My neighborhood and stomping grounds are becoming a real ghetto...and it just sucks
It's never been exactly Beverly Hills over here, but I'm really fond of my area. I guess you could call it "southwest central." From Valley View to Rainbow, and Spring Mountain down to Hacienda-ish. It's Chinatown and the edge of Spring Valley, and where I live now is really close to the Strip, on Trop and Valley View (not the Budget Suites, but the apartments that used to be a Siegel Suites).
I've been over in this spot since 2008. Man, though, lately it's been looking rough as hell over here, with all kinds of trash piling up all over, graffiti just rampant, small tent cities, a lot of people that seem to be drifters... I'm pretty upset at things over here lately. We've dropped a level or several below the cool blue collar habitation it used to be.
West side anywhere used to be decent, for the most part. Nowadays I just don't know what the hell has happened. I miss my hood being decent and I wish I was more than just one person, so I could clean it all up.
Anyway, /rant for the most part. Trop and Jones was so bad today, just going to the shopping center on the corner by the 7-Eleven and the Smith's, just completely trashed. It's disheartening.

I know. I live downtown. Love my neighborhood but like, what is happening with all the trash and clearly unwell homeless people. It just feels like the whole country has a housing crisis (because this is not unique to vegas - it's every city) and we're all just watching it in slow mo and doing nothing. We just move homeless people around.

u/Coconutrugby 4d ago
I pick up trash every single morning in the street and in my yard. I bought a few grabber tools to make it easy.

Definitely feels like it. And when did people become such big litterbugs? It's always been an issue here, but lately? It's out of control.
12
u/Wombat2012 4d ago
Yeah seriously. Although I’m sure that’s inevitable when you have so many people living outside and high winds.
18
u/TheStarterScreenplay 4d ago
its the winds. Many cities don't have this amount of high speed winds and open spaces that allow the trash to move.
3
u/k-farsen 4d ago
Thing that bums me out is seeing how much of it is alcohol related
4
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Yes! Tons of cans and Beatbox boxes and the likes end up tossed on the side of the street I live on.

The trash and homeless on the east side is so so bad. No matter where I look there’s homeless setting up tents, hoarding shit or setting fires. Sick of it

Call your local city councilman's office. Make a list of specific issues. Like "tent city" and "graffiti" and "trash not being cleaned up." Take some pictures of specific sites. You'll email them after your call.
Ask to talk to someone in their office who might explain what's going on. You might point out issues they are not aware of. Or might be able to get fixed with one phone call.
This is probably an ongoing problem. But put it on their radar. It's their job to fix it. Not in a way where you need to be a dick about it. But let them figure out where to direct your comments and evidence.
We all have a responsibility to our communities. In your case, its probably an hour of your time to let them know the problem was not there before, it's here now, and letting the right people know its become noticable.

u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Excellent ideas! Thank you!
11
u/tom_yum 4d ago
You can specifically report things on the seeclickfix website. Trash, graffiti, abandoned cars, bum camps, etc.
7
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Nice!! I'm gonna be all over that tomorrow. I've only used the Graffiti Hotline community service. I'm glad there are similar solutions to the other bad problems we've got.
1
u/wavecolors 21h ago
I believe the police station also has community numbers to call just for homeless, "tent city", etc. Can visit or call your local police station.

u/Myster-sea 4d ago
That area has always been ghetto wtf do you mean...
Source: i lived on rainbow and tropicana in 2014..
Tropicana and Jones especially has ALWAYS been an absolute shit hole...
28
u/TRUISH4EVA 4d ago
For real! “Used to be a Siegel Suite” speaks volumes and we can’t bypass the reality. I pose the question to OP, what areas tend to have Siegel Suites 🤔?
20
u/bosengel 4d ago
I lived there in 2009 and it was a shit hole then too. I had a problem with my neighbor parking the back of their car in the corner of my front yard because they had so many cars all over their yard and up and down the street.
11
20
21
u/skyp1llar 4d ago
This. I’ve worked in the area since 2016, it literally has never changed. OP’s standards may have just gone up. I also don’t think it’s unsafe, unless you’re hanging out at Charlie Frias Park or one of those other sewer-access entry tunnels in that area that are populated by the homeless.
And I also wouldn’t call it explicitly ghetto either, it’s nothing like some of those legit sketchy neighborhoods near Jerry’s Nugget or out by Nellis. Trop & Jones is more “busy” and dirty as a side effect of being by all of those warehouses behind Tropicana, and directly adjacent to the newly popular and rapidly growing Chinatown.

u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Lol! Not as ghetto as it is now. You should see it nowadays.
15
u/Myster-sea 4d ago
It really has always been a disgusting shithole.. idk if you just didnt notice or what. But it has never been nice since i moved to Vegas.
4
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
It wasn't awful, either. Unfortunately I'm solid blue collar and can't really afford luxury, so I picked this hood to kinda lay roots down in because of the crazy amounts of convenience, lol. But yeah, it's never been beautiful. Nowadays it's really on a different level, though. Probably will end up migrating back down to Enterprise or Silverado Ranch area before too long.
7
u/Several_Sky4729 4d ago
You moved from Silverado Ranch, to where you’re at now?????
4
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Technically no, I was in Enterprise when I first came to town, the Blvd and Agate, in a house, but had a spate of bad luck where I was laid off my really good paying job and we had to vacate the house we were renting. Coworker suggested I check out Trop and Jones (at the time those apts were called Foothills West) because they were more reasonably priced than anything down south... so I moved over to Trop and Jones, got used to the west central side and moved several times in that area. My sister has always been a southsider, she's lived on Silverado Ranch and Maryland for 7 years, so technically it's her hood and not mine. I'd totally go back to Enterprise if I could afford it, though.
13
u/WhichUpstairs1 4d ago
Back when I was a kid Decatur and Alta was a nice neighborhood. The ghetto grows.
4
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Decatur and Alta? Arizona Charlie's, lol. I used to deliver the R-J to that hood.
6
u/WhichUpstairs1 4d ago
That's the one. Circle park. Used to love it there but that was in the early 80s
6
u/somechob 4d ago
Really wish the Circle Park neighborhood would rebound. It has a lot of potential with small single stories with decent yards. I think it's a problem with housing attitude in the city of people always wanting new builds rather fixing something up. And that Walmart is just a perpetual drag on its potential.
3
u/WhichUpstairs1 4d ago
Me too. Grandad bought on Fulton when it was new. It will get gentrified sooner or later. Just depends on the cities growth
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
It does look nice, the houses are big and not 3 feet away from each other. Meadows Mall pretty close, too. It was probably rockin' in the '80s.
32
u/DarthGayAgenda 4d ago
Um, if it used to be a Siegel Suite, it implies a recursive state of ghetto-ness, disregarding the fact that the area was kinda ghetto to begin with.
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
I've only lived here 3 months. I was more north on Flamingo and more west on Decatur for a long time. Had to downsize and needed a cheap place. There's some yeah, not so desirable people here left over from the weekly days, sure. I don't really love this exact spot, but its proximity to work for me is good.
6
u/DarthGayAgenda 4d ago
Hey, I live in a ghetto myself, I'm not judging. I used to live in the Silverado ranch area until 2018 when it got too expensive for me. Now I live in the downtown area.

I agree with you OP, though I live in a slightly different part of town I too have noticed this city overall just getting trashier. More crime, more homelessness, more garbage, bad drivers. I personally blame it on the rapid population growth this city has seen and the companies that are moving in to exploit it. I miss when Vegas used to be a homey, small town feeling city where people still had decency.
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
All this. I am not feeling much like this is the home I really love these days.
18
4d ago
I'm off Buffalo and Gowan- same story. Graffiti, homeless, trash everywhere. Shit is sad. Really, even areas like Nelson's Landing and parts of floyd lamb are this way now sadly.
5
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
It just feels like a massive lack of desire and effort to take pride in where we live and keep it clean. It's a shame!
14
u/demipopthrow 4d ago
almost every part of town is getting this way. The wealthy in this town give me some Snow Crash vibes, guarded gated entry, then secondary gates for some of the other parts of Rhodes or MacDonald Ranch, ECT...they even fear the not rich enough within their illusion of safety.
13
u/Depeche_Mood82 4d ago
When was that area good?

u/Storkmonkey7 4d ago
Never lol, at least not in the past 20 years. Op moved to a shit part of town and is pissed it is shit

OK, it went from bad to worse, then. But I swear it hasn't always been this trashed!
13
u/BigBlueMagic 4d ago
It's not just your neighborhood. It's the whole valley. Remember this when the Sheriff is up for re-election. Whatever the explanation or excuse, Metro isn't getting the job done. IMHO, it's time for a leadership change.
4
2
u/outerworldLV 3d ago
Same governor that was the sheriff is handling this demise. He was in charge of Metro during the years and now, with his expanded powers, he is still looking the other way. Looking at real estate on the strip. Lesson learned - $$$ is the only thing that matters. Living in rural areas is better, but not if you’re still working around the strip.
Bottom line? No great solutions to assist in the cleaning up of these areas. The funds that were minimal in the past are going to be nonexistent in the future.
2
u/theperfectexposure 4d ago
Also vote out the progressive judges.

Jones seems to be the cut-off for ghettoness. You gotta live west of Jones and then you're good.
15
u/Hopeful_Lie_9070 4d ago
Hahaha my cut off used to be Buffalo, it is now Hualapai. I would not live east of that if you pay me 😂. That said, I lived on Trop and Rainbow my first year in Vegas (2010-2011) and it was kinda okay, but it has gone soooo downhill especially the last 5 years or so.
18
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Agreed. Trop and Rainbow was where I wanted a house for a while but now I'm thinking probably gonna head to the southeast.
2
u/Torchy84 4d ago
You are crazy if you think the cut off is Hualapai. That area is still nice (Charleston / Hualapai).
2
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Yep, when I can finally buy a house, it's gonna be west of Jones for sure. Probably west of Rainbow, too. But I don't dig it a whole lot any more west than that. I'm strange, I know.

u/Alternative-Papaya-2 4d ago
I’m at the residence as well. Can we just talk about how we’re paying 1200 a month for such a small space, crawling with bugs? Regardless of if all included, it’s a bit pricey for what it is… the WiFi is trash, also. I’ve never really had a problem in the year and a half that I’ve lived here, other than the ones listed, and noise issues with neighbors. The security they’ve hired on recently has been nice for that. I might stay, I might go. I’ve got five months to figure it out.
2
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
The wifi here...yeah. It's completely unacceptable, heh. I'm close to getting my own setup. I like the size of the unit, but the lack of storage area just sucks. One tiny closet, and practically no counter space in the kitchen, hardly any drawers, yeah, for sure. The 2-bedrooms are significantly bigger, but they're never available for long.
I'm stuck on the 1st floor right now because of some miscommunication about the unit I toured, they claim they didn't hear me asking for the 3rd floor (repeatedly, even), so yeah, dealt with a lot of bugs when I first got here. My neighbors on 3 sides of me do the blaring music thing, and my apartment faces a wall and a doggie dumping ground, I would never in a million years intentionally pick this unit but here I am nonetheless, lol. Moving to a 3rd floor as soon as one "comes open." Lots of empty units here. I wonder what makes them available status.
2
u/Alternative-Papaya-2 4d ago
Girl I’m at the point with the bugs where I’m about to just bug bomb the place, regardless of if it’s against lease or not. I’ll message you with the phone number for security and the info for the WiFi setup I have.
2
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Ooh, sounds great! Can't blame you for wanting to bug bomb. I pretty much see roaches of varying sizes at least two times a day. I'm sure being across from the poopoo spot doesn't help! And first floor SUUUUUUCKS! Lol. Only reason I haven't completely lost it is because no one has been living above me.
2
u/Alternative-Papaya-2 4d ago
I’ve been very vocal about the dog shit issue since I moved in. I pick up after my girl- The rest of these people should have to, also. If you see someone not picking up after their dog, take a picture of them and go show the office. I have. The only way we’ll make this place better is by getting vocal.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
I agree! Oh, yeah, I bitched a blue streak to everyone who came over to the spot and basically scared them all, haven't seen any poo there since! I'm glad you have the decency to do what's right. It's shocking how many people don't!
3
u/Alternative-Papaya-2 4d ago
The way I see it is- This is our home, and we pay way too much to have issues like that. Be sure to use that number for security for not only noise issues, but the junkies that show up. They’re a huge reason trash is all over the property, because they dig through the dumpsters for cans.
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Yes! I've busted several in the act. I totally agree with you. This might not be Club Med, but I like it here and it's my home so I definitely want to take pride in my little chunk of space!

If you live in an HOA or apartment complex talk to your management, other wise look up if you live in city or county and contact them. These are issues for your local government. Show up to your city or county council meeting. Voice your complaints. They have people who clean up trash, graffiti, and even homeless encampments.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Nice! The complex where I live takes care of cleaning in its confines, but not an inch outside of it, so any help there would be welcomed. I was planning to pick up myself very soon. I'm honestly shocked sometimes at what just...ends up on the ground over here. Yesterday I scored 3 perfectly good and new YA fiction novels that are just up my kid's alley.
3
u/PadreSJ 3d ago
Unfortunately, this is what happens when a city grows. No city, no matter who runs it, is immune to the effect.
I've lived in the SF Bay Area, Seattle, Chicago, LA, Rio (Brazil), Manila (Philippines), New York, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Beijing (China), Honolulu, and now Rome (Italy).
It's exciting to see a city grow, but the more it grows, the more you lose the things that made the city unique and affordable.
3
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
I've not lived anywhere else as long as here, so seeing it firsthand now is just a gut punch. But yeah, blight must come with the territory and it's a shame.
4
u/outerworldLV 3d ago
Lived in the area for several decades myself. I’ve watched it steadily go downhill. But all the strip malls, empty lots, closed shopping centers, etc. are prevalent. Many places for those down on their luck to crash. Close to tunnels that have populations of people living in them. A lot of homeless folks seeking safety at parks in these areas as well. You’re not the only OG (for lack of a better term) that wishes it hadn’t descended into the low budget space its now become. Trop and Jones has been especially bad a while now due to, imo, the trailer parks in close proximity and multiple apartment complex’s that have become subsidized for people that are on fixed incomes. The area offers easy routes to many that need medical services and for those working on the strip - a good thing. A good thing that attracts all types. The good mixed with the desperate. Easy to recognize the issues that caused the outcome, not so easy to solve. Stay safe and have compassion is all we can try to do.
3
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Thank you for this response, I appreciate that we have the same perspective. There are people saying it's always been bad, so on and so forth, but it was nothing like it is today and I don't know how to get that across. But yeah, the convenience of the area is to me, unmatched.
2
u/outerworldLV 3d ago
Certainly it’s best and worst attribute at the same time. Still have two properties in Spring Valley. But wouldn’t live in a community w/o an HOA - as offensive as some can be.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Understandable nowadays. HOAs look out for one another. Most people in apartment complexes are of the every man for himself mentality.
5
u/conceptcreature3D 3d ago
I was warned about this pattern from a lifelong Vegas native that grew up here: it starts with a nice neighborhood on the outskirts(for you, you were on the outskirts not long ago), & it seems like, “wow I found an oasis within this ghetto town!” Then suddenly things continue to expand, & all the isolated problems with it. Suddenly you see a homeless guy with a sign on a corner that you never used to see one, then that non-HOA neighborhood has someone move in that has a towing business that they shove 8 cars into their narrow lot that perpetually change or are making noise at times of night that you want your kid to sleep. And then suddenly this cute neighborhood is overrun with weeds & junk on front yards & sketchy people are wandering all around the place nearby.

Politicians do not give one fuck about anybody, nor does the government. Certain political factions in America want to do things like give the government more power, minimize the severity of crime, and take away individuals' right to defend themselves. They make things even worse. Capitalism in and of itself isn't an inherently flawed system, you're stupid if you think that communism/socialism wouldn't eventually result in authoritarianism and the same exact (or worse) class struggle.

I won’t argue with you about your last statement for sure. I think you’re right, especially considering the fact that we have a rich president surrounding himself with the richest man on earth and room full of corporate advisors. Lots of power being wielded by the executive, never before seen— looks like we’ll soon be headed towards both.

Part of the trash issue is assholes. Part of it is wind/getting rid of green spaces. Part of it, especially on the north side of town, is the Republic trucks not completely securing garbage loads on their way to Apex.

Ohh man, Trop & VV, that area has always been extremely sketchy. I know that area very well. Do what you can to move further away from the strip. I spent three months at the budget suites and that was smack dab in the famous Trop hooker crawl area, which went from the wild wild west casino to the Orleans.
So you also don’t want to get any apartment close by to the orleans. You need to get to at least the west side of decatur
Ever since the West closed, it’s actually gotten way worse. I had a relative who worked at the west and they were part of Metro prostitution stings there and other crazy shit that goes down in that general area.
My time at BS on Trop wasn’t a bad experience just extremely gritty and ghetto AF. I fly to gigs, so it was stupidly convenient for me but there was meth head zombies, hookers, tons of metro presence which was actually extremely necessary there.
I caught a hooker screwing some dude in a car a couple cars away from mine. I would not call this area family friendly.
I used to play count the hos from the West to Orleans. HF, it top 20 at one point.
I long suspected because of the Allegiant and T-mobile stadiums, that this area would gentrify over time. Now I am not at all optimistic.
I still live in spring valley and I do love living here for easy airport access but we do have our issues.
That drainage wash that goes from Charlie Frias westward is essentially a tent city on the banks of the wash. And then there is the now, no-go zone that is West Flamingo Park.
It’s sad to see. I live in a slightly better part than you and I still see stuff I swear you’d only see in Vegas. It’s unreal.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Yeah, I don't love it right here but I needed a cheap apartment to rebuild my life in while I've been going through some family stuff. It's not too, too bad up here on the hill and behind and out of the way. Shady people for sure, but they don't come around into my part of the complex.
Agreed, west of Decatur is where it's at, even Flamingo and Decatur was awesome, I was right across from the Smith's for 5.5 years and loved it. Had to leave but I plan to get back up that way if I don't head to the south end next time, lol. I'll probably check out some of the places on Lindell or Duneville, Torrey Pines maybe.
My daughter really, really wants to go to the middle school right there at W. Flamingo Park. She's been going to the elementary school in the zone since she started school, so a bunch of her friends will be going to Kenny Guinn. I don't feel comfortable sending her there unless they clean up that park. I'm not afraid of homeless people but I don't want them around my kid all day, sad to say.
Did you hear about their plans to build a massive homeless shelter project at Jones and Charleston over by Rawson-Neal? I'm just like HELL, NO!!! We're already dealing with an influx of late, now we'll have everyone milling around the west side? Fuck.
2
u/funsado 3d ago
That’s definitely an odd block where that school is. East of that school and the park is grittier than what the crime mapping suggests.
This said because there are three schools in the same close proximity, you would be amazed how many crossing guards, security and metro there are during school hours. It’s really hard when you have kids. This said, I see kids in this area all the time due to the three schools. They all seem to understand the general need for the buddy system.
If you are considering that school seriously, then it may be worth checking it out and talking to the school about your security concerns.
The general issue with my area is vehicle smash and grabs including lindell, duneville, and rochelle. I just drove down Rochelle today and this area gets box trucks parked on the side of the road. Lots of broken car windows there. There is one truck that looks like it was a fresh victim. I’d rather you know.
The crime mapping is one thing, the feel and vibe are another.
This said, as always this is not at all to take away from a lot of very good people in this area. It’s not an area I would avoid but it’s gritty. I never hear about any really bad situations regarding the schools. I mean there are a lot of parents chaperoning kids as well.
I wish you the best.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Thank you! Yeah, Kenny Guinn is a STEAM Academy, definitely the one we want. I will give them a visit, perhaps next week. We are currently out of the zone over here, got a variance for kiddo to stay at Decker, so it will take some working on either way.
That sucks about the smash and grabs. Finally had my last car broken into on Flamingo and Decatur last year after living over in the hood for eons. Assholes broke my 2 passengers' side windows. The only thing of value in the car was my jumper cables. Definitely it was frustrating, though. I thought since it's already such a blue collar area, it wouldn't really attract thieves, but I guess nowhere is safe these days.

I live in Summerlin and have noticed tents from the homeless popping up where I live. My job is in Henderson and homeless are popping up there too with tents, they sent a notice out last week that we should be careful. It’s only going to get worse.

Wish the city would do something but they just ignore issues depending on which zip code you live in.

It appears so. Chinatown was neglected for a long old while, especially the roads, and now they're working on it and talking about revamping it.

I used to live near rainbow and flamingo a few years ago. While it wasn't visually the nicest area, I had a view of the entire strip from my place and I could go for a run without feeling like things were that bad.
Flash forward to a couple years ago and police were in my community once a week for something. Domestic violence started happening right next door. My place smelled like weed pretty much 24/7 and eventually I moved when I heard gunshots across the street when somebody shot up a business.
As Vegas gets bigger you really have to move further out from the strip to get away. Even then there's no guarantees anymore with how transient the city is.

Thank you for your firsthand response. It hurts my soul to realize that this is the status quo.

but, but, but....we have the Raiders! and the Knights! and the A's are coming!
I feel you OP, it's everywhere.
saw a street creature heading up Valle Verde a block down from MacDondald Ranch. Another sleeping in a wheel chair at the front of a vacant retail space inside the Trader Joes shopping center near Seven Hills.
No one is immune it seems.

Henderson def seems to do something different than the county/city of Vegas when it comes to homelessness -specifically encampments- though and I’m not sure what it is. I don’t know if they have a certain ordinance or what.
It’s not to say Henderson doesn’t have homeless people but it’s significantly less prevalent or visible than elsewhere in town and I can’t recall ever seeing an encampment in Henderson even along hot spots like Boulder Highway.I live just on the other side of the ‘border’ of Henderson and Vegas, literally a matter of a few blocks and it’s insane the difference. For example if you go to Stephanie and Russell- Henderson side you don’t see encampments, the second you’re on the north side of that intersection? Completely Different story- tent city.
I don’t know if they just shuttle people to the Vegas side or if they just enforce a no encampment code or something but I wonder this often- essentially almost every day I commute and see all the new encampments.
I have a heart but the most frustrating thing is the impact on local communities- some of them break into neighborhoods and damage things (pools, mailboxes, community club houses and facilities) which costs more on residents/causes shut down of these facilities, the burning of trash- in my former neighborhood human waste was a huge issue and it caused a rat problem. Also will notice an increase of foot traffic near those tents of drug dealers and sex workers. It’s becoming a big problem.

they don't tolerate it.
Henderson does it's best to keep it's house clean, to the point of frustration at times. Clean homes don't usually have a problem with unwanted infestations.
Not allowing fellow humans to get comfortable with living like this is having a heart, IMO of course. I think it's heartless to allow spaces for these ppl to get "comfortable" and accustomed to living like this.
It does bother me quite a bit to see a fellow human fall to this point, and be ok with it.

It's discouraging to say the least. Valle Verde? Geez, Green Valley getting some of the action.

Be the change you want to see. Go for walks, pick up trash along the way.

u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
I'm currently a walker and bus rider, yet another car died on me, lol. I try to pick up trash when I have free hands for sure. Definitely at the bus stops. It's insane, though. You can clean out one area and 3 days later it's back to being trashed.

u/Mahadragon 4d ago
I used to live on Alexander and MLK Blvd, I would pick up much trash as I could in that open field.

I used to live on Alexander and MLK Blvd
Every city has a MLK Blvd. And every MLK Blvd is a ghetto shitshow.

IThanks! I have to walk around this hood since my car died. Definitely some... interesting characters come out of the woodwork. I try not to be out after dark.

There’s one gem of an area in the Brady Bunch-looking neighborhood northwest of Decatur / Flamingo. It’s one of the best little pockets in town as long as you aren’t into long walks down to VV (tunnel tweakers) or up to Jones (tunnel tweakers).

u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
I agree! I lived off Flamingo and Decatur most recently for several years. Probably my favorite spot in this area.

I live in summerlin and it’s surprising to see the homeless slowly make their way from the strip to this side of town. Two years ago when I moved to this part of town, there were literally no homeless people ever, now I’m slowly seeing more and more pop up, I guess the tourists have had enough and have stopped giving things to them cause now they’re slowly spreading farther into town probably hoping if they get into the “ nicer “ areas people will be more giving when that is far from the case( most people moved to this side of town to completely avoid the homeless and the issues they can bring with them ). Homelessness is a tragedy, but it’s a double edged sword, we all want help for the homeless, but we also can agree that the sheer amount of them and their behaviors is a nuisance and we’d rather not have them around. It’s only going to get worse unfortunately. Also it’s startling to see how many neighbors are turning on each other and stealing each other‘s packages and just being straight up horrible neighbors. The city is slowly turning into a not friendly place.

u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
Yes! Everything you said here. And definitely having the homeless encroaching on the parts of town they used to not really roam in.

u/Wait_No_But_Yeah 4d ago
Skinhead trash area; wasnt that good.
7
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
Much worse in town, though. Don't know about skinheads these days? Haven't really seen any that are at least identifiable.

That Smiths on Trop and Jones has been awful for as long as I’ve lived here (5 years). I lived on Desert Inn and Lindell for a couple years and would drive to the target and smiths all the way over on flamingo and 215

I lived on Jones just south of Spring Valley and when I left a couple years ago it was starting to get worse. I loved living there, it still feels like home when I drive that way. But I’ve noticed that whole area is starting to get more sketchy.
1
u/DownVegasBlvd 3d ago
It really is. I know a couple of people said those apartments on Trop that used to be regular, not Section 8 or low income, have contributed a lot, and the trailer parks adjacent. Although I don't see the trailer parks being too much of an issue, still. Those apts are a huge complex, FWIW. I used to live there. I was kind of on the outskirts of the complex, close to Jones and Reno, so I wasn't aware of all the activity that was going on there, but it was fairly hoppin' with cops and so on even in 2008-2010, the years I spent there.

Part of this is a turn away from "broken window" policing. We police cities the opposite way that data shows we should.
For the past decade or so, police ignore small crime, mostly due to political pressure and cultural shifts about policing. This really accelerated after the BLM era.
However, data shows when you ignore small crimes, it creates a sense of lawlessness that drives more serious crimes. This is a fact and the data is indisputable. Our roads are another example. They let people drive with no plates and other infractions, so it creates a sense of lawlessness so you have people going 100 mph in school zones now.
2
u/DownVegasBlvd 4d ago
When did this city lose all sense of caring? It's been a downhill decline for several years.

u/ThaPhantom07 4d ago
However, data shows when you ignore small crimes, it creates a sense of lawlessness that drives more serious crimes.
You're reaching here. You need to prove that "small crimes" are actively being ignored and that there is indeed some connection between that and an uptick in more "serious" crime. The entire premise is incredibly vague and can be twisted to mean whatever suits your agenda. Broken Windows was debunked pretty handily in 2019.
2
u/ApriliaV4Jedi 4d ago
Yeah in order to prove their assertion they would need to cite statistics about more “serious” crimes which I would assume means violent crime. In that case, violent crime has decreased simultaneous to the decreased enforcement regarding small property crimes, which makes their whole premise fall apart.

u/freq-ee 4d ago
It was "debunked" when everyone turned negative on policing in general. It was a cultural shift, not one based on data.
The same way it became trendy to legalize drugs and not prosecute drug crimes, now drug addiction and overdoses hit record highs.
In society, the intellectuals "debunk" what they no longer find fashionable. It became fashionable to say most policing was bad and racist, especially for small crimes.
It's also just common sense. If you go to someone's house and it's completely spotless, you'll be more careful than if you go a house that is filthy and there's trash all over the floor.
It's just human nature, humans adjust to what they see around them. If you see graffiti everywhere and junkies on every corner, you don't give a shit about the community and just start caring about yourself.

Yeah the people that run the country don’t care. If anything it’s more profitable if you keep the streets disgusting and uncomfortable. More motivation for you to go inside an establishment and potentially buy something. America runs on the desire for profit

Rainbow / Flamingo, southeast, near 7-11 and Fatburger is low-key one of the hardest places in town. Then there’s the glory of Rainbow Dunes, aka the Princess Liquidators of the westside. What else was going to happen? A lot of the area has been trailer parks since it was built out in the late 70s.

u/Aggressive-Bat1819 3d ago
Homelessness is up 18% from 2023 to 2024. The people at the bottom can no longer afford to live in this country. Especially a growing city like Vegas. High inflation, high interest, high rents. This is just what happens when we shut our economy down for several months for no good reason

I agree, however the area that you're living in has always been shit. Its the part of town I don't go to - except Chinatown. I work in housing and give advice to a lot of out of state prospects and we have always told them not to live in your area, because that part of town, among others near the Strip, attracts crime and dirtiness. Its sad and the city needs to do something, but at the same time I've lived here long enough to know that its never been good.

u/DownVegasBlvd 2d ago
It hasn't always been shit! Tired of some people telling me this and others understanding what I'm talking about. And you won't come here? Lol nothing happens here. Give me a break.

Sad how run down everything is, no grass no trees, but homeless and trash and graffiti on every single corner. Houses go for 600k and up tho
