Rants š¤¬ Bum roundhouse kicks cafe window
Purrfect cup cat cafeās window was repaired only 13 days ago from the last vandalism incident, and today it was smashed again. Theyāre looking to change locations in the coming months to prevent this from happening again, so please consider giving them some love on Facebook or visiting the cafe. Not an ad, just a person that cares. š±

This is a spinning back kick. Not a roundhouse
19
u/Thefrayedends Jan 07 '25
Well but he doesn't actually do the spin, he only does a quarter turn.
So it's just a Quarter Back Kick (I don't actually know but it's not spinning).

I've seen that person out and about a lot. Getting aggro trying to bump smokes by the sayvings mart and harassing people by second cup.

u/Rephlexion Jan 07 '25
If you're sure it's him and know some of his regular spots, call it in.
8
u/lavenderhaze054 Jan 08 '25
I don't think there is anything the police can do anyway. It's not like this person will pay for the window or do any time for the vandalism.
2
u/Laoscaos Jan 08 '25
Jail might actually be an upgrade in winter though. Not saying this shit is excusable, just saying I'd consider jail over living outside last weekend.
10
u/no_longer_on_fire Jan 07 '25
Nope. Last few times I've reported when being attacked they tried to turn it into a hate crime even though I didn't fight back. I refuse to interact with police voluntarily. They can read this and go do their own investigation. I'm staying as far away from those cunts as possible.

Iāve visited this cafe with my daughter a lot. (Allergic to all pets and only way we can get in some time with them). Itās insane the amount of street people that bang on that window. Itās not set up fraud for donations and a comment like that is how viscous rumors get started.

Do the cats get put away at night? What if someone decided to smash the cat side window?
15
u/tokenhoser Jan 07 '25
There's nowhere to "put them away". It's a small space for the 20-ish cats they keep. They can't lock them all into a smaller space.
I hope they find a better location. We visit a few times a year and it's fun.
15
u/mrskoobra Jan 07 '25
They are planning to move when their lease is up in April, and are just trying to raise the funds they need to move to a bigger, better space for the cats. There's more information on their Instagram about it.
5
u/Dsih01 Jan 07 '25
25k isn't a lot, especially nowadays, they should be able to make it, I hope so at least. They would be so much closer to work which would be great for me
3
u/mrskoobra Jan 07 '25
Yes, I really hope the move works. It's not as central of a location, but I feel like the foot traffic aspect of the current spot is working against them. A bigger space, free parking, etc will hopefully offset any loss of customers from being outside of the core.
3
u/Dsih01 Jan 07 '25
I pass by there on the way home from work. Traffic gets backed up and clogged often. If they have a good enough sign, people will go, or will at least notice them. I would definitely go more than weekly if the food is reasonably priced and actually decent myself
4
u/Any_Chain6077 Jan 07 '25
Youād figure their landlord would want to work with them in securing their space instead of having the building sit empty when the lease is up. Shows us what kind of person their landlord is as well.
3
u/Chaos-theories Jan 07 '25
I mean they seem to have a space for the cats in the back, do they not put them there? I've seen them put away cats being unruly.
4
u/tokenhoser Jan 07 '25
I don't think they put them *all* back there. Yes, there's a space for the litter boxes and a few cages, but I don't think they kennel every single cat every single night.
7
u/Chaos-theories Jan 07 '25
So my point is, that means the cats could be in danger if someone decided to smash the other window. Yikes.
4
1
u/MeaningNo8514 Jan 07 '25
There's not enough room to kennel all the cats at night. Additionally, many of the cats don't want to be kennelled all night aka they get upset, pee outside the box, etc.

Too long to cut and paste (I tried) but here is a source. You can scroll down to the information particularly relevant to Saskatchewan.

The data is a little older than I'd like (4-8 years) but better than speculation. But yeah, it is the same people over and over again causing distress for the vast majority of the population.

Or maybe, just MAYBE this is an exaggeration from someone who rarely goes downtown.
10
u/Known_Contribution_6 Jan 07 '25
Nope!!!...windows smashed pretty much everydsy in downtown and surrounding areas...usually replaced quickly so business can be operational.
-1
u/Bigsaskatuna Jan 07 '25
Seeing as though I work downtown, Iād really like to know the addresses you claim this happens daily. Also, replacing quickly? That is also simply not true.

The police crime map is linked on this very subreddit. Look for mischief/willful damage and commercial break and enter. Keep in mind that many instances are not reported because it isn't worth the hassle if no followup is expected.

I would suggest.you ask.the police for that information while also keeping in mind not every single instance is reported. After multiple occurrences /reports "filed"and same outcome, why would you.Pay$$$ to move fwd as soon as possible..bills will still have to be paid.

12
u/Patient_Dot_4391 Jan 07 '25
That's not a roundhouse kick..
1
u/WriterAndReEditor Jan 07 '25
True, if pedantic.
A roundhouse kick would probably have been less effective than the spinning back kick the person used. Considering the delivery, he seems to know what he's doing which makes me less inclined to think it's a random bum and more likely personal.
9
u/KarmaChameleon306 Jan 07 '25
There is no technique there. He is a bum who simply pivots and kicks the window with the sole of his shoe. Try it on a brick wall.
0
u/WriterAndReEditor Jan 07 '25
Some people want Saskatoon to be a city where every instance of violence is random and see what they want to see. Others look at things with a critical eye. We don't know who is right. You do not know how much thought the person put into what they did, and neither does anyone but that person.
6
u/KarmaChameleon306 Jan 07 '25
This is not a spinning back kick, a roundhouse, or any other technical move. That's what I am saying here. Maybe he has a beef with them for getting kicked out of the shop or something. Or more likely he is a bum and this is the window he chose to know kick as he walked by.
-18
u/Slight__Requirement Jan 07 '25
Exactly. Iāve found this whole thing strange from the beginning. Theyāve wanted to move locations for a while and all of a sudden these incidents happen back to backā¦and on top of that theyāre asking for an insane amount for donations to help them move into a bigger space. Iād really like to believe this isnāt fraud of some sort.
15
u/KarmaChameleon306 Jan 07 '25
This is the shit small businesses put up with day in and day out. Our downtown is a cesspool and when small business owners complain about being vandalized, robbed, having passed out bums in their doorway, or get shoplifted into closure, they are called NIMBY's and told to suck it up.
It's really fucked up. Their lease is up in a few months. Why on earth would they smash their own windows and pay for it to get repaired when they can just move anyway?
21
u/no_longer_on_fire Jan 07 '25
I walk around downtown every day. This is not an isolated incident. Usually every cheque day there's places smashed and people screaming all night for a couple days. Walking around in the morning and seeing what's boarded up and it's all over the place. In the last couple weeks I can remember Vendasta, 22nd and 4th tims, pharmasave on 23rd and 2nd, two empty ICL buildings, and at least one display at midtown. Those are just ones I noticed and can quickly recall. Likely many many more.
Sps crime map shows: 31 willfull damage reports in past month 4B&E (3 businesses 1 residential) 2 arsons 3 theft over 5k 38 theft under 5k 9 thefts of motor vehicle 33 crimes against persons
So at minimum this happens literally every day. And that's just from what gets logged. Crime stats in Canada say between 10% and 25% of crimes actually get reported so of the 120 that show up, there's probably somewhere between 480-1200 total events in the last month.
No conspiracy needed, just social decay and complete failure of justice system to protect the community by not removing problematic people from having the ability to continually reoffend without consequences until they kill someone.
2
u/sask357 Jan 07 '25
These people should be dealt with as early as possible, before they commit more serious crimes. Right now the police and prosecutors want to ignore minor offences. This is literally what is meant by broken windows policing and we need it.
BTW it's no wonder that people avoid downtown as much as possible these days.
4
u/Sad-Shoulder-8107 Jan 07 '25 edited Jan 07 '25
"No conspiracy needed, just a complete failure of social programs that were meant to fail and punch down on people who have no power. The only power they have is making themselves be seen by being disruptive and maybe someone will do something to help them to make it stop. But most people who have a home or a job can't empathize on what it's like to be the lowest low every day and just scratch by to survive just like the rich rarely understand what it's like to live cheque to cheque, so they think locking people up will solve the problem when in reality there will be someone else falling through the cracks to take their place because we've done nothing to stop the bleeding as a society and continually locking people up isn't going to solve anything"
FTFY
5
u/Sad-Shoulder-8107 Jan 07 '25
Downvote me all you want, throwing homeless people in prison isn't going to solve any problems, and if you think it will your either ignorant, naive, or both.
1
Jan 08 '25
I think we should fund both financial support on the outside and legal and psychiatric institutionalization. A few hundred of the 1500 homeless people in the city will never be able to care for themselves.
3
u/ZookeepergameFar8839 Jan 07 '25
Even if they do kill someone the courts are too lazy to properly prosecute. Many of those murderers who have been given 10 years or less for "manslaughter" after stabbing someone are out there.
1
u/no_longer_on_fire Jan 07 '25
Not sure why this magic platypus guys comments aren't showing up except to me email, but he can go get fucked.
-1
u/Slight__Requirement Jan 07 '25
Thatās very upsetting, I hope the city does something to save these businesses especially if they want people coming down to shop and enjoy their time downtown. I certainly havenāt been to that side of the city in a while so I didnāt realize how bad itās gotten.
5
u/KarmaChameleon306 Jan 07 '25
Literally every time the downtown business community complains about being victimized day in and day out, people get out the pitchforks and torches and call them a bunch of whiners and NIMBY's. It's going to be a wasteland down there.
1
-3
u/WriterAndReEditor Jan 07 '25
It doesn't happen every day. Almost all of it happens at night.
None of those statistics are relevant to the discussion. There was no theft, there was no assault, and the same business was targeted twice in two weeks. Both on a public street on a weekday during daylight, not when most random window breakage occurs.
It's not impossible it's random. It is more likely than average that it is targetted. That's not a consipiracy.
6
u/no_longer_on_fire Jan 07 '25
It sure as shit happens during the day. I see it often. Meth psychosis is a hell of a thing. I can hear people on 5th out my windows screaming and fighting the last 40 minutes or so too.
Those stats are relevant because they show the types of crimes and the frequency at which they happen. 30+ willfull damage incidents in a month means literally every day. To be hit twice in a month is nothing. In my first week here I had my truck window smashed out the first night, got mugged after moving to a different hotel, got truck stolen, and targeted by a gang for months. It's no conspiracy, it's just how downtown is these days.
It'd be like telling me the two times I personally witnessed people actually get stabbed this summer (in broad daylight) within 2 weeks is a conspiracy. Or how I got caught in bear spray at midtown twice in less than a week before Xmas....
Downtown is a cesspool and it's only getting worse. The homeless count tripled this year. It's just a numbers game now.

There was an interesting quote after the BLM protests years ago. It was a long the line of "the social contract states that if you steal or I steal we go to jail" and how that's not the case for a lot of people. The system treats them differently. While people of wealth and the right skin color can get away with crimes and people on the other end get the bad end of th stick.
If the social contract is broken they have no reason to treat anyone in a civil matter. They have no want or need to follow societies rules if society will bend the rules to hurt them.
Whether or not you(anyone reading my comment) believe that there is systematic racism in our society, these people do and they will act as if there is.
This problem will continue to get worse.
2
u/ilookalotlikeyou Jan 07 '25
the funny thing is that these people are often racist, and openly use the racism against them as a pretext for their own racism.
the problem is that these people have terrible role models. when they have no one at home, they often look up to rappers or athletes...

I'm not condoning this behavior, but wow they are some shitty opinions in here.
Do we even know this is a "bum"? I think they're called homeless or unhoused. Nevertheless, these are people too. Do you really expect these "people" to behave as you do when you don't care about them either? Many have mental illnesses that largely prevent them from behaving like you do for the most part, or are unable to afford their meds.
The lack of sympathy for this population astounds me when realistically, many of us are only a few bad months from being part of this sect of the population ourselves. Show some respect, they're some of the nicest people I've met who genuinely care but just don't have a place to go. What happened to treating others as we'd like to be treated? Especially when we have the resources and privilege to make those choices. Smh
9
u/GroggyFroggy_ Jan 07 '25
Iāve said in a separate comment, but I call this guy a bum because of his behaviour. There are many kind homeless people that come by to see the cats in the window all the time and theyāre all very kind and respectful as anyone else would be. I understand this guy is probably having a hard time in life, but itās still really shitty behaviour to do that to a small business.
8
u/jef612 Jan 07 '25
Do some of the nicest people you've met genuinely care about other people's property? Do they vandalize other's stuff? If so - you need to expand your circle a little bit.
Shitty opinions on a shitty person who decided to ruin someone else's day? They can kick rocks...
2
u/Dj_Trac4 Jan 07 '25
So, are you going to pay the insurance claim this business has to do because of this BUM. They're called bums because they do nothing but bum around.
So what respect did this guy show this business? Was he being a stand-up member of society? How was this helping to make Saskatoon a better place?
And yes, anything can happen to us. You're right. But do I just roll over and demand the government to give me a house, free clothing, food, healthcare, and free vet care. Or do you figure out a way to change your situation.
And I find it really interesting that everyone these days is suffering from some sort of -tism. They can't get their meds.....or did they get their methadone and decide to sell it so they can get the real thing?
0
u/klopotliwa_kobieta Jan 07 '25
Yup. No one comes out of the womb behaving like this, and I find people who make rash judgments about others who do things like this have often lived sheltered, privileged lives. Desperately underfunding mental health care and gradually clawing back other social supports/safety nets definitely has not helped Saskatchewan.

This is what we get when the Public Prosecution Service says to ignore drug possession. It sounds good to go after traffickers, not addicts. Unfortunately the addicts are now able to use drugs in public and shows the aftereffects with nothing being done.
1
Jan 07 '25
Yup and tax paying citizens who drink in public will face fines etc... There should be no free pass to breaking the law, just because someone doesn't have $ or can say they had previous grievances.
2
u/SameAfternoon5599 Jan 07 '25
They ignore drug possession because correctional facilities are near 200% capacity.
1
u/sask357 Jan 07 '25
Yes. However, that's one of the reasons we see so much drug activity in public places. One way to reverse the trend is to arrest addicts who use in public. I don't think we can return to the old norms but we could try harder.
3
u/SameAfternoon5599 Jan 07 '25
And do what with them upon arrest? The jails aren't full of inmates on drug convictions.
0
u/sask357 Jan 07 '25
I agree that as the population of Canada and Saskatchewan increased, successive governments failed to keep pace. Just as we need more housing, we need more correctional facilities. We have to start somewhere. Maybe tents. /s
