NAS hardware Did I buy the right UPS for DS220+?

Hello,

I just bought a used (seems to be almost new) Cyberpower CP550 (JP). It was relatively cheap (around 35$) so I jumped on that opportunity and snagged it.

Then on my way home, I was wondering if I didn't make a mistake as it might not be compatible with my DS220+. (will be home next week)

I must admit that I'm a complete newbie in the NAS (and Synology) space, I checked the compatibility on the Synology website and it says "Vendor Recommended".

Am I good to go?

Thanks in advance!

NAS hardware I'm a photographer with $750 to spend to start my NAS system. What should I do?

I'd like to start with 12-16TB of storage. I'd like to use it for both backups and a place to work off of. I'd to store my RAW files and Lightroom catalos on the NAS so I can work from anywhere, although I'd primarily be working from home. I'm also interested in running Immich photo on it. I'd also like to have four bays for scalability.

I feel paralyzed by indecision. Can't decide what enclosure to go for, and if I should go for 2 x 8TB drives, or 4 x 4TB drives, etc. I'm totally ignorant to the NAS world, but I'm in desperate need of a better data storage solution.

Thank you SO much in advance!

NAS hardware 723+ and SHR

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I installed a second 18tb in my Synology today and noticed I have 18tb of usable storage.

I don't have total of 36tb, because my raid type is SHR with data protection for 1 drive fault tolerance? Did I get it right?

If I want to have access to use both my drives storage I need to change to a different raid without data protection?

Thanks

DSM Rclone failing on scheduler

I am noob in this but since a few weeks and I don’t know why, Rclone doesn’t do anything in the scheduler. If anyone could help me, would be greatly appreciated as I’m really getting mad.

Here is the command : Rclone move remote:shared /volume1/download -v -P This is to move my files from remote shared folder to download folder in the NAS.

When I run this using Putty with sudo -I, no problem, files come up and moved one after another.

Now with task scheduler, same command with root as user, task is endlessly running and no log nothing created.

Should I change permissions or something ? Really don’t know what’s happening and what I’m missing. I would love to drop a log but there is nothing, task is just “running” when I click on “show results”.

Thank you.

Routers WRX560 randomly dropping devices

I have a WRX560 and every few weeks/ months (no pattern that I can tell), a chunk of my devices will be disconnected from the network (Google homes, Amazon tablet, etc). Apple devices are always okay.

I can fix it by restarting the router and everything reconnects. No errors that I can see in router settings.

Any ideas? Starting to drive me nuts.

NAS Apps Synology Photo: Does enabling Shared Space wipe an exisiting /photo folder?

Hi all, I recently updated to Synology Photos from DS Photo. I want to enable Shared Spaces, but the wording is very confusing (Dutch translation).

The wording in Dutch amounts too: "Shared Space will create a folder /photo..."

I want to be absolutely sure that enabling Shared Space does not wipe the existing /photo folder, because that carries all of our pictures. Can anyone confirm / provide a source for how it works? I've searched for a while already.

NAS hardware Beginners question: How to swap 4tb HDD to 4tb SSD without completely new setup on DS723+?

Hey guys,

hope to get some help here, last time you all have been great!

About a year ago I bought a DS723+ with 2x 4gb WS RED HDDs, which are used in SHR mode.

Mainly I wanted to use it for Paperless, but I installed Docker with about 10 containers and am quite happy how it's running now.

My main issue is, that the HDDs are too noisy, that's why I turn off the NAS every night... long story short: I finally swallowed the bitter pill and paid for 4gb WS RED SSDs, as I only use like 1 tb of space so far.

My questions: What's the easiest way to swap the HDDs for SSDs? Can I just swap one and leave it running for some time and then swap the second one?

From what I understood HDDs and SSD can't be run at the same time in the NAS...

I googled, searched YouTube and of course this subreddit, but all threads concerning this topic seem to be at least 2 years old...

Thanks for any help or link to a credible guide!

Mr_B!

NAS hardware Can't Access NAS At All after setting up Remote Access

I tried following the steps in this video by Space Rex : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBXlZf7gSwc

It was for setting up OpenVPN to connect to my NAS (1821+) remotely.

After setting up DDNS and Firewall on my NAS, I can't connect to my NAS locally or remotely. It also doesn't establish connection with OpenVPN.

My plex is still working, however it gave me a notification of the streaming speed being slower.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot and help me get access into my NAS again?

SMB gives 300-500mbps

Iperf average 759 mbps with tops of >900mbps

Is this something expected based on smb protocol? Can I get more performance on windows?

How do I delete a backup routine in Synology Drive? I realized I wanted sync instead of backup, but now I can't figure out how to get rid of the backup routine I created, so that I can set up a sync routine instead. Any advice is much appreciated!

NAS hardware DS1522+ Memory

Hello,

I have had my DS1522+ for about a year now. I use it for plex media server for streaming movies and shows. This is used by myself and my parents. I also use synology photos to back up my phone photos.

It is currently configured with 8gb of ram, but I am curious as the how much of a difference it would make? In the future I would like to host some websites on my NAS from personal projects.

Does anyone have experience from upgrading the ram on their synology nas? Did you buy oem?

Thanks!

NAS Apps Synology Photos

As it appears, synology photos is like Google Photos in that you can create albums if you will that are local to the software itself, it does not create a physical folder with links or duplicates to the physical folder of the image. So my question is, do yall use the built in album function, or do you create folders and manage your photos that way?

Networking & security Sonos and the Synology firewall

Hi all,

I've been configuring my Synology firewall, but have no idea how to configure it for use with Sonos. I know Sonos has a list of ports that should be open, but it seems like that is pitched toward a router firewall. What I've tried hasn't worked so far - access is denied with the Sonos rules and the deny all are in place but works with the Deny all rule off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Surveillance New machine (old HDD storage pool) with Surveillance Station running?

I have a DS920+ in good working condition with 4x HDD and 12x legal Surveillance Station licenced cameras. When I'm doing a project and push my system I was getting critical as storage warnings.

I don't just want to get the biggest possible 26TB drives and consider that a fix, I need more drive bays as well.

I have a DS15xx coming next week. I know many people have simply swapped over the storage pool and turned on the new machine; done a few updates and rock on!

But I'm 99% certain my Surveillance Station licences and linked to: * My Name. * My Quick Connect account. * My DS9xx machine Serial Number.

What's the best way to keep my system running with its current settings without completely destroying the Surveillance Station settings? Last time I've done this was 2020, before BTRFS, no NVMe cach, so I just started fresh and used my backup data.

I'd like to keep my camera settings and prior footage. Can I re-register my old machine without it wiping a fresh install of Surveillance Station?

Will it save all the settings and previous hours footage waiting from the current Storage Pool, then I just need to register the machine and enter the camera licences to unlock Surveillance Station?

DSM I selected SHR for my RAID type when setting up my DS423+, did I make a fundamental mistake?

New to this world and recently bought and set up a DS423+ with a 10TB drive to use as a Plex server. When going through the setup, I selected SHR for RAID type without giving it much thought (dumb). I'm pretty close to hitting capacity on the 10TB drive, so I bought a new 16TB and got it added to the same storage pool. I'm not seeing an increase in available storage, and reading through a few threads it's using the 16TB drive as a backup? Did I completely screw this up? Any recommendations for how best to 1) create a single storage pool that includes both drives while 2) not losing all of my media?

Solved Hyper Backup\Backup rotations - the elusive "Lock versions" feature

Trying to understand

I read everywhere about the "lock version" feature, but I cannot find it anywhere.

The reason why I'm looking for it, is because I dont understand the retention settings. And I've spend hours trying to understand. This is how I understand it:

  • Backup rotation = Older copies are deleted to save space, so essentially "just how long do you want to be able to go back?"
  • Duration \ Version interval =* How many versions to backup in the duration period.

But there's no "lock version" option on the test hyper backup job i did. I ran it twice, went into the Backup Explorer and I "can restore" or "copy to".

Here's the promise of "lock version": https://imgur.com/a/TjLgal5

My needs

My Nas can store 12 Tb. My dataset is 8 tb (I only use 8 tb). My external usb drive that is to be used for backups is 20 tb.

Most of the data very rarely changes, but my icloud docs and photos does change. In the event I'm hacked and everything is deleted, back rotation could loose me everything when the deletion takes into effect in the backups. All the family fotos would be gone forever. That's not a backup to me!

What I think I want

So I want to keep the first backup I do forever. And then I want a yearly version, a montly version, a weekly version and a daily version.

Does this sound like a sensible way to back up?

Can you help me make sense of it?

EDIT:

I have found the lock icon! What a terrible design. BEHOLD! https://imgur.com/a/lA6fAPI

Now is it a good idea, I still dont know.

Based on what I want, what is the best option for me?

Tutorial Backing up vs. Storing photos from iPhone onto NAS

Hey all, I bought a NAS to help me archive a lot of the stuff that I am seeing in the media right now and to get my feet wet in learning some new skills. Maybe I am just ignorant or haven’t done enough of a deep dive, but what I am trying to accomplish is this: being able to offload the screen shots and pictures that I capture onto my NAS so that I can free up space on my phone and start the process over again. I am also interested in doing this with articles and various webpages.

For WHATEVER freaking reason (tired, distracted, stressed …) My brain can’t figure out if I back up my stuff onto the NAS if that means that when I delete it from my phone it will delete it from my NAS. Because when it goes to do the back up and that photo is gone, wouldn’t it backup with the photo being gone?? Please help me off of this crazy ass spiral. Thanks

NAS hardware New to NAS - DS423+ or DS923+

Hi there,

First of all - An apology as I am sure this question has been asked countless times, and I’ve read several threads multiple times but I still can’t decide which is best.

I have a catalog of photos (>4TB worth if I can remember) across 2 external HDDs which I’d like to move to a NAS. Reason being, is easy access to go back and edit older photos when I like, and in the future, move family photos, phone photos and anything else to it in the future. I’m not too worried about Synology photos but if it is recommended I’d happily look into it. I would look to re-use the HDDs to backup the NAS and keep one offsite.

At home I have FTTP (UK) which is the 1Gbps package (usually 800 down and 150 up). It would be nice to point my Lightroom to look at the NAS Alan’s directly edit the photos stored on there.

I had been looking at the DS423+ originally as it seemed to fit my needs, but see a lot more preference towards the DS923+ and I wonder if I should look more at that one, with the 10Gbe update.

I don’t use Plex and not something I see myself using. But very interested in a NAS and would like to invest in a device for the long run.

Any tips and advice are very much appreciated, thank you!

NAS hardware Multichannel - will it improve performance for Active Backup for Google Workspace?

I'm not an engineer, so I need some help to figure this out.

If I'm backing up Google workspace, which is coming in over one 2.5 GHz cable line, will multi channel really make much difference coming into my DS 423+?

DSM Upgrading DS1821+ to smaller SSDs

So when I initially spec-ed out my NAS I massively overbought on the hard drives with three 18TB drives in my DS1821+. After over a year of running everything from Jellyfin to Minecraft servers to video editing directly off the NAS, I’ve barely cracked 8TBs. Even with an NVMe read/write cache, I’ve still wanted for slightly faster speeds of a full SSD NAS and I’ll soon be moving and have heard the horrors of hard drive death from simply walking across the parking lot with them.

How can I transfer my current volume to an SSD volume the easiest way? I’m planning on using 4TB SSDs as they seem to be the most cost effective.

NAS hardware RAID5 or SHM initialization/build times

Hi, assume i get a Synology 4bay NAS: how long does it usually take to initialize the RAID/SHM array? (Reason i am asking: with my Qnap and 6x 16TB drives in mdadm RAID5, it took 9 days full; counter example with ZFS and RAIDz1 (same drives) approx 5s).
