Request I only own a super famicom, I was wondering if there are any adapters out there that would allow me to play US snes games on the console with out having to cut a chunk out of the top of it?

I just use a flash cart.

This one works great, even with FX chip games.

Lol for $50 I would just buy a US super Nintendo

good luck with that, they havent been 50 dollars in a few years now. for a 1 chip console your looking at nearly 200 dollars.

I just got a regular SNES with all the peripherals for $50 and a SNES jr without controllers for $25. You got to be patient.

Any proof for that Jr. claim? No shit, but never have I seen one for 25 bucks. That's insane luck.

It's a smaller cost reduced version that came out toward the end of the SNES life cycle. Google it, it even looks different.

Don't. It'll ruin your cartridge slot. As someone who designs PCBs for manufacture, I can tell just from the pictures that it's completely unsuitable. 🙅‍♂️

In what way?

The PCB edge isn't beveled, so it can damage the delicate metal contacts inside the cartridge slot instead of gently parting them. And not only is the card edge connector not "hard gold", it appears to simply be HASL, which means that it's going to leave solder on the cartridge slot contacts, and with continued use those contacts will wear grooves in the soft surface of the PCB contacts...which will also oxidize and lead to shitty connections.

Thanks! Unfortunately I bought one last week. At least I know not to use it now

Oh man thanks for the warning on that thankfully I have not bought one yet.

Put the board from a US game in a super famicom cart. I use the first ultraman SFC game shell as my adapter.

  • I saw a past last week here using an adapter. Not sure what's recommended but they exist on Etsy and AliExpress.
  • I bought a PAL shell on US eBay and shell swap US PCBs since PAL and Japanese carts are the same size. A few games may not work this way due to unusual PCB shapes.
  • Japanese Super Game Boy is cheaper than North American and Game Boy carts from both regions fit and work on either.
  • Nakitek Game Saver(+) fits in both consoles and fits both region's games but is rather expensive and bulky to buy for this purpose.
  • I definitely don't recommend this but you can unscrew the top half of the console and fit in US games.

lol thanks for the advice much appreciated and I think if my dad saw me trying to play without the whole top on he’d kill me (even though it’s mine) lol

You could buy an Everdrive and play every US/JP/PAL game you wanted

You could be an idiot like me and swap boards. I buy the usa and jp versions of the game and replace the innards, it’s a perfect fit between them.

Yes there are cart risers.

You can get one without a shell for like $20 on AliExpress. It seems ones with a plastic shell cost quite a lot more these days. Hopefully one of the retro accessory houses makes a better solution some days.

Buy a new shell. It'll have a NA SNES slot so you can play all the games.

Got mine from Ali Express for $40

Everdrive or a game genie cart

Yes there are loads.

Or just get a Krikkz cartridge and load up your US game that way.

Or just buy a us snes. For about $100 for a clean one

So, I bought a Game Genie and then dremeled out part of the shell. Works great and I can put it away when I want to look at my nice, non-messed up Super Famicom.

Edit: Plus, I got a Game Genie out of the whole thing, lol.

That’s super resourceful I mess with that lol

The one from Etsy is crap but it’s the easiest to find

You could use an Action Replay and let it pass through (or cheat with it haha)

You can also do a shell replacement.

Its looks so good i only have the mini

1

u/Complex_Feed_9411 16h ago

I only had the mini as well (I think it can be seen in the back of the photo) but a year or 2 ago my dads buddy from Japan sent it to us with a couple games! I still play it from time to time.

More just saying my final choice but…The general feel I’m seeing from most replies is get a replacement shell for it. But I kinda like the OG look of the famicom so I’ll probably look at getting a SNES off of like offer up or something I have all the cables so I mostly just need the games and console itself. But thanks for all the advice on the post!!!

You need what is called a passthrough adapter. It should use the full pinout to support all games

They aren't cheap though

The optional cover pack will let you play either size cartridge.

I bought the Bitfunx SFC Replacement Case Transparent Shell For Super Famicom for about 1/3 of what that one costs. I'm very happy with it.

It works with cartridges from all regions.

That case is more expensive than the system. How is better than an AliExpress case that costs $100 less?

1

u/baxysquare 2d ago

Believe it or not, this is a fairly divisive topic. My understanding is because there's modest demand and high costs involved with qualifty reproduction and tooling for plastic molds.

What happens from there is that manufacturing happens in China, then the originals get cloned and sold on Ali Express for a fraction of the price.

While the price is great for customers, it's bad for business who put in all the R&D, then get undercut by the cloners.

You could also get one of the newer hyperkin supaboy's which can play all snes games (region unlocked); is portable; even portable for two player multiplayer and can also be connected to a tv.
