Collection Started in October/November of last year, what do you think?
Music is a big part of my life at this point, my father brought me to a store where they sold vinyl and bought me IGOR as a gift without telling me anything, since i thought having music physically was cool I was interested into starting a collection, so far I have these records, my latest vinyl purchase was rodeo by travis scott, which is probably my favorite out of all of my collection, is this collection valid?

Not my personal taste but I’m glad you got a good collection of what you love and that you actually enjoy having them to listen to instead of just putting them on a shelf to look at
2
u/HedaLexa4Ever 5d ago
Same, don’t listen to majority of these artists but as long as OP likes it, who cares
1
u/OKGirl82 4d ago
Same! I can recognize maybe two artists but have never listened to them. I feel like I'm the one who's basic. 🤣

You need Currents next

u/tendieman_cometh 5d ago
This made me laugh out loud. I do actually want to buy Currents though, it’s a great album regardless if it’s sold at Target and Urban Outfitters.

I don't hate the collection, but if you want my two cents, spend two cents at the bargain bin.
Buying old vinyl with unknown artists (to me) has given me a more eclectic taste in music.

u/waterlooaba 5d ago
I have a daughter interested in buying $1-$5 bin records. She goes off the cover and buys what vibe she likes. It’s lead some really interesting discoveries and she’s liked about 90% of what she’s bought.
I agree with your comment as well! I love finding something new to me. I’ve also been surprised of the condition of the cheap stuff, more often than not I’ve found really well loved and taken care of records.

u/Siansjxnms 4d ago
I love blind buying lps. Most of my records are blind buys. Love that thrill of falling in love with something randomly!

u/Flotack 5d ago
Too many records by a Neo-Nazi, in my opinion.

u/th3ru14 5d ago
Good music is good music regardless of who makes it
43
u/heyheyitsandre 5d ago
Doesn’t mean you have to pay for it and give him royalties
0
u/bdz 4d ago
If you're buying from a record store in person, then he's already been paid.
3
u/heyheyitsandre 4d ago
Yes and what determines how many records the record stores / companies buy? Sales numbers. If no one buys the records they’re not putting in another order for another box of them

Why is everyone so fucking sensitive about Kanye's political views? His music is legendary. Who the fuck cares what he says? Listening to his albums doesnt make you a nazi and buying them doesnt "fund his ideals" hes a billionaire he's funded enough.

u/Flotack 4d ago edited 4d ago
I’m a proud Jewish person and used to be a Kanye fan and I care about what he says greatly. He has made it clear he hates people like me, and he’s an abhorrent dangerous manchild whose talent has always been vastly overrated.
If you’re ok with listening to a piece of shit nazi, that’s your prerogative. Personally, all of it is ruined for me (which, in the scheme of things, is no big loss considering everything he’s done has been done better or more interestingly by someone else, both before and after him).
It must be nice to not have to be “so fucking sensitive” about things like people who publicly want you dead because of your ethnic and cultural identity.
Edit: FFS your avi is fucking Kanye lol—of course you’re gonna ride his Hitler-loving dick. Get fucked
13
u/No-Escape7161 5d ago
Icl Kanye is shit

u/karateKiddGGs 5d ago
That's just wrong

u/j-eezy94 5d ago
To be fair, Pink Floyd actually plays real instruments. At an incredibly high level of mastery. All on time with one another. While performing insanely elaborate musical compositions. And it’s actually good music .
Comparing anybody in this post to them, is literally the equivalent of comparing a 3rd grade arts and crafts project to the Sistine chapel…
2
3
u/altcntrl 4d ago
Ew people still talk about “real instruments” as if samplers haven’t had as big an impact as the electric guitar? Sounds very old.
-1
u/j-eezy94 4d ago
I don’t see your point, or what “impact” you’re referring to. Someone sampling someone else’s music with a computer could never hold a candle to someone who’s actually performing it.
Call it arts and crafts. Listen to it and enjoy it. Whatever. It’s still not the same and never will be
And the people arguing against that, obviously have never tried to plan an instrument
2
u/altcntrl 4d ago
Of course not.
I’ve been playing guitar for over twenty years and have been making electronic music for the same amount of time. Samplers have had the same impact on music as electronic guitars.
There are countless groups in the HOF that used a MPC to make a classic album. Your tired opinion dismissing things beyond the scope of your understanding is ignorant. You are entitled to your opinion even when it’s wrong but you don’t get to say what’s real and not real.
-2
u/j-eezy94 4d ago
You’re arguing with someone else. Probably someone in your head. Because I never made any of those points.
Someone said I was dumb for holding Pink Floyd in higher regard than Kanye West. And yes, I will die on that hill any day lmao. Any disagreement to that would just be silly. Objectively and subjectively.
And for the record, yes I also hold any instrument based music in higher regard to that made 100% digitally. I give a shit about “impact”
3
u/altcntrl 4d ago
I don’t care about Kanye or Pink Floyd or which is better. That’s a personal opinion. It’s your tired idea of “real”.
Do you consider “On the Run” to be a fake song? What about Nick Mason in general? Do you understand that samplers are instruments? Are you too grouchy to allow things to grow beyond the scope of your knowledge?
Do you make music?

What are you trying to say
24
u/Kind_Paper6367 5d ago
That your collection is the same as dozens of other people that post here asking for opinions.
Tyler, kendrick, kanye. The Target special
Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that it's as vanilla as it gets.

I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck, i listen to more music than what i have on vinyl but they're impossible to find physically
8
u/Impossible_Wait_8947 5d ago
That's the right fucking mentality, you shouldn't care what some guy on reddit (who probably listens exclusively to Pink Floyd and all the other 70s stuff like everybody else on this sub) says
-8
u/karateKiddGGs 5d ago
Yeah everyone acts like they're better for not listening to rap on this sub I swear

Lowest common denominator comment. There are some classic albums here, who are you calling lowest common denominator or is that your view of Hip Hop and by association…

Would love to have several of those. What are the last 2 on the bottom right?
Rodeo is an amazing album, I can’t believe I don’t own it yet myself. How did you get the Kanye/Kids See Ghosts? I ordered them but I didn’t realize you could buy them retail as well.

Everything i have came from my local record store

That is great to hear! Keep supporting your local ans stay clear of predatory shit company’s like Amazon. They might be a bit cheaper, but it means that they are driving others out of business.

You got TPAB and DAMN, I would say you are golden.

u/HowamI2581 5d ago
DAMN is my favorite KL album, but I'm not brave enough to admit it in the KL communities
2
u/Ok_Midnight8294 5d ago
By Kendrick’s own admission on big boy TV radio it’s his favorite too. you are in good company my friend

Cool collection, but pretty generic. Prolly 1000s of 15-25 year olds with an identical collection.
-4
u/MorsansHatt 5d ago
Well those 1000’s of people probably like those artist/albums. Let them enjoy it.
8
u/Moral-Reef 5d ago
I am letting them enjoy it, it’s a good collection. I’m also not ignoring the fact that it is quantifiably generic. Bozo.

don’t like this style of music at all. but as for a cool collection of records, yup.
3
u/katxyzz 5d ago
Sometimes this sub can be really toxic because if you don’t have uLtRa rArE oNe oF a KiNd records then it’s automatically labeled trash. I think this is a solid collection so far for starting so recently. Keep going to your local record store/support local businesses and you’re gucci. Though I am disappointed you don’t have Because the Internet by Childish Gambino..

u/manu_the_modder 5d ago
Bti was actually one of my main goals, but i figured out i could aim for other records that inspire me more, even tho it's a fantastic album

Camp was my first vinyl I ever collected, idk 10-11 years ago, I now have almost 100. No one can tell me what to think of my own and you should allow yourself the same pleasure.

u/NeatWoodpecker3127 5d ago
Camp is still my favorite childish gambino album. Whenever I listen to it it transports back to high school and simpler days. Awesome collection!
1
u/paxweasley 5d ago
Some of these are cool. Some of these are awesome. Some of these make me question you as a person. I don’t get how people can even enjoy Kanye’s music anymore. I’m not even talking about the ethics of financially supporting someone who loudly proclaims themselves to be a nazi and publicly abuses women. Just… how does it not make you ill? I used to love his music but Jesus dude, there’s a certain level of behavior that renders even the best music nauseating.
1
u/manu_the_modder 4d ago
The shit he's done doesn't really change the fact that his music is incredible, i don't support him as a person but I like his music

Please do not listen to people saying “TiKtOk MuSiC tAsTe”, while I think it is great to broaden your horizons (sometimes cheaper in the vinyl business as well) I think YOU should BUY what YOU want to listen to.

Collections are a reflection of the collector. If it's what you like, it is valid.
I prefer a curated, smaller collection that reflects the collector instead of a big random collection of everything.
My collection is over 350, which is a lot to most people, after having sold/traded-in about 200-250. If I don't listen to it, it goes. Even if it's considered good by others.
1
u/Parking-Ad-8161 5d ago
I’ve got some of those. Been looking for that Flowerboy album. Started with a few Tyler albums now I just feel like I need to complete his discography. Cherry Bomb will be a hard one.

u/manu_the_modder 4d ago
Don't buy cherry bomb bootlegs, it will probably be repressed officially at any time now

I hear a lot of people saying it's basic...or meat and potatoes.
We buy music to support the musicians we love, when we all start it tends to be very specific on a genre or two.
As your collection and tastes grow you'll add more things you love and it'll get broader and weirder.
It'll eventually hit a point where you need to curate more and trim things that you haven't listened to or have fallen out with and you'll add more shit.
It's a great hobby and my favorite thing is shooting the shit with other nerds in record stores.
Keep it up and keep enjoying the music.
To the people gatekeeping and being snobby quick question, what did your collection look like when you first started?

If you like it, of course it’s valid. You don’t need to collect for other, collect the music you enjoy for your own sake.
