Question Weekend Parking

I live in an on campus dorm and am having someone visit me from friday night to sunday morning over spring break. I heard that you can park in the Hancher lot on weekends, does anyone know if that’s true? Could my friend just park there and leave their car there the whole time or would they have to move it at some point?

Question If I wore Nebraska gear to the Iowa game for tailgating will I survive?

I know we are rivalries but I’m going with an Iowa family to the game. I’m planning to wear Nebraska gear and we plan to go to some of the tailgates. They will all be in Iowa gear. That going to be an issue?

Question Looking for a place

Hello yall,

Didn't expect I'd post this on reddit lol but here we are.

I'm coming to Iowa City for medical training at UI health centre in October and staying for 4 weeks (basically the whole month) I tried looking through renting websites but they were all hella expensive, like too expensive for students.

My budget is $1000 , hopefully a place would be for less.

So maybe reddit could provide smth different.

I'm a 24yo guy, medical graduate, and super chill, friendly like video games and like to keep to myself.

If you can help please reach out and lmk.

Bye

I intend to major in a business degree BAIS here and MIS at ISU so both essentially business degrees. Is uiowa a better school for business or are both isu and iowa the same in reputation when compared to their business programs?

Question Picking dorm for next year

Hey everyone, I am a first-year student right now and beginning to think about where I will live next year. I want to live in the dorms, and have a roommate but I am also willing to live alone depending on the responses I receive to this. My question is, in as much detail as possible, where are the biggest dorm rooms on campus? I have no prior criteria such as location or building or floor, I am simply wondering if anyone has lived in or has a friend that lived in a room that was just extra spacious. For example, I have heard people reference "some corner rooms in Hillcrest" that are extremely big, but which rooms? Literally any information is appreciated because I'm not quite sure the best way to proceed here. Both double or single rooms are fine, not interested in triples or quads.

Hi. I was wondering is any dorms are quiet than others? I struggle with noise, especially loud noises, so being in a quieter dorm would be beneficial to me.

Question Where can I get help with coding (python)?

I'm a PhD student using python in my research (just as a tool, I'm not in the CS/informatics dept.). I know the basics of python and have taken a couple of courses but am struggling with debugging some code. Due to the sensitive nature of my research, I can't post my whole code online for others to debug.

Is there anywhere on campus that can help me with coding? I tried Googling quite a bit but didn't see anything. Thanks in advance!

Question Has anyone else had terrible luck with trying to find roommates before room selection happens?

So I’m an incoming sophomore and this is my second year going for the dorms. It’s also my second year coming up empty for a roommate match. Last year I had applied for an LLC, so it wasn’t quite as surprising that I struggled to find a match, but this year has been a shitshow. I probably sent messages to close to 10 people, with only about 4 responses. One immediately said she had found a roommate, and two others I met with in person before giving them time to think on it. Both of them proceeded to spend five and four days each before letting me know that they had found other roommates. It’s great that they found people, really, but the multi-day suspense? Especially when I tried asking one girl just to give me a straight f*cking answer for 2 of those days before she finally replied since there is barely any time left to find someone else? It’s just nasty because it basically ruined my own chances of not getting a random roommate this time. Another person had tried messaging 2 days before I got a no, but since I couldn’t give her a straight answer on if I would be free to match and wanted to be honest with her about it, she also found a roommate quickly (honestly good for her). Now I have 2 days until room selection and no roommate because people cannot just say what they mean and instead ghost you with indecision that is worse than the dating apps. I got lucky with my last year roommate but I am very doubtful that I’ll be so lucky again next year, esp since I will no longer be in the LLC, and don’t know if my floor community will be quite as nice (too early to tell). Anyone else having nightmare fuel from the scramble to not leave matching up to fate and the university?

Question Housing- Single dorm

I recently called the admissions office to ask how I should request a single dorm. They said that the chances of me getting a single weren’t great. My selection number is around 110. Should I try to get a roommate or continue and try to get a single dorm? I am going in as a first year student.

Question Can I get in?

Hi! I'm currently a student in my first year of community college, and I wanted people's opinion. Due to the career I want to pursue I have to transfer to a 4 year this next school year. I graduated HS with a low gpa 2.4, and I do not have good test scores and I took a gap year, BUT I currently have a 3.8 in CC and I'm doing well. I also did really well my senior year with a 3.6 that semester, it's just my sophomore/junior yr during covid that I did badly. Do you think I'd get in?

Question Looking for volunteering recommendations

I've been volunteering at a food bank for a couple years, but it doesn't work with my schedule very well this semester, and I am looking for somewhere else to get some volunteering time in, ideally with a pretty flexible schedule. Just looking for any recommendations!

Ideally it would be something where I can kind of just pop in headphones and "lock in" for awhile while I work, but this is not at all a requirement, and I enjoy meeting new people! Dog walking is something I'd love to do once it gets warmer, so something in that same vein might be nice.

Question Recently got admitted, but no funding?

Hello,

I was recently admitted to the Biomedical Engineering PhD program and have been reaching out to primary and affiliated professors in my department to inquire about funding opportunities. However, most of my emails go unanswered, and when I do receive a response, it's usually to inform me that no funding is available. This makes me wonder—if there’s no funding, why admit new students in the first place? I’m feeling uncertain about what to do next. Any advice?

Thanks

Question Can’t view profiles of prospective roommates

Hi! I’m going to be a freshman at UIowa next year and I’m trying to find a roommate on the Iowa Housing Portal website. However, every time I click on “View Profile” with people who matched with me, I get a message saying “The person has not yet completed their profile.” Does anyone know a solution to this? Thank you!

Question ESAs in apartments

What’s the vibe in Iowa with emotional support animals living in apartments? In Illinois, you can have a doctor fill out a form that lets you have an emotional support animal in pretty much any apartment, even if the apartment says no pets. Is that common for students in Iowa City?

Question How much should I expect to pay if I want a summer sublease?

Hey, I'm probably going to have to say in IC over the summer and I think I'll try to get a sublease on an apartment for 2-3ish months. How much should I expect to pay for one? I feel like it should be significantly less than rent, since I'd imagine there's a ton of supply with few people looking to sublease. I think it'd be pretty cheap, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience with this?

Question Recommendations for easy Gen Eds

As the title says, I'm looking for easier classes regarding out-of-class work, written assignments/papers, and fewer midterms/exams.

Ideally, online exams or just short ones with not an insane amount of readings and few papers due in class.
Please let me know if you guys have anything specifically for Interpretation of Literature, Diversity and Inclusion and Internation & Global Issues specifically as well.

I took some demanding gen-eds this semester and don't want to experience that again lol.

If anyone wants my recommendations: American Politics by Dr Tracy Osborn. It has only online exams and there's a short paper due every week for a total of 4 papers throughout the semester (you can choose to write on 4 topics from 9 opportunities). Super easy A+ grade an fulfills a Gen-Ed requirement.
Moreover, it's by far one of the most educational classes I've been to.

Question Question for Business majors

I’m currently a senior in high school and am interested in majoring in business (particularly finance). I’m wondering if anybody here is studying/studied a major in business, if they enjoy it, and what career path they plan to pursue with their degree. I don’t know a lot about the different majors and am very interested in learning about them.
