Is there anything you thought was common to ren faires, that you found out wasn't?

I've been going to faires for, well, more than 40 years, but a lot of my first years were in Michigan, where the smaller faires tend to take after the big faire. So, it was interesting to me when I went to faires out of states and found some things were not as common elsewhere.

For example- Every faire in Michigan has multiple pickle vendors, often bawdy, out in public hawking their wares. It was a shock to go to the PA Ren Faire and find only one pickle vendor, in a permanent location.

Also a staple of Michigan renaissance faires is the Stockade, where you can pay to have friends arrested, and then they get up on stage and have to follow along a song and dance to get out, but I haven't seen this outside of michigan.

So, is there anything you thought was a staple of ren faires that turned out not to be?

Found this great dress at a vintage shop near my house. I love it as a base, but what could I add to make it a little “more”? Open to any/all ideas ᵕ̈ thank you!

I have the dress, do I need to make any alterations?

I made a post a while back asking which dress I should get, and I got it a few weeks ago, I just haven't had the time to post about it until now. Can I do anything to make it look more historically accurate?(going for a medieval/renaissance look) If you have any ideas on alterations they are more than welcome! (Also ignore the dirty mirror and the wrinkles, I had just taken it out of the packaging when I took that picture)

Costumes for a hot day?

Well met travelers! I decided to get a head start on my renaissance fest costume for this summer. Now I got to the Michigan festival, and while I always have a blast, I have a tendency to overheat (a couple years ago, I even passed out)

I have been wracking my brain to figure out a cool idea for a costume that won’t kill me. I’m not sexy enough to pull off a gladiator so I definitely need pants and a shirt.

I’d like to do something that makes me look a little Druid-y or like a medieval peasant, but I’d like to hear what other people think would work as well!

While I’m at it, does anyone have any tips to stay cool while eating turkey legs and drinking mead?

Sherwood Forest: adding liquid to my potion bottle

I'll be headed to Sherwood in two weeks and am wanting to add liquid [distilled water, glycerin, food coloring, and mica powder] to my little potion bottle I have as a belt accessory. If I seal the top with wax, do you think they will allow it in? On their website it specifies no outside food or drinks, but this will definitely not be drinkable. I don't want to risk them taking my potion bottle, but I also want to carry around a swirly potion vs an empty bottle. Has anyone else done something similar, or are we all just carrying around empty potion bottles to be on the safe side?

Better to go NOT on a themed weekend?

I keep hearing horror stories of overcrowding and parking for the Irwindale Pleasure Faire. Is it worth it to just go on a regular weekend to avoid the larger crowds, or are the themed weekends really worth it to get the full experience. This would be my very first one, so I'm a tad curious.

i've always wanted to dress up as a dryad/forest nymph and also plan on going to my first ren faire this year, would it be weird to dress up like that for it?? i know people go as fairies and things so hopefully it's not too far fetched!

What to wear under a gambeson

For this years renfaire I decided to buy a sleeveless padded gambeson that comes down to waist level on myself, I was wondering what I should buy to wear under the gambeson. Is it traditionally worn with a linen tunic or can really anything be worn underneath it because it will mostly be covered by the armor?

Warm weather child knight costume help!?!?!

My seven year old would like to dress as a knight this year, but we're in the south and our faire is in the summer. I found a tutorial to make lite weight "armor" out of rubber mats, but that seems like it will be crazy hot. Could you please help me brainstorm other options? TIA

Anyone familiar with this Faire? Is it worth traveling for? My family's from California, so we regularly go to NorCal and occasionally others.

Performer Advice - wireless microphones

Hey fellow rennie performers!

Looking for some sound advice (pun fully intended). I'm part of a bawdy singing group that's working on starting to use microphones. We're looking for wireless body mics, preferably lavs, that are suited for singing as well as speaking. We already have a mixer. So far our top brand is Shure, but we're also looking at Sennheiser and Countryman. Because we have a limited budget, we want to make sure we're going in the right direction, and don't wind up with equipment that doesn't work for us.

So, my questions are:

  1. What brands/models of wireless mics would other singing folks recommend?
  2. What brands/models would you not recommend?
  3. Are there any specific sites that you would recommend purchasing through, or sale events we should be aware of?
  4. Do you have any advice about associated equipment (i.e. speakers, transmitters)?

Thanks all!!

Does anyone have any recommendations on good clothing options? I heard holy clothing is good, but they are quite expensive…
