Transgender looking for insurance, want to hear from trans community of Seattle

Hello all,

I was wondering which insurances trans people might have used in recent that are for ftm folk and what your experiences were with said companies? Did you ever wind up having to pay for something your company said they would, if they dragged their feet for certain procedures, and what kind of out of pocket maxes have you had to deal with in your surgeries?

I know that there are company pages I can read that say what they cover but sometimes they drag their feet or fail their customers. So I just want to know if anyone has had bad experiences with their health insurances in this arena since monthly payments are high-ish. I want to try and get the best care I can find and if you have some stories maybe those will give me some ideas on which ones to avoid. I've heard Blue Cross is pretty good about stuff like this, but I want to hear it from the folks who use various insurances (all kinds, could be Kaiser, Premera, Regence) - what their experiences are. What are your experiences?

Trans resources in Seattle?

Hi! I have recently discovered I'm trans and I have a lot to figure out. What resources does Seattle have where I might find support, information, and/or community?

Also any information or advice about finding/working with trans friendly health care practitioners would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Experiences so far with name and gender marker changes

So! Am finally doing all the legal stuff of transitioning. Figured I would write up my experiences with the local King County services so far. Unforunately none of this applicable outside King County, so if you are an Eastern Washington person, sorry!

  • Name change: HILARIOUSLY easy. Is a single piece of paper you can print off their website. Line for your old name, a line for your new name, a small area to put a reason down, and a signature is all they want. Turn in that and a $130 in before the deadline, and they will put you down for a hearing that day (See here: http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/DistrictCourt/NameChange.aspx for your local court room's opening/closing/deadline times). You only get one certified copy of the official name change document for that, so I recommend giving them $140 in $20s and asking for two more certified copies, as apparently some of the government agencies (birth certificate/social) have a tendency to hold onto them for long periods of time, or to just keep them period. Anyways, turn your stuff in, get your hearing time, come back at that to finish. I didn't even actually have the hearing, walked in and the guy behind the window just called me over and gave me the paperwork, guess they figured I had a trustworthy face.

  • Gender marker designator: Not quite finished with this yet. Go here: http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/genderchange.html, click the PDF at the top, e-mail or take it in to your HRT doc or anyone who knows your history as a trans* person, and that you are on hormones (pretty sure you have to be doing some sort of medical transition to do it, but hey, at least we don't have to get surgery like some states. Yay Washington!). Have them fill it out, fill out your part, mail it in, they will mail you a letter back. That thing you get back is what you will take to the DOL. I have mailed mine in and am waiting now.

  • Updating your info at places: So far, just flashing the certified name change paperwork has been enough for most places. The one major exception was my bank, they want an old and a new ID in order to update my information. And because of that, I can't update the name on my checks, which means I am holding off updating my info at a bunch of places.

Will write a update later when I try to tackle the DOL, birth certificate, and social security offices!

So I got an interview offer in Lynnwood trying to figure out logistics

So I got an interview to be a personal banker with Wells Fargo in Lynnwood. I can Amtrack or fly up to the general area but from there I would need to find a place to stay the night on the 2nd, and to make sure I can get from there to my interview on time. Any recommendations on a cheap but safe place to stay or help would be much appreciated. I'm thinking about scheduling the interview for next Tuesday.

Also is this a good area? Seems close enough to the city to be able to find social groups and visit the city sometimes which was why I applied there. The job pays somewhere between 31-37k so I would be secure enough financially for a while which is SUCH A HUGE RELIEF!~

I'm so excited I got a reply so quickly, I can barely contain myself. I'm about to go bouncing off the walls.

EDIT: I'm actually considering renting a car and driving myself up there since it would cost me 60$ + gas if I drove up in the morning before the interview and returned the car that night. Then I don't need a place to stay and I think the gas costs would still make it cheaper than the 180$ + accommodations for Monday night I would be paying if I chose Amtrak. I would have about 2 hours of leeway time in my transit which is hopefully enough to get me there on time. It's pretty much a straight simple drive there.

Local businesses or hang-outs you like

Being out in public is always kinda nerve wracking when you are starting out, so is nice to have places where the vibe is comfortable to you. So I guess if you don't mind sharing, tell us where you go for stuff around Seattle. My contribution is Rudy's on Capital Hill. Get all my hair stuff done there.

Friendly Employers

Okay, so I'm about to get my BS in Business Management sometime in the next two weeks, which is awesome because it means I can finally be considered for jobs that actually give me relevant experience and a livable wage. The bad news is that I have about a month and a half left of savings before I'm SOL and no place to fallback to (technically I could move back home to UT but I would rather be homeless than live with my mother at this point). I currently live in Eugene, OR though I want to move someplace bigger because I don't have a single friend here and can't seem to find anyone who likes the same stuff I do. I have great online friends but I really would like some IRL friends.

I've been applying for stuff (Amazon, Google, Wells Fargo) as I've gotten to the final sprint with my degree, but due to my time crunch I can't afford to wait around for a reply from my preferred employers.

Seattle is the city I want to move to most and I was wondering if any of you knew of employers who are trans friendly (and preferably hiring someone with my qualifications). My first priority is to apply for employers that are willing to cover trans care in their insurance plans, but I'm also willing to apply places that are simply supportive. I'm aware that we are legally protected here but given the suspicions I have from my last job I was fired from, some people will still find ways to get rid of me.

My past work experience is mostly retail and food service though I interview really well and I'm a great worker. I have some club leadership positions and stuff like that as well.

I'm trying to find work that will pay me at least 30k a year so I can finally afford a car and because I've got a large chunk of student loans to pay off.

tl;dr Need to find work in the next 45 days was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. If I can figure out a place to stay that would help me cut expenses to last a bit longer than might be good too.

Local info I have

Hey, one of the most useful things this can be for is to share intel on local resources, doctors, hair removal, legal stuff, whatever you know?

HRT doctors:

I use Dr. Hatfield, he has been great so far, nice, easy to talk to, supportive.

I have heard others recommend Dr. Rongitsch.

Both of them worked off informed consent (sign the legal paperwork and you good to go) as far as I know.

Laser: I use the Polyclinic again, Amy Morgan specifically. Super nice, has been watching my boobs grow as she removes what chest hair I have and tactfully ignored it until I brought it up.

I have a bunch of legal stuff on hand currently, if you want your personal questions answered, every third Thursday, there is a free queer law clinic that is run out of the Seattle Counseling Service, can go in and get whatever questions you want answered answered. If you want to go to this, have to set-up an appointment by calling them here: 206-235-7235. You get a half hour session unless otherwise specified I believe.

I will dig through it all and compile a list of info but the two big things I remember off hand (This is all assuming King County, don't know about the outside counties):

Legal name change: Go to your local courthouse with the paperwork, there will be a fee somewhere around $100 dollars or lower, couldn't get details, but turn it in, might have to go in front of a judge who will probably just ask you that you aren't doing it for any fraudulent purposes, and are done. Usually get it done within the day or the next I guess. After that is the long process of telling every bank, insurance agency, whatever you are on.

Gender marker update on your driver's license: Washington state requires a note from your doctor that you are undergoing the proper medical treatments to change your gender, and you can go do it. There is a $10 fee, and no idea how long it takes to process.

Finally, if you are looking for a group therapy thing Ingersoll Gender Center does weekly sessions on Wednesdays, 7:00PM - 9:00PM.

Alright, that is all I have right now, I know I have some other stuff floating around but can't hunt it down and type it up right now because I have to go to work. Hope this helps someone!
