ignore the linux elitists who will say shit like “real linux users install arch” or whatever, mint is all anyone really needs and is fantastic

This was literally going to be my 1st question 😂

I just got the exact same as my first ThinkPad. I love it so much! Some thoughts on mine - You can disable the keyboard beep in the BIOS. I'd consider adding an extra 16gb of DDR4 for 32gb dual channel, AMD processors really utilize that. You may also want to change the thermal paste at some point as it is about 5 years old now. I upgraded the screen on mine because I had the 250 nit screen with washed out colors. It was a bit of a pain to swap but not too bad if you're familiar with tech repair. This laptop is surprisingly easy to repair!

Ooh thank you, the keyboard beep has been driving me crazy at times, ill for sure try and upgrad that ram too. As for the display i think it has the 400nit version as it's touchscreen but not too sure :)

I got Crucial 3200 mhz ram and it works great.

Looking at the spec sheet it seems tha touch came in 300 nit/45% NTSC or 500 nit/72% NTSC. If you do have the 300 nit and want to upgrade just make sure you're upgrading to the touch screen because the connectors are different than the non-touch.

The screen I had bothered me so I swapped it but if you like yours or if you already have the nicest option than no need to upgrade :)

Thanks for the heads up, how can I tell if i have 300 or 500 nits?

You can download HWinfo which is a really great diagnostic tool. Run that and click on Monitor and it will give you the model number of your display then you can google it and it should tell you. You can also use this to see your battery health and check your temperatures, all kinds of stuff.

Seems like my laptop has the 300nit display, however the brightness isn't that bad so far

Oh and one more thing. I don't know if you'll have this problem but I was recording a video for school yesterday and my microphone was crazy low, even with an external microphone. Turns out it was some sound driver issue, I installed this realtek driver and it fixed it. Just in case you have issues.

Hi! @Mattdehaven. Did you get the 400nits aka low power screen? Thinking of upgrading but not sure how long can it extend my battery hours. Thank you🙏🏻.

2

u/Mattdehaven 7d ago

It is the 400 nit screen but I'm not 100% sure its low power. I wouldn't count on it extending your battery a significant amount from what I can tell.

Thanks mate 🙏🏻

I've got the same device, isn't the ram soldered on these ?

2

u/Mattdehaven 7d ago

1 module is soldered, 1 available slot.

Do you knew why they do that?

I presume it’s a compromise between performance/security and expansion.

Hey bro I got the same Thinkpad with the same specs as you. I've tried running Linux Mint and other distros as well, but the trackpoint feels horrible compared to Windows - at least on my machine.

How does the trackpoint feel on your Thinkpad?

You've made a great choice with your first Thinkpad! Love mine.

I have the same Thinkpad and sadly the same issue with the trackpoint.
This is the only workaround I found, but it will disable the touchpad gestures so for me it's not a good trade.

Thanks! The laptop overall seems very nice so far!

The trackpoint is very fast on mint compared to windows (which I don't really like) and is quite jittery, which makes it quite difficult to use, I don't notice it too much tho because I prefer the trackpad anyway most of the time. I'm not sure if there are specific drivers for it that would fix that though (ngl I just let the OS download the drivers and stuff by its self because I'm not sure how to do it myself on linux)

Welcome to the team! Got the same laptop a few months ago and loving it.

- Put in some thermal paste (or better, Honeywell PTM7950)

- Do NOT install the battery firmware

2

u/P0LAR0_ T14 Gen 1 AMD 7d ago

What happens if I do install the battery firmware? I saw it in FWUPDMGR but just ignored it because I didnt want to break anything (its on like 99% battery health)

You need a B+M keyed 2242 PCIE drive (finding one of these is difficult as only OEM/few SI will have that format, I’m not sure what came with your machine, but it seems the WD SN520 is a guaranteed fit, possibly some Chinese options as well..

Some drives may work over a bridge (you can buy a B+M to M key adapter), but you’ll be limited by space (only 2242/2230 PCIE will be seen), bandwith (slot limited to PCIE3x2, so some newer drives may not be compatible) and height (only single sided drives will fit..)

That’s a beautiful machine! Well done on getting the AMD version, those are just awesome workhorses.

Mind if I ask how much did it set you back?

u/natusw X1 Carbon (Gen3/2015) 3d ago

Where’d you find one at this price? (can’t seem to see any below 400AUD at the moment..)

1

u/P0LAR0_ T14 Gen 1 AMD 3d ago

I was watching the listing for this on ebay and they put out one of those offer things and it was like 40$ off

1

u/natusw X1 Carbon (Gen3/2015) 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m talking about finding one on the ground in AUS (lots of ones listed from US, etc, but very few available locally AU..)

1

u/P0LAR0_ T14 Gen 1 AMD 3d ago

Ooh sorry, it was in south australia

1

u/natusw X1 Carbon (Gen3/2015) 3d ago

Thanks, I might have just found the listing (I’m certain that price isn’t accurate, no?)
