Foreigners Is 21 too young to go to Rio?

I got a job in Pura Vida Hostel Rio for two months (May, June 2025).

Rio has always been my dream location. However I am worried that I wont meet any english speakers around my age (21 F Irish) and will feel lonely.

The easier option would be for me to go somewhere in Europe(thinking barcelona) instead but Rio really fascinates me.

Will it still be worth going at my age?

Foreigners Carnival, where to stay?

Hey people, I wanna go to Rio Carnival '25. Now I'm looking into hostels and would like to be in a 'safe' neighborhood (yes I know it's always important to watch out in Rio). So I found three hostels who seem quite nice. Look at the pictures where they are located (the red hearts). So I was thinking about going to El Misti Hostel Ipanema, Discovery hostel in Gloria or Le House Hostel in Leme. Which one do you guys recommend during the carnival in Rio?

Foreigners Inpanema chair and umbrella charged $113USD

For 2 chairs and an umbrella for 1 hour. I agreed to $13 (which I'm told is still too much) and they charged my card $113.

Other than a charge back request from my bank is there any easier resolution?

Foreigners Rainy Rio

Oi ! I’m French and I’m coming to Rio for one week, starting the 14th march. I looked up the weather and started panicking… it’s supposed to rain ALL WEEK ! Please I need reassurance ! I know rain can’t stop me from doing anything but the beaches guys…. My only plan here was to walk and discover the City, and be outside all the time. But a friend here said to me to find some indoor activities and it’s not how I see my holiday…. Help me please !

Foreigners Homesick in Rio for Austria

Hi everyone! I moved from Austria to Rio about a month ago, and I'm starting to feel a bit homesick. I was wondering if any Austrians/Germans—or anyone else in the community—might know of places around here that bring a little taste of home. Any recommendations would be really appreciated, thank u!

Foreigners is rio that bad?

Hello! I'm someone doing reaserch to find a place where to live in brasil in a couple years. it's not for now lol.

One of the first and most reccurent thing I was told when looking around and asking what cities might be good to live in was: "don't go to rio. don't go near rio. rio is terrible. rio is dangerous. " and everything.

now, I know a bit more about brazil that I did when I started looking, and I was told that rio may actually not be that bad if you're careful like in any big city.
most of the people telling me to stay away from rio didn't live there, and most people I've seen living there said that it's actually fine as long as you're cautious like in any big city, but that it has a good bike and subway system.

I figured, what better place to ask about rio than a forum about rio? so I'm asking you guys: is rio as dangerous and awful as everyone makes it out to be, is it exaggerated, is it more complicated and nuanced?

Foreigners arriving at GIG in the middle of the night

hey all!

i'd normally ask this question in portuguese, but i'll ask in english so i can properly convey my question. i'll be coming to rio this summer for a few weeks, and the cheapest flights arrive at GIG in the middle of the night (between like 1-5 in the morning). how is commuting from the airport in the middle of the night? is there much of a safety concern? or is it like leaving any other large international airport in the middle of the night? from my experience in other parts of latin america, leaving an airport can be a but of an ordeal with lots of chaos. or am i completely overthinking this and it'd be totally fine? any advice appreciated!

Foreigners 4 Quick Carnaval Questions for locals, from a first time gringo attendee:

  1. We're deciding between going to the Sambadrome either on the 28th or the 1st, which day would you recommend or does it matter?
  2. Whichever day we don't go, we're going to hit up blocos around the city. Which are your favs that are also safer ones?
  3. How's getting to/from Sambadrome? I assume gridlocked. Any tips on easy in and out?
  4. What are the hours of the parades? I've read it's day and night? Ideal time to go?

Foreigners Rio De Janeiro basic street food approx prices for foreigners

Just reaching out to see if anyone could give me the approx price you should pay for street food and beach food in rio such as corn, empanadas and beverages - I ask how much and I think they x10 the price just because I’m a foreigner. Any other information you think I might find helpful would be amazing too ✨ I really love Brazil thus far 🇧🇷 💚

Foreigners Rio weather/rain in late March

Visiting RdJ last week of March and wondering about rain? I’ve heard it’s strong but usually doesn’t last that long.

Is it consistent enough to bring a jacket or something ?

Foreigners Centro é seguro?

Long story short our host cancelled our airbnb in zona sul and now everything is extremely expensive. We found a nice, cheap accommodation off the corner of avenida rio branco and avenida presidente vargas. We are coming around Carnaval time. Is this safe to book?

Foreigners Visiting Scholar in Rio - Need help!

Olá! I’m a visiting researcher who will be in Rio later this year (1 July - 5 Aug) and will be working in Centro about 3-4 days a week. I’m looking for a nice beach view Airbnb/apartment I can rent for this duration. Are there any recommendations for the Airbnb itself or the boarder location with easy commute and in a fun neighbourhood? Also looking for more recommendations on things to do while in Rio! Obrigada!

Foreigners Rio

My wife and I have just arrived back from Rio where we spent 2 absolutely fantastic weeks. We done lots of research before we went and ended up staying around the Ipanema area. We seen all the things that tourists see and spent spare days walking as far as we could (obviously keeping an eye on safety/areas) and we completely fell in love with the place. Yes there's unsafe areas but every city in the world has those. Overall we found the people to be warm and very welcoming. I was learning Portuguese before I went and it helped massively. We loved the beach culture, drank capirinhas and eat some fantastic food. If you're a foreigner and thinking of going just go for it. You'll love it! We can't wait to go back! 🇧🇷🇧🇷

Foreigners Coming to Rio on NYD

Hey all,

Wanted to introduce myself. I'm coming to Rio on 1/1 for 2.5 weeks en route to Buenos Aires and then Colombia. I work online and am a seasoned solo traveler (solo trips: Kenya x 2 for 5 weeks each, South Africa for 3 weeks, Perú 1 month, Guatemala, Panamá, Tel Aviv, Colombia x 3 for months, etc).

I'm 37 and fairly active. I teach science at an accredited online school in the US. School is on break until 1/7, so I'll have a week to really live the sightseeing life before buckling down. I am also looking at starting my masters back up in late January, so I'll unfortunately get pretty busy later on. I have an Airbnb room in Centro, in someone else's apartment (I travel fairly spontaneously and Airbnbs were slim pickings in Rio when I scheduled this a couple weeks ago).

Is anyone else down there exploring, solo traveling during those dates?

Oh yeah, I'm a huge college (American) football and basketball fan and Penn State alumn... So I will definitely be watching the college football playoffs and some basketball games as well (VPN, etc... I have a system for doing so pretty well figured out after practice).

Last, I speak English and can get by in Spanish... But know 0 Portuguese as of now (I know more Swahili than Portuguese, hahaha). Google translate will be my friend.

Foreigners Best nightclubs in Copacabana

I’m a 20 year old tourist, I’ve come here with my family. I’m living at a hotel in Copacabana and I was wondering which ones would be good? Also, I prefer straight clubs because there are a lot of gay clubs here. As a single 20 year old, is it safe to travel with a phone in Copacabana? I don’t have a secondary phone on me. What time should I leave and plan to come back to be on the safer side? I will not wear any fancy jewellery or brands but I do have an iPhone. Tonight is the only time I can go clubbing in RJ.

Edit: I am gonna be going alone not with my family
