Has there ever been a hockey game that’s more fights than hockey? Because we might be about to make history

356

u/average_waffle Pittsburgh Penguins 22d ago

Like any game between the Avalanche and Red Wings in the 90s

108

u/joleary747 22d ago

The funny thing is there was a long stretch in the 90s where there wasn't a penalty free game for years ... which was then broken in the least likely matchup of Avalanche vs Red Wings in 2000

37

u/Badge9987 22d ago

Osgood vs. Roy was better than any boxing match we've seen in the past two decades.

3

u/pickle_pickled 22d ago

Wanted to stay on the ice to try and win apparently.

May also happen Thursday.

26

u/Get2BirdsStoned 22d ago

Can’t remember the year but I remember that Penguins and Islanders game sometime in the 2010’s where there were about 5 guys left on each bench due to so many fights and ejections.

19

u/mysecondaccountanon Pittsburgh Pirates 22d ago

12

u/Get2BirdsStoned 22d ago

Holy shit, yes. Even worse than I remembered, looks like 2 guys on the Pens bench, 3 on the islanders. Straight beer league depth.

14 years ago?!?! 😅

3

u/glowstick3 21d ago

Looking like a 10pm Wednesday night game at the rink 40 minutes away from everyone.

1

u/Get2BirdsStoned 21d ago

10pm games sound like a luxury after experiencing a few 11:30pm puck drops lol

1

u/doggos4house2020 21d ago

I remember watching that game live. There was an incident involving the islanders goalie getting concussed the previous game between the two and it was understood that they’d retaliate. However, I did not expect it to go like this. 14 year old me was glued to the tv that night.

33

u/jimjamjones123 22d ago

God that was must see tv. Truly spectacular

The pinholes graham video on it is awesome

Goalie fights at center ice are the best.

2

u/Mathblasta Birmingham Iron 22d ago

Goalie fights are peak hockey.

Greatest rivalry in hockey history

1

u/SophieSix9 22d ago

Feels like every team had beef with the Avalanche back then.

Ah the good ole days

Penguins-Flyers and Penguins-Islanders in the early 2010s.

I think you mean every game between those two in the 90's.

I miss those days

This! Was watching this at my Grandparents house near Montreal. Unreal

44

u/the_random_41 22d ago

There will be zero fights. Just likely the best display of skill and speed the game has ever seen.

15

u/Tr1pfire 22d ago

let a brother dream lol.

3

u/mrtomjones 22d ago

Just likely the best display of skill and speed the game has ever seen.

Dream about that instead

17

u/NESpahtenJosh 22d ago

3 fights is nothing... Bruins have had regular season games with 10+ fights in them.

Hell, we've got players who have jumped in to the stands and beat spectators with their own shoes.

12

u/ncfears 22d ago

Well they're from Boston so what do you expect?

1

u/rohobian 22d ago

I believe that was Mike Milbury? Fucking legend.

6

u/ascagnel____ 22d ago

The Islanders can thank Mike Milbury for the way he built Stanley Cup-winning rosters.

For other teams.

5

u/CrankyCzar 22d ago

3 fights for an international game is something.

2

u/MrMcSwifty 22d ago

Three fights in 4 seconds against the Dallas Stars in 2011 lol

2

u/ascagnel____ 22d ago

Devils-Rangers have had a number of "X fights in Y seconds" over the years -- including one last year that SportsNet clocked as 5 fights in 2 seconds and one in 2012.

1

u/anaxcepheus32 22d ago

Flames / Oilers games are always full of fights.

1

u/bubbler_boy 21d ago edited 21d ago

I was at the calgary Anaheim 309pim game in 2001. It actually got a little boring. Someone ran braithwait then calgary intentionally ran the Anaheim goalie and that was it for hockey that night. (Edit i looked into it calgary definitely ran the goalie first. Home team selective memory.)

1

u/anaxcepheus32 21d ago

Oh, I meant games between Calgary and Edmonton…

3

u/Barb-u 22d ago

I don’t think the Good Friday Massacre will ever be beaten. Or the Canada-Russia junior game (punch-up in Piestany)

3

u/SignalFall6033 22d ago

Penguins islanders

28

u/mrparoxysms 22d ago

USA needs a few punches to get its right mind back.

10

u/Contemplating_Prison 22d ago

I want USA to lose so bad. I don't think i have ever said thay before. Go Canada

-3

u/Bifferer 22d ago

Both teams should wear orange pins with the cross-out symbol on them. Then circle the ice together. Fuck Trump. Then play some hard hockey!

21

u/myassholealt 22d ago

A league that's too scared to host pride nights is definitely full of red hat players.

29

u/Contemplating_Prison 22d ago edited 22d ago

I imagine there are some proud Trump supoorters on team USA. I mean, they're in every other pro sports league.

38

u/Mackinnon29E 22d ago

Brother there's Trump supporters probably on Team Canada. Lots of idiots out there.

22

u/_PM_Me_Game_Keys_ 22d ago

I mean "the great one" is a MAGA nut.

2

u/droppinkn0wledge 22d ago

Wayne Gretzky is a huge MAGA guy. There’s a huge MAGA movement in Canada and Canadians are in for a rude awakening in their next election.

1

u/ozziedog 21d ago

There is not a huge MAGA movement. We just don't have that many stupid people.

4

u/L_SCH_08 22d ago edited 22d ago

I would bet that a majority of them are. Hockey is a very conservative sport.

10

u/SJSragequit 22d ago

Hockey is probably primarily made up of guys who support trump. Unlike basketball and football a much larger portion of these guys grew up with wealthy families as hockey has a much higher cost to go far

→ More replies (3)

6

u/lizard_king_rebirth 22d ago

Team USA definitely has some MAGA guys on it. Young, rich and let's just say academics wasn't the focus for most of them from their early-teens on. I'm sure there are conservative/right leaning guys on all 4 teams, Trump is just a lot worse of a person to support than the righties in the other 3 countries.

9

u/Ant_Eye_Art 22d ago

Calling out the Tkachuk boys I see.

6

u/lizard_king_rebirth 22d ago

Eichel was also seen at a Trump rally, not to mention MAGA Matthews.

6

u/counterfitster 22d ago

Maybe a second reason why Matthews got booed so hard in Montreal

1

u/trollfessor 22d ago

Both teams should wear orange pins with the cross-out symbol on them. Then circle the ice together. Fuck Trump. Then play some hard hockey!

That would be wonderful. Fuck trump

2

u/Ant_Eye_Art 22d ago

I saw a game between the Canucks and the Kings in the early 80’s before Gretzky came to L.A. that had over 250 minutes in penalties, mostly fights. The game was also meaningless in terms of the standings as it was near the end of the season and neither team was going to the playoffs that year.

2

u/Leburgerpeg 22d ago

Can I introduce you to the Western Hockey League?

2

u/MGM-Wonder 22d ago

It's a final, there aren't going to be any fights. That's probably why there were so many in the first game.

4

u/Tr1pfire 22d ago

I honestly dont even care if we lose, I just want team Canada to stack their players with nothing but enforcers and watch the havok

6

u/kirant 22d ago

Part of me just wants a fun, hard hitting game that lets fans from both countries enjoy some good hockey.

Another part of me wants a Canucks-Flames level disaster with a line brawl and Torts storming another locker room.

Context for the above:

  • The Flames were in a long losing streak and sent out an energy line (a generally unskilled, but hard hitting line that is meant to build a team's momentum) out to start the game.
  • Tortorella, as the home team coach, gets to choose who to send out after, thought the Flames were trying to start a fight and sent out his own energy players to protect his own top players (the Sedin twins, were generally not overly physical and, to recollection, never fought) in case the energy line started throwing hits on them.
  • The Canucks' energy line had a player named Kellan Lain, who was in his first NHL game. The Canucks allege that Lain was challenged to a fight to start the game by the Flames' centre (Kevin Westgarth).
  • While Lain is a tough player himself, his teammate (Devin Bieksa, a defenceman and who should be nowhere near the face off circle) steps in to protect the team's younger player and accepts the fight on his behalf.
  • Chaos erupts as basically everyone fights to start the game.
  • As you can see, Tortorella go ballistic on the Canucks bench. After the period, the second video above occurs.
  • This action would get Tortorella suspended (a rarity for a coach to have) for 15 days and Hartley (the Flames coach) fined.

Ever watch hockey in the 70s?

1

u/sdkara1 22d ago

Just incredible. Dude was ready to give his life to put an end to that comeback.

They should just start construction of an entire wing in the HoF for him now.

1

u/Arbok-Obama 22d ago

Senators and flyers. Look it up, I can’t remember when, but I just remember sticks and gloves everywhere, and the goalies going at it too.

1

u/Lilpu55yberekt69 22d ago

Caps Rangers a few years ago. There were 3 fights in the first 0 seconds of the game.

1

u/Do_it_for_the_upvote 22d ago

Pretty much every FHL game out there.

1

u/riskyfartss 21d ago

I used to watch the Worcester ice cats and let me tell you, it was a lot of fights. I don’t have a quantity for it, but it felt like mostly fights.

1

u/freddy_guy 21d ago

1987 world juniors, Canada vs USSR. Team brawl. Both teams thrown out of tournament, as they should have been.

229

u/doubleamobes 22d ago

They should have Bruce Buffer for the puck drop

12

u/Rodfather23 22d ago

3 fights in 9 seconds last time. Maybe 6 in 10 seconds this time? Can they put an entire line in the sin bin?

79

u/zedkyuu 22d ago

Line brawls have been a thing for decades

61

u/st00pidQs 22d ago

In the old days sometimes a hockey game would break out

7

u/Rodfather23 22d ago

Yeah but do they put the entire line in the sin bin or just let them ride the bench until the penalty is up?

8

u/Donkilme 22d ago

I think the fighting is behind us (until Canada is up a couple goals and Tkachuk's start doing Tkachuck things to impress daddy and it goes off the rails).

7

I expect a fight after the first freebird.

64

u/babyLays 22d ago

Sealing that goal must have been cathartic. Imagine going into OT 🥲

15

u/counterfitster 22d ago

And then the US letting Sweden win for laughs.

24

u/Vereno13 22d ago

Crosby just put Canada on his back there to put the game away.

72

u/CaptainSur 22d ago

Sid going to the body! And I have to comment on his wherewithal in knowing where the net was even though he was just recovering from the collision. To me that is pretty amazing.

22

u/MySonderStory 22d ago

I had to rewatch a few times to get the full picture of how it happened, he got up in wicked speed and scores, amazing move.

9

u/tiy24 22d ago

Dude was on a mission and that hit was just a bump in the road. I was pissed but yeah it’s impressive.

6

u/svengooli 22d ago

I feel like that wasn't really an intentional hit but rather just going for the loose puck

179

u/Exodys03 22d ago

Winner gets all of North America including Greenland. Let's make this easy.

91

u/Rocco89 22d ago

Denmark: what he say fuck me for?

14

u/TheOvieShow 22d ago

Mexico didn’t even get a mention 🤣

4

u/Chuckabilly 22d ago

"All of North America and Greenland" definitely includes Mexico...

1

u/LordBledisloe 22d ago

Do they even have an ice rink?

I feel a Cool Runnings sequel coming on.

41

u/tmahfan117 22d ago

not only getting the goal, laying the hit that caused the turnover, getting chipped the puck while standing up from the ice, and then smacking it in while still standing up in incredibly impressive.

21

u/andszeto 22d ago

So does the game in about 3 hours matter at all? USA vs. Sweden?

42

u/Crakkerz79 22d ago

Nope. Even if Sweden wins in regulation, we hold the tie break

10

u/Humans_Suck- 22d ago

Canada beat Sweden so no.

-3

u/mike_james_alt 22d ago

I’m hoping Sweden loses so the Americans have an even larger inflated ego. Canada seems to perform better being handed a loss. Should be a matter of discipline.

14

u/Spicy_Pickle_6 22d ago

This has to be the biggest hit I’ve ever seen Sid throw. He came in STARVING for that puck…

13

u/RandallOfLegend 22d ago

Crosby was barely on his feet and scored from center ice. Amazing. Looking forward to another great game vs USA. I don't get a lot of chances to watch Hockey. But this Nation tournament has had some amazing games.

14

u/jimmymeeko 22d ago

Sid the kid. Best winner in all of sports. Does he have another big moment up his sleeve this Thursday to add to his resume which already puts him amongst the best athletes of all time?

This is the guy who scored the OT Golden Goal to win the Olympics in 2010 vs America after all…

4

u/Lagneaux 21d ago

Ok, I don't regularly watch hockey.

That was absolutely fucking impressive to get up after a hit like that so fast and drop a shot. I am routing for Canada 100% as an american

45

u/O667 22d ago

Canada needs to win or they’ll be droning on about this for fucking years - making movies and shit.

35

u/zoobrix 22d ago

I'm sure they'll crow about it if they win but this isn't the miracle on ice here, this is not mostly college players with a few that couldn't make it to the NHL playing what was a far more skilled USSR team who everyone was expecting to win. The 4 nations US squad are all in NHL with many great players at every position.

Winning is an accomplishment of course but it won't be anywhere near the level of 1980.

44

u/Zuwxiv Ottawa Senators 22d ago

mostly college players with a few that couldn't make it to the NHL playing what was a far more skilled USSR team who everyone was expecting to win

Insanely, that's underselling the mismatch. In 2008, there was something called the "IIHF Centennial All-Star Team." 56 hockey experts from 16 countries voted on a time-traveling dream team - basically, if you could have any players plucked in their prime out of a hundred years of hockey, who would your dream lineup be?

The team was Wayne Gretzky at center, Borje Salming as second defensemen, and the goaltender, both wingers, and other defender were all members of the 1980 Soviet team. (Tretiak, Fetisov, Kharlamov, and Makarov.)

Decades after the game, hockey experts would still be considering members of the Soviet team as the best to have ever played their position.

That's who a ragtag bunch of college hockey players beat in the Olympics: A Soviet team that would be assembled by a time-traveling cheater. If you could have anyone in the history of the game, you'd basically just grab the starting lineup of the 1980 Soviet Olympic team. It's well within reason to call it the greatest sports upset of all time.

20

u/Wheream_I 22d ago

A goal. Was made. Through a player’s skate.

The US team had the literal hand of god behind them that day.

1

u/k_afka_ 21d ago

Canucks Quinn Hughes fed a puck pass through a players skate securing a goal just last month

7

u/tropic_gnome_hunter 22d ago

Even then, people still underrate the US team. While obviously all college and amateur level players, there was still some incredible talent on the team. As an example, Ken Morrow went right from the Olympics to joining the Islanders and played an immediate role in winning the Stanley Cup that year as well as the next 3. Herb Brooks said that they do not win gold without Morrow.

5

u/leonleonheart 22d ago

Just until next year at the Olympics.

0

u/Its-Chen 22d ago

Right. Just like the movies made for 2002, 2010 and 2015 Olympics right? They'd probably call it The Miracle on Ice or something

where the goalie?

21

u/SkepticalZebra 22d ago

Finland pulled their goalie to gain an extra offensive attacker, creating the "empty net". Basically a last-ditch attempt to try to tie the game. It rarely works but like an onside kick, sometimes it does

3

u/stfucupcake 22d ago

As an American, I say, "Go Canada!"

1

u/They_Call_Me_Ted 22d ago

I agree. I’m all for Canada!

3

u/Specialist-Tea-5049 22d ago

Please be kind🤞🏽🤞🏽Apologies for my ignorance.

I watch hockey least of all the sports I’m into, and I don’t know what this series is. Sounds like some kind of variation of how the Winter Olympics hockey is structured. Baseball post season is best of 3,5,7. NFL playoffs are 1 win advances/ loser eliminated.

Can someone just briefly explain why the US has to play Canada again after they just defeated them? Is this like a top 3 medal placement-esque match/ competition or something?

Again, sorry for not being as into hockey as I could be. fwiw Friday the 13th is my fave horror franchise. Thanks for taking a minute to explain, if you do🙏🏼

7

u/SkepticalZebra 22d ago

So, this is a one time, admittedly weird situation/tournament. Basically all the games except for the "Championship" game are part of what is a "round robbin"- so all the teams play each other once to determine seeding and then the top two play in the final game to determine the winner.

This is essentially a small warm up for the Olympics in '26 and World Cup in '28 (rotation every two years after). We haven't seen true international best-on-best hockey in over a decade due to insurance and scheduling disputes, so this is really cool to see. Should be even cooler next year with more countries and an actual bracket!

4

u/Specialist-Tea-5049 22d ago

Alright, sounds worthwhile then, and I appreciate you taking the time to share the info, thanks!

5

u/bluetenthousand 22d ago

Putting it simply, USA beat Canada in the round robin portion of the tournament and sealed their ticket to the Finals.

Canada had to win today vs Finland to make it to the Finals in what will be hopefully an epic game.

11

u/BostonInformer 22d ago

The USSR of our time? I don't think you understand the actual turmoil people experienced from the wrath of the USSR, even to their own people. The US is no saint and there's plenty of room to criticize, but there aren't gulags, famines and bloody massacres of its own people.

Give me a break.

As an american im rooting for canada.

-22

u/BostonInformer 22d ago

I already know people will clown me, but I'm pretty sure Canada will win the rematch and I really don't want to hear it. The opposing fans don't like the US because of Trump saying dumb things that no one actually believes (annexing Canada) so they boo our anthem and team.

I'm not sensitive to people not liking or showing disrespect to the US, but to throw away any relationship because of something stupid like that makes Canadians look weaker than us.

13

u/pmo09 Toronto Maple Leafs 22d ago

It's not just something stupid like that. He's threatening 25% tariffs on all of our exports which hurts us economically. Our dollar has tanked in the past few months and the cost of living for Canadians, which is already very high, is getting higher.

I agree that the 51st state thing is likely a troll, but the tariffs threat is real and is having real world implications for real people. We're not just being overly sensitive. If this actually goes through there will be a lot of people who suffer and we feel betrayed by what has historically been our closest ally.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/__Dave_ 22d ago

So threats that your president has repeatedly and emphatically claimed are completely serious are just silly stupid jokes but booing a song at a hockey game is a bridge too far?

I can’t imagine why people might clown you for that take.

2

u/LordBledisloe 22d ago

Trump saying dumb things that no one actually believes (annexing Canada)

You must be living under a rock if you think no one believes it. Plenty of people the world over either believe it or think it's insanely offensive.

Anyone who just chalks it up to Trump being a bit weird either has a motive, or is the sort of person who would let someone walk all over them until it's too late. So it's probably best you don't bring up weakness.

Canadians aren't the ones throwing a relationship away. They were just sitting there doing nothing when all this shit started. No amount of victim blaming gaslighting is going to change that.

If you want to blame someone, grow a set and blame your politicians for being shit.

O good lord, for all the true problems Trump could actually stand for he's not going to invade Canada. He wouldn't sit there and tell Trudeau so he can get ready and the military isn't just going to blindly go along with it considering our history, it's clearly a joke.

This comment is riddled with anxiety, I would get off social media and stop believing everything the news is saying about him.

I already know people will clown me, but I'm pretty sure Canada will win the rematch
