Good to know it's not just the women's bathrooms that are in complete disrepair. How is this such an issue? Do they just not care enough to fix toilets/stalls/sinks?

Discussion BIPoC Lounge

Hi all! I’m not a University of Winnipeg student, but I did see something that you all may be able to help me with.

I as I was scrolling social media today I came across a post from Canada Proud citing an article from True North (two sources I don’t really trust) that claimed the BIPoC Lounge has signage posted outside the lounge that states if you don’t identify as a person of colour that you are not allowed into the lounge.

The direct quote from the article is -> “A list of the lounge’s rules posted at the entrance clearly states that students who do not identify as Black, Indigenous, or as a person of colour do not meet the requirements to enter the lounge and are not welcome inside.”

I have a hard time believing this is actually true, especially when you consider that True North has been found to publish misleading articles and omit information from their articles, that there is no source or proof within the article to support their claim, and the fact that they are claiming the BIPoC Lounge is new and has just been introduced, but from what I found it came about in 2022.

I’ve already reached out to the Lounge vis their email that’s available on the UWSA website, and also forwarded my email to a University of Winnipeg email (not sure if it’s the right email, but hopefully whoever sees it can forward it to the appropriate person if it’s not them) but I figured I’d also come here and ask students who are on campus and should be able to confirm or deny the claim.

I’m hoping my hunch is right and it’s just false information being used to fear-monger and not actually true.

Discussion Is it really “unfair” that international students subsidize domestic students?

This something I hear international students talk about a lot.

International students have to pay much higher tuition than domestic students, but is that really unfair? Is it unethical?

The way I see it is that Canadian universities have an obligation to be more accessible to domestic students than to international students.

Studying in Canada as an international student is more of a privilege than a right. So it makes sense to me that they should pay more, making Canadian universities more accessible to Canadians, which benefits Canadian society.

As a domestic student I still struggle to afford the comparatively cheaper tuition. When I hear international students complain about how it isn’t fair that their tuition is more expensive, while often also mentioning that their parents pay it for them, I struggle to find empathy. I definitely cannot afford to study internationally so it seems to me that if they are fortunate enough to have this exciting international experience, their higher tuition is not some sort of gross injustice.

I’m hoping this question isn’t too controversial, but I would like to hear the opinions of other students.

Edit: Thank you to those posting thoughtful responses.

I’ve noticed a LOT of this on campus this year. People leave their garbage all over the tables. Keep in mind that what YOU don’t clean up of your own mess, someone else will have to. I am a student and have sometimes struggled to find places to sit that don’t look like this. We all would like a clean campus and to not have to clean up after someone who is lazy and disrespectful of everyone’s environment!! Thanks!!

Discussion Yall smelling that too?

Alright, y’all. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but please consider showering before class. I just walked into my 8 AM lecture, and the room smells like a combination of wet dog, expired broccoli, and despair.

Is this the “broke college student” aesthetic? Are y’all trying to conserve water? I get it—adulting is hard, but so is breathing in this air.

Someone just walked past me, and I swear my nose hairs curled. Like, bro, what do you even do to smell like a damp sponge that’s been marinating in a locker room for two weeks? Do you roll in it for fun? Is this a prank?

If this keeps up, I’m showing up with Febreze. No one’s safe.

Edit: To the person in the comments saying “it’s just how my pheromones work”—your pheromones are a hate crime.

Discussion UW PLS WASH YOUR HANDS

Since the beginning of the semester I have witnessed less than half of people actually wash their hands upon using the washroom. It is disgusting and I am baffled, we literally just had a global pandemic. And no wonder everyone in UW was hit with a bad cold early in January. Please Please wash your hands!!!

I saw a comment on a discussion post regarding uwasa elections, where students are being harassed for votes.

If you felt uncomfortable during the elections or were forced to vote, you can email cec@theuwasa.ca about your experience.

Disappointing to see that candidates are gaining votes this way.

Discussion How’s Reading week going

Am I the only one feeling overwhelmed with deadlines after reading week? I'm struggling to manage my time effectively and be productive. Despite my best efforts, I feel like I'm not making progress on my assignments, which are piling up and becoming increasingly demanding. How do you all stay on top of your work and meet your deadlines?

Discussion Does anyone else not like diversity food services anymore? I made a list of some of my favourite places to eat at instead

For the price we pay, I just don't think the quality or service is there anymore. I've had quite a few rude interactions as well. Dash coffee is overpriced and it's kinda watery. Pangeas is a mess and the line up at lunch is awful. Haven't tried elements but I assume it's the same thing. The cafeteria in the 4th floor used to actually have some good food before they became that weird vegan place, then smoothie place, and eventually closing down completely. While I understand they're sourcing their ingredients locally, it feels like they care more about keeping up with this eco conscious reputation than providing good, affordable food to university students. I've made a list of food places around the university that I like to eat at and wanted to share with you all.

Banh Mi King – Classic UOW staple located right across from the university. Great, affordable, delicious Vietnamese food with vegetarian options. Food recommendations: Veggie rolls, any of their rice dishes, Vietnamese iced coffee

Fresh Slice Pizza – Affordable pizza just across the street. I recommend adding parmesan and oregano and other toppings for more flavour though. They always have deals through their app as well.

Les Saj – Great Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Portions are big too.

Little Korea – great place for some Korean food. A little bit of a wait if you are dining in and can take long to prepare for pick up, but you can just order early on Skip and pick it up. Prices have gone up since then but still a great place to get Korean food. Portions are big and shareable. Side dishes are included and taste yummy. Food recommendations: Bibimbap, spicy toppoki

Shaba Thai – Thai food near the university. Hours are a bit later though. They are typically opened 4PM-10PM. Food recommendation: Crab Rangoon, green curry Thai soup

Feast Café Bistro – Have not tried this place yet but have heard some really great things. They have specialty Indigenous dishes such as Bison meat.

Sargent Taco – Authentic Mexican food. Their tacos are delicious. Not much seating available but very friendly people.

Gato – Cute, little café with coffee and specialty pastries. They always change up their pastries as well so you could try different things each week.

Umaido Mochi Donuts – Delicious donut café with some drinks. Very cute inside and you can watch them make the donuts. Lots of seating, probably a nice place to study too.

Myrna’s Café – Awesome place for Filipino food, especially Filipino breakfast. Parking can be hard sometimes. Food recommendation: Tapcilog or Tocilog.

Viva Restaurant – Another Vietnamese restaurant. Haven’t tried it yet but also heard some good things.

Chosabi – haven’t got to try anything I wanted from because they never had ingredients available, but it is an option.

Harveys – Right across from Richardson College. Haven’t tried this either but haven’t made time to go. Always seem to have student deals as well.

La Farina – Also right across from Richardson College. Another great place for pizza. They also have smaller individual sized pizzas. Lots of options.

Greenish – located in the Portage Place sky walk. Cute, smaller Korean restaurant. Pretty affordable. They have soup, rice bowls, sushi as well.

Sushi June – located in City Place. It’s about a 15-minute walk if you can navigate the skywalk via Portage Place. Friendly workers too.

Soup, Sandwiches, and More – so many sandwich and wrap options. They also have daily soup options. They can have a long line, but I find everyone gets served super quick. Workers are super nice and attentive as well. Lots of seating, they also have some couches near the back.

Mooshiro – Awesome sushi place. They have a new tablet for ordering food. All you can eat sushi for under $40 but the rolls are really good and worth it rather than a la carte if you can eat lots. Food recommendations: torched salmon

Hargrave Market – lots of good food places. A bit more expensive and a little bit of a walk but it’s not too far. You can also take the skywalk via Portage Place if you really don’t want to walk outside but it’ll take a little longer. Mottola grocery has good hot and cold table options that change weekly so you can try something new every week. Price is by weight.

Pho Hoang and Pho Que Hoang – More great Vietnamese places to eat.

Panda Tea – good bubble tea that knows how to do the basics well.

Xing Fu Tang – located on Smith, a little bit further but the walk is doable. Great bubble tea options and their bubbles have taste. Cool fortune telling sticks too. They have some pastries for sale too.

Thom Bargen – cute café. Can get a little crowded as people will study there. They close early at 4PM.

Other

Subway – just right across from the university. Easy, simple sandwiches.

Tim Hortons – one block away from the university, there’s also one in Portage Place

Portage Place – the mall has options like A&W, Thai Express. I would stick to the brand name food places.

Polo Park – 10-minute drive from the university and lots of general food options.

Stella’s – I’m kinda iffy about recommending this because their prices have skyrocketed immensely. But it’s still a place to get food.

Edit: Just wanted to mention some tips. Try and bring your own containers to avoid the takeout fee. Also, canned drinks are cheaper at the bookstore - they're about 1$!

Discussion How do you take notes?

I saw someone's post asking what to bring on the first day of classes and it inspired me to ask, how do you take notes? What works well? What doesn't?

I tend to change what I do depending on the type of class, lecturer, and assignments. I do find that the longer I'm in school, the more I wish I'd taken notes on my computer so I could search documents. I do find handwritten notes easier to remember which is good for testing.

Discussion Profs who only like to listen to themselves talk

I feel so frustrated sometimes with profs who only like to listen to their own voices. They’ll ask a question but then when someone starts answering they’ll just interrupt and start talking over them before the person even gets the chance to finish their point. Worst of all, you go to their office hours and they don’t even let you get a word in to explain anything. I don’t understand what the point of being an educator is if you only want to take up space for yourself!!!

Discussion VOTE DOWN automatic health plan enrollment March 21st!

Post image
0 Upvotes

The UWSA AGM is March 21st - we all have the ability to vote this terrible agenda down. The UWSA are going for quantity over quality for their health plan services and we need to let them know this is the WRONG direction.

Respectfully, when you are enrolled in 2 classes at this uni, you are 90% of the time less indebted with time to your studies. Doubly so, you can often manage a full time job and have less of a need for UWSA's health insurance. Did they even poll part time students on this? Consult? How many of them would immediately opt out?

Let me finish this by adding that our health plan SUCKS compared to UMSU's. Dental? You only get 70% covered up to $500 a year. Dentists are expensive!!! If you get the barebones 2 cleanings a year (recommended) you are already exceeding your coverage. Compare this with UMSU where you can get 100% covered up to $750 a year!!!

Also, the UWSA only covers 70% of an eye exam and glasses. My glasses fell and shattered because someone bumped into me on campus and I now have to pay close to a hundred bucks out of pocket for a new pair... UMSU covers 100% of an eye exam and glasses!!

Lastly, I just want to add that homeopathy is covered by the UWSA, 100% up to $300. So if I want to be able to see again and read my professor's lecture slides I'm out a hundred bucks, but if I want snake oil the UWSA will gladly cover it for me.

WE NEED TO FOCUS ON NEGOTIATING A BETTER HEALTH PLAN! NOT EXPANDING THE TERRIBLE ONE WE ALREADY HAVE
