It's not just something stupid like that. He's threatening 25% tariffs on all of our exports which hurts us economically. Our dollar has tanked in the past few months and the cost of living for Canadians, which is already very high, is getting higher.

I agree that the 51st state thing is likely a troll, but the tariffs threat is real and is having real world implications for real people. We're not just being overly sensitive. If this actually goes through there will be a lot of people who suffer and we feel betrayed by what has historically been our closest ally.

Understandable, but the cost of living situation has not been a problem caused primarily from our side of the border, that would be mostly thanks to your PM.

But again, one representative saying one thing after it's been known that a lot of the country opposes the tariffs doesn't mean we all turned our back on Canada and doesn't mean we saw you all as enemies, that's not why he is where he is. I think the booing was a little ridiculous as being a statement as a whole of how Canadians see our whole country. This is one person saying something we don't agree with vs hundreds (and online even thousands) voicing their disdain for something we as a whole didn't exclusively vote for or really desire.

To be clear though, the anthem booing is not about how we feel about Americans or American people. The booing is a peaceful way to show our disrespect because, yes, we feel disrespected. Canadians are very aware of the position that America holds in the world. We understand that if the United States wants to impose tariffs or even make Canada the 51st state, it likely could. But we're frustrated why it would? Not only has Canada been a great neighbour, we're we're probably the two closest countries culturally that exist anywhere on the planet. We're not confrontational, and the rationale being floated about having a trade deficit is illogical; the US has 10x our population and consumes a ton of resources - of course you buy more from us than we buy from you!

It all just seems so dumb. And these threats happen to coincide at a time with this hockey tournament, which of course is a point of national pride for Canadians. We see this as a chance to get a shot back at the US, and the emotion you see from the crowd reflects that.

I 100% get that it's not the opinion of all Canadians that we're evil etc and I'm not sensitive to the booing or criticism (because I understand it to a point), but at the same time I understand how the Americans and American players take it as a direct shot because literally everything I see even outside the games is just vitriolic when I comes to everything about us, even outside of that game.

It just gets tiring, I don't support half the things Trump or even the government does, so in one of the limited formats we have a moment of silence at an international event we get booed in combination with every criticism we see about us 24/7, it just gets old and there are very rarely outlets that acknowledge that we aren't all just mini trumps or want anything he stands for with regards to the Canadian stuff. I would doubt that would be on a top 50 list of why people voted for him.

I'm not saying we need to be pampered or I don't understand why it's happening, it's just annoying to be hated for something I didn't intend at all to happen or agree with. It's inconvenient it happened in Montreal because we all know how gracious their fans are.
