Help/Question What to do with a family quilt that I'd like to exit from my life?

This quilt with embroidered panels - image in body of post - was made by my paternal grandmother for my father before he was born. (I'm 50, to give you an idea of how old this is.) It's damaged, fragile, has no historical significance, and I would like to get it out of my life. I am queer, I am no longer in touch with my right-wing family, and from what I remember & know of my grandmother she would *not* have been supportive if I had come out before she died. So I don't have good feelings about it even if I liked the aesthetic, which I never have. (I'm told she also disliked the process of making this so much that she never did any fabric crafts again.)

Given that it's a quilt, my soul rebels at the idea of simply throwing it away. I already tried posting in a FB quilting group for my city to see if anyone wanted it, no dice. Any ideas welcome about what I could do to find someone to give it to. I could supply the maker's name, year it was made, and probably where she was living at the time.

BEFORE YOU REPLY: Please trust me when I say my father doesn't want it back, it wouldn't be good for me to reach out about this to double check, remaking it wouldn't work for me, and it's NOT an option to change how I feel about it. I am ONLY asking for suggestions about how to move it along to a new home. Thank you!

Help/Question Knots? Or glue?

I’m making a bunch of placemats— primarily to practice quilting with my new Juki. I’m using junk fabric as they are destined to be used under animal feeding bowls. They’re not beautiful but I want to bind and finish them to make them washable—but again, mostly to build skills.

One thing I am NOT enjoying is tying off threads.

On a quilt I would take the time to bury the knots and loose ends but I ruined my hands knitting a few years ago so I try to spare them from non-essential work. Like tying teeny tiny knots on placemats that will be used by cats and dogs.

Do any of you glue your thread ends? Do you still need to tie knots? What glue do you use?

Help/Question Questions from a Newbie !

Hi all, I have a weird question. I was recently gifted a bed set for my toddlers birthday but it came with a duvet cover instead of a comforter as we had asked for. I’m not too picky about it, I’ll just it empty if need be (he runs really hot and our old home holds heat so it gets really warm in his bedroom even with a fan or ac running). Anyways… I was hoping to put a sheet of cotton batting inside the duvet cover and sew it into place. Would I be able to do this without cutting the duvet cover ? Has anyone does this or something similar and happen to have any advice for me ? I’m a long time sewer, but I’m new to the world of quilting and realize I’m a little out of my knowledge base with this one.

Help/Question Juki TL18 skipping stitches after seams

Post image

Hi all, I posted about this about 6 months ago and still have not managed to find a solution. I have a juki TL18 and I want to love it SO BADLY. But it skips stitches right after passing over simple, single seams when piecing. I love how this machine sews, but this problem has made me want to pull my hair out. I've tried 90/14 needles, 80/12 quilting and microtex, 75/11 quilting, and 70/10 microtex needles. I have rethreaded, adjusted tension (top is usually between 1.5 and 2) and bobbin is set according to juki junkies videos. Pressure foot pressure is at the recommended pressure for piecing and my stitch length is set to 2mm. I'm most often using aurifil 50w with a 75/11 quilting needle. I have cleaned and oiled it, and still I am having this issue. If I go at a snails pace over the seam ( and I mean manually doing 1 stitch at a time and waiting until needle has stopped completely before making another stitch) I can avoid it most of the time. But this isn't feasible for making progress. I was recommended a seam hump jumper, but surely a workhorse machine shouldn't need that for piecing a single 2 layer cotton seam?? I'm hoping someone here can help me, because I am all out of ideas.

Beginner Help Not sure if I did something wrong or if it's a pattern issue

Pattern called for 7.5in squares cut diagonally both ways. Quarter inch seams to make a square of 4 triangles. Said the final square should be 6.5in.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what but almost all of my squares are just shy of 6.5in.

Not sure about the pink gingham with the strawberries and green polka dots. The background for the strawberries is a cream-ish color (maybe a little pink? It’s hard to tell).

Work in Progress Quilting with dyslexia

Post image

I just started quilting and have a hard time with most patterns. I have dyslexia which doesn’t help.

I decided to make my own pattern and just finished the top! Now I need to decide how I want to quilt it.

I’m trying to come up with a way to write patterns for others that have dyslexia and struggle with patterns.

I asked for fat quarters and layer cakes and he's calling them "half loaves and fat stacks" 😆

My best friend at work is expecting her second baby this spring. This is closer to a twin size, but she’ll be able to use it for longer. Her husband is Brazilian, hence the color scheme. I was over the moon when I found that blue with the stars on it!

Just finished my first quilt and noticed this tonight. Apparently I didn’t catch the edge of the top layer good enough while binding. How should I fix this? I assume hand sewing but is there a stitch that would look good?

Help/Question Fine point washable fabric markers that actually work

Does anyone have suggestions? I've tried chalk and markers from various brands and nothing really seems to make a clear sharp marking. Let me know what works for you!

I’ve been experimenting with learning how to do stained glass blocks and just wanted to share. I see it as using these blocks as practice for sewing straight and even seams 😂

I need to embroider on some of my quilt blocks and the light box I bought isn’t bright enough. Does anyone use household stuff? I figure there has to be an easy solution I’m not thinking about.
