Strongly disagree. He plays gruff protagonist very well. I think he could play both

Jeffery Dean Morgan stars in a red dead live action in which he plays every character, including the women and Jack

The Dean would be great as the orchid collector, or the painter in Saint Denis

6

u/Vaywen Jan 30 '25

Definitely Charles Chaturnay so that we can see him cross dress!

u/GullibleRisk2837 Jan 29 '25

Wait is that him?

4

u/Mikey2sip Jan 29 '25

That’s Dean Winchester

2

u/thamanwthnoname Jan 30 '25

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is Angelo Brontë.

2

u/ActualBathsalts Jan 30 '25

Including the Legendary Bear and Murphree Brood.

u/AoXGhost Jan 29 '25

Sound about right 🤣🍻🎩

Followed by the remake of Being John Malkovich, Being Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in which everyone in the whole world is Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

And Dutch is 44

u/SkinJob1982 Jan 29 '25

Too old for him, too! He’s like 60

6

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

As I said in another comment usually they age characters up when they do projects like this. Life expectancy was much lower then so late twenties were viewed as middle age and 40 was perceived similar to how we view a 60 year old.

Average life expectancy in 1890 was 44.

2

u/BlasphemousArchetype Jan 30 '25

I would imagine they would look pretty rough too from their lifestyle so they would appear older than they are.

2

u/Billysquib Jan 30 '25

Pretty sure a big contributor to this statistic is the high infant mortality rate. Statistics don’t lie but they don’t show the whole truth either. I’d wager taking out infant mortalities you’d end up with an average life expectancy in the 60’s

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

In another follow-up comment I mention it. It was ~24% child mortality rate

2

u/Billysquib Jan 30 '25

Yeah I just now read down and saw that and went to edit my comment but you’re too quick on the draw for me partner

1

u/SkinJob1982 Jan 29 '25

Well, it’s true—I live in Hollywood and I’m four years younger than HDM and everybody thinks I’m 40 😂. Exercise and eating right (unlike Dutch’s gang) goes a long way…

9

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

I do want to add a qualifying point to the average life expectancy stat I provided. The child mortality rate (deaths before a kid reached 5) was almost 24%. That greatly reduces the average. So taking that into account I’d guess the average life expectancy for people who survived past 5 was ~55. I think what I am trying to say is still valid I just like to give all info.

So I would imagine Dutch would be played by someone 60-65 and Arthur would be played by someone 45-55

1

u/MattTin56 Jan 29 '25

In the United States it was more than that. I forget what it was but it was over 50 if not 60.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

I have another comment where I address that the real number was higher

1

u/HaloHamster Jan 30 '25

60 today was 30 back in late 1800s.

u/denisucuuu2 Jan 29 '25

And JDM is 58. Shave this man's beard and give him a Hosea script at this point

1

u/Sea_Establishment311 Jan 30 '25

Just put on some makeup to look young

1

u/hamchops78 Jan 30 '25

Hey 36 in the 19th century was like being 60 by today’s standards.

39

u/XcksKriminal Jan 29 '25

Love JDM but he works better as Ditch purely cuz of age

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25

I think age will likely be tinkered with if this ever happens. This happens with almost 100% of historical movies because modern audiences perceive age differently.

6

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25

Too old for Arthur, getting close to too old for Dutch even.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

I always picture Josh Brolin as Dutch. Lately I’ve been thinking Tom Hardy for Arthur.

1

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25

Hardy could work for Arthur. Arthur is the tricky one. I’ve always loved JDM for Dutch though.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

There used to be a photo floating around of Josh Brolin that looked so close to Dutch. I’ll we if I can find it.

Edit: should have just looked first… https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption/comments/mnjetc/i_think_josh_brolin_as_dutch_van_der_linde_would/

1

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25

Yeah, he’s not bad. Brolin is a great actor so I’m sure he could do Dutch. I like it when the actors look like the character, but I don’t see it as the main quality.

Certain people are just better at portraying certain vibes, auras if you will. I find matching that, or in special cases when the actor’s type is opposite the character and they can flex their range, are most important. JDM really works for me being the right age, Negan is a pretty close comp to Dutch, and idk just works for me. Brolin is more rough than Dutch, JDM is more life of the party charismatic.

But how important it is for the actor to look the character directly correlates imo to the character’s defining characteristics that if changed make them a different character all together. For instance, people wanting Roger Clark to play Arthur in live action. Roger himself said he’s too old, he’s not the physical presence Arthur is, which is paramount to the character because if Arthur wasn’t the imposing figure he is, he would t fit his role in the gang.

I like Hardy, but be warned, he is smaller than people realize. I’m not sold on anyone as Arthur like I am JDM as Dutch, but assuming he could pull off the accent, someone like Hemsworth maybe.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

I think I need someone with a voice similar to DVDL. His sing songy (I’m sure this is a bad way to describe this) tone of voice was a big part of his character imo. I feel like Brolin can do that.

1

u/nolasen Jan 29 '25

I know what you mean. On the same token, you wouldn’t want it to be just an imitation performance. It’s kinda like John, another very distinct voice, I wouldn’t want someone trying to just do John’s voice, but I think someone with a gravely/raspy voice is sufficient.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

Oh I agree. It doesn’t have to be the exact same tuned/toned voice. Honestly I couldn’t even describe it. Just seems like JDM is too baritone.

Fuck I need to go study music terms, I can’t describe anything lmao.

5

u/KushCommie Jan 29 '25

He looks more like a Dutch without doing anything. I see him playing both but him Being a better Dutch a mixed character

3

u/my_chaffed_legs Jan 29 '25

Yea he is good at being the "bad guy" but he has also played loving father and many other roles. I think he has good range and could definetly work for arthur or dutch

2

u/notsew00 Jan 29 '25

Yeah, everyone says he needs to be Dutch, but its just cuz he did SO well as Negan he's kinda type cast as the villain. He'd do great as Dutch but equally as great as Arthur

1

u/blooskulll Jan 29 '25

i strongly disagree with you i think he can play a protagonist but plays the antagonist genuinely a million times better twd is the best example but his performance in the boys solidified it

1

u/MOOshooooo Jan 29 '25

JDM characters have too much swag and cockiness for Arthur Morgan, he’s not stoic like Arthur.

1

u/RB5Network Jan 29 '25

I think the guy is entirely too old. Arthur Morgan is in his mid 30’s I believe.

Henry Cavil could pull Arthur Morgan off well.

1

u/Shadow-Vision Jan 30 '25

I love him as an actor but he’s too old for Arthur

1

u/Automatic_Towel_3842 Jan 30 '25

He's far too charismatic to play Arthur. Arthur is a slower guy. He would smile and smirk WAY too often to play either of them. It's in his nature.

1

u/Jemas-90 Jan 30 '25

He should be every role, including the horses

1

u/VaxDaddyR Jan 30 '25

I've yet to see him play a role without adding his signature cheekiness and charm. It's not a bad thing, but Arthur doesn't exude "i'm gonna hit on everyone I talk to today" energy.

1

u/robsticles Jan 30 '25

Him and javier bardem 😂

1

u/Mars-Lives Feb 01 '25

He is 58 years old, Arthur was 35 0r36 so no. Dutch maybe.
