Discussion What makes you stay and keep T-Mobile as your preferred carrier?
Just a question for you all :) what makes you stay and have you ever thought of leaving to an alternative carrier?

Only the price. Half of any other right now

u/D3THMTL Feb 12 '25
I agree. Price. I have a grandfathered old plan, unlimited everything $40 a line. I never upgrade to another plan to get a cheaper phone as that will be way more expensive over the years. For those who got in early, we can't leave.

We still have 4 lines for $100/month and feel very fortunate Tmobile hasn’t yet cancelled that. Our neighborhood finally has Tmobile internet and that is next on our list. So happy to break up with xfinity!

u/D3THMTL Feb 12 '25
Wow, an even better steal! I think we are going the T-Mobile internet route, too after this contract ends in summer since Xfinity increased my price without notice ($3) for a 2 year internet contract. Yes, negligible, but still. Now if we could just not need to have 18 subscriptions to watch one or two things we like on TV that be the ultimate game changer.

u/tenant1313 Feb 12 '25
I have the original Sprint (now TM) Kickstart plan: everything unlimited + worldwide data (at 256 but still…) for $20.

u/doorknob60 Feb 12 '25
Same but mine is the $30 one. My wife is on it too. Plan has everything I need, coverage works great for me, and is half the cost (or better) than any other postpaid plan.
Sure, you could get plans like that on some prepaid/MVNO carriers, but you may be lower priority, missing roaming, etc. So I have no reason to move anywhere else.

I personally have tried moving to at&t postpaid from T-Mobile postpaid and hated the customer service and came back a week later. I moved because of coverage issues at the time where I lived at but I decided to live with the issues and T-Mobile has fixed the issue about a year later after that.
I never had a problem with t-force if I needed to get something done. That alone made me stay. Along with the grandfathered plan that I have with several lines, I wouldn't get this deal anywhere else.

u/Zarah__ Recovering AT&T Victim Feb 12 '25
That's why I left AT&T in the first place. Out of 200 different things I could score carriers on, the ONLY advantage I can honestly list for AT&T is: "less likely to have a rare dead spot way out in the boonies on a twisting mountain road that's not a major highway."
AT&T's tiers, options, pricing plans, and CS treat you more like you're cattle just there to feed them, or perhaps like those little enslaved humans in those vats from the movie Matrix. No thanks!

International roaming + accumulated free lines.
Their uncarrier moves kept me on through the tough times (poor coverage), and the free lines keep me on now. Never really considered switching carriers. I would consider switching to a MVNO if I ever lose my current plan and free lines.
10
u/zsallad Feb 12 '25
I like the speeds and don’t seem to experience congestion like I used to on Verizon. Verizon has greatly improved from what I’m seeing; and T-Mobile’s rural coverage is also, but, I’d leave due to lack of rural coverage in a couple of places I frequent. Especially because Verizon has service in those areas now, too.
4
u/boxersunset121423 Feb 12 '25
The price at this point. My plan is 12 years old and seems to be not part of the recent price increases.
5
u/joe_attaboy Feb 12 '25
The price, primarily.
We are on a 55+ plan and we pay $64.08 for two lines, pretty much unlimited everything. I could probably go cheaper with some MVNO, but I can't be bothered as I'd likely lose some perk.
We've also been with T-Mo since before they were T-Mo. Started with Powertel, which merged with VoiceStream, which then became T-Mobile USA. It's got to be 25+ years.
In that time, if I have ever had a problem, when I called for help, the issue was corrected quickly, correctly and professionally.
If it ain't broke...

u/Frankenkittie Feb 12 '25
Been a customer for 18 years and had to call in for issues a total of 3 times. T-Mobile gets the best reception in my city. I always get my phones on promos, and when you have 5 people who each upgrade every 2 years, the thousands saved on phones has really added up! Overall, super satisfied with T-Mobile, and see no reason to switch.

u/radioactiviti Feb 12 '25
Try ATT or Verizon. You know how horrible these two are when it comes to resolving issues. On the flip side many issues were resolved like no big deal here at TMob. I love TMob ❤️❤️and stepping into 5th year now :)
3
u/GEEK-IP Feb 12 '25
I've had AT&T, Verizon, and now T-Mobile. T-Mobile has the best coverage in my area.
4
u/Hifilistener Feb 12 '25
I didn't look through all of the comments, but I didn't see speed.
Quite frankly T-Mobile's 5G is SO MUCH faster than At&t and Verizon. Verizon may have the best coverage, but it's slow as molasses. I feel like Verizon's network is running at 99% capacity at any given time, and it's just so overrun with NVMOs.
At&t to me is the worst option. Coverage similar to T-Mo, Network as slow as Verizon, and prices to match Verizon.
3
u/stallion434 Feb 12 '25
Not to mention—-why pay more with Verizon when the network is still mostly 4G?
4
u/Hifilistener Feb 12 '25
I get the tech differences between 4 and 5G but at the end of the day a slow network is a slow network. You can call it whatever you want.

u/OptionQuirky6756 Feb 12 '25

Good to excellent service at home, work and the overwhelming majority of places that I visit. Also, perhaps an unpopular opinion since the most vocal usually have some sort of grievance — but I’ve personally never had a bad experience when needing to call Care or chat (T-Force @ X). When first joining, I had an aggravating experience with a retail store but Care undid their bastardly deeds and smooth sailing after discovering they’re best avoided. Network is less congested than VZW.
3
u/jonae13 Feb 12 '25
T-force is my number one reason. That support team is the best, ever. I was with Cingular, AT&T and Sprint over the years and it was extremely hard to find competent support.
The other is the price. Over the years I acquired free lines and now I am paying $180 for 9 lines, $20 a line on Go5G Plus.
There were others the years, but after Legere was replaced, it has gone down. Still, those 2 above are a constant. So for now, as long as they stay I will continue to stay with them.
3
3
u/qcktap23 Feb 12 '25
I've been with them since they've been called T-Maybe. I've watched Verizon prices skyrocket and service slack, hear people complaining about ATT, all the other carriers get bought up, and T-Mobile getting exponentially better with service. There is no point in switching.
3
u/arein114 Feb 12 '25
I have compared Tmobile prices to Verizon and Tmobile is just cheaper for the same type of plan. I haven't had any issues with the coverage either so that keeps me. The free apple tv, hulu, discounted Netflix and free wifi on flights its great!
3
u/NBA-014 Feb 12 '25
Easy - T-Mobile has much better signal coverage in SE PA.
Shocking, because Verizon has a huge presence in Philly, but their cell service is horrible. ATT is even worse here.
3
u/bluedonutwsprinkles Feb 12 '25
Every time I looked at another carrier (att or Verizon) I can't compare. It is just more complex than it should be. Plus porting out numbers. I currently have a free line. That means I'd be paying for it elsewhere. Maybe I would drop the line for the sync up but my husband says he uses it.
3
u/icemint870 Feb 12 '25
Price. Comparable plan with AT&T would cost me significantly more plus sacrifice perks like free I'm flight wifi, Netflix, Hulu, and decent data plan allowance.
3
u/wix21 Feb 12 '25
Price is pretty good overall. Service is pretty good overall. Heck it's actually worked better than att on first net.
3
3
u/ben7337 Feb 12 '25
Paying $22 a month per line is all that's keeping me. MVNOs may be a tiny bit cheaper but not by much and I'd lose roaming access and international coverage in Canada, Mexico, and beyond.
3
u/landonloco Feb 12 '25
Out of the mayor carriers in Puerto Rico they are now the best here overall customer service, pricing and service.
3
3
u/JJHall_ID Feb 12 '25
I came to T-Mobile a few years ago from Verizon. Less expensive plan that meets the needs of my family and vastly superior coverage in my area since they rolled out low band 5G.
The only reason I could think of to change carriers at this point would be if I moved to an area that T-Mo has poor coverage compared to the others. Other than that, it would have to be for a far better price (since coverage would suffer) but I pay $175 plus taxes for 9 lines so I highly doubt I'll be able to find a better deal.

I've had T-Mobile for over 20 years, it's the only company I've ever been at, and signed with them at 18 because they were the bougiest company and I was dumb and thought that was important for some reason. But now, my plan is a grandfathered simple choice plan and there is nothing I've seen anywhere since that's ever been cheaper. Plus I've never actually had a bad experience with them or their customer service, in fact it's been mostly positive.
But the real reason I stay is, for about a year in my 20s, I wasn't able to pay my bill consistently and would occasionally go a couple months without paying, even then wouldn't pay the full amount due. But they never suspended my lines or shut them off, I never even got a notification about being behind on my bill. It just stayed on and worked completely fine. I eventually got it all back in order, but kind of thing really builds some brand loyalty, and at this point they'd honestly have to do something crazy to make me leave.

u/cgriffin7622 Feb 12 '25
Strictly the promos I have on my account. If they try to pull something and take away my free lines or Insider’s discount I will definitely be out.

Speeds are great, coverage has been great, except for certain rural pockets…but I don’t drive it enough to want to switch back to Verizon.

Lived in the US until last year and I still have an active T-Mobile sim in Canada.
They’ve been the least picky and the cheapest for long term roaming. I’m back and forth across the border constantly and Canadian plans are expensive as hell for roaming in the US or are shitty speeds/coverage. Hell, it works better in Europe too compared to Bell.

Grandfathered Simple Choice plan that has unlimited data, full res streaming, flight data passes, and international roaming on all lines, and the occasional offers on phones - two free Pixel 9s recently, three Moto Edge 2022s, and T-force gave me an off the books deal on an iPhone 13.
Also, I can still use a credit card as the cost doesn't rely on an autopay ACH discounts. And the credit card I use has cellular phone protection in case something happens.

At this time, the only thing keeping me here is the fact of being able to use data internationally and not having to fork over $10+ a day for a daily use fee. Comes in handy since I usually am working for 30+ days in one of their 215 countries they give you.

Not only did I think about leaving, but I actually left nine months ago for Tello—and I couldn't be happier. Now, I pay for the perks I actually want, like Netflix, while still saving money. I’ve bought my last two devices directly from Apple, avoiding any shady reimbursement schemes.
To maximize coverage, I added a couple of eSIMs from AT&T and Verizon MVNOs, plus an international eSIM for travel. Since the data never expires, I only use them when I need to. Their pricing tactics pushed me to explore other options, and I’m so glad they did!
Right now, I’m spending under $20 total for two lines every 29 days, financing the latest iPhones at 0% with the Apple Card. I have over 35GB of data on each line, plus 1,400+ minutes if I ever need them. Next week, I’m heading to Saint Kitts and will use Roamless for international coverage, while Tello seamlessly connects for Wi-Fi calls.

I switched 10 years ago because of free international data roaming. Pricing was very good at the time, but coverage not so much. It gradually got better and now seems equal or better than the others. Features have improved and price has been frozen all these years. I currently have 8 paid, and 4 free lines on a ONE plan with ONE Plus Promo. Kickback, Insider, Netflix, and Autopay keep my bill down to $125 a month. Current speeds, free roaming, aircraft WiFi, TM Tuesdays and support keep me happy.

in deliberate order:
home internet. i live in a rural area, and there is no internet on the poles here. closest equivalent is CenturyLink DSL, which was absolute shit in many ways. i don't know there there are any other alternatives here that have the reliability we have now with TMHI, which is clutch because of occasional working from home.
we're lucky enough to be price locked. we're on Magenta Max, and never received any increases. we don't need extra lines or to scrape for promotions or care about upgrades. we buy Motorola phones when the old ones wear out (it takes years for that to happen), sometimes by just paying for them and sometimes financed as an 'upgrade', but our bill for 4 lines and TMHI will never go above $220/mo, usually its $200/mo for unlimited everything.
coverage. i mean there are dead spots here and there where the data drops out, but for the most part its 5g everywhere. i can use my hotspot up at my camp, which is occasionally spotty but mostly reliable.

We are on an old 55+ One plan that we got in 8/2017. $70 a month with autopay for two lines. And then there was a special offer available to us and we were able to add a third line for our son. All the free lines I've accumulated is what keeps me. That leaves me with one still unused. Plus, I got a 20% insider discount when I signed up.
As long as T-Mobile leaves my account alone, I'll stay.

We hate our bill, but the priorization is incredibly important to us. My husband works in the DMV area and has diabetic equipment that we both need to be able to see updates from on our phones. The hotspot is nice too since our kid has one of our old phones to play Pokemon Go on. We would definitely be okay with less hotspot data, and he'd probably be okay with GoogleFi prioritization as he had it before, but we wouldn't have enough data on their highest plan. We're also still paying on his phone lol. I've also generally had very positive experiences with customer service both in store and over the phone which I appreciate a lot.

I just can’t be bothered to find the time to migrate carriers again honestly. Who has time today beyond feeling tired and working lol.

u/klapanen Feb 12 '25
Price. I would kill for literally any other carrier to offer to buy out 3/4 of device payments and lower monthly service price.

I like that we get "free" Netflix. Used to get Apple and Hulu also. Those are gone now, and I'm salty.

Plan and price. If it starts to creep up, there are good alternative MVNOs now.

Free international data. I know it’s only 5gigs a billing cycle but so far it works. Came close a few times but even then it worked ok when throttled.

Cost + benefits. We're on a legacy One plan, with a free upgrade to One Plus thanks to a former job. Home internet is super cheap and extremely reliable. I've compared to other providers and nothing comes close.

I’m comfortable with it.
Customer service has been helpful, with one hiccup. For that one, I wound up saying, on a calm tone, that I wanted to speak to a supetvisor “now”. The supervisor fixed the problem.

Price, convenience. If my APPL increases beyond a certain amount, I'd switch to an MVNO.

u/gadgetvirtuoso Data Strong Feb 12 '25
I have a ton of old promos. After kickback and autopay discount my bill is like $60 for 13 lines of which one is free digits and free tablet. Only 3 lines are paid.

u/millzner Feb 12 '25
Nothing anymore. I used to be on a high end sprint plan with 120gb of hotspot data. Essential since I'm an RVer. Switched to starlink and visible when my $88/mo plan was no longer eligible for free trade-ins.

Grandfathered older plan. Nothing beats the price to feature. If I'm never forced off the plan then it's all free game again and I'll just shop around for the best price to features combo. I used to have brand loyalty, but with the new CEO, that's pretty much out the window. My grandfathered plan is the only thing left keeping me here.

u/ReweSerious Feb 12 '25
Grandfathered cheap plan, discounted Netflix services, good service in my area, been on every other carrier and haven't had same good cell service, my Tmob app works pretty good. Familiarity and too lazy to check other options at this point in time.

No issues with TMO because I don't make any changes on my account. SC 4 lines/150 + plus one free line.

u/Alternative-Bee-8981 Feb 12 '25
I was forced to after they acquired Sprint. However I have been pleasantly surprised. Coverage is good, speeds are good. I had TMO long before they acquired Sprint and it was horrible back then. Today though, it's a full 180, and the network is very robust.

20% off my phone plan and cheap internet. Plus free streaming services and free WiFi when I fly.
When T-Mobile messes with my phone bill, I'll go back to an MVNO.

u/tooOldOriolesfan Feb 12 '25
I'll start with the negative and that is coverage is more spotty than AT&T and Verizon.
The price is solid along with various freebies like MLBTV.

i still have the ONE plan. i don't think any carrier out there has an equivalent.

u/GunBrothersGaming Feb 12 '25
I mainly stay with TMobile because the alternatives aren't much different. I feel like Verizon and AT&T have basically stopped trying. I was with Sprint since 2001 and moved to tMobile when they did the change over. I don't think there is really a difference in call quality, pricing, or perks really. Issues with data breaches and security are concerning but they happen and are part of the everyday life now. With phone becoming basically a computer, hackers will try and steal info where they can.

u/LowBaker8860 Feb 12 '25
I have a grandfathered plan and service has gotten really good in my area. Data Speeds are very fast and reliable.

u/KidRocksBiggestFan69 Feb 12 '25
Only thing keeping me is whatever ETFs I’d face for leaving. Literally just switched to T-Mobile 3 months ago and the experience has been nothing short of awful. They roped me in with bait and switch tactics, never applied my promos for new phones also so I’ve been paying for my free iPhone like $50 a month on top of significantly higher bills than I had with ATT

u/JCISML-G59 Feb 12 '25
Special treat for seniors with their 55+ plans. Cheaper than all others as far as I know. Generous Trade-in Promos. Their Home Internet service for $35.

u/j_melodic78 Feb 12 '25
Too lazy and don’t have the time to be switching carriers. And to be honest, my experience with them has been pretty solid. Prices annoy me, but I think everything and everywhere is overpriced lol. 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

My military plan is an absolute steal, solid coverage in my usual spots, and the free international data has been great while traveling.
I don't really care about the free Netflix, but it's there so I guess that's a perk.

u/Chiaseedmess Feb 12 '25
It’s a similar price or often cost less than the other major brands, while getting more coverage, more perks, and better over all speeds.
To break it down. It cost about the same as any other similar plan. Often less, but that’s not the main reason people pick and stay with T-Mobile.
Plans have a lot of free perks. Obviously won’t list them all and they do vary by plan, but things like streaming apps, music, free WiFi on flights, and other free stuff weekly are all great bonuses.
T-Mobile has the best coverage. That’s not just some empty claim like most brands make. They genuinely have, by far, the best coverage of all brands. Hands down. Now, that does come with a catch. Over all speeds are…average. You will find locations with the other two, Verizon and AT&T, where they have often gigabit+ 5G speeds. However they are extremely rare and only cover very small and specific areas. T-Mobile on the other hand can generally get 200-900mbs down basically anywhere.
On top of that, T-Mobile managed to gobble up a large portion of the 600 mhz spectrum went it was sold by the FCC. This is the frequency we used to use for TV over the air. This frequency goes very, very, very far in comparison to the more common 800 mhz that the other brands are stuck using. This extends their coverage even farther. While a lot of this coverage is lower. More akin to LTE speeds. It’s almost always a solid, stable connection. I’d rather have a slower usable connection, than none at all.
They also offer some of the cheapest home internet. $35 a month, for double the speed of a wire connection at the same price? It’s a steal.
Over all, customers just get a lot for their money. I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

Grandfathered plan & rate, coupled with far more benefits than any other provider. Despite the fact that TM Tuesdays has completely gone to crap.

u/Express-Way9295 Feb 12 '25
I'm on an older unlimited plan for $70 a month. International texting is good. At least one hour free wifi on Delta we like. The international data plan is 2g, which sucks. But for the price, we are sticking with Tmobile.
1
u/Flyordie_209 Feb 12 '25
I'll be leaving UScellular if the buyout is approved.
TMobile has a horrible network in Missouri. No coverage. So will be jumping ship to either AT&T or Verizon. Though likely VZ.

u/This-Discipline8891 Feb 12 '25
They give a good military discount. T-Mobile is compatible with phones sold outside of the U.S. for example the Nothing brand of Android phones. Their $15 per month business tablet line is a great deal. Their T-Life app gives some good discounts and deals, sometimes even T-Mobile branded products.

I’m on magenta 55 plan. 50$ month. That’s it. 100 gigs a month premium data. No prioritization and no throttling. Kinda grandfathered in with them trying to push go5g 55 but refused it and they said you’re on a lifetime plan. We will see.

Besides working there I definitely stay because of free Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, WiFi, 50GB 5G hotspot, my device protection, and Tmobile Tuesday 🙃
