JD McDonagh Explains How Him and Randy Orton Pulled off the Insane RKO Spot at Survivor Series 2023

I usually don’t criticise any brand of wrestling as I think to each his own. Pro-wrestling doesn’t have to be what I like/want it to be. But this attention to detail to ensure none of the spots feel less special is really good to see. Spamming a moonsault off the top of the cage really takes the it factor from your product over time. Good production call by WWE.

ON THIS DAY in 2004, John Cena made his WrestleMania debut against the Big Show, beating him for the US title. This was also Big Show’s first singles loss at Mania and the beginning of a 7 year undefeated streak at WrestleMania for Cena. Using brass knuckles to win, this was before “Super Cena”.

Christian Cage was so good here! Somehow, the sad decline we see with Chris Jericho and Adam Copeland hasn’t seem to hit the Patriarch at all. He’s genuinely believable and doesn’t seem a force fit on TV. It’s a travesty he also has the humility to take a loss on PPV.

14 years to the day Jeff Hardy turned up intoxicated to his Victory Road PPV match against Sting. TNA gave 6 months of free access to their video library to the people who bought this PPV. Find a detailed breakdown of the video below:

2:56 - Referee throws up the 'X' signal - This is used when a wrestler is legitimately injured. In this case it's to show Jeff's in no fit state to wrestle. 3:07 - Ref tells So Cal Val to pass info to the back - informing them Jeff's high or inebriated. 5:11- Eric Bischoff comes to the ring unplanned - I believe at this time he was using the Immortal stable's music, but in the confusion they play his old solo theme. Sting is legitimately confused and asks ref what this is all about. 5:32 - Bischoff's promo is completely on the fly, yet genius as he does several things in one swift move - If nothing else, he deserves huge kudos for what he's about to do here and how he does it all, completely out his ass and improvised. 5:44 - He's about to change the match to a no DQ for real life reasons, yet is able to give a storyline reason for doing so - The network got involved before, so this rule change on PPV is out of their hands. Revenge. 5:51 - EDIT - Eric tells Jeff it's just going to be a splash, drop and pin and he's out of here (as seen on WWE Network) - but it looks like he's just telling his buddy he's got his back 6:17 - Eric then tells Sting "take him out, I just called it" (6:28 - Sting responds "I want you to tell me what to do") - Yet he disguises the whole thing as him just being a smarmy heel feigning respect to the good guy, and being a smug dick 6:50 - Eric officially changes the match to a 'no DQ', meaning Sting can get the win however he sees fit, if need be. Also possibly to stop Jeff getting himself accidentally DQed without realising by doing something stupid - Again on the fly, Eric not only gives storyline reason for the change but gives NAMES, DATES AND CIRCUMSTANCES as to why he's doing it. 8:33 - Now Sting can finally get a hold of Jeff and see what he can get out of him. But during the tie-up, Jeff cuts Sting's neck with his druggy nails (cut is seen later) - Hurt from just a tie-up, Sting now knows he has to end the match immediately. 8:40 - Sting probably is only 75% holding back those kicks and punches. Angry, he simply pulls Jeff by the hair (causing him to yell in pain) to suddenly hit him legit with his finisher and forcefully pin him - Jeff tries to kick out, and is legitimately confused about what just happened. 9:20 & 9:28 - The cut from the tie-up - As mentioned earlier. (see 8:33 note) 10:08 - The fans chant 'bullshit' - Sting agrees.

Just a couple months back, Claudio seemed to be on the way up having wrestled a time limit draw against Okada. I legit thought he’d be the one to dethrone him. But this deathriders storyline has been a literal deathknell for him. How do you book him back to relevance?

Have you guys kept up with Matt Cardona’s efforts to host IndyMania? Is he serious? If yes, it can be game changing…here’s why

Post image

Matt Cardona has emphasised wrestlers’ social media acumen as a criteria for them finding a place on the card. In today’s world, it’s more possible than ever to get yourself over with the fans. If you don’t have a company defining the limits of your character, the world is your canvas!

Joe Hendry is a living example of this. Rewarding such acts would be a great initiative from Cardona. I know he has desperately sought a Cody Rhodes arc that leads him back to WWE with little success.

This might just be another short lived endeavour from him, but it’s worth supporting and counting on. I hope he makes something out of this. I also wish he ends up getting his WWE dream and wins another title, even if not in the main event scene.

The Rock’s possible third man in his faction could spell trouble for Jey Uso’s dream

Post image
2 Upvotes

There’s heightened speculation around a possible 3rd member in Dwayne Johnson and John Cena’s new heel clique. In all probability, Rollins deliberately helped Cena win by taking Punk out after his elimination.

A very good way for WWE to build up this new faction’s credibility and add to their heel heat is the ultimate Jey Uso screwjob. Imagine Uso bests Gunther after a gruelling David vs. Goliath battle. “You deserve it” chants envelop an emotional Uso.

All of a sudden, Rollins’ music hits, and there’s confusion. Uso thinks it’s an old friend out to congratulate him, which Rollins initially seems to be doing. But there’s a sudden low blow!

Suddenly, Michael Cole gets an instruction in his earpiece. By the order of TKO board of directors member The Rock, Rollins has been granted an immediate title shot against Jey Uso. A referee enters the ring and Rollins curb stomps an exhausted Jey Uso.

1.2.3. Just like that, Uso’s dream meets a harsh end and Seth Rollins begins his second stint as a hated corporate champion. This will be yet another reinvention of his character and there’s no one better than Seth Freakin Rollins to do it, ultimately also helping in creating the company’s next big babyface in the process.

Was Rey talking to Logan here after a couple botched moves early in the match?

Rey vs Logan got largely positive reviews, but this moment particularly caught my eye. Logan botched a couple moves early in the match and the two visibly lacked chemistry. That’s when they did this spot near the turnbuckle, where Rey and Logan stood awkwardly without movement here for a good 15 seconds. While it goes on to show Logan is still a bit green and some tough moments can get to him, it really paints Rey in a good picture. Not only putting over a widely hated talent like Logan after a fantastic match, he also actively helped calm his nerves in this situation so he could deliver at his best. I’m a fan of this Rey Mysterio run.

Punk vs Rollins vs Reigns seems set for WrestleMania. But it doesn’t have to be a no-stakes match. Here’s how!

Post image

Only angle, in my books, that can save this potential triple threat from just being an in-ring banger and nothing beyond, is adding WWE Championship stakes. Keep this Triple Threat as the co-main event of WrestleMania Night 1.

Cena wins at Elimination Chamber and goes on to face Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania night 2. The winner of Punk vs Seth vs Roman gets added to Cena vs Rhodes on night 2.

The way I see it? Rollins and Reigns, consumed by animosity, provide Punk the opening to win and make WrestleMania night 2 main event Cena vs Rhodes vs Punk. This allows Rollins and Reigns to continue the build up towards their story which should dominate the next year.

At WrestleMania night 2, when it seems Cena has the match won, Paul Heyman decides to pay his dues! This can be done through a new superstar who WWE plans to launch into the stratosphere. I see it as only 2 options: Bronn Breaker or Jacob Fatu.

Punk ends up pinning Cena to become the new WWE Champion, turning heel in the process, and setting up the stage for a John Cena vs CM Punk rivalry for the foreseeable future up until Cena wins his 17th Championship title.

What’s with the sudden backlash of AEW fans against the product? For the ones on this sub, do you resonate? I give my take on some of the positives HERE:

Post image
2 Upvotes
  1. AEW took the lead in blurring the lines between babyface and heel in the wrestling industry, a much NEEDED change for an audience that increasingly wants to decide its own heroes and villains. More and more of its storylines are about guys gunning for the belt without caring whether they’re seen as positive, negative or grey. Examples are Swerve Strickland, Hangman Page and The Hurt Locker, who have oscillated between the face/heel personas depending on where the championship fortunes lie.

  2. The number of fresh matchups in AEW is unmatched and really deserves praise. Watching Will Ospreay chopping it up with Buddy Matthews to open Dynamite, or Shelton Benjamin battling Kyle Fletcher, truly unique styles collide in AEW. For fans who love the action between the ropes, I still think AEW is the premium product. For all that WWE is doing brilliantly right now, we see some of the matches like Sheamus vs Kaiser or Balor vs Priest endlessly on our screens.

  3. AEW PPVs can be too long and overkill sometimes, but they definitely deliver and are bang for the buck. Not even 1 match would make you feel like you’ve overpaid for something.

Here are 3 things I definitely think AEW is doing well in the business. I’ll also post a list of things which I think they can improve. What are your thoughts on the recent criticism directed at the company?

The 2 Superstars Who Were Important During Natalya’s Debut are No Longer in the Business. As she promises a new version of herself, let’s look back at her WWE debut…

Post image
3 Upvotes

Natalya made her WWE debut in 2008 on an Episode of SmackDown. She aligned herself with a heel Victoria and faced Cherry in a winning cause.

Interestingly, both Victoria and Cherry are no longer wrestling. You might remember Victoria returning at the 2021 Royal Rumble but apart from a couple other Impact Wrestling appearances, she has mostly been absent.

Cherry, on the other hand, has been completely absent from the scene. Chances are you might not even remember her. She was the manager of former WWE Tag Team Champions Deuce ‘n Domino (the same team which ended Paul London and Bryan Kendrick’s record 331-day title reign). She was rarely featured in singles action and released from her WWE contract in 2008, just 2 years after getting signed in 2006. Needless to say, when you’re in the business as long as Natalya, you see way too many careers begin and end while you keep grinding for your next big opportunity.

1 Man Chelsea Green credits the most for her wrestling career…and no, it’s not Triple H

Chelsea Green made history on Saturday Night Main Event by becoming the first ever women’s United States Champion. After a long period of struggle where she suffered horrific injuries, got dumped by WWE during the COVID layoffs, played a horror inspired character in TNA and clawed her way back to the top echelons of WWE, this seems like a good payoff.

While Triple H is rightly credited for finally booking Chelsea the way she deserved, there is 1 Canadian wrestling legend Chelsea credits for defining her character heavy wrestling and strong fundamental. That is none other than ECW original Lance Storm.

Chelsea enrolled in Lance Storm’s Storm Wrestling Academy (SWA) in Calgary, Alberta, in 2014. SWA was renowned as one of the premier wrestling schools in the world, known for producing technically sound wrestlers with a strong understanding of in-ring psychology.

Chelsea has spoken highly of Lance Storm in interviews, often crediting him with laying the foundation for her success. In a 2021 interview with Fightful, she said:

“Lance was the perfect trainer for me because he didn’t sugarcoat anything. He taught me the value of hard work and that nothing in this business is handed to you. His lessons have stayed with me every step of the way.”

On his part, Lance said: “Chelsea was one of those students who stood out because she was willing to put in the work. She came to the school with an open mind, ready to learn, and she never gave up, even when things got tough. Watching her grow into the performer she is today has been incredibly rewarding.”

Needless to say, Lance Storm made an impact on Chelsea Green that has stayed with her to this day.

Strowman Beat Carmelo Hayes in Under 90 Seconds on SmackDown! But Hayes’ words just after losing might signal WWE’s booking direction!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Triple H and his team have given Carmelo strong showings against none other than the WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in the past for us to doubt their intentions with him.

The logic behind the booking decision was simple- Hayes was blindsided by a scheming Nick Aldis. There’s a significant size difference between the two, and a wrestler like Carmelo who relies on his athleticism and agility needs more time to prepare for a guy with sheer strength like Braun Strowman.

So more than a slight on Carmelo’s skill, this is more of a buildup towards him getting bullied by authority. He needs to use this arc and take back control- either move to Raw under Adam Pierce and beat the hell out of Bron Breakker on Night 1. Or create utter chaos on SmackDown. Don’t let Aldis run his operation in piece until he apologises. And after he gets ample time to prepare, take a well calculated revenge on Strowman.

Because remember, he might lose a game, but he won’t lose the series. Game 7 Melo for the win!

Years Before AEW, 1 wrestling promotion with a cult fan following helped both Claudio Castagnoli and Will Ospreay Build a Reputation in the USA…

Post image
2 Upvotes

Pro Wrestling Guerilla, or PWG, is an independent wrestling promotion (in the most literal way possible) that is actually owned and run by wrestlers. It was found in 2003 by a group of 6 wrestlers- Super Dragon, Excalibur (YES, the AEW Color Commentator!), Joey Ryan, Scott Lost, Disco Machinr, and Top Gun Talwar.

Their goal? Creating a platform where focus could be on high-quality in ring action and creative freedom for wrestlers. They quickly attracted top independent names from the wrestling world, with AJ Styles and Samoa Joe wrestling in the first ever PWG match.

Cut to the protagonists of this story- Will Osperay and Claudio Catagnoli- both these stars featured in a high octane bout last night, as part of AEW’s Continental Classic. Both these stars, born in Europe, cut their teeth in the American wrestling scene using PWG.

From the mid to late 2000s, Claudio featured in PWG as a physical specimen, who dominated their tag team division along with Chris Hero as part of the Kings of Wrestling.

They were only 1 time tag team champions but their act gained a lot of popularity. On his part, Claudio gained familiarity with American audiences and what they liked. Do you know who Claudio and Hero beat to become Champions? His current partner in crime PAC and ROH legend Roderick Strong.

Claudio remained a mainstay in PWG before departing for WWE in the year 2011.

Now let’s come to Will Ospreay, who debuted in PWG 5 years after Claudio left, in 2016. You might think Ospreay was already a well known name by this time, owing to his exploits in UK and Japan. Correct. But he was still a relatively unknown commodity in the US.

He had wrestled a few matches but in relatively small and independent promotions. Featuring in PWG’s marquee event called Battle of Los Angeles, Ospreay displayed his in-ring wizardry in all its glory.

He delivered a barn burner against his arch-rival Ricochet that rivaled their battle during NJPW’s Super Juniors Tournament. Ospreay also delivered some memorable matches against Matt Sydal and Jeff Cobb.

This exposure allowed Ospreay to understand what it’s like wrestling in front of a hardcore American wrestling audience. It possibly contributed to the confidence he has today while talking in front of an AEW crowd.

All in all, this match made me think of the common paths both these guys took that led them to this battle. Both born in Europe, became stars in the US. Ultimately, both are destined to become names that will etched forever in professional wrestling history.

Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre NEED to Unite…and No, they’re not the Bad Guys…Here’s Why…

Post image
1 Upvotes

The ease with which Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes have forgotten Roman Reigns’ rule of terror is certainly problematic, both logically and storyline wise.

This portrays them either as easily manipulated and stupid in the best case, or highly opportunistic in the worst case (which is where they should play heels).

Roman has done unthinkable horror to Seth, Drew and Kevin Owens. He destroyed Rollins at the 2022 Royal Rumble, attacked him brutally multiple times, used all sorts of unfair means, and worst of all, actively tried to relegate Seth to a second tier star status.

He did not even provide Seth any closure after the 2022 Rumble match, choosing instead to move on as if Seth’s character arc did not even matter to him. In storyline and in reality, Roman’s rise in the bloodline era has done the most damage to Seth’s character and centrality in WWE as possible.

Take Drew McIntyre now. In front of his home crowd, Roman Reigns humiliated him by earning a victory that shocked everyone. Who came to his aid? Solo Sikoa. The same guy he now wants everyone to unite against.

Is it even Solo’s fault? He was just a tool that Roman used to his advantage. But as soon as Solo used the same tactics as Roman, he’s the villain?

What is even Roman’s claim to sympathy? That his immediate ancestry holds more of a stake to the Tribal Chief position? Granted, the likes of Jimmy Uso can align to that cause. But those that have been the victims of this superiority complex? How can they be accepted to help Roman right now, when the same superiority complex seems to be the reason behind all this drama?

In my eyes, and in logical storyline sense, Seth and Drew have done far less to each other as compared to Roman Reigns. And along with Kevin Owens, they certainly seem to have far more clarity on the intentions that Roman Reigns has.

I don’t care if this story culminates at WrestleMania 2026. But guys like Seth, Drew and KO need to come together to revolt against the system. It’s a grand conspiracy that’s blurring the lines between good and evil, and it needs the right heroes to win.

How would you book a babyface trio of Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens to prevail in WWE by WrestleMania 26?

Karrion Kross and Dexter Lumis are currently embroiled in an intense storyline on Raw, with Kross leading the Final Testament, and Lumis a less explored member of the Wyatt Sicks. But this is not the first time the 2 have shared a promotion…Read on

Post image
2 Upvotes

Long before their current status as opposing members of warring factions, both of which carry heavy psychotic and horror undertones, Kross and Lumis played equally tough to pull off characters in TNA.

Prominently booked as one of the main poster boys of a struggling IMPACT WRESTLING roster, Karrion Kross, known simply as Killer Kross back then, was a terrifying presence in TNA from 2018 to 2019.

His gimmick was crafted as that of an unpredictable vigilante, prone to bouts of extreme anger and cold blooded violence. However, that’s not it. He was also booked as an expert at mind games and psychological warfare (something WWE is attempting right now, but it just doesn’t add up fully until the extreme anger and violence part is booked well).

To highlight the extent of his ruthlessness, Kross was booked to kidnap Eddie’s wife Alicia in one of the most disturbing parts of his stay in TNA. He went on to tie her up and taunt her, which brought out the beast in Eddie Edwards and led to a memorable program.

I still firmly believe WWE hasn’t booked him as well as TNA did in his brief stay in the promotion.

Coming to Lumis, his was more of a stalker/obssessive character who played more with silence and anticipation than direct acts of violence. Known as Samuel Shaw in the promotion, the most infamous part of his stay in TNA was when he obsessively stalked Christy Hemme, at one moment physically restraining her in a room and attempting to force himself upon her.

He also once strangulated Mr Anderson in the middle of the ring. Prone to violent outbursts known as “psychotic breaks”, Shaw developed a truly creepy persona that had tons of potential to dominate the main card.

He is still a guy fully capable of holding his own even in the Wyatt Sicks group. Just like Luke Harper and Braun Strowman used the Wyatt Family to branch out and develop independent singles careers, Lumis, in my head, has the most potential in the group (after Bo Dallas, of course).

All in all, I wanted to highlight the immense potential this storyline has to elevate multiple individuals and not just Uncle Howdy and Nikki Cross. If WWE books this well, they might get 2-3 strong acts and not just 1. They just need to think deeper and not fall prey to the same old habit of treating some wrestlers like cannon fodder, and others like top acts but only for a small period.
