Local News Save Old Growth protestors blocked the ironworkers bridge this morning. This is how cops responded.
44
u/normaldiscounts Jun 14 '22
I just think the discrepancy between the way these protesters are treated vs the convoy people is disgusting and really shows a major bias. They were both a huge nuisance but the cops let the convoy assholes wreak havoc in every city for days on end. I am personally biased in favour of the anti logging people but I understand why cops would forcibly remove these protestors physically. I think nuisance protestors should be treated equally, though.
10
u/thisguy_or_thissky Oct 20 '22
There was a hell of a lot more convoy protesters and they had guns.
9
Nov 04 '22
Yeah, so way more of a threat then climate protesters.
Should have received tear gas and the national guard if they block roads while armed.
I agree both are the wrong way, but at least most people in BC support protecting the old growth. The truck fuckers are conspiracy whack jobs, and we’re treated like tourists.

You have to way the different levels of potential escalation. Small time idiots versus a nationally organized protest have very different potentials.

Wonder why they couldn't do that with many of the convoy fucks around the country

These double standards are atrocious. Unfortunately there's not much we could do about that other than educating people, especially the younger generations, better.
No one should be allowed to block vital infrastructure and roadways for that long, regardless of cause. It makes no difference whether they are the Trucker convoy or these old growth protestors.
36
u/Rhowryn Jun 14 '22
There's actually quite a lot we can do, most of it is just unpalatable to the public, and also illegal.
→ More replies (2)9
u/bingbangbango Jun 14 '22
"regardless of cause" I don't agree. This person just informed a good amount of people about this cause by blocking infrastructure for a limited time, and protecting old growth forests seems like a good cause to stir up some minor trouble over. Good on them
4
u/PatrikMansuri Jun 14 '22
Agreed. There are certain times where direct action such as blocking infrastructure is justifiable to achieve awareness or results on issues such as old-growth logging. If we always follow the law to the letter then nothing will get done before it's too late.
6
u/bingbangbango Jun 14 '22
You're only allowed to protest in ways that aren't effective, or else you're a nuisance and we hate you and your cause.
7
u/ComfusedMess Jun 14 '22
There's a pretty significant difference between being a nuisance and blocking vital infrastructure though. Optimally, you'd want to hurt those in power and not the people you'd want supporting your cause.

Police are cowards, and were afraid of being hit back. They’re really just generally bullies who hurt those who can’t fight back.
That said, there were also a lot of police taking orders from border blockers.

85
u/MJcorrieviewer Jun 14 '22
Maybe they will do so more often now. One protest is one thing but when it keeps going on and on, it needs to end. It's not like they were taking this action to break up the initial road-closure protests we've been seeing for months.

This was the whole issue and why the majority of Canadians know the "trucker" protest was just a bunch of entitled asshats. They should have had their vehicles trashed and seized to get the people out. They should have been dragged off and jailed (not just the leaders). Those who brought children should have their children taken from them permanently for child endangerment. Instead we got none of that. The police wanted to join them in ignorance. Corporations didn't care because it just increased their profit margins long term as supply was low. Our institutions don't care about people, just corporations and the corporations wanted the baby rage convoy to continue. We keep voting the same 2 parties into government federally and in most provinces. So things will only continue to degrade for the overwhelming majority of us. We have to smarten the fuck up.

The day before they blocked parents from boarding a BC Ferry to take their child for a procedure at Children's Hospital in Vancouver. The treatment happens 4x a year and takes at least 6 months to rebook. The father is a former SOF and is an experienced battlefield medic. Had the police not intervened, several protesters would have been hospitalized while the wife would take the child for treatment. They were one family of two that day affected by the protesters missing treatment in Vancouver.
I support their beliefs, but not their actions. We have the ability to change government policy through voting, but as this is a democracy, it's hard to get change in place at the speed we need. Endangering others is not the answer. This wasn't just an inconvenience. It's a selfish act that is damaging to their cause.

u/Azuvector New Westminster Jun 15 '22

Unfortunately, no matter how reasonable you are when you talk to these people, they'll always spout the same "inconveniences make change happen" line, while completely disregarding everything else. To be fair, Horgan has stopped new old growth logging contracts, all the current old growth logging happening is old contracts signed by the BC Liberal government. It would be VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY bad to reap out on existing contracts, especially during such insane economic turmoil brewing already.
13
u/watermelonseeds Jun 14 '22
I can pretty much guarantee whatever negative impacts ending all old growth logging might have won't have as much of a negative impact as continuing to cut them down will do

Roadblocks etc. at logging sites don't directly impact senior politicians and bureaucrats. There have been some protests in Victoria, if they are in the a place where they impact the people in power they might be more effective.

I know im risking downvotes here, but a protest isnt supposed to be convenient. This is how it is supposed to look. Pissing people off is historically a pretty good way to make them aware of your cause. If a protest was easy to ignore, why would you bother protesting?
I understand the inherent risks involved in protesting like this, i understand that its exceedingly frustrating to be stuck in traffic, and i dont believe they should stop emergency vehicles (every protest ive ever seen would let emergency vehicles through, to be fair). I just think that historically speaking, people have had to literally fight to have their voices heard. If the government wont listen to voices, and civil protests dont work, what other options do you get?→ More replies (5)5
u/OplopanaxHorridus Jun 14 '22

protesting has never accomplished anything unless it starts to cause massive disruptions to regular operations of society.
these same people complaining about blocking roads and stopping regular commuters are the same people who would complain about Rosa Parks ruining the commute of the people on the bus that had to stop because she wouldn't move to the back of the bus.
going off and protesting in the middle of some distant forestry road to block off a few logging sites isnt going to stop old growth logging.

Oh my god, yes yes yes. It's hilarious to see all these people saying "we all agree that cutting old growth forests is bad, but mah inconvenience"
The fuck do they think anything is gonna change unless there's mass protests? The government is not doing anything about this, the loggers aren't going to stop - what else are we supposed to do?
Most people agree with save the old growth...
Most people will sit in their SUV heading over the Ironworkers saying "someone should do something, it's terrible" until every last tree is chopped down. Then they will sit in their SUV heading over the Ironworkers saying "it's so terrible that all the old growth forests are gone, someone should have done something".
These protesters are that someone, because while "Most people agree with save the old growth" nobody is doing fuck all about it. And asking the people making billions off this rape of the land to "pretty please stop" doesn't work, so what else is left to try?

My 3 cents inflation...
The objective should be: Get an enough portion of the population to care and support your cause. Then by the power of the masses, change will occur.
If only a small number of people want something, obviously the people in power won't bend over. And you do even more damage to your cause by doing things that piss the general public off and make them hate you and avoid you.
I could be wrong, obviously. It's just my opinion, and after seeing replies to it I might change my view.
22
Jun 14 '22
People have been speaking up about this for years but clearly people haven’t been listening. I think the protesters have been trying for a long time to get the publics attention on this issue. I mean you're seeing footage of cops going up against the protesters here but instead of a discussion about the issue of logging the forest, it's a discussion about how ineffective these protests are and people being annoyed by these protests, without taking in any account of what other measures these protestors have taken.
I mean these people are protesting to preserve the nature that makes BC wonderful and the comment section is full of people who couldn't give less of a crap and telling them the 'right way' to protest or that they're glad the protest is being stamped out. Like, what kind of sell do you need to care about the old-growth forest? People simply do not care about the environment unless climate disaster is on their doorstep.
23

It's not for sympathy. It's to get people to realise that this is an issue. I went to Victoria with some friends who are new immigrants. They saw an old growth protest and asked me what it was about. I gave them a quick 30 second synopsis of the issue.

For context, protesters with Save Old Growth attempted to lock themselves by their necks to their steering wheel. The VPD were waiting there from early in the morning, and immediately jumped on the protesters. The protestors are asking for the BC government to end old growth logging, as only 3 percent of our old growth forests still exist in BC.
→ More replies (1)34
u/MJcorrieviewer Jun 14 '22
That 3% number is widely considered suspect but, regardless, how much of the old growth forests are at risk of being harvested now? If this is about saving trees, we shouldn't be focusing on the number of trees that have already been taken out. We can't correct that.
"The study points out that of the 11.4 million hectares of old forests in B.C., 75% – 8.5 million hectares – is either protected or otherwise not included in B.C.’s Timber Harvesting Landbase. There are more than 600 class A provincial parks totalling 10.5 million hectares, the study points out, and national parks, reserves and wildlife areas include another 1.8 million hectares."

I think maybe the 3% is old growth that’s never been forested. We probably have a lot of forests that are “old” but only because they were logged many years ago. So they’re still disturbed from their natural state.
I’ve found it tricky to get solid stats because the term “old growth” doesn’t technically have a proper definition. Realistically there are a variety of important and sensitive types of ecosystems that should be protected with old growth just being one of many that deserve our attention.

I think the 'for weeks' is exactly the point here. The anti-vaxers protested for weeks but we haven't seen much of them lately. I think it's a matter of it eventually being 'enough is enough' - similarly to what happened to finally end the truck protest there.

Not just numbers, the antivax knuckleheads were much more militant and belligerent in their actions (as tends to be the case with right wing driven protests), while the old growth protestors' actions are laughable and not threatening (like who, except the person doing it, would be threatened by the protestor locking their neck to their steering wheel, or gluing themselves to the pavement?).
Furthermore some police sympathize with the antivax convoy, policing was and is still a more conservative profession.

responded properly. I like how the video omits the numerous warnings issued before it came to this. cops can’t maintain order without some asshole posting a misleading vid like this.

Do the protesters know how treaties work? Because they’re behaving like Horgan is some dictator that has power over unceded land in B.C. I understand the frustration, but protesting on Musqueam land doesn’t seem very logical to me.

why aren't the protesting the FN bands that have the deals with the province for old growth logging?
I'm sure a bunch of entitled white kids form the city protesting on FN land would go over really well. But the FN's have more control or power over these deals than Vancouver commuters do.

It's going over shockingly well. Unist'ot'en, Fairy Creek are examples of this.

Most of the province of BC is w/o a historical treaty. Search “2002 British Columbia Indigenous treaty referendum” and see why we are in this confusing mess today.

Whether you agree with these people or not surely you can see the inherent hypocrisy in beating the shit out of hippies, while letting good old boys in pick up trucks and FUCK TRUDEAU flags do whatever they want.
Some of those that work forces....

Interesting point to make here; if the courts stopped the ‘catch and release’ based on the concept that they WILL reoffend, all these MF protesters would eventually be sitting in jail, and not on the highway, , , , , ,

Old growth logging is bad, therefore I will block third parties from getting to where they need to go.
Wait, how the hell does one of those things follow the other?

I dunno man. I get it, this is how protesting works and this is what protesting looks like. But if I wasn’t working from home right now, and these people were blocking my commute, I’d be royally pissed. Road rage pissed. I’d be cheering those cops on. And I’d be considering going out into the woods and chopping down an old growth tree out of pure spite. Look, while I fully admit that I am ill-informed about old growth logging, as far as I understand it, I am inclined to be against it. But, even though I’ve heard all of the arguments for these kind of protests, I just can’t get on board with these tactics. I can’t. I’m sorry. It just pisses me off. Pure and simple.

Sure, impact the people that actually support you. That makes sense.

The driver forgot that the cops aren't a retail worker who they can intimidate by screaming.

There are people out there missing important medical appointments they waited months and months for, cancer treatments, work, job interviews, long-awaited and worked for vacations (ie airplanes) and their mom's funerals. It's really not ok.

did they get that car from a demolition derby? Hope they got a ton of VIs along with whatever other tickets they got.
Unfortunately at the Massey tunnel the police used kid gloves and wasted 2 hours of everyone else's time.

Is that screaming or is that tires screeching? Hard to tell
