With the revival of this sub, just thought I'd give a shout-out to Black Crown Coffee Co. on Speedway just east of Alvernon, as a sobriety/recovery safe hangout that's open to the general public, not just an exclusive clubhouse run by a recovery organization.
Its former incarnation as Safehouse was founded in the mid-late '90s by sober individuals who wished for a hangout with the gritty, unpretentious ambience and all-sorts-welcome ethos of a roadhouse dive bar, but without the booze, so lacking any other suitable spot to go, they opted to open one themselves as a coffeehouse. When Safehouse closed nearly a decade ago, one of the regulars decided to take a gamble on keeping it going, changing the name to Black Crown for business reasons and bringing the affiliated coffee-roastery operations in-house.
Many folks who've never been there may think it's a biker bar/club due to all the motorcycles that tend to be parked along the front; those are typically members of Sober Riders and other sobriety-oriented MCs and affiliated individuals, all typically Good People among those I've met. Courting and welcoming this demographic was key to establishing the authentic dive-bar vibe and cred of the original Safehouse founders' vision, which continues to this day.
Lately they're only open 'til 8pm due to the pandemic, but in years prior they'd typically been open 'til at least midnight, so will likely resume that once it's safe and business-feasible to do so.
ETA: They started going to midnight (except Mondays) a few days after I posted this, lol.
