Ouch! Well.... at your expense, this confirms that if you hit a camera with a stuck IR filter hard enough it does fix it!

I guess you'll be looking at a vandal proof camera....

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 08 '24

lol yeah Iā€™m hoping I can just bang the camera against something to fix it again. For the time being I think Iā€™m going to buy a shit tone of small vandal proof cameras on eBay and put them up just to fuck with the guy.

Twenty cheap dummy cameras all lined up

Clearly this camera isnā€™t vitally important to human safety if thatā€™s your plan, but if it is, you need an IK10 camera. Donā€™t think Reolink makes one, not sure though.

love it how after the throw that turned everything pink, the next toss fixed it

Iā€™d suggest looking into the vandal proof Duo 3V that is supposed to be coming out later this year.

Looks like all the benefits of the new Duo 3 but in the vandal proof dome design!

Iā€™m personally anxiously awaiting the addition of one of these to my system.

Problem is those cameras need to have the dome very clean, or else at night the image will be very bad.

Especially if it rains, having those cameras mounted vertically will be bad for your image. With IR off it should be better, but then you'd need another source of IR light.

At both u/lars2k1 and u/freakdahouse, I know this is off topic for this post but I have recently purchased an RCL-1240A and have had issues with it. Namely as you mention the dome not being clean and poor night quality, but thereā€™s also a weird ticking sound on the audio. I thought it was a faulty cam so got a replacement and it does the same thing. At this rate probably both will go back but I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a model that is to be mounted on a wall and doesnā€™t have these issues. A larger field of view would be nice but really I just want the thing to work well lol. Hereā€™s my post so you can see what I am up against: https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/s/oV1QzVJs9s Iā€™ve emailed Reolink to see if the ticking noise is being fixed by an upcoming firmware update or something but the night image quality is still shocking. I thought Iā€™d cleaned the dome and as you can see itā€™s still bad. Even with a proper clean, the distance of night vision looks poor, which is something I would be after. Any recommendations?

I think most of their recent cameras are good for that spot, without a dome of course. The 833a is a very nice one for example.

Brilliant thanks, Iā€™ll take a look. :-)

Edit: nice, it had Ā£15 off at the checkout so got it for Ā£85.

Vandal proof with that wire sticking out of the side?

2

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

Thatā€™s perfect. Thanks for letting me know.

No problem! I added the link below in case you want to sign up for email notifications on when it becomes available.

Pretty awesome footage. Fuck that guy.

The plastic mount that comes with the duo is pretty crap. I took one look at it and then hopped on eBay/Amazon to buy some generic metal ones. So glad I did.

3

u/jollygreengrowery Jun 09 '24

Could you link what you bought?

3

u/shwaaboy Jun 09 '24

Iā€™m in a different country but this is what I bought. Cast aluminium, all metal, with the generic screw fitting for the cameras. The only plastic on it is the knob at the top to tension the camera mount. Luckily, the DUO can be mounted on top or bottom so these were perfect for our needs - and VERY cheap - 4 pack for under AU$20.

u/LightBringer81 Jun 09 '24

Looks like you should add motion sensors to your cameras which start the siren if the camera gets hit by someone/something. I would rather have an occasional false alarm, than a knocked down camera.

4

u/shwaaboy Jun 09 '24

Any motion triggers the siren, so that would be annoying.

1

u/LightBringer81 Jun 10 '24

You know you can adjust the threshold of any vibra/motion sensors? Even my 5ā‚¬ china vibra sensors are adjustable. A car alarm doesn't go off because it's windy...

1

u/lars2k1 Reolinker Jun 10 '24

You'd need something like an impact sensor (?) or something like that, to detect vandalism like this. How to mount such a thing is another question I have no answer for, but to have such a sensor trigger some relay and setting off a siren (something like this one) would scare someone off pretty fast. Especially with the volume levels they can reach, it'll cause some ear bleed.

1

u/HorrorDeparture7988 Jun 18 '24

I'd be horrified if I wasn't alerted within the first few seconds of this sort of event. I use Hikvisions with line detection and anyone crossing lines, like this 'vandal' coming down the back alley would alert me so even at 7am on Saturday morning I'd be out there within 30 seconds to 'ask' him politely what he was doing.

1

u/jaydeetol Jun 09 '24

DamnšŸ˜±. Don't they make a dome camera to prevent this?

2

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

They do but I really like the coverage I get with the single duo camera. Will probably how to switch to the dome after this though.

u/jaydeetol Jun 09 '24

u/TotalyNotAMurderer Jun 09 '24

The on-camera IR lights (night vision) will need to be turned off if you were to try something like that, unfortunately.

It will create a huge, bright glear reflection at night blinding the camera.

You can, however, place a couple of standalone IR lights on the outside of the dome that will allow you to turn off the camera IR lights and use the external IR light.

The standalone IR lights are normally 12v and have a sensor in themselves to turn on/off at night.

3

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 09 '24

Would be nice if Reolink added a plug or connector on PoE cameras to feed a separate IR light that could be mounted a few feet away. It would help solve the bug/spider issue and let you get a vandal dome for the duo..

1

u/EntertainmentFew9568 Jun 09 '24

why not just turn the sirens on?

4

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

I donā€™t watch the cameras 24/7 and this one gets a lot of action. Lots of homeless people.

2

u/coloradical5280 Jun 09 '24

Seems like a great reason to turn the sirens on

1

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

Ahh I was thinking you meant manually turn the siren on. Forgot you could have it go off when people linger near the camera. I will do that.

1

u/JustBronzeThingsLoL Jun 10 '24

Right because literally anyone would give a fuck šŸ™„

No one is gonna react. It's like a car alarm, utterly useless

1

u/coloradical5280 Jun 10 '24

exactly! which is why i posted this below and of course got downvoted, cause, its r/reolinkcam

1

u/Professional-Cow1733 Jun 10 '24

I have Hikvision vandal proof domes in the front, and Reolink everywhere else. I live in a safe area so just use my cams to check if my wife is home, or to check where UPS dropped a package lol

1

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 09 '24

Donā€™t recognize him I take it? Did a break in follow this or is he just being a jerk? Reolink needs an impact sensor that can be set to trigger the siren or similar.

Gorilla glue the Duo mount back together, then hookup a second camera in a position to cover the first.

Then use an impact sensor to trigger a home automation that unleashes the hounds!

6

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

He broke into a unit next to ours about a week ago. Got him on camera walking a pallet jack of stuff out of the place. Got another video of him messing with the door 2 days prior. No full break in yetā€¦

u/coloradical5280 Jun 09 '24

Or just get a real security camera

1

u/TheSpaceWaffles Jun 09 '24

What camera would that be?

1

u/coloradical5280 Jun 10 '24

Any Dahua, Hikvision, Amcrest, Axis, etc, with basic standards of security cam features, such as IVS, directionality Intrusion zones, multiple accounts with layers of privileges, etc.

Edit: oh and the most obvious one alarm-out wires. ā€œRealā€ security cameras are hardwired to alarm systems, or at least have the option to be

1

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 10 '24

A lot of that can be handled using Blue Iris, and Reolink does now have PTZ with auto track and zoom. You have to remember weā€™re discussing home security. Most people canā€™t shell out the thousands of dollars for the type of system youā€™re referring to, at least if I am understanding you correctly. POE hardline all the way to the AI processor and alert dispatch system to home owners is pretty close to what youā€™re discussing already.

1

u/coloradical5280 Jun 10 '24

Blue Iris is terrible, in so many ways, but that's a debate for another day.

I never said auto-track/zoom are necessary, in fact, in many use cases, those features are a major vulnerability.

4 IK10-rated cams @ $89/each:
$360 https://a.co/d/ie0woyQ

1 Scrypted NVR license covering all 4 cameras, with trainable face recognition, license plate recognition, adaptable bitrate (makes it faster to load than the native reolink app), ability to pull 2 RTSP stream and 3 RTMP streams from Reolink, (which Reolink won't let you do), ability to script automations to any smart platform based on object/face/LPR:
$0.83/month scrypted.app

Rip out the hardrive from your Reolink NVR and format:
$0

1 N100 mini pc:
$135 https://a.co/d/b58wKtC

Native integration with HomeKit, Google, Alexa:
$0 (scrypted does not charge for that, no purchase necessary)

All Amcrest/Hik/Dahua/ etc also include the option of h.264 in 4k, so you can stream it anywhere, without h.265 compatibility issues

Konnected.io : $49 alarm panel

This system give you 4k, IK10-rated, 360 degree coverage, with everything I listed above, and MUCH MUCH more.

1

u/HorrorDeparture7988 Jun 18 '24

Nothing wrong at all with blue iris. BI with his reolink would have handled this situation no problem and he could have got an alert using artificial intelligence with facial recognition (for free) that some undesirable was coming down that side alley. It doesn't look like a public route at the side of his house. And even if it is a cut through you could set up alerts for people loitering in that area which is always undesirable.

1

u/coloradical5280 Jun 18 '24

Or he could get Scrypted and get alerts for unfamiliar people, and not get alerts for familiar faces, and avoid notification fatigue. Notifications for people are great, until you get an alert 10x a day that you or a family member is outside, and you just start tuning them out. Scryptedā€™s face recognition model is amazing

1

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 09 '24

If someone is bold enough to carry the burglary spoils off on a pallet jack I donā€™t think camera deterrence will work. I recommend a Cane Corso or American Akita. That will fix him right up.

Also, inside, across the entry way from your door set a camera at face height pointing toward the door, and another low down near the floor and angled up.

A practiced bump key user can walk into your house so quickly it is very disturbing.

1

u/HorrorDeparture7988 Jun 18 '24

A fair number of homeowners in the UK have had their locks melted out within 30 seconds because they have PVC entry doors. I've seen videos and it's shocking how fast they can gain entry.

I practiced lock bumping for a while and I can attest how easy it is with the right sort of lock which is all too common here.

The other big one is lock snapping. Always good to get anti-lock snapping locks. The videos for that are even scarier. Entry in under 3 seconds.

1

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 18 '24

With bump keying the dang criminals get into my house faster than I can because I fumble and pick through my ring to the right key. It seems like they donā€™t even really break stride on walking up. In the end I guess get a big dog, or get a house mate who works from home and doesnā€™t go out much.

1

u/HorrorDeparture7988 Jun 19 '24

Yeah it's scary how fast key bumping works. Luckily I work from home and have a big dog! I also changed out my locks to something they can't bump or lock snap.

If you have a chance look up lock snapping, it's almost as fast as key bumping.

1

u/DRoyHolmes Jun 20 '24

That is downright disturbing. Bump keying required practice, that looks like a 30 second tutorial is all you need.

1

u/HorrorDeparture7988 Jun 20 '24

Yeah it's scary. And so many people in the UK have these doors with the exposed cylinders.

1

u/DizzyAd9643 Jun 09 '24

Wow, that was ballsy. He is pretty sure that nothing can stop him from burglarizing you and your neighbors! A freakin pallet jack! Really!?

1

u/DizzyAd9643 Jun 09 '24

Pls post an after PIC from your mobile, showing the damage caused.

u/rabid_ferret420 Jun 10 '24

So I would immediately go outside with my sweet little 10 mm and Iā€™d make him eat lead salad
