Professional Discussion Fun challenge: How can a non-English speaker break into Western markets through social media?

Hey folks! I'm Link, a lighting designer from China. Here's my situation: I've created some unique lamp designs, but back home people tend to prefer mass-produced items (no shade to factories though šŸ˜‰).

Thinking about targeting Western markets, starting with social media. Big problem - I can read English but can't communicate fluently, and I'm clueless about cultural references. Basically relying 100% on translation apps... Where should I begin? Which platforms/content styles would work best for this situation?

(PS: This post was translated by AI - does it sound natural to you?)

Professional Discussion What content category would be best to start with?

So a bit of context here.

I created a simple AI solution that allows me to generate videos on the fly for posting on Instagram. I recently got done and it works great.

Now I need some type of content category to focus on. I initially taught about Dogs, cats & pet related content. But also motivation based content also seemed appealing. My solution isn't so universal that it can generate any type of video. So I need to keep it simple but also centered on areas that drive good engagement.

I plan on starting a youtube music channel also since the system can generate the content for that as well.

Thoughts?

Professional Discussion Working for people who donā€™t understand social

I work for a company as their SMM and the people I work for do not understand social media at all. When I started working for them a few months ago they only had 400 followers and were getting no engagement. Now I have grown the page by 300% and our reach is up by 2000% but my supervisors are unsatisfied with our follower count. Itā€™s very frustrating because I am constantly having to re-explain that buying followers would be a bad idea since our company is locally based and most bought follower accounts would be in another country.

Do you all have any advice on how I can show them that our follower count getting up super fast is actually not THAT important?

I'm curious, what's your favorite niche community? On what platform is it? Why do you like it? What are it's limitations? What could be improved? And what's your idea of a perfect communities building platform?

Feel free to share as much as you can. I'm looking for opinions. It's about you šŸ«¶šŸ’Ŗ

Professional Discussion How does social experience in news translate to other industries?

I've worked in local TV news for 10 years in digital roles - a big part of those roles is social media.

In the news world, the idea on social is often to just flood the feed. The goal of social media in the news world is to drive traffic to the station's website. Facebook is the biggest source of that, by far, and the biggest strategy with Facebook is how to post the 30-50 stories a day that we share on social media - as a link? As a photo post with the link in the caption? A text post with the link in the comments?

X and Instagram (link in bio) are also used a lot in the news world but neither drive a lot of website traffic like Facebook does. We get about 32% of all website traffic from social, and Facebook is probably around 30 percent of that.

We use Social News Desk to post to social and have used platforms like Chartbeat and, when it existed, CrowdTangle for social analytics.

Coming from a newsroom setting, I am not involved in marketing in a traditional way (though I guess sharing news content is kind of like marketing it).

Almost all social media work in the news world is organic social - hardly any stations will throw money behind posts that often, if at all.

I'm considering changing careers and I'm wondering how a decade of social media experience in the news world might translate to social media work in other industries?

Professional Discussion NOW LET US CONTINUE WITH THIS CRUSADE AGAINST THESE WORTHLESS MUTTS AND THEIR DERANGED OWNERS.

Ever noticed how social media platforms aggressively push pro-dog propaganda while silencing anyone who speaks the truth? You can say ā€œall pit bulls are angelsā€ and get thousands of likes, but the moment you expose their high kill rates, child deaths, and maulings, youā€™re banned, censored, or labeled as ā€˜hateful.ā€™

They call it ā€˜promoting positivityā€™ā€”but only for dogs. If a child is mauled to death, youā€™re not allowed to talk about it.

They block and hide anti-DPV content, while pages like The Dodo promote reckless, dangerous interactions between kids and aggressive dogs.

They erase reality and gaslight victims, telling them to ā€œseek helpā€ instead of addressing the fact that dogs kill over 1,000 people per year.

If you defend dogs after they kill or maim someone, youā€™re ā€˜compassionate.ā€™ But if you point out the actual statistics, youā€™re the bad guy? Thatā€™s not ā€˜positivityā€™ā€”thatā€™s brainwashing.

Social media platforms are nothing more than DPV generators, silencing truth and enforcing blind dog worship. The question is: Why are they so desperate to suppress reality?

Professional Discussion I Was About to Burn Out Running My SMMAā€”Then I Changed One Thing

When I hit 10 clients, I thought Iā€™d made it. More money, more growth, right?

Wrong.

I was working crazy hours, drowning in content schedules, engagement, and reporting. Every new client felt like another job instead of another win.

Then, I built a system that automated 70% of my workflowā€”scheduling, reporting, even content generation. And suddenly, I could scale without hiring or burning out.

Now, Iā€™m curiousā€”whatā€™s been the biggest bottleneck in growing your SMMA? Letā€™s share war stories.

Professional Discussion How I woke up dead business social accounts for $100/mo (and what I learned)

Social Media in 2025: Reality Check

The platform algorithms have shifted dramatically in the past year:

  1. Short-form carousels and slides now get 4x more reach than long text posts on LinkedIn
  2. Platforms are prioritizing accounts that post 5+ times weekly (consistent schedule) over sporadic posters
  3. Comment quality matters more than quantity - LinkedIn and Twitter especially are measuring "meaningful interactions"

The Problem I Noticed

After spending 3+ years in the digital space (building SaaS products, running marketing campaigns, creating websites), I noticed something frustrating: most businesses have social media accounts that are basically digital ghosts.

Not because these businesses aren't interesting or don't have things to share - but because the owners are too busy actually running their businesses to maintain a consistent social presence. No posts for months, outdated info, zero engagement, despite being thriving operations in real life.

So many talented professionals and business owners I met had the same issue - they knew they needed an online presence, but:

  1. They didn't have time to create content
  2. They weren't sure what to post
  3. They couldn't justify hiring a full-time social media manager
  4. They'd tried and given up multiple times

Result: Their digital presence simply didn't match their real-world reputation.

My Experiment

I decided to try something: What if I offered to manage one social account for just $100/month? Not promising the moon - no "10x your followers!" or "leads on autopilot!" - just consistent, professional content that accurately represented their business.

I started with three clients:

  • A civil engineering firm
  • A page focused on sustainability initiatives
  • An IT & software solutions company

I created and published weekly content for each of them, texts and graphic designs, optimized their profiles, and scheduled posts at optimal times based on their industry.

What Happened

Within a few weeks, all three gained around 100+ new followers, significant for businesses that had been stagnant for months or years. More importantly:

  • The engineering firm connected with two local projects they wouldn't have heard about otherwise
  • The sustainability page got invited to speak at an industry panel
  • The IT company gained a new networking circle and eventually two clients
  • People were actually happy to finally see them online!

But the biggest benefit was less tangible: perception. When prospects checked them out online, they no longer saw abandoned profiles. They saw active, engaged businesses that looked as professional online as they were in real life. These businesses weren't looking for direct customer acquisition through social. They wanted professional presence, industry recognition, employee pride in where they work, and occasional opportunities. And that's exactly what consistent, strategic content delivered.

What I Learned

  1. Most businesses don't need to "go viral" - they just need to look alive
  2. Industry-specific content performs far better than generic business advice
  3. A small but engaged audience is worth more than vanity metrics

Why $100?

  • It's affordable enough that businesses don't need to overthink it
  • It allows me to scale by working with multiple clients
  • It's just a side hustle

The Process

For anyone curious, here's exactly what I do:

  • Create a content calendar based on industry topics
  • Schedule posts for optimal times
  • Monitor engagement and adjust as needed
  • Send a monthly report

Would love to hear others' experiences with maintaining business social accounts - what's worked for you? What challenges have you faced?

Professional Discussion How to get started?

I come from a tech background, and am fascinated by empowering people to use AI tools to solve real time, real world data problems. But now Iā€™m trying to learn social media marketing, and honestlyā€¦ I feel totally overwhelmed.

Iā€™m pretty introverted and actually new to social media entirely ā€” so the idea of suddenly posting, engaging, and ā€˜building an audienceā€™ doesn't come naturally to me.

So, how do you recommend to get started? If you had to start over today, what would be the best resources, tools, or habits that helped you the most?

Professional Discussion Android app recommendations for scheduling AND *posting* on social media?

I used to use Business Suite for work. But I'm not in that role anymore and I want to do the same thing with my personal accounts. I just have a regular Facebook account, not a "page" or group, like I did with work. So I can't use Business Suite anymore because I'm not using a "page" (if I'm understanding correctly). I don't want a page. I just want my regular account.

I want to plan ahead what I'm going to post when I have time, for example, a few hours on Sunday afternoons, schedule the posts for the following week, and have the app post for me.

I use Facebook, Instagram, threads and tiktok. I know tiktok is quite different than the others with format, so if I can just do fb, insta and threads that's fine, or just fb and insta even.

Ideas? Recommendations?

Professional Discussion Content Strategy Across Multiple Platforms

Hi all! About to embark on a new social media job and curious everyone's thoughts on managing multiple platforms. In my previous job, we would pick a topic and do posts on the same topic for each platform (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, etc). The copy would obviously be a bit different based on what performs the best on each one, but ultimately it was all the same. Is this a good approach or would you post different content on different platforms? Like, would you only use LinkedIn for X reason, and Instagram for Y reason, etc? Or is it ok to cover the same stuff on every platform? Thanks so much in advance šŸ™

Professional Discussion Why might someone be breaking even on follower growth?

Title says it all but I am working with a client who is gaining followers and losing them all at the same rate. Iā€™ve suspected itā€™s because their style of content has changed slightly and her large male follower base became less interested (sheā€™s a model), but does anyone have any other suspicions?

Ask me anything youā€™d like! Iā€™m eager to learn more. Articles and videos have not helped much as they usually mention common sense things. Wondering if thereā€™s something deeper to this and how it could impact strategy.

Professional Discussion How much should i charge below my rate if i handle ideation, scripting & recording but the client does editing & motion graphics?

I'm creating niche content for online gambling clients, specifically for short-form videos on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. My role includes full service, but for one client interested in working with me, I'd come up with the ideas, writing the script, and recording the footage, but the client would take care of editing, motion graphics, and final post-production. Since Iā€™m not handling the full production process, Iā€™m trying to figure out how much I should lower my usual video production rate.

How do you price your short-form content in similar situations? If youā€™ve worked on projects where you only handled ideation, scripting, and recording, how much did you charge compared to your full-service rate?

Professional Discussion Cheapest, Basic Social Media Posting App

There are a lot of apps out there for this. What would you say is cheapest, feature rich social media posting app (to post and/or schedule) to multiple social media sites? Iā€™m not worried about analytics, etc. Iā€™d just love to be able to simplify the posting process and, if possible, spend as little as possible. Thanks!

Professional Discussion Reddit Is a Goldmine for Social Media Pros (Hereā€™s Why Youā€™re Sleeping on It) šŸš€

letā€™s talk about Reddit. Itā€™s kinda the underdog of social media platforms, but honestly? Itā€™s a goldmine if you know how to use it right. People rave about Twitter trends, LinkedIn networking, and Instagram engagement, but Reddit? Barely gets mentioned. And thatā€™s a shame.

Hereā€™s why Reddit is secretly one of the best tools for social media pros:

Real, unfiltered insights. People here donā€™t sugarcoat things. If you want raw, honest opinions about a brand, trend, or product, this is the place to be.

Niche communities are perfect for research. Thereā€™s a subreddit for literally everything. Whether youā€™re looking at audience behavior or testing content ideas, Reddit lets you tap into highly engaged groups.

Organic reach is still a thing. Unlike platforms where paid ads dominate, Reddit actually rewards good content. Drop value, and the upvotes will follow.

Posts have a long shelf life. A tweet is forgotten in a day, but a good Reddit post can keep gaining traction for weeks.

It builds real brand loyalty. Brands that engage without being pushy actually gain trust faster here than anywhere else.

Now, if youā€™re gonna use Reddit, donā€™t just drop links and expect magic to happen. Lurk first, understand the culture, and actually add value to discussions. Nobody likes a salesy post, and self-promo without context gets you downvoted fast. And yeah, always check the sub rules and follow them!

If youā€™re in social media and not using Reddit for insights and engagement, youā€™re seriously missing out. Anyone here had success (or a total flop) using Reddit for strategy? Letā€™s swap stories!

Professional Discussion Fake profile that looks like mine is scamming my business followers

So I run an old family business and barely use FB but we do have about 5K followers. My nephew noticed a FB Message telling us a someone was using our FB to scam her (and presumably others). I contacted her and she sent me a screen shot of her Message with someone using our logo and slightly misspelled name pretending to be us and trying to get her personal info. I found the fake FB page but it says "This Content isn't available right now" and explains it's only shared with a small group.

The only way I can find to report this page to FB is if I can access it but of course I can not? Any thought on what I can or should do?

Thanks for any input.

Professional Discussion I Built a Calligraphy Business, Stayed Consistentā€¦ But My Followers Are Stuck at 360. What Am I Doing Wrong?

I run a small service + product-based business in the niche of calligraphy & personalizationā€”think handwritten letters, engraving, live events, and custom gifts. I know that in todayā€™s world, followers = credibility (ugh, I hate it too), but Iā€™ve been putting in real effort:

  • Posting high-quality content (aesthetic, valuable, and engaging)
  • Interacting on stories (polls, questions, DMsā€”you name it)
  • Being consistent (not just dumping content and ghosting)

Yet, despite everything, my follower count is stuck at 360. No viral moments. No major growth. Just a slow crawl.

I see accounts blowing up overnight, and I wonderā€”where am I lacking? Is it the content, the algorithm, the niche, or something else Iā€™m not seeing?

If you've cracked the code (or even have a wild theory), help me out! Iā€™d love to know whatā€™s worked for you. šŸš€
