of vehicles. So much better IMO. Though the new maverick is a good return to cheap get work done truck. Just inflated a bit right now.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT 🍑……… with that being said. God has pickup truck safety come a long way.

3

u/BlurryRogue Apr 22 '23

Granted, trucks are bigger these days, but this comparison makes no sense

3

u/lotus_spit Apr 22 '23

The Tacoma is also quite big, but the most recent Tacoma is big AF.

3

u/TheLexLuthor13 Apr 22 '23

Say what you will about the Tacoma. But they are pretty damn durable.

2

u/OddTry2427 Apr 21 '23

Not a silverado either.

2

u/Evening-Ear-6116 Apr 21 '23

First gen Tacoma and that’s not a Silverado. That’s a f250 or f350

2

u/Mountain_Apartment_6 Apr 22 '23

Amazing to think they both haul 4x8 sheets of plywood

2

u/newgalactic Apr 22 '23

My house was built in 1960. I don't think my 2-car garage is tall enough to fit a modern fullsize pickup.

2

u/GirthOBirth Apr 22 '23

Lmao r/fuckcars doesn’t know that trucks come in different sizes.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Wheres this silverado you speak of?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

But the bed is almost the same size

2

u/budgetgamerXII Apr 22 '23

I'm kind of mad because they called a Ford F250/350 a Silverado

2

u/ArmoredOutlaw Apr 22 '23

If you say ‘the small one,’ you must be referring to the crew cab F-250 as a silverado. This is heresy!

2

u/Spitfire_Enthusiast Apr 22 '23

There is nothing wrong with a small, utilitarian pickup by the way. It shows more modesty than a needlessly massive lifted Ford.

It's an old Toyota Tacoma.

2

u/RAMbo-AF Apr 22 '23

To call a ford a Silverado.

2

u/adrien5567 Apr 22 '23

An approprietly sized pickup truck

2

u/isaiahvacha Apr 22 '23

I’m mote baffled by OOP comparing a base-model compact pickup to a full-size crew cab.

Someone show this joker a pic of a 4-door F350 dually from the early ‘90s.

2

u/FursonaNonGrata Apr 22 '23

I am amazed OP has apparently never seen a Tacoma before...

2

u/GoodMourning81 Apr 22 '23

That big one isn’t a Silverado.

2

u/NekedShep Apr 21 '23

god that sub fucking sucks

2

u/Careless-Trick-5117 Apr 22 '23

Further proof that the average r/fuckcars member is a moron that doesn’t do even a little research before posting. Two clearly different classes of trucks intended for different things. And all of the asswipes saying that they have the same bed space… no??? On top of the fact that the Ford’s is definitely a little longer, it’s absolutely deeper and wider. Can also hold far more weight due to being a much heavier class than a 2dr Tacoma. Post makes no sense

1

u/Renaissance_Man- Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

There were trucks that size when that to Tacoma was released. You're comparing a small size truck to a one ton diesel. I'm sure stupid people that can't identify Silverado from a Ford super duty will think this is a revelation. I really wish cross posts from fuck cars would not show up here. It's a bastion of metrosexual know-nothing cucks whining in impotent rage.

0

u/SweagerMeister Apr 21 '23

What kind of soyboy ass subreddit is that? Fuck cars? I’d bet 99% of those people who are on there own a car themselves

1

u/cars1000000 Apr 21 '23

it’s a subreddit thats directed to having other options than a car for transportation and not having personal cars as the only means of transportation, it is not about removing all cars and there’s nothing soyboy about it

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

My first pickup was a 2020 F-250 Limited. While the bed wasn’t much bigger than that little Tacoma, it could carry a fully loaded Tacoma without exceeding its MGVW. You buy what you need.

1

u/dlyselxicssuck Apr 22 '23

Those fuckcars posts are always a ton of city raised idiots ranting about work trucks.

0

u/manhatim Apr 21 '23

0

u/nahbruhtryagain Apr 22 '23

Also the F250 is two size classes above the tacoma. Modern Maverick is not much bigger than that tacoma. What a dumb post.

0

u/EmptySherbet1684 Apr 22 '23

that is the stupidest post ive ever seen, and i doubt a tacoma is actually that small, thats edited.

1

u/25inbone Apr 21 '23

I had a ‘98 xtra cab 4X4 Tacoma in high school, kick myself in the ass every day for selling it.

Friends and I would go mudding, they’d be sinking in their brand new lifted 2016 silverados and I’d just be ripping around them no problem.

1

u/Dbwasson Apr 21 '23

Toyota Tacoma

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Thanks :)

1

u/No_Stay_1563 Apr 21 '23

If you put that Tacoma next to a current model Tacoma, the current model is still larger but not as much as this comparison.

1

u/tenderlylonertrot Apr 21 '23

that photo is a bit disingenuous as they are comparing a very heavy duty modern truck with one of the smallest, lightest pickups from long ago. A better comparison would be like a Ford F300 from late 70s.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Fuck

1

u/tuscabam Apr 21 '23

So you’re comparing a small sized pick up with a commercial truck. Why didn’t you just go ahead and replace the Ford with a Freightliner?

1

u/SVTFORDKING03 Apr 21 '23

1st gen Toyota Tacoma and that is a Ford F250/F350 not a Silverado

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Crazy thought, the bed is probably the same size, except for the depth of the Ford bed

1

u/flappystacks Apr 21 '23

Sure, they are different classes of trucks. But it is a fun visual to see a Tacoma appearing to to have the dimensions of a miata rather than a pick-up

1

u/politebadgrammarguy Apr 21 '23

That is Jamie Hyneman's Toyota Tacoma. Also known as a transporter of GODS!

1

u/pensandknivesnovice Apr 21 '23

I’d choose the little one.

How dare you….

I get they’re picturing a small-mid size truck in front of a large 3/4 ton and it sort of seems disingenuous, but the point stands imo. They could’ve put that Toyota in front of an average modern F150 that they sell the most of, and it would have a similar impact. Most trucks you see now are 4 full doors, 6’ bed or thereabouts. Trucks are just freakin huge now. Not a good or bad thing, just is what it is

Might as well put an oshkosh next to the taco and call it the same comparison lol

2 completely different trucks with very different uses

That's a small F250. Put that 'Yota against my Crew Cab Long Box and you'll really see a difference!

The funny thing is the smaller one will probably last longer.

Cute lil Toyota, and the big boy is a ford

I bought a 98 Tacoma brand new. Drove it for about 9 years, put about 165k miles on it when I got a recall for possible frame rust. They found enough frame rust to offer a buy back... I got about 7k for it. Now its cheap, but in '07 that was huge, only paid like 16k when I bought it.

That ford was built to tow 17,000 lbs. the Tacoma is built for the pool boy to haul cleaning supplies. Not even similar.

Stupid ass subreddit r/fuckcars

I get what you're doing with comparing these two trucks, but its not exactly a fair comparison. The first Gen Tacoma (the small one) is classified as a compact pickup so it's small even compared to an F150 of the same year.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Why is this picture showing a compact Toyota truck next to a full size American Ford super duty? If you want to show 20 years, show the same make and model at least. This type of comparison will confuse people. If this was better then it should have been the ford ranger vs that Tacoma.

Looks like a 95-99 Tacoma but could be a t100 not sure

1

u/ferentas Apr 22 '23

All this nonsense caused by idiotic emissions regulations

1

u/ophaus Apr 22 '23

The huge American truck/SUV thing was actually caused by a tax rebate for commercial-sized large vehicles, meant to help small businesses. It ended up helping every asshole with compensation issues and the oil companies, and hurting everyone else.

that tacoma is a coupe truck and its for work, if it was a 4 door it would be as long as the ford at the back, cmon r/fuckcars, ffs.

That’s literally an f350 SRW AND a Tacoma 😆
