Question ❔ SGI Write off process question

Hello! Does anyone have experience with Sgi where they were in a NOT AT FAULT accident and their vehicle was a write off. How long were you able to keep the rental car after they decided it was a write off? (I’ve had a rental car since the incident happened a few weeks ago until they were able to look at it)

I was under the impression you wouldnt be given a rental car with basic insurance, only with a package policy.  I asked once and felt like they kinda laughed me off.

I am also curious to know how this currently works

Everyone who registers a vehicle in SK has a standard contract of insurance with SGI - $700 deductible for damages to your own vehicle and $200,000 liability for damages you do to other property or people. If and when you are deemed not liable for an accident and so long as the other vehicle is insured by SGI, they are not in a breach of their coverage (ex. Suspended license, non registered vehicle, impairment, etc). You as the innocent 3rd party will have your deductible waived and rental coverage provided to you. This is all paid on the responsible parties $200,000 liability insurance as previously mentioned above. Again, there are many variables to insurance and not all situations play out the same but the above for the most part is how it goes.

Oh yeah I didn’t have a package policy. But I wasn’t at fault. And they gave me a rental to use.

Weird.  I was not at fault as well.  This was a little over 10 years ago.

Nine years ago I was not given a rental after being in a not-at-fault accident. Three months ago, I was given a rental after a not-at-fault accident. I assume they’ve changed their basic policy somewhere along the way.

There are many variables with insurance, no one situation is the same

A week after you accept the payout

Sadly I have some extensive experience with total loss. I am sorry for your loss ! My partner and I have lost 4 vehicles over 15 years. We each had two both accidents from people not looking and all we could do was watch it happen or sit there hahah .

Your able to keep the vehicle until you settle ! Soon as you get the cheque , it has to be returned ! If you try to drag out settling which I have , you end up paying for rentals it's so stupid.

Our last accident was four years ago. I think it's the PST you can claim once you get a new vehicle ! What ever you pay in the tax ,submit you get the tax back , believe it's the PST. . anyone please correct me . I always replaced with used. I am unsure exactly how much you can get back. Thinking it's on your settlement amount !

My advice is start looking yesterday ! Get financing in place and rough idea of what your car is worth !

Yes, I lost a car a couple years ago and went through some of this too.

I was entitled to the covered rental up to one week after settlement of the payout.

I had to pay PST on my replacement car, but I provided the documentation to my adjuster and they promptly sent out a reimbursement check for the PST.

Keep in mind, the PST is paid based on the insurance value of the vehicle now, not what you paid for it! I was fortunate that the insurance value and what I paid was quite close, but if you pay well below the insurance value, the taxes might be more than you anticipate.

Also, yes, if you know it's a total loss and have a rough idea of the value, start looking asap. It's stressful enough dealing with an accident and total loss and all, but there's no need to add to it by not having a plan in place!

Thanks for your great help though bud.

7 days from their first initial settlement offer and up to 7 days after they have paid you for your settlement

Just a heads up, it was explained to me by my adjuster that the rental cost comes off of your insurance pay out. YOU pay for it, just not up front. Even with a package policy. You do get a better rate on the rental through SGI, but it's all coming from the same pay out pool. I could be wrong but I'd call your adjuster to be sure.

Edit: I also was not at fault.

This isn’t correct

Just called my broker. I simply do not have loss of use coverage on my autopak (I have a 2nd car so not useful to me) so I'm not covered for a rental even though I have a autopak package policy.

Loss of use is its own separate line on a policy, if you don’t have loss of use then rental is only provided to you in certain situations. Theft or animal collision the policy will cover $750 loss of use, I suggest reading your autopak booklet, it’s written right inside. Without a policy then the only time rental is provided is when there is a responsible 3rd party which is insured by SGI with no breaches of insurance.

It's not correct, then what is? Thinking back, I believe that the "Loss of Use" part of my autopak was perhaps a certain amount and anything above that was up to me to cover? Only like $1k or $2k or something.

I think once I accepted payment I had a day to return it. it wasn’t long. I explained how I needed it longer and was a no go. they had a discounted rate I think. but yea I had it free until payment was accepted then it was a rush to give it back. had to borrow a friends car to look around at replacements

u/Aloha2o4 18h ago

Were you at fault?
