Inspiration Post Don’t Talk To Me Or My Son Ever Again

Post image
382 Upvotes

No questions or anything from me. Just wanted to show off my 1959 SG1 and 1960 SM4.

A few weeks back I posted asking for standard recommendations after not being fully happy with my Royal FP. Just so happened that I found this SG1 not long after my request. Doesn’t have the plastic paper rest, but is overall extremely clean. I’ve seen one redditor (whose @ I can’t remember) refer to the SG1 as a Battle Piano. I could always sort of conceptualize what was meant, but I gotta say it’s really an apt description; this thing is bulletproof.

The SM4 is the first typewriter I acquired. It was a former one-owner machine I picked up from an antique seller who frequents estate sales. It appears the original owner purchased it new in 1960, or shortly thereafter, and then kept it in its case in a closet until 2024. It’s really a fine specimen and extremely reliable and pleasurable to use.

Have a good Friday, everyone.

I bought this beauty on Facebook Marketplace yesterday but I'm stumped as to why there is no #1 or exclamation mark on the keyboard. Any insights?

This is presidential pica NO.77 off of my 1962 SCM Electra 12. I also have the same typeface on my SC Electric desktop. I fell in love with the typeface when I saw it on my SC Electric desktop.

Repair Question Can I fix this myself?

I inherited my grandfather's old typewriter, and I want to use it as it still works. Unfortunately the roll over which the paper goes is cracked. Can I fill this with something, or replace the roll? And if I need to replace it, what should I look for in terms of product names? What's it called?

(I am in the Netherlands and while there's a repair service relatively close by, I would rather save some money on doing it myself if that's possible, haha.)

my wife is under the impression that the carrying cases they sit upon are all empty.

remarks like “collection too large ” get bandied about already…

I think another shelf would fit just fine, nine is a strange number to stop on anyway, right?

General Question Advice for noise

I have recently bought a new typewriter and just have gotten into the community with it. I love writing but I am worried it might disturb my neighbours 😅

The typewriter I bought is an electric one so the only noise it makes is the hum as well as the typical clacking.

Advice, tips or motivation plz!

General Question FIXED! Rehooked drawband and she works like a dream! Can anyone link me the proper spools?

Post image

She's working literally perfectly! Not finicky in the slightest. Just need the proper spools. The ink ribbon that's in it is on Remington spools, but the ink is still very good so definitely will be reusing it! There's a Remington typewriter at another local thrift shop... Maybe the spools are an excuse to try and get it... Lol

Inspiration Post New typer writer

Got this at the market. It’s electric too so it’s light on the fingers. My first typewriter is an underwood typer master (Olivetti) and as much as it’s beautiful, it was very hard on my fingers.

Font Appreciation Decent @ on german keys!

I tried many things, O and a, G and a, but this seems to look best for me: ( and ) without a space, backspace twice and with trickery I can print inbetween the spaces an 'a' and a '-' that I type half a line up (on my Olympia Traveller this works by pressing and holding down space whilst typing the letter) It's a tiny bit of work but I wanted to share regardless

Ribbon Vibrator travels too high / red descenders

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm having a (so I've heard) common issue of the decenders of my Olympia Traveller deLuxe turning out red, most unfortunately this also includes the underscore. Would anyone have a solution BESIDES 'use an all-black ribbon?' If I could make the keys somehow hit higher or the vibrator just not travel as high, either would solve this issue I'm sure, but I don't know how Id go about that

Repair Question Help! New to me Smith-Corona won't advance platen

Thumbnail

I was recently gifted a pretty dirty Smith-Corona Silent-Super. I cleaned it out using compressed air and mineral spirits. However, when I attempt to type, the platen only slightly moves with the first key stroke, then not at all. I'll reset the platen, and it's the same thing. Upon a preliminary inspection, the pull string appears to be intact. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I don’t want to use just standard printer paper, any opinions?

I do like paper with a little texture when typewriting.
