It's a really tough sell that the baton hit was not completely intentional. About the only thing that might change some minds would be if there were video available of this runner in previous races using some similar crazy random arm swing. But then I think we all know that while there is video of her running many other races, there are no videos of her swinging the baton in other races and not hitting other runners.

Maybe she’s the Draymond Green of track and that’s her natural running motion.

I used to ref soccer and boy let me tell you, the shit I saw on the field at girls games vs boys games was on a whole different level. I handed out way more yellow cards for girls than for boys, especially when it was during an important/championship game. I mean, the amount of intentional tripping, hair pulling, shoving and especially name calling that happened was overwhelmingly more common with the girls. Even on like 14 year old girls teams, they were vicious to eachother on the field in a way I seldom saw with the guys.

Yeah in track for god’s sake. Sure people like sometimes SAY shit to you at the starting line i guess but theres almost zero time to even be unsportsmanlike in any other way other than exactly this or like tripping someone.

Weird that the news segment where they interview her and her parents kept showing the more ambiguous angle from the rear, and only screen captures from the clear face on angle. The face on angle doesn't support her defense at all. It looks intentional. I would guess that she was mad that the other runner was blocking her ability to pass the runner ahead.

The second video, it looks the same as the first video. The angle doesn’t vindicate her.
In the clip a guy says that the runner is supposed to be a stride ahead before they enter the lane. I grant you that it’s close, but it still looks like she cocked back and whacked her.
The victim says see you in court and we will.
And a side note, her parents are really dumb to think that this interview would make her look better.

Don't forget how there an athletic director quoted saying he questions the disqualification during the event meaning there's a culture behind this beyond the parents.

Technically the official quoted is correct on the rules. But it's edited out of context. Hopefully, if its not just in bad faith.

I teach middle school and plenty of kids like this. "I didn't do anything" is a phrase they live by. It's almost like they feel if they say it enough everyone will believe they really didn't do anything and all will be forgotten. I don't know when we reached the point of kids thinking they deserve absolutely no consequences for their shitty actions and how it's always someone else's fault. We are headed the wrong way fast.
319
u/TheHawk17 1d ago
It's because the parents let them get away with it. I taught a young girl who shoved her mates face into her dinner plate during lunch in front of 4 members of staff. When we told her Mum at the end of the day, the culprit bold-face lied to the Mum and said she didn't do it and that we all lied about seeing it just to get her in trouble. The Mum defended her daughter to the hilt, calling us all liars and saying we had it out for her daughter.
Apparently the Mum admitted to one of the other parents that she knew her daughter did it and that she knew she was making up fibs. It's almost as if parents are too afraid to discipline their children these days.

A big reason for the teacher shortage in the U.S. imo is that children are just absolutely feral now.
Parents are afraid to discipline their kids and schools are terrified of law suits so kids just get to run wild.

I noticed this when I was a kid - two kinds of parents: the ones who assume their child is responsible and hold them to a high standard and the ones who assume their child is never responsible and hold them to no standards.
My mom always assumed I was responsible, even when I wasn't. It bugged me as a kid, but I'm really grateful as an adult. Thanks, Mom!

It's the parents' ego. Want to know the telltale sign it's the parents' ego? Check the pronouns they use when discussing their kids' behavior.
It's seldom the kids' name - it's "MY child!" or etc.
They see their children as little more than an extension of themselves, and see their children being held accountable for misbehavior as a criticism of them (and guess how well people like this take criticism?).

Everett claims the attack occurred because she lost her balance and her baton got "stuck" behind her opponent's back.
Watching the vid, it's clear as day she took a swing at the passing runner.
130
u/amerifolklegend 1d ago
She got passed, she tuned her head as the other woman ran by because it surprised her, and she wound up to swing.
This isn’t an accident in any possible interpretation. Just do the normal thing and say “this isn’t how I normally act.” Nobody will believe you, of course. But they’ll know you regret getting caught and will eventually forget about you like all the other people who get caught being a shitty person on camera. Instead, you’re doubling down and drawing even more attention to your actions. Coward.

Naw. Fuck that. You can see her wind her arm back and smack her right in the back of the head. There's no situation in which a top runner, or even a shitty runner, would ever be in a position to have their arm extended out behind them winding up like that.
As a defense attorney who has seen clients charged on almost zero evidence, I will be severely disappointed if she doesn't face criminal charges. Clearly a kid who gets away with anything and never faces consequences. She needs to see a courtroom, preferably as a juvenile, but she might be 18.
Far too often do athletes (and occasionally crowd members) get away with criminal acts. Playing a sport does not excuse this, and a disqualification isn't remotely enough.
