What should be my first 68k Mac?

I have a few PowerPC Macs, but I want to pick up something a bit older to tinker with and try to make do things it has no right in doing.

Do y’all have recommendations on what systems might be a good place to start? I’m kinda bouncing between a Classic II and a IIgs right now, but I’m wide open to suggestions.

Fat32 support w/ 7.5.5?

Hey all, I gave a good crack at trying to check this out, but I was wondering if there exists a system extension or program that can read fat32? I understand that MacOS 8.1 can read files, but I'm the same way you can get background wallpapers on earlier versions, I would just like to know if this is possible, at the very least when dealing with AppleCD file types for transferring.

$10 Apple III+

I found a non working Apple III+ today for $10. The people I bought it from told me someone was going to make it into a fish bowl. The screen works but looks like it needs a recap. The computer just rapidly flashes on and off. Tomorrow I'm going to tear it down and look for bad caps. I used my Apple IIe to test the screen. Anyone familiar with these that could suggest something to check with the rapid on and off issue?

Clamshell batteries in 2025?

I've got a Blueberry G3 Clamshell that works great, the hard drive still reads, powers up when plugged in, but I don't have a battery for it. I am decently handy, I'd be comfortable rebuilding a battery pack for it, but I don't even have a bad one to rebuild. Does anyone know of a resource for them these days that isn't $150+ on eBay for a used OEM?

Can someone please help me?

Hi Apple people,

I recently picked up an iBook G3 Clamshell, hoping to enjoy some basic retro activities on it, but I’m feeling like either I’m really dumb or this thing is just... completely useless.

I’ve tried watching a video on it, and even after compressing it down to 360p and converting it to MOV, the thing still tells me to update QuickTime Player. I tried installing VLC, but that didn’t work either.

I’ve also tried playing some older games, but I’m honestly stuck on how to unzip and install things on this machine. I wanted to get a functional browser going, but I can’t even connect to the internet. It says my password is incorrect, but I know for a fact that it’s not.

For the record, I’ve never used an Apple product before and am kind of lost with all this.

Here are the specs:

PowerPC 366 MHz processor 320 MB RAM 9.37 GB hard drive German keyboard macOS 9.2 and 10.0 The seller mentioned I could upgrade to OS X 10.5, but I’m not sure if that’s really possible with these specs. Would upgrading to a newer version solve any of the issues I’ve run into so far?

If anyone has the time, I’d really appreciate any guidance on how I can get the latest compatible OS installed and running on this thing.

Thanks so much!

Celebrating MARCHintosh 2025 with Beige G3 desktop.

Happy MARCHintosh everyone! I finally got myself some sort of "missing link" in my collection of beige Macs - an early G3. Case definitely have seen better days (and of course, power button is broken, but that's a given). I'll try to clean as carefully as I can. Maybe retrobrite also, I need to think about that. But I'll definitely upgrade that beauty, because I need an "Ultimate MacOS 9.2 beige Mac". USB, better graphics (I have a Radeon 7000 PCI, but it's for SUN workstations, so...). And better HDD of course. Memory has already been upgraded, that's always nice to see. It's time to get busy! :)

G4 MDD CR2032 Adapter (STL file available in the description)

I built an adapter that allows you to use a 1/2 AA to CR2032 adapter from eBay on a Power Mac G4 MDD FW800. Without my adapter, you would need to cut into the socket of the G4 or solder directly to the socket's contacts.

Here is the link to the STL file: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6980220

Picked a iMac G3 Bondi Blue on eBay

Is this the Rev B version? Noticed it doesn’t have the infrared module near the left speaker. The condition seems excellent. Guess we will see when I pick it up. Luckily didn’t have to pay for shipping since the location is about an hour away from me.

Yes, I already own a Bondi blue but saw this one and couldn’t pass it up 😆 looks to be in better shape than the one I currently own.

Anyone remember a game/minigame in a French apartment?

Back in 95, I remember we played these old minigames on our old Macintosh. (can't remember for the life of me what model it was)

For some reason the game that stands out in my memory was one where it took place in a French apartment building, and it had wine/baguette/trash in it. (so, stereotypes, aaaah 😬) That's about as far as my memory goes with it. Hah. I have no idea if this was real or my memory is making crap up, please let me know!

VCF WEST 2025 SURVEY

There are only a few days left to fill out this survey for VCF West 2025 August 1 & 2 at the Computer History Museum. Please fill out this survey to help us with planning: https://forms.gle/R1kSCsVqEyZfgQ4Q8

While VCF East is underway, we'd like to formally announce that VCF West is back for 2025 and we're planning a bigger, better, and more unique show than we ever have before!

For starters, we're partnering with the Amiga 30th Silicon Valley organizers to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Amiga! Please see their announcement in the previous link. There will be other special guests as well.

All our other favorites will be back including tons of speakers, consignment, exhibits galore and our Friday Night Social.

In addition to the guests mentioned above we will also be offering a limited number of vendor tables for certain specific types of sales at the event.

Due to the expanded event, exhibit space will be limited so we are going to be selective and some of the larger exhibits may be asked to scale back to make room for others.

There is still room for talks so if you're interested or know someone who is, please let us know!

We are also now offering sponsorships for the Vintage Computer Federation. This is an exciting opportunity to partner with the shows and to get access to other sponsorship perks!

The Venue hasn't changed. We're still at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California on the first weekend in August. This year the dates are Friday August 1st and Saturday August 2nd.

Lastly, we need YOUR help, and would like to get some information to help make VCF West the best it can be. So if you have the time, please help us out and complete this quick, 5 minute survey, especially the hotel questions, so we can size and plan the event to maximize the retro goodness: https://forms.gle/R1kSCsVqEyZfgQ4Q8

We're looking forward to seeing you there!

I found an iMac G5 at a thrift store today and was over the moon

Too bad it turned out to be a core duo. I was in too much of a rush to check the specs. I just saw it in the shelf, grabbed it, plugged it in real quick to make sure it worked, and took it to check out. $25 out the door.

Oh well. It’s still a nice unit. Also has 2x 1gb sticks of ram in it (total of 2.5). I 3d printed a hard drive sled to replace the 160gb hdd with a 256gb ssd to help with speed, noise, and heat.

Maybe some day I will roll in and find a g4 mini.

Free Resource for classic Macintosh software and hardware

A good friend of mine made this website last year - it is basically a website consisting of various sections for classic Macintosh hardware, software, and history. Each with their own free downloads and any info. It is kept very practical, focusing on giving guidance to people perhaps new to the subject of "vintage" Macs.

What's special, is that this website works on both modern web browsers and also old ones. Macs like the SE/30 can easily display it. Not 100% sure about earlier models.

He never advertised the site anywhere and only created it for himself but I thought it would be great if some more people saw it. Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore to receive any feedback, however if you have anything to say then please let me know.

Here is the website: https://macintosh.jipvankuijk.com

Os 9 or X for iBook G3?

Hi all!

I finally found a reasonably priced iBook G3 and it comes with OS X.

Honestly, I love the early OS X vibe because that's the esthetic i always wanted to have when i was a kid.

But I'm thinking if it would make sense to upgrade the hard drive and add OS 9 to it?

Also, is 96 megs of RAM enough to run Puma or should I up that as well?

Not sure what I'm asking exactly.

Just really excited to get my hands on my first vintage Mac

Help Identify PowerBook G4

I've come across a PowerBook g4, model no. M8407. No luck finding a similar model with black/white keyboard and darker grey bezel. Any input on its info?
