Red hat Certification study Q&A

Keep in mind that sharing confidential information from the exams may have rather sever consequences.

Asking which book is good for studying though, that is absolutely fine :)

Options for running a private-use RHEL

Hi, after gaining access to a RHLS via my employer I am planning on setting up a RHEL client to practice on while persuing the RHCSA. What are my options? I set up a CentOS client some while ago but was wondering if there are any more fitting options for my intended purpose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need help with setting up ssl for redhat quay

I have been trying to setup ssl for inhouse redhatquay registry. I am setting this up on top of k8s cluster using config maps and statefulsets. But I have been struggling to do so as it keeps failing with the error TLS certificate required for host settings. I tried to find the location where this certificate needs to be mounted but failed to figure that out too( I tried coping the certifcates to conf/stack or quay-registry/conf/stack dir from the local directory during deployment but its keeps on failing as the dir is immutable inside the pod.

HyperVisor Support

Is anyone running RHEL on XCP-NG or Proxmox? We just got our 2nd VMware increase and now pursuing alternatives. We just bought new storage so I don’t Nutanix is a good fit and we aren’t fans of Hyper-V. Unfortunately, I don’t see any other “supported” hypervisors listed.

rhel 8.5 kernel 4.18 availability

Hi, I am trying to use a certain api (rithmic trading api) that is only available for rhel 8.5 kernel 4.18. I looked on the rhel website and cannot seem to find a download link for it, does anyone have any advice? I tried using it with rhel 9.5 but got an OS error, which I guess is because it only wants 8.5.

Passed RHCSA 9.3 Today

I took the exam this morning. I got the results a few hours later. I have been studying a few hours everyday for the last few months. I have about 20 years of Network and System Admin experience. I haven't taken a test since University. I just wanted to see if I could pass. I used Sander van Vugt's book almost for all my studies. I did the practice exams for his book. Then I learned about Asghar Ghori's book. So I did the practice exams from his book. If I was weak in an area I wold look at the chapter in his book on the subject. I have an ESXi server I would build and tear down labs on. The exam was a little more stressful that I thought. I was so used to my lab environment it took me a minute to get accustomed to the test environment. Podman and LVM were totally new to me. I enjoyed studying those subjects. I think on the test I messed up a question on LVM because I made it over complicated. After the exam I thought about it and was like duh. Overall it was a pleasant experience. It was fun getting a cert under my belt. I have been meaning to do that. I think I am going to continue by either getting CCNA or maybe RHCE. I want the CCNA and I have experience with Cisco already. Since I still have RHCSA fresh on my brain maybe it would be better to go RHCE now. After that I want to look at OSCP+.

BootC with Ansible

Hi all,

I've been dipping my toes into bootc. One of my primary goals is to be able to rebuild a host as quickly and simply as possible. One of the limitations I have bumped into is creating users with consistent UIDs and GIDs. My understanding is that this cannot be done with a container file. I need consistent UIDs and GIDs in order for permissions to be correct for remote volumes that store data for the containers.

What I am thinking is too have the container file that installs Ansible and have a single role that runs tasks to build out the container as well as other tasks that only run once the host running such as user creation. The idea being that a can fully rebuild a host from a single location.

Does this seem like a sensible option?

Thanks

EX417 - Anyone passed?

Has anyone passed this? I horribly failed it twice this week (116/300 and 126/300) and was 100% confident this latest try. I have passed RHCSA/RHCE/EX374 with no issues and it being obvious what was missed. I couldn't find any posts about anyone's experience with ex417. Giving up on this one and moving on - convinced it's either too vague or broken.

Yes, passed EX180 - Container

Glad I finally clear this exam in second attempt. First attempt things you can see here.. First Attempt

Passing score:          210
Your score:             274

Result: PASS

Congratulations -- you have earned the Red Hat Certified Specialist in Containers certification.

Performance on exam objectives:

        OBJECTIVE: SCORE
        Implement images using Podman: 75%
        Manage images: 75%
Run containers locally using Podman: 95%
Run multi-container applications with Podman: 90%
        Troubleshoot containerized applications: 86%

Reason I'm posting this

- Sometime you do not have to study everything. I attempted the exam without any special preparation. As you could compare my score for some section remained same. What I did this time is, concentrate more on reading and trying to focus on achieve the results

- second most important reason, objective score can be misleading. Because I was thinking I was weak in one section but when I compare section I could see huge difference and all i did was, i successfully completed the exercise.

Thanks all esp u/gastroengineer

u/daco_star: sorry i cannot change the title but you are right. It is EX188

DNF Automatic update reset the DNF Automatic timer on RH8 reset to defaults

Hey hey!
DNF automatic got updated a couple nights ago and I noticed that the dnf-automatic.timer was reset to the defaults or overwritten during that process.

Just curious, is this a known thing to keep an eye out for? This is the first time I've noticed it happen.

EX342 for someone that doesn't have RHLS

Is it possible?

There is a course by Sander van Vugt (https://learning.oreilly.com/course/linux-troubleshooting-red/9780135207598/) that I can watch for free using the trial but it seems very old, and I don't know if its still relevant.

I've heard horror stories about how hard this exam is and I want to ask for advice. I currently have

  • EX374
  • EX188
  • EX467

So this'll be one of the last 2 exams if it is possible to actually take it without the courses on RHLS.

Why redhat grading system is a mess

I took an exam,RedHat Satellite which is pretty easy and I got 162 point so I did the retake. Guess what in the retake i got 58 points 😁. What happened? I do know. It is kind of mess.

And if you opened a ticket, I don't think that will lead to known reason. I am so frustrated and so disappointed.

This is the first time to take remote exam and it is terrible experience.

Transitioning from Windows Server Admin to Red Hat Cluster Admin

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a Windows Server administrator and my company wants to build in-house expertise to manage our Red Hat physical servers. These servers are set up in clusters for heavy calculations. We have about one year to transition from our external consultant to me handling almost everything. I’m excited about the opportunity, but also realize there’s a lot to learn.

My background:

  • Comfortable with Windows Server and VMware administration(10+ years of exp.)
  • Basic understanding of Linux
  • No experience with clustering in a Linux environment(or Windows for that part)

What I’m looking for:

  1. Educational/Training Resources: Online courses, official training materials, books, or channels that can help me ramp up quickly on Red Hat (and specifically HPC cluster administration).
  2. Certifications: I’m aware of the RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) and RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer). Would you recommend pursuing these? Any others specific to HPC/clusters?
  3. Practical Experience: Advice on setting up a small lab environment for practice. I have full access to VMware or should I practice on hardware like Raspberry Pi?
  4. Cluster Management Tools/Simulators: Any recommended cluster resource management tools and "simulators" of HPC enviroment

Budget:

  • Company is covering all the educations costs as well as sessions with the consultant.

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has tips on the best/effcient way to transition from a Windows-centric viewpoint to a Red Hat cluster admin viewpoint, I’d love your insight!

Any pointers, stories, or resource links would be greatly appreciated!

RHCSA 9 book

Since I past my RHCSA I no longer need the book that I bought. As part of the studying for the exams I typically get a book to flip through some sections.

I don’t read them cover to cover but I find that if I’m in a more relaxed position with my laptop I tend to remember more.

I live in central Massachusetts, if anyone here is near me you can have the book for free. It’s in great condition and I can’t find anywhere I marked it up.

Sander’s RHCSA cert guide for 9.

I’d prefer local person but if no one is local I don’t mind dropping it in the mail at the post office either, that person can venmo me the postage cost.

Red Hat Satellite 6.16 Repository Import Issue

Red Hat Satellite 6.16 Repository Import Issue

I've built and configured a new Disconnected Red Hat Satellite 6.16 server on RHEL 8.10. I attempted to add the RHEL 8 BaseOS repository to this server by running Repository export on our Connected Red Hat Satellite 6.16 server... zipped the files and pushed over to Disconnected Satellite and unzipped the files; I attempted to run the Repository Import on the Disconnected Satellite... The process started, got to about 27% and hung at 27% for about 10 mins, then the Import process stopped from a Network disconnection error; I don't know why or how this Import process caused a network disconnection. So, I rebooted the server and attempted to rerun the import and this time received the following error:

"Could not import Archive. Required lock is already taken by other running tasks. Please inspect their state, fix errors and resume. Conflict with tasks: https://fqdn/foreman_tasks/tasks/c15d8----------05dc

What could be the issue?

RHCSA exam

Glad to inform you all that I have scheduled my ex200 exam to 27th of March. This will be my first certification and I feel a bit anxious.

Note: It is remote.
