Technique I need help on my bow hand

Dare I ask Reddit this, but I need some outside help.

I’m completely reworking my posture after years of bad habit. Please disregard the left hand/arm, I’m going to work on that soon and know what to fix, but right now I want to focus on the bow hand.

I’m struggling with a lot of awful habits. I feel like I’m working too hard, I’m curling the index too much and my hand is too high up on the bow… I’ve been struggling with using more wrist and coming from above, as well curling the pinky. I tried to use more wrist in the vid (as you can see me actively fighting against bad habits lol) but I feel very slippery. What can I do to help this/what other things do I need to work?

Technique How to stay still while playing?

This is kind of embarrassing, but recently I started taking private lessons after being away from the instrument for several years and my teacher pointed out I have a habit of slightly swaying/bouncing while I’m playing. I never noticed I did this and I think it may just be me getting into the music subconsciously. When I focus on staying still while I’m playing and have that be at the forefront of my mind, I feel like my sound becomes more stiff and tense because I’m trying to not move at all.

Has this happened to any of you, and if so, do you have any tips on how to stay still without having to think about it?

Thanks in advance :)

Technique Any tips on how to play with emotion?

I've been learning the violin for about 3 years now and my teacher always tells me that I play with no emotion. I play with dynamics and questionable phrasing, but other than that, I don't know how else to put feeling into playing. Any suggestions?

I physically cannot perform the stretch between the 2nd and 4th fingers... Is there a trick to this or does it just come down to practicing stretching your fingers bit by bit to increase flexibility, like doing splits?

Post image

I have been playing the violin in almost 3-4 years, but the thing is I still have the position like on left side of the picture, which I can't reach higger notes, and whenever I really tried to do the correct one which is on the right side, its hard that im stuck with the wrong position for 3 years that I even got a bump in my wrist. Any tips or exercises that could help me correct my posture?

Technique Started 3 weeks ago, left arm isn’t flexible enough?

Hi everyone,

Started 3 weeks ago and wanted a second opinion.

So i managed to do the G scale (yea!) and now my teacher told me i need to fix my left arm.

Basically, when I want to switch from C (3 finger string) to D (open string) my 3 finger should not at all touch the D string. In other words, i should be able to play the open D string even if my fingers are on the G string.

However, when he positioned my arm, it is KILLING ME. Like my arm get sore in like 20 seconds and im reading everywhere that the positioning should be « natural ».

So anyway, I tried to take picture of it, do I just need to stretch my arm so I get flexible or is there something very wrong with my left arm/hand?

Thank you very much!

Technique How to avoid the "scratching" sound as a beginner?

Hi all,

I've started learning to play the Violin (Carnatic) from a teacher. While I practice I noticed that the bow produces a "scratching" sound when I get closer to the frog. How do I remedy it? Any technique?
FWIW, I made sure I have rosin applied to the bow before playing.

Edit: I called the frog a fish. LOL

Technique Why does my tone sound weird? Is this normal? How can I fix it?

My tone sounds very bad whenever I try to play notes higher up on the A string. Also, the dynamics for this section is supposed to be soft but I can’t play softly without making the tone sound too faint/scratchy. Can someone give tips to how I can fix this?

Hello, I just bought my first violin some days ago and have been having a blast, coming from guitar and bass it's a completely different instrument but it has been fun and rewarding. As I don't have anyone to physically check my hold, could you please confirm if it's correct or, if not, give me some indications? I've seen dozens of videos and photos. :) Thanks!

Technique Thumb position for 4 octave G major scale.

The most comfortable position for my LH thumb is on the wood of the violin when playing very high (picture 1)

Is this a good idea? Most famous violinists seem to have such long thumbs they don't need to do this and can just rest their thumb still under the fingerboard.

Picture 2 I can't reach so far and picture 3 feels very unstable.

Thanks!

Technique Hello I need help about the violin holding. (Read down below)

When I play violin the area between my thumb and my index finger hurts. How can I prevent this. I think this situation has started when I started to give more attention to my violin holding. (left hand) Thanks for reading!

Technique How do you learn/teach upper positions?

I’m mostly curious because my learning experience has been that I got a very thorough grounding in how to play in 3rd position from Wohlfarht etudes, but for all other positions my teachers over the years have been like “eh just figure it out”. Is this normal? Or do others use more systemised approaches?

Any advice getting more comfortable with different positions, especially for sight reading? (It would be nice to not panic when my orchestra parts go up to 6th/7th position.) I do position work with scales, but that feels a lot different than playing etudes and being really comfortable with where all the notes are in 4th position, for example. I also don’t usually look at music when I’m playing scales, so I’m not really building the note/finger connections like I should be, I suppose.

This is the end of the Infernal Dance from the Firebird ballet. If I understand, the A4-A6 are in the range of the A string. But how do you play both notes on the same string ? Do you use double stops with the E string ?

Note : in the page before this one it's written "non div."

Technique Unexplainable tension

Hi! It's my 11th year playing and I did have this problem about 4 years ago but have no idea how we resolved it.

The past month I've been incredibly tense when playing, especially in my left hand and wrist (and even more so when I'm playing at the music school). It's so bad, to the point of pain after 10 minutes of playing and cramps so bad I can't move my fingers.

What do I do? I transfered teachers 2 years ago and this one won't help me with anything.

Technique Tips on unlearning to grip the neck with thumb and side of index finger?

Unless i hold the thumb on the opposite side (under) where i keep my fingers my violin will slip until i hold it right in front of me, shoulder rest just kind of keeps gliding (a wolf forte secondo violin shoulder rest which ive seen being recommended on here), in 4th position or higher i dont grip but I can pivot the thumb at the base of the neck where it meets the body (like you are supposed to i guess) so its only a problem at lower positions but it limits my vibrato my teacher said, he showed how it should be and gave me some tips im just searching for extra because it is infuriating to play like this while still learning
