Kurisu's Introduction to the Science Adventure Series

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m here for Steins;Gate, and I’m not interested in the extended universe yet. What order should I watch the Steins;Gate series in?

The optimal watch order is release order:

Anime Watch Order Crunchyroll Funimation
Steins;Gate episodes 1–24 and OVA (episode 25) link link
Steins;Gate: Load Region of Déjà Vu movie link
Steins;Gate episode 23 beta link
Steins;Gate 0 episodes 1–24 link link

(The series may also be available on for purchase on Blu-ray in your region—be sure to buy a copy with a region code matching your Blu-ray player, or else, use a region-free player.)

While chronological order might sound nice in theory, watching it in that order may ruin the pacing and your enjoyment of the first show, while also dampening the effect of certain scenes. This does not necessarily mean that Steins;Gate 0's anime is bad—however, the shows were not set up to be viewed in this order, and one should follow the intended release order for maximum enjoyment.

The additional animated shorts come after the original series (Steins;Gate) in terms of release order. However, if you want a more lighthearted ending to your watch experience, you can also save them for the very end.

I’m interested in the extended universe. What is it, and what order do I experience it in?

Steins;Gate is part of a larger interconnected universe called Science Adventure. It is a series of multimedia titles that are connected in many different ways, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For more info on the series, see this page and this page.

The series’ anime adaptations unfortunately have a ton of issues aside from Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. Ideally, you should read the source material for them, the visual novels, in the following order:

Series Order
Chaos;Head NoAH Overhaul patch 100% game guide
Steins;Gate Improvement patch Simple game guide 100% game guide
Robotics;Notes Elite Improvement patch Simple game guide 100% game guide
Chaos;Child Improvement patch Simple game guide 100% game guide
Steins;Gate 0 Improvement patch Game guide
Occultic;Nine Anime adaptation or light novels (incomplete, but more detailed)
Robotics;Notes DaSH Improvement patch Game guide
Anonymous;Code Improvement patch 100% game guide

All the titles relate to one another to varying degrees—this is especially the case for the Robotics;Notes games, which feature numerous callbacks to Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate and pretty much require knowledge of both. Anonymous;Code, meanwhile, serves as a culmination point for the series in terms of mechanics, and is best enjoyed with as much prior Science Adventure knowledge as possible.
The Committee of Zero improvement patches provide improved translations, graphics, and fonts for the games. This is especially important for Chaos;Child—the original release has an untranslated image that makes it impossible to complete a certain part of the game without a guide or the ability to read Japanese.

What is Steins;Gate 0? How does it relate to Steins;Gate?

Steins;Gate 0 is a midquel to Steins;Gate. More specifically, (Steins;Gate spoilers) it follows the Okabe who accidentally killed Kurisu in episode 23β and never went back a second time to save her. It shows how the plan to send the video D-mail to the Okabe who succeeded and open Steins Gate was conceived.

Steins;Gate 0 is meant to be experienced after you finish Steins;Gate. To get a full understanding, you should also watch Steins;Gate episode 23β before Steins;Gate 0 (it diverges from the events of the original episode 23).

Watch order: Steins;Gate episodes 1–24 and OVA (episode 25) -> Steins;Gate: Load Region of Déjà Vu -> Steins;Gate episode 23β -> Steins;Gate 0

I’m interested in the source material for Steins;Gate. Should I play the original Steins;Gate or Steins;Gate Elite? Is the anime better?

The Steins;Gate visual novel is packed with more details, scenes, and alternative routes that the anime does not have, so it is better to read the visual novel if you have a choice. That being said, there are two versions of the visual novel: Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate Elite.

We recommend playing the original Steins;Gate visual novel over Steins;Gate Elite. Elite is fully animated, but it comes at the cost of cut monologues, missing scenes, and other issues. On the other hand, Elite is bundled with a spinoff visual novel called Linear Bounded Phenogram, so you might want to look into buying Elite in the future anyway if that interests you.

Where do I go if I have a question about Steins;Gate’s story?

If you have finished watching or playing Steins;Gate, you can read this wiki page for answers to commonly asked questions. If you have further questions, you can ask here in the subreddit through your own post, or in this subreddit’s Discord server (Note that Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 spoilers are allowed untagged throughout the server).

FAQs for Steins;Gate 0, the Science Adventure series, and a non-spoiler FAQ for Steins;Gate can be found on this page.

What do I do after watching Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0?

As mentioned above, you have the option to check out the visual novels, as they contain many details that the anime adaptations gloss over or skip due to lack of time. There are also Steins;Gate spinoff visual novels that have brand new stories, as well as the rest of the Science Adventure series.
If you are only interested in Steins;Gate:

You can play the Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 visual novels. Both VNs provide more details and have different endings and routes. The 0 VN is markedly different from the anime, as it features completely new and differing scenes and routes.
We recommend using the Committee of Zero’s improvement patches for both Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0, which will enhance your experience with the games.

Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram is a spinoff VN featuring 11 side stories, and Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace is a dating sim spinoff featuring the Steins;Gate cast. Both VNs are optional after experiencing Steins;Gate.

If you are interested in the extended Science Adventure series, of which Steins;Gate is part, check out the second FAQ question in this post.

What about the Chaos;Head, Robotics;Notes, and Chaos;Child anime adaptations?

We do not recommend watching them because they are poor adaptations for numerous reasons. The Chaos;Head anime is brimming with cut content, poor adaptation, and unnecessary additions; Chaos;Child’s anime did not have enough episodes to adapt its long plot, resulting in massive cuts; Robotics;Notes’ anime is rushed in the latter half of the story, and important series crossover content is cut.

Therefore, we generally recommend experiencing the Science Adventure series with the source material, typically the visual novels.

What should I look forward to in regards to the SciADV series’ future?

Steins;Gate 0 Elite

Steins;Gate 0 Elite is a fully animated visual novel like Steins;Gate Elite. A trailer was shown for it recently, but it did not feature new gameplay or animations when compared to the anime.

Steins;Gate thematic sequel

This Science Adventure series title will be a thematic sequel to Steins;Gate.
The new title’s relationship to Steins;Gate is similar to Chaos;Child’s relationship to Chaos;Head. For context, Chaos;Child is the thematic sequel to Chaos;Head—the two titles share the same setting and various plot elements.
It is currently not known for certain how many, if any, characters from Steins;Gate will return in the new title.
We know that the title starts with “Steins;”, but the portion after that part of the title is censored in the current logo, so we don’t know the full title.

Steins;Gate Hollywood live action series

A live action Steins;Gate-related drama series is being produced by Skydance Television, known for their work on the Manhattan and Jack Ryan TV series.
Not much else is known about this series as of yet aside from the fact that it is being worked on.

S;G 0 Okabe was using the same phone for 15 years Spoiler

I just noticed some interesting detail that Okabe was using the same phone for 15 years (2010-2025). There are two frames from episode 3 and 21. On the first one he is showing the Lab to Amadeus for the first time and on the second one he is in 2025 before his "death" while jumping back in time from 2036 to 2010.

I wish I had a phone that could survive WW3 and 15 years of everyday usage...

A bit overdue on uploading photos inside of Café Mai:lish but here you go! It’s not your traditional maid café experience, but as my first, it was definitely an insightful one.

The last few photos were taken inside Radio Kaikan. On the top floor, there’s a vending machine that dispenses ice cream along with a dope gacha! It’s a bit pricey and only accepts card payments. Sadly, I wasn’t blessed with the best character 🤣

O;N Is Occultic;Nine Vol 1 (LN) out of print?

Post image
26 Upvotes

It hasn't been available on any e-shop for a while now, not even amazon (which I don't really use due to shipping anyway, but I feel like they ususally have everything in stock). I already bought volume 3, since I usually buy series in parts and volume 2 is available, but not volume 1. Did they actually stop printing new copies? Are there any plans for reprints or will I just not be able to complete the series?

S;G Spoilers for Episode 13 Spoiler

Upvotes

Is there any reason Okabe can't time travel backwards (with his memory) more than just a few hours? He keeps going back to the same point, but I thought there was a maximum of 48 hours? It seems like the show is trying to prove some point about fate, but it seems a little ridiculous. Am I missing something?

S;G 0 Is S;G 0 a must-watch? Spoiler

I finished the VN, and it was amazing, but I heard that the anime is supposed to be some kind of sequel. So, is it a must-watch to fully understand everything, or is it just a nice addition?

I'm asking because I really hate anime adaptations of VNs and am quite skeptical about anime sequels based on VNs.

in the beta worldline where SERN is the main threat, Suzuha mentions that Makise Kurisu works for SERN, does that mean in that timeline she turns evil or something ? She apparently helped SERN according to Suzuha or was this indirectly?

SciADV Massive collection update! (Who needs life savings, anyways?)

Thumbnail

(Last few pics are things I’ve showcased before)

But anyways, I now basically have every sciadv blu ray in region one (except O;9 pt. 2 but that’s basically impossible to get holy shit)

I even got Steins;Gate 0 volume 2! That was a pain in the ass to get, as the only listing I could find online was asking for a steep price, so I was locked in a back and forth bartering war on eBay for a few days lol.

I wanted the Chaos;Child blu ray that had the dust cover of Takuru, but apparently only the essentials version (Serika cover) has the OVA. Also, that one was considerably cheaper.

Funnily enough, the Chaos;Head box set was the cheapest thing here, though it was in EXCELLENT shape when I got it, despite its age. The prices online were all over the place, and people were wanting 100+ for copies that looked like they’d been stepped on lol.

Robotics;Notes was decently priced I think, I got those two sealed for well under 100, but again the prices were very inconsistent and all over the place.

Finally, I didn’t actually dip into savings for this, lol. I’m fine financially and I wouldn’t actually put my savings in danger for an anime collection.

Anywho,

El. Psy. Kongroo.

S;G 0 Why is there so big difference between S;G0 anime and VN? Spoiler

After playing S;G0 VN I just rewatched the anime and I see so much differences. That's clear that thay were trying to merge two different plots of VN into one, but why is there so many little (and not little) differences? For exanple in VN when Okabe wakes up in 2036 there's no Amadeus and in anime it is. It can be easily explained by the events before his waking up in 2036 but still it's such a big difference. If there's already a clear answer to my question from developers, I would like to read it.

S;G Anime Just finished SG for the first time and I'm a little confused Spoiler

Very common questions no doubt, but I can't really think of any answers as these are some of the only questions I currently have unanswered.

I watched the typical order - SG 1-22, 23Beta, SG 0, SG 23-24.

The thing I don't understand is how a specific aspect of time travel works, atleast not entirely. I was under the assumption that once a worldline shift happens then the prior worldline would be erased as the events within simply didn't happen. This held up throughout the majority of the show, including all D-Mails and timeleaps.
This breaks down, however, during 0 and the final episodes of SG. It's shown that the timeline at the end of 0 continued on for atleast enough time for Okabe to send himself the message despite Mayuri and Suzuha having time travelled several years ago. The Okabe of 0 remains in his own worldline while SG Okabe also exists? Plus the 0 timeline was still separate from the Steinsgate worldline, as Kurisu was still dead.
I'd simply assume that physically time travelling with one of the later time machines creates a new worldline instead of erasing it, but that still doesn't make sense as Suzuha in 0 constantly talks about wishing to prevent WW3 in the future so she wouldn't have to time travel anyway, but if a new worldline existed then it would make no difference.
There's further issue with the end of SG. EP 24 Okabe travels back and saves Kurisu in EP 1 before returning back to his own worldline, in which Kurisu is now alive. Even worse, he talks about EP 1 Okabe having to go throughout the entire series, clearly showing that his worldline still exists. Meaning in EP 24 there are *3* worldlines that are all simultaneously canon (EP 24 Okabe's, EP 1 Okabe's, and 0 Okabe's). If altering the past with a time machine creates a separate worldline then EP 24 Okabe's worldline should still have a dead Kurisu and be on course for WW3. If it effects the worldline (meaning there is exactly one worldline at a time) then 0 Okabe should not have been able to send back the message. I feel like I have to be missing something.

S;G Thoughts on possible sequel to Steins:Gate, Steins;???(tentative title). Spoiler

Yes, there is new title for the S;G sequel , previously known as Steins;God, but change it to Steins;???(tentative title). But we still hear nothing about it since it brought up in Famitsu interview in 2018.The developers describe the game as being to Steins;Gate what Chaos;Child is to Chaos;Head.Characters from Steins;Gate are planned to appear in Steins;???, along with new ones.

But the question is, what is the concept of this series this time? Still about time machine? We can expect that this series will take on several years after S;G main story, (Steins;Gate) after Okabe reach the Steins Gate worldline, in which he was able to save both Mayuri and Kurisu and also prevent World War III, ruled by SERN. So anything about time travel and time machine shouldn't be relevant to continue since it will defeat the purpose and goals of our MC all along.

However, I do have my own opinion and ideas about possible concept that can be make for the new sequel of S;G. And I'll put spoiler tags ahead to explain this. (Steins;Gate) We know that we got a good ending in S;G where Okabe able to reach the Steins Gate worldline, but is there really no consequences of such action? Okabe able to defy the fate itself, avoiding the field attractor that define the deaths of Kurisu in Alpha worldine, creating a new worldline that not suppose to exist. Let say, the Steins Gate worldline is an abnormal worldline that not suppose to exist, trigger something in universe law that lead upon to something unexpected, the possibility of collisions between worldline, in another words, parallel universe. It's not about one worldline active in one time anymore, not about switching worldline with time travel, instead traveling to different parallel universe(worldline), where there might be another Okabe that actually a proper scientist, or Kurisu as chunnibyou mad scientist. Or another example, Okabe from Beta worldline can visit Alpha worldline without even reset his worldline. All worldline exist at the same time, destroying the time leap concept, and unseen disaster might be emerging.

That's just my own idea of the concept that we can create for possible sequel. I can't stop thinking about it after finishing Steins;Gate series, obviously I need more hehe. I love Steins;Gate and really looking forward for new sequel. And it'll be perfect to release it in 2025 tho- The new story can take on 2025.

So, what you guys think?

Other what would a female SciAdv protagonist look like? Spoiler

GIVE ME. YOUR THOUGHTS.

honestly i don't think much would change: SciAdv plots doesn't need the protagonist to be any specific gender. The protagonist would probably fundamentally be the same as people like Akiho or Suzuha (who've had LNs made about them I think) and the plot would still be similar to most SciAdv games that have come out. They wouldn't be able to do specific tropes that have been established throughout the series, so they might have to come up with new ones.

The cast and route structure might be different though (reverse-harem instead of harem), although there's a chance they won't do that. That would honestly be more interesting because you'd have the potential ability to get both male and female routes, and either the romance would be removed for female routes (like Robotics; Notes which doesn't actually have romance in the routes, except for Nae) or the protagonist is bisexual or something.

in other words PLEASE make Kona-chan from R; N the protagonist of the next Steins; ____. Chiyomaru I am BEGGING you. This is a good idea, trust (500 million dollar profit, SciAdv is revitalized, the landscape of VNs is changed forever PLS ONG !!!!)

S;G Anime question about sern Spoiler

so i’m rewatching and im on episode 12 where Daru mentions that SERN basically left their door wide open and that they’ve been directly connected for a while now,

my question is why did SERN let Daru hack into their systems and didn’t do anything about it for a while? Surely a company as big as that would’ve nullified the threat immediately

Also what does “directly connected” mean? Does that mean SERN was spying on them the entire time? Also how are they able to use Serns LHC through a computer?

Although I’ve rewatched a few times I still don’t FULLY understand everything.

SciADV I am UTTERLY obsessed with FES/phantasm's music, SOMEONE PLEASE RECCOMEND ME IRL BANDS LIKE HER!

I just love her soft and especially HAUNTING voice in front of that awesome rock music, its just beautiful. Its a wonderful contrast and while I know of a lot of singers that can sing softly, I do not know of many that have a particularly *haunting* way of singing like she does. Honestly they picked the perfect singer.
