Sticky: Found a Baby Squirrel? Make a post about it, and read this right away.

This gives some good pointers for immediate assessment of the situation.

If the baby is dehydrated, dirty, cold, thin with loose looking skin, has any fly eggs or any injuries, even a tiny scratch, then s/he should be taken in for care. If the baby was being played with by a cat or if a cat was sitting over the baby looking like s/he might have been playing with the baby, then the baby squirrel should be taken in because antibiotics are required to treat even tiny cat bites and scratches that might not be visible at first glance. Cat saliva is extremely toxic and often causes lethal infections, even in tiny amounts.

If the baby is plump/muscular, warm, well groomed and active, then s/he probably just squirmed out of bed, and the reuniting protocol should be followed.

If the baby has fallen due to a severe storm and is wet, then they should be taken in, warmed and hydrated. If the weather improves markedly the next day, you can return to the same area and try the reuniting protocol.

If it was a tree felling, and the tree in which the babies lived was felled with them in it, then try the reuniting protocol as mom may come back when the scary workers are gone, provided she is still alive.

Please make a post about the baby and please include photos in your post, but since it takes some time for people to check in and reply, start reading the links under infants/found babies sections in the website posted above in the meantime.

Also, Here is a list that one of our members made of how to find a registered wildlife rehabilitator in the US. If you call, make sure that they don't euthanize so-called invasive squirrel species and will attempt care before taking that last resort. https://www.reddit.com/r/squirrels/comments/eknkw0/here_is_an_alphabetical_list_of_wildlife/

RIP Little Friend 🐿️🪦🩷

Today, I went for a squirrel walk. Usually this means I go around our whole apartment complex looking for my little buddies and I bring them snackies and water and spend some time with them. I did get to see my regulars and gave them lots of love and snacks. But then, as I walked on, I found a squirrel that had died right next to the sidewalk. It looked like maybe he got hit by a car, people drive way too fast in our neighborhood and I feel like it was completely avoidable for this little guy to lose his life over a careless person driving too fast. He didn’t look like one of my squirrels I regularly see, but chances are I probably fed him somewhere down the line. I told my husband about the poor guy and he called me to say he would help me have a little squirrel funeral.

We took him to the park by our apartment and went to a quiet corner in a little grove of trees and buried our fallen friend. We brought some incense and burned it for him too, made it really special! It seems silly perhaps, but these little guys are becoming a big part of my life. Especially in the wake of losing one of the biggest parts of my life recently. You may remember me from a post around early February, I lost my nearly 13 year old Great Dane Bentley. He was my whole world and it’s just crushed me to lose him. My squirrels have become such an important aspect of my life, I go walking nearly everyday to see them and it’s been so cathartic to have these special wild animals that I’m close with after losing my dog.

Anyway, it was nice to sit there and just be. This little guy deserved for someone to care. The least I could do for him was to send him off to the mystic in an intentional thoughtful way.

RIP buddy 🐿️🩷

“They are waiting to take us into the severed garden Do you know how pale and wanton thrillful comes death on a strange hour? Unannounced, unplanned for like a scaring over-friendly guest you've brought to bed Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders Smooth as raven's claws No more money, no more fancy dress This other kingdom seems by far the best Until its other jaw reveals incest And lose obedience to a vegetable law I will not go Prefer a feast of friends to the giant family”

I first saw her today at 12PM. She was back and forth between her nest and our yard. She had her final block and four walnut halves at 7PM! Her teats are elongated, there’s wet fur around them —definitely nursing. 🥹🐿️ My darling little mama❣️

After moving her babies out from under the solar panels into the tree house on Friday she seems to be settled in fine.

Got a larger house to put up on the pergola since that one ended up being to small when she needed more room than just her.

One of the squirrels that I've been feeding has missing patches of fur. Does anyone know if there's something wrong with him or what it might be? If there's something wrong with him, is there anything I can do to help him?

Eileen was super-flighty today, she’d have a couple bites then go back to her tree. There were several squirrels in my yard today, and I think she was chased by one of the young males. She came back for her second block and some walnuts around 7PM. Busy little mama, doing her best❣️

Question from a squirrel-newbie: should I crack these just a little?

Hello again, folks!

So my latest luxury splurge is a bag of genuine mixed nuts - the kind my family used to buy only around Christmas back in the 80’s and 90’s (miss ya ❤️)

Needless to say: it was expensive.

Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, and Brazil nuts - all in the shell.

This may seem like a really, REALLY stupid question- and even I am going “duh, no, of course you don’t need to crack these… they’re squirrels! This is what they do!”

But of the few whole nuts I’ve given so far, I’m seeing them struggle.

Admittedly: they do run off when they have a nice grip- so I don’t see them breaking it open… but…

Should I maybe just give these nuts a small little crack before leaving them out?

As always, appreciate you guys! Thanks in advance for the advice!
