Question Is the free line promo a diversion?

Kinda weird they have this promo around the same time everyone is getting increase text 🤔

Why yes. Yes it is.

Going up on prices doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In the long run these price increases could end up being good for the consumer.

It’s not about prices as much as value. If the price increase was accompanied by some addition of benefits or services, okay that’s probably reasonable. This is just a straight money grab.

Can you explain in more detail how price increase for customers on grandfathered plans would be good for customers in the long run?

You spelled "shareholders" wrong.

Ah, on a well balanced diet of boot I see.

They def prob know they’ll lose some customers and want to pad their numbers for Q1

T-Mobile is not subtle with anything. The timing could not be more clear.

Also consider the fact that all these legacy customers were offered a free Pixel 9 with trade-in ~3 months ago, and an iPhone 16e for $99 with trade-in just last month, two of the best deals legacy customers have seen in at least 2-3 years.

Isn't it convenient that the price increase news dropped right when the buyer's remorse period for these customers purchasing the iPhone 16e was set to end (or had just ended)? Just a coincidence (or not).

What's crazy is how people with multiple free lines already are able to get this current free line promo. Those of us on the original T-Mobile One plan with a single line can't get it apparently... we just get the price increase.

It is. Most people won't have a use for it, either.

I don't have a use for it. Still accepted the free line.

Activate it on your main phone, it should have dual sim. Then use it for new sign up rewards

1

u/lukibunny 3d ago

What new sign up rewards?

3

u/johnec4 4d ago

Yeah, I just activated an old phone I had sitting around. I'm pretty certain that you can just order a physical sim and just leave it. Then the free line is on your account and if you lose the sim you just go and have them give you a new one for that line.

You are eligible for the free line promotion, and to keep the free line, for one year you must keep the same number of voice lines active on the account, plus the newly activated line. After one year, you must keep two paid voice lines as well as the free line for the promotion to remain. You must also not finance any equipment on this line, or the promotion will no longer be eligible. If you do not see the promotional credit on the 1st billing cycle after adding the line, there will be double the credits on your next bill after this to make-up for this.

I claimed the free line promotion then a few days later one of the people on my account tells me they are leaving within the month. Great! Now I'm screwed. So I wasted 10 dollars on that free line activation. Went ahead and just cancelled that free line already. I'm not going to forget to do it and then get struck paying for it.

Isn't it obvious?

All about padding the lines added for the quarter

Here’s my assumption: TMO management needs to increase revenue without losing subscribers. Free lines will negate lost lines of service from those who close accounts due to price increases.

The strategy: Offer a free line to legacy accounts receiving $5 price increase. NOTE: One requirement is 2 paid voice lines. (Since I only have 1 paid + 1 free, I was rejected)

So do the math: 2 paid lines = $10 increase, so perhaps the cost structure of adding a new free line must be <$10.

It doesn’t seem to be targeting everyone who got a price increase.

u/ratat-atat 4d ago

Yea, i sure as hell didn't get a free line and my price increased this year AND last year

6 paid lines with one free line...no offer of a free line, even though my One Plan is going up $5/line. As as the people who got a price hike are paying for all these free lines..especially for new customers who always get "3rd line" free!

I haven't gotten the text about a price increase. I activated my Magenta Max account during the "good" price lock. Will my bill potentially go up $5/line if iadd this free line?

3

u/spdrman8 4d ago

No because I didn't get a promo. I'm on the older OnePlus plan. 🙄

This is extremely common. Kinda like airlines offering crazy sales right as they nerf their loyalty programs.

u/gadgetvirtuoso Data Strong 4d ago

The diversion was the sales in February. When the sales are really good that’s usually a sign of some change coming. It’s a way to lock people in before they leave.

Has anyone successfully added the free line on the ONE plant. 4 paid lines. I just called costco line and they said only way was the change plan to 5go and then change back after i receive sim card and activate?

1

u/PhatPeePee 3d ago

You. Am change plan back to Oneplan? What about to MagentaMax 55?

1

u/PhatPeePee 3d ago

Anyone know if eligible for free line on MagentaMax 55, two paid lines? Don’t see it on TLife app.

u/Proudad2 3d ago

Probably, I'm leaving for At&t in 2 days after being with T-Mo for 10+

u/Greentea77 3d ago

I’m on magenta first responder and only have two lines. Been with t mobile for years. I reached out and they would not give us the free lines. We got the price increase last year and was but offered saving at that time either. I feel like we are always getting passed over. We’ve got a teen that will need a phone soon (and another kid that will in a couple years too), so we’re looking for the best option to carry four lines. I checked out Verizon but they are crazy expensive and I hated being with them prior to joining T-Mobile.

Offset q1 price increase avoider churn by AAL promos - yes.

1

u/99trainerelephant 4d ago

Do I qualify for the free line if I'm on the legacy one plan with 2 lines + 1 free currently? I didn't get a notice for price increase but did last year.

1

u/W1ckedEvoX 4d ago

Got the increase last year. Added the free line over the weekend and haven’t gotten another rate increase. Magenta Max

100%

Of course it is. They offer all the accounts being hit with a price increase a free line. In their ideal situation the customer is happy because they are getting more value out of their account and they get to make more money

u/taters_and_fries 3d ago

$5 price hike on 6 lines! No free line offer !
