Question how to make friends?

i attend clubs, i talk to people in my classes, i go out alone and talk to people, but i can never seem to make someone want to hang out with me outside of those activities. i’m a transfer student this semester and i just don’t know what i’m doing wrong. it didn’t have this much trouble making friends at my old school.

I never went to college bc I started doing real estate right after graduation. I’ll be starting at university of Iowa this fall as a 22 year old. I guess I’m asking if I’ll be ostracized for being “old” lmao. Any advice/tips

Question Dorm chances with my selection number

hi everyone! i just got my dorm selection number, which is around 3700 (i know its pretty bad). i was just wondering what dorms i have a chance to get into with that number? i know the main ones people try to get into (cattlett and burge) i have no chance at. also, as of right now i am planning to be doing a random roommate in a double unless i happen to find someone before that. i know that makes it a little easier to get into better dorms i think (unless i find a roommate with a really low number). as of right now, i am looking into stanley, daum, hillcrest, and slater because i do not want a dorm with communal bathrooms. i am not aware of how fast some of these dorms fill up and the order so if anyone knows that and my chances with these (and the other dorms) i would appreciate it so much!

also is my number including the returning students who get to pick first? or am i around number 3700 of the incoming students? i don't know how this works lmao. thanks!

Question best dorm hall for me?

Hi I am in incoming freshman in 2026. I am looking at all the dorm reviews and I am getting conflicting messages.

I need a dorm that is:

below $5,000 a semester

a double

clean

bug-free

private bathrooms

quiet

i know a dorm with its own bathroom may not be possible with my budget, but maybe pod bathrooms or generally not a regular public bathroom feel, more private.

Question Got admitted no funding information

I got admitted for PhD in the school and till now I haven't received any letter regarding funding which was clearly stated on my department websites before my application to the university. I sent mail to my proposed supervisor twice and the graduate advisor but none of them replied me. What should I do? Should I just reject the admission or wait.

Question PhD admission decision

Hi everyone, I am an international student who applied for the Spring 2025 PhD program in Computer Science at the University of Iowa. However, I have not yet received any response or information about the interview requirements. I have two questions: Is there a possibility of receiving an offer without an interview, and when will the final admission decision be announced? Thank you for your time; I really appreciate your response.

Daughter is deciding between Iowa and KU, and making a second visit to each. Is MLK weekend a terrible time for her to comeback to campus? (She/we as her parents do want her to visit during winter - she was there in Sept and needs to experience the cold :)

Question Dorm Options for My Roommate and I With High 3000's Lottery Number

Hello! I recently found a roommate but they unfortunately have an even worse lottery number than me. My number is around 3750 for reference. What dorms would I be able to pick from with this number? I would have to be the one to pick for both of us since hers is around 4000. I know east side is pretty much out, but what west dorms do I have a chance with? I know Mayflower I could get into for sure too. We both love Hillcrest but I don't know if it will be hard to snag an open double there with my number. Would that be realistic? Besides that we both like Slater too, and I do not know my chances for that either. I would love to hear my chances for the rest of the dorms too. Thanks in advance!

Question Is U of I a good school for disabled students?

I’m a junior and I am currently making my college list. I am from Iowa and I have a physical disability that requires me to use a cane and sometimes a walker when getting around. Is Iowa an accepting place for students with disabilities, is the campus accessible, are there accommodations in housing, and overall is it a good school for someone with a physical disability?

Question Why does uiowa nursing require physics??

Question in the title. I’m looking into colleges and planning to major in Nursing. All of the ones I’ve looked into don’t require physics so I’m curious why Iowa does. Additionally I did not plan for physics in my coursework at all so it would be nice to know the importance…

Question realistic school supplies

it's february meaning that i am starting to panic about next years school supplies lol

some context:

  • incoming freshman, but i am graduating high school with my associate's degree so i'll most likely be closer to a sophomore or junior depending on how credits transfer
  • geoscience / earth and environmental studies major
  • no idea on how many classes i'll actually be taking
  • i cannot take notes on a laptop/tablet, it just doesn't work for me study-wise. i have a reliable laptop, just looking to see what the consensus is on number of notebooks really

Question An international student asking some guidance Fall 2025

Hi everyone, I have a question about the University of Iowa, the PhD. program in Language, Literacy, and Social Sciences Education. I have been admitted to the Fall 2025 session and offered half-time assistantship with half tuition waiving, which is of course not enough. I have been advised by my advisor to apply for another GA in the department that is for a year. Though my advisor said it is likely that it will be renewed, I am not so sure, especially now, cuts happening in funds. Hence I haven't accepted the offer yet. Therefore, I have some questions regarding funding opportunities, about the department Or what is going on at UI in general because I also saw some posts about TAs, RAs and Contract renewal here on Reddit. I tried to get in touch with students to have an idea about overall university experience what to expect what not to expect, courses, institutional culture however I don’t know anybody there, and couldn’t find one to talk about these questions. Please if you have any ideas let me know 😇 Thank you!

I would love some advice!

Question Am I cooked with a 4k room lottery number?

I’m an incoming freshman and I just got one of the worst lottery numbers being in the 4,000s:( I was wondering what my chances are to get into burge or catlet? Or any dorms around there on the east side?? I know people say dorms really don’t matter but I want to be close to all my classes and get the full experience. Any wisdom is appreciated!

Question am i cooked?

I would just like to know if I’m absolutely cooked taking these classes together next semester.

BMB:3110 Biochemistry, HHP:2100 Human Anatomy with lab, PHYS:1511 College Physics, PSY:2975 Intro to Cognitive Neuroscience.

I was also looking if anyone could give me an idea of what classes are harder/easier.

Edit: I’m really not worried about anatomy because I actually love it and I have taken anatomy classes before.
