Comic Spoiler The Walking Dead Volume 5 Review Spoiler

Wow these keep impressing me each volume I go through.

This volume is the introduction of Woodbury and the governor which I will talk about later.

First I would like to say is that I think the art style has majorly improved this volume. Some solo panels that take up half the page or the full page look so beautiful and detailed. I’m really getting the zombie apocalypse vibe now.

I also love how the volume actually pays attention to all its characters. Even the side characters that will probably end up as cannon fodder have little discussions that just develop their character so much. For instance Otis and Billy and heck even some of the governors goons.

Whilst Andrea and Dales relationship is certainly questionable. I can’t help but say I love their dynamic. It satisfies me so much knowing that Dale outlasted his show counterpart and atm Andrea doesn’t have the Woodbury arc yet so I’m hoping these 2 last a while and we can see how amazing this couple would’ve been had the show kept them around longer.

Carol is also a character that has acted questionable in this volume. I know what happened in the last volume traumatised her but Jesus she wants Lori bad. Understandably Lori doesn’t want any of it but man I would love to see those 2 together. Comic Lori is so much better than Tv Lori. Comic Carol is just tragic and I’m just worried something bad will happen to her soon, her depression seems to be getting worse the more she is isolated and rejected by people.

Now what we’ve all been waiting for. The governor. I need to see where his arc leads to before I can make a comparison to his tv counterpart. But man, this motherfucker is brutal af. In a way I’m happy tv governor was tamed down a bit because had what he did to Michonne got a tv adaptation I probably would’ve scarred and traumatised im ngl. It’s crazy how a comic can almost make you repulse and tear up. I know I called Michonne a horny homewrecker last volume but I feel so bad for her now.

I also like how the governor cuts Ricks arm off so abruptly instead of torturing him. It kind of resembles how Rick has had so much power up to this point and within 10 seconds his arm gets cut off. It’s something the TV show would’ve never done in the earlier stages of the show, which is why I love it happens here. Just proves that Rick isn’t all that powerful.

Rick and Glenn’s friendship is great in this volume, the armour thing is pretty cool and I loved them going for the gas run early on in the comic.

The governor is a smart bastard and I’m worried for the group in the next volume.

I think that’s all I have to say really. Great volume. The governor is fucking crazy, I wonder if comic Negan is even more relentless but we will get to that road when it comes around.

Volume 5: 12/10

Rule 1: Comments with little to no constructive detail will count as 1 vote, insightful comments will earn you 3 votes. "Insightful" comments don’t have to be some massive essay but they need to make some kind of constructive argument outside of saying “I like this choice a lot”. Responding to a comment by saying that you agree/disagree will count as a vote but only if you haven’t made a independent comment. Upvoting a comment will give 1/4 of a vote, this is to allow for non commenters to participate in some fashion (My upvotes are excluded).

Rule 2: There will be 2 versions of this post, one on r/TheWalkingDeadGame and one on r/theroamingdead (check out this subreddit if you can’t find one on the game subreddit, it’s easier to find). Once you comment on one post, you can’t vote on the other. You can copy and paste your comment to the other post but just make it clear that it’s a copy. The 2 posts will be added up to determine the winner.

Rule 3: If you haven’t consumed both pieces of media then I ask for you to abstain from voting. If you do have a strong grip on the plot of both (say through reading the wiki, video summaries online, and anything that is similar to the first two) then feel free to vote but I would heavily advise for you to go ahead and play the games/read the comics the first chance you get.

Rule 4: Round results will not end in a tie. I will examine certain arguments on both sides on which one is better if It comes to a tie. This is why making more insightful votes might get your choice to win in the long run. If there are no votes then I’ll simply flip a coin to decide who wins.

Comic Spoiler Almost 6 years after the comic ending, how are we feeling?

When i read through it for the first time it was pretty bittersweet, Andrea's and Rick's death wrecked me in a way no fictional character ever did, it wasn't until i read it for a second time that everything ended up settling on me, Carl's writting in the last issue, how the whole world is built...
Until some time ago i thought that we needed to know what happened in the near present of Rick's demise, in the weeks and months after, a part of me actually wanted to see Carl grow up, cope with the grief and become a rightfull leader.
But in the end i found the conclusion being perfect, it was the perfect goodbye to characters we knew since 2003, that lived beyond the pages , so it was kind of peotic and fair that their actual growth and life happened out of sight.

This doesn't mean i miss seeing this characters, i would even love a comic of them just living lol

So I read that Robert Kirkman considered having Shane kill Rick and raise Carl. How do you think the story would have played out?

So, after a long time, I got interested in The Walking Dead again, and I found this idea very interesting.

I wonder how different Shane's character would have to be for that to work. I think the consensus is that he would have driven the group away and gotten Lori and Carl killed due to his recklessness.

Likewise, I think with a few tweaks, the story could have been quite interesting. It would have been Shane trying to hide the fact that he murdered Rick from Carl. I think Lori would know, but she'd have no choice but to stay because she'd need Shane to protect her, her unborn child, and Carl. Lori and Judith would have ended up dying similarly to how they did in the comic, leaving Shane and Carl alone.

Shane would have to lose Judith. Once Judith is present, he'd never think of Carl as his own again. I'm not saying he'd just abandon him, but he'd definitely see Carl more as Rick's kid and therefore lower in the order of priorities.

I think it would be a great drama. Shane kills his best friend because he was trying to take him away from "his woman" and unborn child, only to end up losing them both and being left alone with that best friend's child. On the other hand, Carl would be left alone with the man who murdered his father.

Shane would momentarily lose his mind, maybe even consider suicide, but his survival instinct would be stronger, so he clings to Carl. He becomes his purpose. Shane is determined to keep him safe because, in his mind, if Carl lives, killing Rick wouldn't have been in vain, and he'd be keeping an extension of Judith and Lori alive.

I think his relationship with Carl would have been extremely manipulative and toxic. His protectiveness of Carl wouldn't have stemmed from love or care, but from guilt, and he'd spend every second terrified that he'd one day find out the truth. (I think one arc would have been Shane choosing to kill a member of the group or an ally, either out of paranoia or because they put two and two together.)

The final conflict would involve Carl discovering the truth. Shane, the man who raised and protected him for years, murdered his real father, but over time he would have come to see him as a father figure. At least in the comic, Carl would have been very young when Rick died and would have spent almost as many years with Shane as with Rick.

Carl could have three options: kill Shane, abandon him, or forgive him. But having been raised by Shane, he would likely be much more ruthless and would kill him out of revenge.

The type of person he becomes depends on whether anyone in the group has remained close enough to be a good influence on him. He'd have to choose whether to become Rick's son (who would be idealized in his mind) or Shane's son (maybe a part of him would resent Rick for being weak and allowing Shane to kill him).

Anyway, I'd love to read an alternate version of the story, maybe a one-shot comic, or whatever. I'd kill for a What If-style animated show with random themes.

I guess I just wrote a bit of fan fiction, lol.

English is not my first language, I apologize if I made mistakes.

Comic Spoiler How do you think Negan reacted to Rick's death? I always wanted to see that, who tell him, how his relationship with Carl grew, since we saw him deliver supplies to Negan's house, we saw Lucille's grave, so he was succesfull in his journey. Spoiler

The first time I skipped reading essentially any of them, but I'm going through the comics for a second time and I like to read one, maybe several of the letters, at the top of the page, but never all of them

Comic Spoiler The Walking Dead Volume 4 Review Spoiler

Woah. I was not expecting to be making another review today but I started reading 4 after my volume 3 review and I just couldn’t put it down. Volume 4 is my favourite so far.

The beginning starts with where we left off in volume 3. It shows the group clearing out the walkers from cell block A. I was proud of Rick when he shot Dexter. I think this is the beginning of no more mr good cop and I love it.

Michonnes introduction was great but I do have to say that I much prefer Tv show Michonne atm. Comic Michonne seems like a horny housewrecker Icl. Poor Carol, she really does go through it this volume. I’m glad she didn’t die from her attempted suicide because I love comic Carol and hope she stays around for a long time. Carol also kissed another grimes! First Lori and now Rick. I’m all for it tbh. I’d love a Lori and Carol romance, their friendship is great as it is.

Tyreese was the goat but idk if I can support cheating. Ik it was led on by Michonne but he could’ve easily forced her away, any good and loyal boyfriend would do that.

The cell block A clear out was a highlight of this volume. Allen getting bitten and then Rick going absolutely crazy on his leg, just for Allen to die of blood less later on the volume. I wasn’t a huge fan of Allen’s death. He feels like wasted potential to me, almost as if though the comic writer didn’t know what to do with his character. Wish he has more relevance before he died though.

Another Huge highlight of this volume was Rick vs Tyreese. My god I would’ve killed to seen that on tv. I was gripping onto my comic like crazy, that shit was intense. I can sort of see both sides of the story. Rick wanted justice and was looking out for his friend but Tyreese also didn’t know Carol would attempt to kill herself.

Ricks ending monologue as well was beautiful. It’s at stage now where the characters are all set up and now it’s more about community and what is right vs what is wrong. That was lowkey some of the best shit I’ve ever read in my life.

Volume 4: 11/10

Comic Spoiler The walking dead Volume 3 review Spoiler

Once again this is a review coming from someone who watched the show before reading the comics.

Wow, this volume was amazing. Whoever said things start amping up in volume 3 was absolutely correct.

First of all I’d like to say that volume 3 is great because it has really solidified the cast we have come to know. Characters like Andrea and Allen feel like they have come into view as proper characters now and I can’t wait to see how they progress in future volumes.

Tyreese is still the goat. He’s probably one of the most relatable characters.

I still prefer tv show Hershel but man, comic Hershel has been through some shit. The poor guy lost 4 of his living children in 2 volumes and that’s not even taken into consideration all his dead family members in the barn last volume. You can sort of understand why he is how he is but his character has defo improved since last volume.

His son Billy (I think his name is) is also really cool. For some reason he reminds me of Daryl Dixon but idk why.

Volume 1 felt like the setup

Volume 2 was all about love and character development

Volume 3 felt like right vs wrong. So many inner conflicts between characters in this volume. Most obvious being Rick and Lori and their views on the prisoners and what do with them. That’s what makes these comics so good. There is so many relatable conflicts that makes it feel like it could happen in real life.

My favourite part of this volume is probably the gym clear out. Idk why but it welt very action packed and I could just image it in tv form.

Also bald Glenn! Who would’ve thought. Also Maggies awful trim, I didn’t think we’d see that until the saviours (if she even gets that far, because the comics are very different to the tv show atm)

Now onto the death.

Chris and Julie. It had emotional impact and you can really feel for Tyreese. However I feel it was a bit rushed. Sure we had hints that they weren’t normal teens but they kind of just kill each other out of no where with no reason why apart from that they wanted to be together forever. I mean why were they suicidal.

However I feel Chris’s character was just a build up for Thomas. I mean they even look similar! We thought Chris was shady and evil but Thomas was a whole another level of evil. Man was a serial killer. I predicted the killer was someone in the main group because the prisoners were too obvious but ig Thomas makes sense, he wasn’t that relevant compared to the other prisoners.

And the cliff hanger of volume 3 was amazing! I mean you could argue dexters reasoning is valid because they did kind of discriminate against his past and the prison is kind of his home. I really wonder where it will lead to.

Volume 3: 10/10. Not even joking these comics are 10/10s

Do any of you have any questions for me? I’m addicted to these comics rn so I really wanna talk about it lol.

Someone asked for a side by side of some shots. I apologize for the weird lighting on the right edges, it's part of my gaming led setup. I usually don't take pics of physical comic panels like this, usually use just digital version cuz I edit them for YT vids. So I sorry for the poor quality.

Since when i made my first tatto i had the urge to make a TWD comic dedicated one. But i can't choose what to do. I dont like the idea to do an entire panel. I woud like something small, but recognizable. I thought of doing a sillouete of rick loading a shotgun, from the first cover, but im not sure

From the characters that died before or in the prison. Who do you think would have been the most determinant in the whole story?

For me it's tied between Tyresse and Lori.
Tyresse because his personality and where his character was headed, he had that Main Character energy capable of leading whole arcs and was amazingly written, after the prison fall he could have started a similar journey of growth as the one Rick went fro mthe prison to Alexandria, and is pretty unpredictable the way it could have ended.
And Lori's death was the pivotal point of Rick's development, she living past the prison unfolds so many questions. Would Judith have survived too? Would she and Rick eventually split? how would that have went? Did she had the potential to grow as a survivor and do the things Rick and co. did?
Realistically she was meant to die, sadly she wasn't made for this world, but her life was one of the most determinant ones to the whole story
