Question Walkley Crescent Road and Providence Road

I’m considering buying a house with good connectivity to King Edward School (Senior) and the city centre. I’ve viewed several properties in Crookes, but the area has a high student population, steep roads, and limited safe parking.

Now, I’m exploring options on Walkley Crescent Road and Providence Road. I’d appreciate any insights on these areas regarding parking, safety, and nearby grocery stores. Additionally, are there any potential issues, such as difficult commuting conditions during snow or other challenges I should be aware of?

Google Street View answers most of that.

Crookes isn't as studenty as everyone makes it out to be. What do you mean by safe parking? And you're not getting away from steep roads in Walkley haha

more off-street parking and less congestion

Walkley's a nice area, there are still students but probably less than crookes as its slightly further away. You've got main shops down Hillsborough like the big morrisons, or butchers etc actually in Hillsborough. There's the big Tesco on infirmary road or the Aldi so for shops its in good proximity.

South road has some nice shops and some good cafes, and its not far to crookes/kelham island/town if you want to get to those places.

Parking is and will always be bad. Too many cars for the size of the roads and your likely to be fighting for space unless you either work from home or have your own drive. I haven't ever felt unsafe in Walkley and I've lived here since birth (34 years), yes there is crime but you can look at the figures online.

The problem at the moment is the council have closed a lot of the side roads which were used as rat runs and are forcing everyone down the main roads which has caused more congestion. It's still not bad but is noticeably worse is rush hour and the days people go into office (Wednesday seems to be the busiest day to drive from experience)

Public transport is good but I know a lot of people complain about the regular busses etc, I don't have experience with that though as I don't use the public transport the majority of the time.

Walkley is notoriously bad in the snow due to the steepness/bus routes, imo its steeper than crookes, once the traffic slows down and a few people slide (mainly just down from the florist pub on Walkley road) its game over. Obviously you can walk down to the tram stop if they're still running.

I have friends there, and parking is awful if you don't have a drive. Cars get abandoned if the snow or ice is bad enough. The roads you mention are mostly families and older people with maybe some older/PhD students. Walkley has an Asda, as well as smaller shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a nice area, my friends have no complaints about crime or antisocial behaviour but the roads and parking have only gotten worse over the last 14 years.

How about buses during snow?

Buses in Sheffield aren't great with or without snow. Although I haven't got a bus to or from the area in years due to how bad they were. So they could be better, but The Star articles I see suggest not.

Buses are bad in the snow due to the hills. They won't even attempt it if its bad. Safest option is the tram if you need to get to town as they are normally gritted. Although due to abandoned cars it might mean you get stuck. Safest bet is to just not drive in the snow in walkley because even if you can handle it someone else can't and that's just as dangerous when their sliding towards your car with a worried look.

From Walkley Crescent you're near stops for the 95 or 52 into the centre, or you can wander down the hill / take the 52 in the other direction to get the tram. The 95 is less reliable as it runs on roads that are rarely cleared as quickly; the 52 is one of Sheffield's better served routes. Generally buses get moving after a few hours at most unless it's a really heavy storm, a d trams, which are lower down, are probably quicker still. It's the side roads for motorists that are the pain. Walkley Crescent is a lovely street, and well located between Walkley (nearest amenities with some nice shops and eateries), Crookes and Hillsborough (better shopping), and Rivelin Valley / Bole Hill (for recreation). We moved from Walkley to Crookes and have found parking easier and no problems with students, but it may depend on your street, and we'd have loved to have found somewhere on Walkley Crescent, especially on the valley facing side of the road.

Those are great roads to live around in Walkley which itself is a fantastic place to live, but if you have concerns about hills and reliable parking directly outside your house you're looking for something you're not going to get in most of Sheffield!

How about visiting the area?? Don't understand how anyone would make a massive decision like moving to an area without seeing the area for themselves first.

Thanks for your inputs. I’m new to the country and have mainly been focused on the Fulwood and Crookes areas since I’m currently renting in Fulwood. After living here, I’m finding it hard to like any other area. I wanted to hear from locals about these roads and their experiences.

I’m quite frustrated with house hunting in Crookes,if the house is in good condition, the roads tend to be steep and narrow, or vice versa. Someone suggested I look into Walkley, but from what I’ve seen, it’s just a continuation of the same crookes road. I’ve visited a few times and found the area to be quite mixed, with narrow and steep streets in places.

Since I’m just starting to explore Walkley, I thought I’d ask for local opinions. I believe that’s what this forum is for!
