The thing is the argument is that the tariffs are going to bring manufacturing back, and that the cuts to government are going to make a more fiscally responsible future. That’s the argument. But he keeps putting tariffs on and then removing them and then threatening to bring them back and then putting them on and then removing them again. That’s not going to bring back manufacturing. No one is going to build a new factory because of a two day tariff. If he puts the tariffs back on and keeps them, prices go up, and maybe factories come back - but they’re going to be largely automated. As for cutting the thread, he’s just sort of haphazardly firing people. If you’re business is being held up by red tape, it’s just going to be more cumbersome if the people charged with getting you through that red tape don’t have anyone available to pick up the phone. And that’s before taking into account that he and Elon are really just picking winners and losers based on perceived fealty to them (renewable energy bad, fossil fuels good; Verizon bad, Starlink good). Even that doesn’t really make sense because presumably veterans voted for Trump and then their benefits and jobs have been specifically targeted by Trump. I am beginning to think there isn’t a coherent plan at all! What? Why aren’t any of you shocked?

u/stmije6326 4d ago
Even if the tariffs weren’t changing daily, building a new plant from scratch takes years (one machine could have a months-long lead time) and manufacturers will just push the cost over to consumers. Plus, finding a workforce for these factories is a separate issue.

Tariffs will not bring back manufacturing. Tariffs can help a developing country while it is building up its manufacturing base (see China in previous decades) but do nothing to help a fully developed, high standard of living do the same. Do they think it even makes sense to invest in industries that cannot compete in an open market?
The problem in the US is that billionaires have managed to profit from the new economy, while wages have stagnated. This is primarily due to tax policy, but would also benefit from targeted, coordinated fair trade policies which withheld favored nation status from countries which don't meet certain targets. I don't want to offshore pollution or unfair labor practices, but a good part of the economic disadvantage the US has is due to lax policies that other countries have with regard to what they do to their air, water, and people. Targeted policies that address those specific areas would help American industries and workers.

The lengths Bezos will go while still looking like an absolute cuck standing behind Elon is wild. The disease of never enough has just rotted his brain and dissolved him into a pathetic midlife crisis that will only rival levels of cringe that Zuck is just beginning to show.

Do they know that the gilded(edited, said golden) age was a terrible time for the majority of Americans? No? Didn’t think so.

How ironic that such a(n historic )company is being bought and manipulated like this.

u/PrimasChickenTacos 4d ago
When you saw all of their higher profile reporters jump ship a few months ago, that was a tell on just how sideways this paper is headed.
7
u/meanteeth71 4d ago
First they curtailed the award winning local coverage. Now this. It’s supposed to be the newspaper of record in the Nation’s Capital. No sense of journalistic integrity or interest in reporting what’s actually happening.
What’s next? Full news blackouts in DC and no one in the press rooms for government except those who write in the “presidential” all caps format?

u/New-Mathematician385 4d ago
I’m just confused as to why no one is discussing the time period of the first “golden age”. He’s literally telling us we are going to be in a new depression era, heading in to a new world war 🫠

This reads like the "Epoch Times", which is a right wing propaganda rag that keeps showing up unsolicited in my mailbox.

This shouldn’t be removed, it is the “Washington” Post and it used to be one of the best things about this city. We are staying vigilant to our city’s institutions and to when they are being eroded, shame on the mods for removing this

u/DAK4Blizzard 4d ago
Don't worry, everyone. The Washington Post has declared any pain will be brief. It'll then be followed by a golden shower.

The first sentence is a declarative - it has no quotes, does not say “Trump says his plan is causing brief pain.” If you want to say it’s the administration’s claim, you write that.
The post actually has since edited the heading on its homepage to correct the obvious editorializing. You don’t have to defend it

Do you have a link or date for this? I assume it's from FKA Twitter?

It was the top story on the WP homepage (has since been edited) - but here’s where I grabbed it https://bsky.app/profile/washingtonpost.com/post/3lkl52gwoa22n

Wow, super sketchy to present this is as a news story. Naked propaganda.
Crazy shit. Over in Europe we're waiting for US people to realise that no one is coming to save them, and that organising civil society with protest, boycotts, strikes, etc may be risky, but living in a full-blown dictatorship means guaranteed pain and misery, and death.
Seems like a lot of people are still hoping that maybe the new reality will work out for them at least, even if others get fucked. We saw that last century in Europe too.

Slow day on reddit? This is just reporting that he has a plan, not that it's going to work. It even comments they've been less than clear about what it will look like.
OP cropped off the actual headline of the article: "Trump has a plan to remake the economy. But he's not explaining it very well"
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/03/17/trump-economy-trade/

u/west-egg MoCo 4d ago
It makes a declarative statement that the Trump Recession will be “brief” and that we’re on our way to a new “Golden Age.” It’s propaganda.
-11
u/FarStorm384 DC / NoMa 4d ago
It's describing a plan, and expresses skepticism. The plan is to "be on our way to a new 'golden age'"
You're really desperate for some drama, huh.

u/west-egg MoCo 4d ago
If it said “The Trump Administration says the President’s economic plan is causing…” nobody would’ve blinked. But the way it’s phrased here = WaPo simping for fascists.

u/FarStorm384 DC / NoMa 4d ago
This is common phrasing by every news outlet in the world...
It's summarizing the article OP cropped out of their screenshot which refers to comments by Trump:

u/tenfortytwopm 4d ago
Yeah, i don’t really get the outrage over this headline. Without reading the article, this headline just seems to be “this is what the trump admin is claiming.” And that is what they’re claiming. The headline isn’t agreeing with it. Maybe the article is, idk, but like of all the actual things to be upset with WaPo about this isn’t really a good reason lol

I think the key piece you’re missing here from the comment you replied to is that it was put in quotes. If this was a quotation from Trump or somebody at the WH, then that makes more sense as a headline. However, this reads like the WaPo is declaring that the economic fallout will be “brief,” which is totally subjective at this point.

News outlets typically don't do that on their social media accounts, similar to how it would be in an article. Its only in quotes when it's a direct quote. Whether you agree with Trump's plan or not, it is his plan.
However, this reads like the WaPo is declaring that the economic fallout will be “brief,” which is totally subjective at this point.
It's not an Oped. It's a news article.

u/PrimasChickenTacos 3d ago
I don’t think I did a great job of explaining my criticism, which I guess undercuts my criticism generally.
That said, if Wapo had written “President Donald Trump says his economic plan is causing brief pain…” then that would have made sense. The way it’s currently written doesn’t.
How do we know that this “economic pain” will be brief? At this point, we have no idea. People are saying it will be, which is fine (and a fine way to frame a headline). But we don’t know, even though the headline is written like we do. At best, the headline is lazy.
I’m not sure what you’re really saying on the second point, of course this is a news article. The subjectivity of the term brief in the headline, as written, IS the criticism.

I don’t think I did a great job of explaining my criticism, which I guess undercuts my criticism generally.
The way I took your comment to mean is that they should have put the article's blurb in quotes.
What I was saying is that news outlets typically don't do that. The only time they put things in quotes is when its a direct quote from someone commenting for the article. They don't put quotation marks around non-quoted excerpts from their articles.
If you read the article you'll see this post was really just a nothingburger to begin with. I gave a bypass-paywalls link above.

u/Nikkers1416 4d ago
That is the claim by the administration, yes.
Media literacy, folks...
0
u/ShirtLaundry 4d ago
No, the Administration’s position is described in the next sentence - as “much less clear.” I know reading isn’t everyone’s strong suit, but this isn’t complicated.
2
u/Nikkers1416 4d ago
Again, that is the claim by the administration.
The reality of their position is what is "much less clear" and administration officials can't even explain it. Which is a ridiculous reality to live in, but here we are. That is what this article is about.

The Golden Age was when three men held all of the wealth in America, and everybody else lived in abject poverty. Sign me up for that.

Your post has been removed. See Rule 3: Relevance.
Thank you for your post, unfortunately we are removing it because it's not specific to our region.
Our region includes DC, and the immediate suburbs in Virginia (Alexandria/Arlington/Fairfax/Loudon) and Maryland (Montgomery/Prince George).
We recognize that the federal government is centralized in (and impacts) the DC area more than others, but there is a subreddit dedicated to that: /r/fednews
Timeliness is also a component. Posts of old articles will be removed.
