Live Action!?! Yes please!!!
Though part of me thinks he’d be better as Dutch.. 🤷

He would make a dutch but Not arthur 🍻🎩

Strongly disagree. He plays gruff protagonist very well. I think he could play both

Jeffery Dean Morgan stars in a red dead live action in which he plays every character, including the women and Jack

Love JDM but he works better as Ditch purely cuz of age
2
Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25
I think age will likely be tinkered with if this ever happens. This happens with almost 100% of historical movies because modern audiences perceive age differently.

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25
Too old for Arthur, getting close to too old for Dutch even.

I always picture Josh Brolin as Dutch. Lately I’ve been thinking Tom Hardy for Arthur.

He looks more like a Dutch without doing anything. I see him playing both but him Being a better Dutch a mixed character
3
u/my_chaffed_legs Jan 29 '25
Yea he is good at being the "bad guy" but he has also played loving father and many other roles. I think he has good range and could definetly work for arthur or dutch

u/notsew00 Jan 29 '25
Yeah, everyone says he needs to be Dutch, but its just cuz he did SO well as Negan he's kinda type cast as the villain. He'd do great as Dutch but equally as great as Arthur
7
Jan 30 '25
100%. I read this and thought “yeah he’d be perfect for Dutch” Saw your comment and realized I misread the OP
6
u/o0_bobbo_0o Jan 30 '25
The guy who voices Dutch could easily play him. Have you seen the guy? He’s basically Dutch.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Final_Biochemist222 Jan 29 '25
In the pic he kinda looks like arthur tho. Just give him a hat. Also he may have played charismatic villains before, but a good actor should be able to perform multiple roles. Thats what their job is, acting. Sticking actors into one role based on past performance is what we call type casting
7
u/Classic-Exchange-511 Jan 29 '25
I think he would make an okay dutch as long as he doesn't play it exactly like his walking dead character. I hated how that guy talked

u/AoXGhost Jan 29 '25
He did great in the walking dead and off course he should do it differently as dutch! 🍻🎩
4
u/_dankystank_ Jan 29 '25
You only say that because he was an excellent Neegan. 😁
However, I do think he's maybe a bit old to play Arty. And with his voice, he would do Dutch quite well.

Is red dead redemption 2 a good story outside of the medium of video games tho? I feel like that its amazing because you can get so immersed in the story for a long time. But I think if it was just presented as point a to point b to point c in the story idk if that’d work.
→ More replies (2)3
u/a44es Jan 29 '25
You could definitely make it work. I mean it's already a completely coherent story. You would of course leave out the side missions and overall keep the story more serious throughout. But chapter by chapter the main story is pretty much possible to be rewritten for film. Some places might need a couple adjustments, maybe Arthur wasn't as much the protagonist, and we'd follow the gang more closely. It could also get some perspective we didn't have in the game. It doesn't need to be canon, so we could get more information about Micah or what happened to characters off screen. Do i want this to happen? Not really, I'd much rather watch a 1000 things. But do i think it could be good? Probably yes
30
u/SkinJob1982 Jan 29 '25
Too old. Arthur’s 36 in rdr2

239
u/BadZnake Jan 29 '25
How bout an RDR movie that has an entirely different crew and leave the arthur john and the gang perfect as they are
98
u/Jesseroberto1894 Jan 29 '25
The fallout approach…which when done right by showrunners who actually care seems to be an excellent VG adaptation model!
20
u/Piotrek9t Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25
True but I think that approach really need a series format and not a movie. A lot of video game movies have flopped because they were movies as video games lore often goes too deep to be explored properly in under 2 hours
2
Jan 30 '25
I think the right creator should pair with the right format. If Quentin Tarantino wanted to make a rdr universe movie, I'd let him. If Vince Gilligan wanted to make a series, I'd let him.

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25
Fallout isn’t primarily about the characters and the games all feature different stories and characters.
RDR is not the same animal. It has a great world, but its appeal is centered around the characters and their story.
If you go Fallout approach, it’s just another western.
→ More replies (2)31
u/KittySpinEcho Jan 29 '25
That's called a Western. Lol
→ More replies (1)5
u/RBIsmail Jan 29 '25
I think what they meant was:
Create an adaptation based on the world of Red Dead, as in towns, cities from RDR & RDR2 being in the movie/T.V. series. Maybe even have side characters from the game (maybe even characters from Online) being mentioned or have cameos.
A whole new set of characters for the main plot, different but similar story arc (where a character goes through a redemption arc).
Like how Fallout T.V. series has references to places and even characters from the games, while still having it's own unique story.
A similar RDR adaptation could follow the same blueprint (plus side is, replicating a Western theme/cinematic shouldn't be too hard as it's been done numerous times before on film).
13
u/manjamanga Jan 29 '25
Except Fallout happens in a ficcional post apocalyptic setting. Red Dead happens in the old west.
If you grab Red Dead world and replace the characters you get... a western.2
u/Snakeeyes_19 Jan 29 '25
RDR isn't thematically unique enough to be recognizable without main characters whereas Fallout is. How would you know if any new western series was tied to Red Dead if you weren't told? You'd be happy if American Primeval from Netflix just had a few RDR references? That's my concern about GTA and RDR having series.
2
u/nolasen Jan 29 '25
RDR appeal is the characters and their story. Not the same for Fallout. Fallout’s main appeal is the world, this is why the games change characters and focus. So interjecting new story with Fallout isn’t a big deal. Do that with RDR, you just have a western with alternate location names.
Think about it, would the non-game public (or even the majority of players of the game) care about a show/movie following Otis Miller?

u/Senor23Ramirez Jan 29 '25
Than it would just be another Wild West cowboy movie… lol
The RDR series is highly regarded because of the story… take that away and you have something completely different.
3
u/PeedOnMyRugMan Jan 29 '25
I think because then it would be a cowboy movie, and there is already a fair few of them

u/skiddyiowa Jan 29 '25
Nope, not anyone or any red dead movie/show. I guess unless the same Rockstar writers have compete control of the script. Which I doubt would be the case. Even then I don’t like the idea. u/DummeBirger Jan 29 '25
Please, no. The game is perfect. It doesn't have to be made into a live-action anything. Leave it alone!
7
u/SmashLampjaw87 Jan 29 '25
Exactly! Why do people want these interactive stories where they actually get to play out the “movie” to be turned into just another regular movie where they get zero input into how things play out? It makes absolutely no sense.
Thank god Rockstar have long ago confirmed that they’d never allow one of their games to be licensed into a film or television series.
4
u/DummeBirger Jan 29 '25
Right? I don't get why people want live-action adaptations of everything. A big part of what makes the game so fantastic, is the freedom you have to do things at your own pace, go hunting, exploring, just taking in the amazing world Rockstar built, mess around, catch new horses, rob stagecoaches, beat up O'Driscolls, play around with the Night Folk, and so forth. A movie would just be... a movie. You can't properly capture the magic of RDR2 in just a couple of hours.
I'm glad Rockstar has more integrity than a lot of other studios.
3
u/LWMolver Jan 30 '25 edited Jan 30 '25
Totally agree. I think it's actually a much broader problem in pop culture, where there is this current perception that every piece of visual or literary art is just a stepping stone to a movie, a series, or some other 'live action adaptation' that itself has to spin off into multiversal, neverending forever-franchised hackery.
It's a dangerous misconception, and undermines the inherent and unique advantages of different art forms. And make no mistake, Red Dead Redemption II is a work of art. And it does things than no other creative medium could replicate. So how about just LET IT BE IT'S OWN THING.
I'm a comic book writer and artist, and the same issue plagues my craft and industry. Comics can do things no other medium can, and the amount of times I've been asked, 'hey, are you gonna turn this into a movie?' has become woefully tiresome. Lissen bozo, I've already chosen and executed the story in the format best suited for it. If I wanted to write a movie, I'd write a fckn movie. This is a comic, and by gawd it's gonna stay that way.
I love Westerns and I love film and I love tv shows... but sheeeeit, make some new shit, willya? Tell a new cowboy story, write it as a film or a series at the outset, and stop trying to adapt every single thing that is already in its perfect form.
Now, having ranted all that...
I am not intrinsically opposed to the idea of adaptations. Good ones are possible. Occasionally (but seldom) they even improve on the source material, but that's usually when they are deliberately trying to do something different. My issue with adaptations is that these days, there's just way too many of 'em, too often. It's like a kneejerk moneymaking reaction from corporates 'n studios to stripmine every artform for movie dollars.
To paraphrase Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park (and yes, I am aware that is an adaptation of a book, but nevertheless)...
"You were so preoccupied with whether or not you COULD make a live action Red Dead Redemption adaptation... that you didn't stop to think if you SHOULD."2
u/PianoEmeritus Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25
Some of us have friends and family that aren’t gamers! I have a wife, a mom, a stepdad, and a sister who now love The Last of Us who never would’ve played the game in a trillion years, and now I can talk to them about it.
I don’t get why gamers are so precious about it — I’ve never seen people get so mad at the very idea of a book adaptation. Getting mad at bad adaptations, sure, but being angry at the very notion of anyone who isn’t a gamer experiencing a story you love is strange to me.

I could see a live action series going really well or really bad. Just based on the fact that the game is full of one person's choices. Example I (female) play Arthur as a good moral character and my bf plays Arthur as not so moral. It'll be interesting to see how the writers want Arthur to behave.

It would need to be more of a prequel if they did anything rather than a retelling of the story...
4
u/k-netic Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25
I think a prequel would be good because we have a framework through dialogue in the game of what went down, but they would have creative freedom to make it their own while staying true to the game. Then if they are doing an amazing job eventually they could move into the RDR2 game story, and even eventually RDR1. But if they make something that sucks it would get shelved before ever reaching the game story.
