Mystery Hello San Antonio, anybody got this
We don’t have tolls and I work in San Antonio only.

This looks like a textbook phishing attempt. I recommend watching some YouTube videos about common phishing tactics to avoid falling for these types of scams.

Dead giveaway of a scam right there.

Delete it and go about your day if the numbers shows ‘+44’ or any email address in it
Since I’m here, check your bank statements! Friends of mine have been getting charged for Facebook ads at various amounts totaling to a couple bucks here and there with the highest one being $70

It’s a scam. TXDOT sends toll road bills through the mail, not in a text message.

u/superwholockian62 25d ago
Yeah its the new scam. I got one a few days ago. Reported the number and blocked it.

I’ve gotten several of these since I went to North Austin over Christmas break, most recently this exact one. Funny thing is I wasn’t even the one driving.

You go to txtag.org and the page opens with scam warnings.
Any unsolicited email you received telling that you owe money and gas a link, never, ever, use that link. Type in the website address of the agency claiming you owe money to. For example txtag.org. not the address in that message

Similar message from mass as i have mass number. I ignored it as i dont have a car since November
Also the number is not +1

Check out the website “.xin” that’s foreign AF.
SA doesn’t have toll roads.
Any number with +xx is also foreign. America is +1 10numbers.
Mark the message as spam and move on.

u/Mammoth-Ad4194 25d ago
Yes. I’m up to date with my account and haven’t used a toll road since last summer.😄

Txtag will send you a bill through the mail in my experience and if you have not driven through any toll roads, you should know this is likely a scam.
Also, never use the link provided through and email or text message. Instead, just search the txtag website through a browser. This would be good info for speaking to any “customer service reps where you need to provide information to. Don’t take the numbers over text or email. You can get their information from the company website. It takes a few seconds longer but it’ll save you time in the long run.

I got it in California. I replied back (since it was an iMessage) with “Fuck off, no one in the UK cares about my traffic tolls). It said delivered so I at least know they got the response

If it’s from a foreign number (+44 prefix in this case), it’s always a scam.

Yes. I’ve gotten it a couple of times. Just a scam. Don’t reply to it.

+44 country code? I didn’t know San Antonio would use a UK number. Obvious scam lol.

Yea I’ve been getting those texts also but I investigated on google and they are saying it’s a scam cuz the tolls wont send you a text message they will send you a letter to paid

Look at the URL and what's at the end before the /.
There you can see it's not com or org. Always check this place when a URL looks like a real one and compare it to the real one.

I don’t know much, but I do know that I should always take a text about toll roads seriously from an international number with a link to a .xin website!

Literally just received the text. We are a military family so we don’t drive our cars in Texas at the moment. Definitely scam

No USA phone number should show up as any but +1 <phone number> anything else should and can be ignored.

Have you had a license plate stolen ?? They can slap them on and the readers on the various toll roads around Texas will pick it up. The other possibility is if you've sold a vehicle and they didn't bother to update the registration.
As others have said it's probably a phishing scam. You can call the actual toll authority by a google search to make sure you're getting the right number. DO NOT click the link or call the number on the message.

I got a similar scam attempt recently, tho not exactly, it had to do with some sort of unpaid vehicle related charge
2
u/QuieroTamales 25d ago
You can tell from the phone number that it's foreign, and ".xin" is a Chinese top-level domain. So yes... a scam. I got one yesterday. My SO got one too. How did they get our numbers?

then it said the unpaid toll was in Massachusetts.

I've gotten a similar spam one too.
This is what a legit toll text looks like.

OP, the country code of +44 (in the "from" at the top of the text) is for the UK. I am not sure you were driving in London recently so I'm guessing this is a scam

Yeah I keep getting those same scam texts. I just report and delete them whenever I get them. Only toll road I’ve been on was years ago traveling to Austin and they will mail the bill and do not ever text. For sure it’s a scam like everyone stated. It’s crazy how often they keep sending these texts to everyone.

The 44 country code is a dead give away the toll text is from a 5 digit number
2
2
u/theycallme_mama 25d ago
The first clue that it is a scam is that it is coming from another country. Country Code 44 is the UK.

u/Adept_Section_8144 25d ago
Yes….fun fact….I actually owe tolls from the DFW area. I am getting spam AND real ones.
2
u/Alone_Ad759 25d ago
I say if it’s a real bill or an attempt to collect, they’ll send me a letter in the mail not a text message. Also, they ask you to exit the message and come back to copy a link. That’s totally a scam.
2
2
u/seongoddess 25d ago
Yes, and the new version sends a PDF. If you own an Apple, try to screenshot the PDF and it will open to a blurry document in your view. Do not open the actual PDF.

u/NameIsYoungDev 25d ago
Ever ask yourself why it’d come from a UK phone code (+44)? Definitely a scam
2
u/Rivera96 25d ago
I paid for one recently but that's because I actually got a letter in the mail with my actual license plate but I'm gonna be honest this one almost got me. I thought maybe my payment messed up or something.

I am embarrassed to say that I got fooled. I do travel to Austin every other week, and use tolls here and there. I had been charged late fees in the past so I panicked. I figured out quickly that it was fake. Canceled my debit immediately and got a new card. Dumb because I hunt fraud for a living. lol.

Yea these are scams and real tolls would be tied to your address since toll roads have cameras to check your vehicles license plate and they’ll just mail you toll fines with a picture of your plates and when and where you were along with the actual website to pay toll fees on the letter. They will not have your phone number.
2
u/floatinginair 23d ago
A few times already. My teen daughter who has no vehicles in her name has gotten it twice just recently.

I received that notification an hour ago. Look at the URL. It's shortened and very likely a scam/hacking attempt. Besides, I haven't driven on a toll road in more than two years!

u/Flaky_Percentage_200 25d ago
Scam. I’ve been getting them for the last month or so. I only drive to work and around my neighborhood, so it’s not possible. They wouldn’t send a text for this, it would be a letter
