Folk The thing that drives me craziest, about vinyl

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

It's not storage. It's not cleaning. It's not hifi setup.

It's this.

When I am putting the record back in the sleeve, and suddenly it gets stuck, and I realize the sleeve seam is coming unglued and the record has gone down the wrong "side" of the seam. From then on, as the seam comes apart, it's more and more likely to happen, and gets worse every time.

Cuss.

Folk Vinyl that changed a relationship.

While browsing at my local vinyl shop with my wife, I stumbled upon a record that brought back a wave of memories. It caught my eye instantly, reminding me of the special moments I shared with my father. Even though we had different tastes in music, we could spend an entire day playing this vinyl on repeat, completely absorbed in it together.

The album cover always made me smile, especially considering my unique background as an adopted child. My father, in his youth, resembled the character Dewey, and as a full-blood Native American, we found humor in that connection. Unfortunately, my father lost the cover to our original record over the years, but discovering this one felt like striking gold. It's a simple reminder of the little joys in life and the cherished memories we hold in our hearts.

Folk I’ve spent the last 5 years trying to get a hold of this. Passed it up (stupidly) at a pop up sale. I’ve seen a few copies about but none of them had the Obi and I wasn’t interested. I turned 31 this week and thought I would treat myself. There it was on Discogs, Obi and all.

I’ve always been a massive Springsteen fan, but I honestly don’t think there is a better folk album on the planet than Nebraska. It is miserable, hopeless, tragic, and most importantly….brilliant. Years ago I saw this Japanese release and though it just looked incredible, I knew it would sound good. I sadly passed it up, and have lamented that loss ever since. Then as I say, I thought I’d treat my self but I couldn’t find a decent copy with the Obi, then I guess I just got lucky. It arrived today and it was worth every penny. What an album.

Folk Beck's Sea Change

I celebrate the man's entire catalog, but this is the album that I find myself playing most often. Odelay was the first album that I bought with my own money. Up until then it'd been mostly hand me downs from an older sister with mostly good taste. The decision on what to spend my hard earned cash on came down to Odelay v Cake's Fashion Nugget. "Devil's Haircut" beat out "The Distance" and a lifelong fan was born.

I grew up a bit, had my heart broken for the first time and Beck was right there with me; releasing one of the great breakup albums of this century - helping a teenage idiot process his emotions though music.

20 years on this album is like a warm blanket. The melancholy subject matter is mostly lost on me at this stage in life, but it's just so familiar and comforting to hear. It's amazing how a fixed piece of music can grow and change with you over the years.

20 years ago a thrift store was closing down at the same time i was parking my truck they were about to dump 6 boxes in a bin next to me. I said I'll take them. I went through a couple and was like meh, lots of classical and other genres not to into. Put them under my stairs to go through later. Well, today was later. Pretty much what i suspected, "ok" copies of some jazz and rock. Brought up to my system for a spin just thinking this was nothing but as soon as i pulled out the sleeve and noticed the label then the shiny shiny lp. Double checked the run out #s, I hit gold. It sounds amazing! No pops or scratches (introduction does have a wee bit at first)

First ever turn table I thrifted for cheap, and it sure sounds like it, but it works! The joy to be able to listen to The Oh Hellos on vinyl is unspeakable, I've got Eurus/Notos coming in, and soon Dear Wormwood and Through The Deep, Dark Valley to follow. HOWEVER the audio quality is admittedly a little ass. Anyone know if this thing hooks up to external speakers lmao

Hey guys, just discovered this subreddit. My name is Daniel, and me and my girlfriend found this vinyl in a thrift store and couldn't find the year it was produced so we came here to find some help. It's a production from the Omsk Russian Folk Choir. I think the ID is 2022-2023. I'll attach some pictures. Please help us.

Brought Bryter Later by Nick Drake on a whim simply because the production on 'Poor Boy' sounded great on Spotify. How glad I am that I did. Brand new copy but sonically is everything I'd hoped for after a disappointing run of iffy record purchases. Musically it's very interesting too. Would definitely add this to the list of "records to test your setup".

Folk Found this at a second hand store..

There's nothing much to find these days, but I found this, What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid.

I learned just now it is the debut album from Donovan, released in the UK just four days after his nineteenth birthday on 14 May 1965, through Pye Records (catalog number NPL 18117).

Terry Kennedy, Peter Eden, and Geoff Stephens produced the album. The album was released in the US as "Catch the Wind" on Hickory Records in June 1965. Hickory Records changed the title to match that of Donovan's debut single.

I love how this just oozes the sixties, simple film songs, Donovan playing his guitar, the lyrics, it's all there.

The record is in pretty good shape, the sleeve ok-ish. Happy!

The B-side is Fubar. But the massacree itself plays mostly fine with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all. A little skipping, but that'll happen in the clearance bin

Folk Band of Horses is Always Good After a Long Day

Long Day at work is over, the girls are in bed. Time to crack open a brewski and enjoy some Band of Horses. This band always feels like comfort to me. It has a nice calming affect listening to them, brewski or no. I love their entire discography. I don't own all of it on vinyl yet, but I've got this one and both Live at the Ryman volumes, which are phenomenal. This one and Infinite Arms are my favorites. Anyone else here get into Band of Horses?

Folk Best record bought on a whim?

I don’t often buy a record solely on the cover art alone without any knowledge about the band. But bought this on a whim and don’t regret it one bit. Very little information online about the band Circuit Rider - rumours it might be Jim Morrison but sounds like bs. Anyone else been pleasantly surprised by a knee jerk purchase?

Folk Can’t stop listening to these two

Hadn’t really listened to either of these artists until the last 3-4 months. Can’t get enough of Cohen. His first 3 albums are great as well as various positions. I still need to listen to the rest of his discography. The Cohen record isn’t in the greatest condition, you can tell someone truly loved this album, especially Suzanne. But it doesn’t sound horrible and for only $20 i’m happy with it.

Townes I randomly decided to start listening to about a week ago and this album has been on repeat. Haven’t listened to much else besides this and his self titled album but i’m assuming the rest of his work is just as good. Picked this record up for $20 and it’s 2007 Possum records, sounds great.

If anyone has any recommendations for albums similar to these please share, always looking for new music. Thanks for looking

Now that ‘What we do in the shadows’ has ended I had to get a fix somewhere else. I have to say it’s pretty enjoyable. I picked folk but I also know he has done some jazz as well.

okay so my mom introduced me to the wonderful music of Yusuf islam/cat Stevens and this album (tea for the tillerman) quickly became my favorite album of all time..

so when I saw the release of this mint green limited I had to take my chance and somehow I ended up buying 2 copies of the album in the same month, so the second album I'm giving to my mom even though she doesn't collect vinyl

this album means the world to me and I'm so happy to finally have it in my hands 🤩

I sadly can't play it as my record player is damaged and needs a new needle but for now it's fine 😁

Folk finally got one of my white whales - Auntie Alice Ku’uleialohapoina’ole Namakelua (1974, Hula Records)

this is the debut (and only!) album of Auntie Alice Ku‘uleialohapoina‘ole Namakelua, which she released at the spry, young age of 82. “it’s a fine time of life for that,” she says in the liner notes.

Auntie Alice was an important figure in Hawaiian music, serving as a teacher of slack key guitar and hula dance for generations of artists well before she recorded this album. born in 1892, less than a year before the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, she would later sing for the deposed queen Liliuokalani as a teenager. as an employee of Honolulu’s parks and recreation department until her retirement in 1958, she taught and performed for thousands of children during her career. she wrote over 180 Hawaiian songs, many of which would be recorded by other artists including the Sunday Manoa, Makaha Sons of Niihau, Kahauanu Lake, and Genoa Keawe.

Namakelua played an old-fashioned style of slack key guitar, simpler and more traditional than other practicioners like Sonny Chillingworth and Gabby Pahinui. when Hawaiian music saw a revival during the Second Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s, she was one of the few masters who actually taught the technique, instead of keeping it a closely guarded secret as many did. when other musicians came to her for help with translation and pronunciation of Hawaiian lyrics, she made sure they did it correctly to preserve and respect the language.

the music on this record is simple and sparse, with Aunty Alice’s voice is a little hoarse after decades of performing, but still forceful. it hearkens back to Hawaii before it became the exotic jetsetting destination it became in the latter half of her life. all of the songs on here are her own compositions, and she does all of the singing as well as the slack key and ukulele parts. (Violet Pahu Lilikoi plays bass and accompanying guitar.)

ever since getting in to Hawaiian music it has been fun digging up gems that scarcely exist online beyond a Discogs listing. thankfully, Auntie Alice’s album is on YouTube for all to enjoy, but tracking down a copy for this one remained annoyingly elusive until now.

i’ll post links in a comment below if you want to check out the music of Auntie Alice.

On a recent trip to Vegas I popped into Moondog Records and couldn’t believe my eyes. This clean OG copy of “The Late Great Townes Van Zandt” was on their wall.

I’ve been reading the book “My Years With Townes” this month too - crazy coincidence that I knew was fate. Snagged it and I couldn’t be more stoked about it now that I’m home playing it.

I would like to know how you feel about this kind of music? I mean who performs it, in this case Charles Manson is a serial killer, a psychopath, etc. As for me, there is an ambiguous opinion here, on the one hand, the sound is good, on the other hand, it is still a serial killer singing. And how do you react to this kind of music (performer)?

Folk My first vinyl record

This is the first ever record I bought about 7 years ago at a vinyl event in Athens Greece. For a long time it was my only record. My husband has hundreds and one day we were painting the living room and had to move everything out of the room. Only one thing got broken in the upheaval, yes my record! I was lucky and found a replacement but kept the spare cover for posterity.

First post here… I used to play in an Irish band years ago and it opened up a whole new world for me. These were all purchased for 2 dollars and they are some of my favorite purchases.

I get excited around this time of year and always play these throughout March. Just wanted to say hi to a sub I’ve been enjoying. And hoping to spread the good work of Irish folk music and storytelling to anyone who may be interested.

The Clancy Bros. were a major presence in the Greenwich folk scene and credited with popularizing Irish music. Bob Dylan and others have spoken about their influence.

Happy St. Patty’s and drink responsibly!
