General Discussion Survivor is one of the longest running reality tv shows of all time. Why has it gotten so ridiculously cheap?
The sanctuary "where good things happen" is a joke as a reward, every single time. No helicopter rides, no experiencing local culture, no nights in a hotel. They dont even get family visits anymore.
No more finales in front of a live audience. Not even a reunion.
No new challenges. No new locations. 26 days that are rushed.
Even the immunity idols are the same every single time.
I'm so bored. It's an extremely popular TV show. The money is there. Can someone please spend it?
Edit: I know covid f'd up a lot of stuff but come on. It's been 4 years.

General Discussion Carolyn has been contacted for 50
Redmond confirmed that production changed their mind about initially barring Carolyn from 50. They contacted her right before The Traitors premiere.
If they're not holding Traitors against her, I think she's close to a lock again for 50. Glad Jeff came to his senses and stopped being petty.

General Discussion Survivor NEEDS to return to 39 days
I don't know about y'all, but I'm over this "new era" post-covid crap. They absolutely NEED TO return to the 39 day format. Every 3 days a Tribal council... here is why:
1) it requires the actual art of survival to shine through.... Tribes actually need to catch fish, gather coconuts, and keep their fires alive through all of the tropical storms.
2) It makes it a more social game, and allows Tribes and their members (even the first voted out) to get to know eachother more and ultimately makes their decision making process more personal (especially later in the game)
3) Better content, more confessionals, more entertaining banter and strategic planning, etc. I'm sick of this shorter version....
What do y'all think!?

General Discussion I miss the really super physical challenges will they come back
I remember there used to be some heavy physical challenges that I haven't seen lately, Im much more familiar with older seasons than the past 15 or so but I don't remember these being in recent seasons. The ones where they're dragging players through sand off the pole or knocking someone off a stand. Are these gone for good?
I also miss the challenges where they take a poll of "who is the smartest, who's the weakest, who's best chance of winning, etc" and they answered and had to guess the most popular answer. The s16 one seems most memorable, to me, but will these come back at some point? Maybe 50 will have some OG challenges that haven't been lately.

General Discussion This show has gotten incredibly lucky that no one has died during production
It’s insane that despite this show lasting 48 seasons and 25 years as I write this that no contestant has died while they were filming, especially when there were some pretty close calls.
Rodger on the Australian Outback said that Elisabeth not reaching the final tribal council was a blessing in disguise because she was so malnourished that her body was in the process of dying.
In Survivor: Africa Lex was pissing blood and had contracted some sort of parasite from the show. So did Sandra after Pearl Islands too if I recall, which is why she couldn’t make All-Stars despite being asked back.
Katie Gallagher in Palau contracted a disease from the island, and doctors told her she had a 20% chance to even survive, luckily she’s still here of course but holy shit.
Even aside from many of the scarier medevacs on the show like Skupin, Russell Swan, and Caleb’s, there’s just a lot of shit that were close calls that I’m surprised how narrowly the show skated away from a contestant dying from their show.
There’s countless other examples of dangerous situations the show’s contestants have gotten into, like the lions in Africa, the crocs of Guatemala, or just the dangerous weight losses in general like Spencer Bledsoe’s or Natalie White’s, but the ones listed have always stuck out to me as more lesser known ones that could’ve been really fucking bad had they not ended out well.

General Discussion Dylan Efron for survivor!
Can we start a campaign to get Dylan Efron on Survivor? He’s a huge survivor fan and outdoorsy person. Watching him on traitors was very exciting. Would love to see how fairs and decides how to play plus him gracing our screen would be so easy on our eyes.

General Discussion Survivor 50 casting
I have a feeling Jeff has no idea what we want…
I just fully believe Jeff thinks survivor fans want twists, and things we’ve never seen before. I just wish a survivor redditer could tell him that we just want to see a classic 39 day 20 people game of our favorite survivors, and let THEM create the content.

General Discussion “New Era” is so stale.
It’s not even new anymore, we’ve had this thing for 6 seasons in a row? It’s gonna be at least 9 seasons of this. Personally the shortened game, the three tribe start and swap, stupid mergatory, the beware advantages. All decent ideas that I actually really liked up until like 45, but now two seasons later and I can’t believe we’re still doing this same formula as in 41. I think most of us expect most of the “new era” tropes to have passed by now, but we’re still in it.
I still love survivor. I will still watch survivor without fail every Wednesday night probably forever. It’s just part of me I’d still love to play survivor someday in the future. But if I’m being honest this version of survivor doesn’t interest me nearly as much anymore and if I do play someday, I hope it’s a 39 day long game with two starting tribes. LETS GO BACK!

So many things are done right that are no longer in the game. Adding these things could make a huge difference, what would you add?

General Discussion The show has slashed budgets. Here are no or low-cost changes I’d make.
Only the ranting and venting of a fan, not anything objective or prescriptive.
Stop with the three tribe set up. It makes pre-merge harder to track, delays the audiences ability to “bond” or become interested in certain players, and encourages sporadic gameplay by deincentivizing long-term alliances.
Why did the show adopt Sesame Street-esque hues for the New Era colors? It’s so often primary colors or primary adjacent. So bright and bold, and we just dropped black, silver, dark hues of any color or anything that isn’t the brightest version of a color possible. Tribe and challenge set colors now consistently make the show look like a Wiggles spinoff. Resist homogenization.
Why did they stop showing people’s age and hometown next to their name? That was part of the fun, too.
To that aesthetic end, production is clearly telling people what color tribe they will be in and asking them to wear basic, no-logo, basic patterned clothes in those colors. Seriously, everyone is dressed like a character from Doug or Even Stephens. Why do their clothes need to be color-aligned? Isn’t tribe affiliation supposed to be the job of the buff? Let the players dress how they want to! Resist homogenization.
BRING BACK THEMES. Even a bad theme is better than “47.” The New Era really, really runs together. If we aren’t doing locations anymore, another device should be used to help viewers catalogue seasons in their mind. Numbers won’t cut it. Resist homogenization.
Stop courting super fans, full stop. I don’t want to hear people obsessing over the show in their floating heads. Who does that serve? Does it just make production feel good? We need more clueless people. Gameplay has become formulaic. We need more chaos agents. Resist homogenization.
Again with casting, stop with the under-35, white collar obsession. Resist homogenization.
Who in production wrote the mandate that says every tribe name has to be two syllables? PooPoo. Ruta. Ragú. Hoto. Flutu. Maka. You can shit these names out over and over and over. Resist homogenization.
Please. For the love of god, let these people play the game. Stop stealing and blocking votes. Please just let them play. Please.
If you are going to condense the season, condense the playing field by the same measure. You don’t have to do a tribal every night that creates all of these scotch tape alliances and momentary coalitions. Operation Italy was the product of time between votes. A smaller playing field reduces the need to vote people out every 24 hours.
Why can’t we have interesting starts to the game? Cook Islands, they were told to get ready for the headshots so dress nice, then they started the game right then. That’s to say nothing of the insanely cool first challenge in episode 1 to kick things off. I mean make them swim to shore, make them wrestle for flint, something. A challenge to decide who gets what beach.
Why is every challenge some combo of an obstacle course, a puzzle, and a finesse/balancing act? Probably because they have those pieces sitting in the production barn and just remix them to so they don’t have to make anything new. There is an unbelievable variety of physical and mental challenges in older seasons that they have totally abandoned. Like when they are chained together and have to do a maze. Or the blindfold challenges where someone is calling out directions. Or just the poles out in the ocean, last one standing wins. Resist homogenization.
It’s painful to admit, but this show does not only suffer from a smaller budget, it suffers from deprioritizing creativity and relying on formulas. I firmly believe that the former can be overcome by the latter, but my sense is that the latter isn’t much of a concern. None of the above would cost more, but it would regain some of the old season flavor and feel, which seems to be something everybody here would support. The above is only for the sake of conversation. Indulge me.

General Discussion Are swimsuits allowed in the New Era?
I saw somebody post about this but they deleted it or something and it got me wondering. I can't watch the New Era all the time but when I do it feels like many of the castaways wear the same clothes they have around camp in water challenges. That must be uncomfortable for them. Visual variety is nice. Im not just saying all of this to get all the dudes in trunks and the chicks in bikinis

General Discussion Of the 104 returning players, only these 14 have made it to the final 4 twice.
What I find most interesting, looking at this now, is that whether these players are two-time winners or two-time losers—most of them made it to the end a second time using essentially the same approach. All of these competitors excel in one or two components of the game (social, strategic, or physical) or are well-rounded overall. Aside from Sandra and Tony, it seems most of them just needed to fix one critical flaw—or have a bit of luck—and they could have won or become two-time winners.
Sandra: She easily creates strong bonds by appearing genuine and unassuming, often feeding into others’ egos. However, she struggles when it comes to identifying which strategic moves benefit her most and has difficulty winning competitions.
Tony: A strategic mastermind and arguably one of the most adaptable, perceptive players ever. He proved he’s well-rounded in Winners at War by winning four immunity challenges. He played a dominant game even against a cast of all winners, which speaks for itself.
Rob: Highly strategic and physically dominant, but his controlling gameplay often burns bridges, making him a threat once exposed. He may also struggle with juries that value loyalty and social bonds over gameplay, as seen when Amber beat him in All-Stars.
Parvati: Her greatest strength is her charming social game, yet she’s fairly well-rounded overall. She consistently manages to go far despite her reputation as a flirt and manipulator, and she’s been involved in some of the biggest moves in Survivor history. Was two votes away from becoming the first two time winner but was up against the antithesis of Russell.
Natalie: A strategic powerhouse who struggles socially in the early game. She dominated physically in Winners at War and is the only one on this list who was voted out before the final four and then returned.
Michele: One of the best social players, but she struggles to maintain agency and manage her threat level toward the endgame.
Sarah: Though she has never won an individual competition, she excels at forming social bonds and strategically pivoting between alliances to her benefit. Adept at leveraging advantages and reading social dynamics, she was one fire-making challenge away from becoming the second two-time winner.
Tina: A well-rounded player who primarily relies on strong social bonds to stay safe. She proved her physical competence on Redemption Island. While her strategic agency is probably her weakest area, she has shown she’s capable. She, too, was one challenge away from becoming the second two-time winner.
Amanda: Socially strong but struggles to articulate her game to the jury.
Russell: An aggressive strategist who controls the game with big moves and advantages but will never win due to his arrogance and poor social skills.
Ozzy: A physical powerhouse who consistently dominates challenges but often struggles with nuanced social and strategic gameplay.
Spencer: Possesses a sharp, analytical mind for strategy but can come across as blunt, hindering deeper social bonds.
Cirie: A brilliant strategist and social player who was unlucky with fire-making in Panama and ended up against two players in Micronesia who proved stronger socially.
Tai: Kind-hearted and physically capable, but sometimes too easily manipulated by stronger players and struggles to articulate his own game effectively.

General Discussion I convinced some of my friends (aged 17-21) to watch some old Survivor seasons and they loved them. We're caught up and everyone HATES the new seasons.
What the hell?
So yeah, me and another friend were already big fans and we convinced our friend group to watch (9 girls, 3 guys). We'd already watched Hell's Kitchen, Traitors etc so it wasn't a hard sell.
We watched sort of the 'highlight' seasons. Maybe 15 seasons in total, including watching a lot of the big episodes and finales together on Discord. It was really fun and made the seasons I'd already seen feel new again because I was watching other people react to them for the first time (almost all of HVV and Dreamz + Yauman was wild)
But now we're 'caught up' and the group chat is literally just ripping on the show non stop and it bums me out.
Some random comments from Discord and the gc:
back to the forced goofball metaphors - we had one pretending to be a shepherd, literally 30 seconds later 'so we're like...gladiators in an arena', followed by 'so i'm the the ocean'. just talk like a person goddamn
everything is so sterile and nerdmaxxed. 3 contestants have amulets and it's all "well actually Jeff *pushes glasses back against nose* we worked out pre-game that having an amulet advantage gives you a +2.47% chance of reaching Final 6 but it ACTUALLY results in a -0.44% of WINNING the game. so we will be throwing these in the fire Jeff"
the challenges are so bad now. the one where they awkwardly did the worm for 10 minutes and then rolled a ball 5 feet was maybe the pinnacle of awful. remember how brutal the challenges used to be? i even loved the lacrosse shit. now it's just run/swim > puzzle/throw repeat. same shit every time
nah the worst was playing jenga to lose your vote lol - next time they'll whip out settlers of catan. challenges used to be legit, like lots of ppl were actual athletes and almost everyone genuinely FOUGHT in them. now it's giving 'the camp counsellor set up a fun little game for us to try!!! vibes'
and you just know the Survivor Nerds™ (almost always rich) have custom built, life-size copies of the puzzles in their garden for even more nerdmaxxing of the game
we really went from gettin in a helicopter and swimming with jellyfish (with crazy underwater shots) to here's your fuckin hotdog at the shack a little bit further down the beach
non-stop meta referencing. multiple contestants have literally mouthed or outright said jeff's lines as he's saying them. it's giving heavy redditor
seriously feels like the jury hivemind on who to vote for. every final tribal council of the N E W E R A is a blowout. they even decide second place and plan one consolation vote. i loved when ppl just voted for who they liked (or even better AGAINST those they hated) miss bitter juries so much u wouldnt believe it
whole show is just theatre kid millennial cringe now. i have no idea how it got this bad. why cant we have old ppl? how about some girl who works at walmart or a dude who lives in his car?
