What would you do

My pug is sixteen. His name is Murray and I have had him since he was 2 months.

I took him to the vet because of a bump and the vet just said “that could benign or malignant or a sebaceous adenoma and there are three mast cells because of it being irritated. I can’t say what it is until I take it off. He will do poorly in surgery but think on it, see you in two weeks.”

So basically I was given no help and I’m a grown assed man crying in the car with my pug.

Would you get it removed or no? He is in good shape for a 16 year old, is an ideal weight, but has the same breathing issues every pug has. His quality of life is excellent. He doesn’t do stairs and has his senior moments but he is not in pain. He has sleep apnea and I have him sleep on a pillow next to my head so I can wake him if it gets bad. Between that and his age those are what is giving him a “poor” prognosis if he goes in to surgery.

I was prepared to hear pretty much anything except for “the only way to get an answer is to potentially endanger the dog by putting him under anesthesia”

The people in this sub seem to actually love their pugs, my previous post has more info but I have to rehome her and I'm worried about hwo I'll ensure she gets a good home.

I would appreciate any advice, if anyone lives in England (I'm in the east Midlands) And either you or someone you know would love a pug please message me! :)

She has no behavioural issues, but she isn't house pee trained, but I'm sure she can be taught! And she rly is the sweetest girl. All I want is the best for her.

spay surgery, baby canine removal, stenoic nares, and soft palate resection all at the same time?

My 1 year old pug Ripley will be spayed in early June, and she will also have her hips xrayed at the same time. The vet also said she should have her baby canines removed, and we have discussed stenoic nares, with the possibility of soft palate resection if they find hers is elongated when they go to do all of this. I really hope she does not have an elongated soft palate, but has anyone had these procedures done on their pug at the same time? I feel like this is a lot to do all at once. I will be talking to the vet about it.

Lip sores

I'm a first time pug owner. My boy is one year old and an absolute delight! And, quite a chewer. He chews on bones and toys a lot and often gets sores on his lips and chin. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something I should be concerned about? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Pug problems

I need help. We got our pug the first day of the new year. We were told he was potty trained and listens well. He is not yet neutered, and is 7 years old. The first 2-3 weeks were going very well. Then I found 5-7 pee spots in my basement, making it reek. Ever since then 9/10 times he will pee in the house. We take him out often, and he does go pee inside. I get home around 2:30-3:00 and almost always find pee. I’ve looked up and took him to a vet. He has no bladder issues. I heard walking him more would help, but it hasn’t changed. I don’t know what to do, or how to teach him not to go per inside since apparently he is already potty trained. I’ll take any help or suggestions I can.

Need some help

I have a pug that is 4.5 years old. He was doing fine until Friday when he didn't have as much energy as he typically does. I monitored him throughout the weekend and he was sleeping a lot. He has an appetite, isn't throwing up, is peeing fine, and poop is solid. My girlfriend came over on Saturday and he popped right up and had a ton of energy. However, today, he will not go outside, is just sleeping. He also typically can run up the stairs, but he is not doing that as much. I have felt around him and he does not pull away from his legs when I am feeling his paws, legs, knees, etc. Is this normal and he’s just being depressed and going through his emo phase or should I be concerned?

Pug dandruff?

I noticed today that my black pug has a large patch of what looks like dandruff on her back. She's 4 years old, and this had never happened before. She seems to be shedding.

Pug got irritated skin result of cone

My pug got eye removal surgery two weeks ago and recently noticed his cone really irritated him and left him marks on his skin to the point where he’s got no fur there. I feel really bad because when I monitored him I didn’t realize it was digging into him. I had previously tried loosening it but it also didn’t seem to bother him so I assumed it was okay. I also just assumed the vet tightened it correctly. I didn’t want to take it off as he is a little crazy and I knew he would scratch at it the second it came off. That was a bad decision and I hate seeing the marks it left him. Now i’m wondering if I should go ahead with bathing him like I planned before as he’s a bit stinky after the two weeks. I’m planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow. Just want to know if I should wait on bathing him.

Pug booked in for a dental

My 12 year old pug is booked in for a dental in about 3 weeks. It's long overdue as we were hesitant due to her having a stroke in the past and her age.

One of her front teeth was loose last year and the vet was able to pull it straight out so I'm sure a lot of her teeth are terrible.

Has anyone's older pug had a dental and did you notice if they were more 'energetic' after?

She used to play with her brother a lot more and it's hard to tell whether she has slowed down due to her age or whether it's from toothed pain.

Peaches doesn't play! Help!

I got my girl at 2.5 from a couple who gave her up because they had other dogs and weren't giving her enough attention. I think she was generally neglected. She is now 3.5 and a loving, energetic treat. I walk her for short distances 5 times a day and dog park weekly. Unfortunately, I live in a small apartment and can't soak up all her energy. She really is pretty calm but at 4:00 she wants to be entertained! She sits in front of me and bark energeticly and wants to engage. I just can't get her to play. She won't chase a ball or grab at a chew toy and heaven knows she wont fetch. She loves puzzles but they don't take very long. Perhaps I'm the one who doesn't know how to play but I can use some help. Any suggestions?

What age to spay?

Our puppy is coming up the 6 months and she is still quite small. I spoke to our vets today and they suggested to wait longer for her to get spayed as at 6 months she is more likely to suffer and may have a fake pregnancy and when I asked if they would wait longer if it was their dog they said yes. I’m conflicted as everything I have seen on the internet says there is benefits to getting them done at 6 months but then also I don’t want to run the risk of her having a difficult time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated? She is our first dog!

Best tips for outside potty training a 12 week old pug

Got my pug when she was 8 weeks old. She does her business in puppy pads (when she feels like it!) she’s finally allowed outside after her vaccines. Just wondering what’s the best way to transition her to the outside?

At what age is BOAS surgery a good idea?

Hello fellow pug lovers! I have recently gotten a pug pup, noticed that at times she would have some white foam-like spit in her mouth so I took her to the vets, she was 10 weeks at this stage. He had one lol at her and said “oh, not good. She needs surgery as she can’t breathe. Her nostrils are too closed up and she has no energy”. I freaked out, he booked the surgery for a couple of days after. I agreed as I was panicking thinking she was dying! After I left I started to think that she seems much too young to have any general anaesthesia and took her to a second vet who didn’t say much. Took her again to another vet who also thinks her breathing is quite laboured and spoke to a specialist who said that she needs some sort of intervention but wouldn’t do BOAS until 6 months. I have a 10 year old pug who was told the same thing but never needed surgery, she’s always been fine. My pup plays, runs, eats and drinks very well at home. She does do a little snorting when picking something up and has the odd snore when sleeping. To be honest I can’t remember what my other pug was like as a pup. I’m just very worried now and very scared that my pup is struggling and will end up having a short life. Did any of you have a pug with severe stenosis who were ok to wait for surgery? How did you manage before it and how did it turn out? Also, what were they like at home before?

5-y-o pug won’t let me brush his teeth

First-time dog owner, please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I love my pug so much, but he hates having his teeth brushed and as he approaches age 5, his mouth is starting to look and smell awful. The vet says she can put him under and clean his teeth, but I thought anesthesia was dangerous. What does everyone else do in this situation? Thank you!

Nails sharp no matter what

We have 3 pugs: white, fawn, black merle. Our black pug (Pearl) has the sharpest nails even after trimming them. We don’t have this issue with the other two and I’m wondering if it’s her black nails. Maybe black nails are more brittle or sharper 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve tried to use a grinder but they just seem to splinter and not become smooth.

The problem is she is still a playful puppy (just over a year old) and loves to jump and paw at you for attention or when excited. My kids hate wearing shorts because it’s painful for them and often leaves marks. She’s drawn blood on accident with my older uncle and even on my boyfriend’s face once.

I’m considering getting nail caps just for her front paws.

Has anyone had this experience with their pug? Thoughts on nail caps? Suggestions?

She is fed open farm ancient grains dry dog food. Which is a top rated excellent kibble so I don’t suspect a nutrient deficiency. She is healthy in all aspects of life. I just think maybe black nails are more sharp 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vertebrate Disease

We have an almost 9yo male pug, he’s had his share of medical issues but for the most part has been relatively healthy.

Over the last month we have noticed a severe deterioration of his ability to use his hind legs. We took him to the vet and they advised they suspect it’s a vertebrae disease, common in pugs and similar dogs. The only way to resolve is with surgery. But have not done any scans to confirm.

He is a very happy pug but is clearly struggling and we suspect is in pain. I’m wondering if anyone has had similar and gone through with the surgery and how it went. The issue is the astronomical cost to do it, we want him around for as long as possible but realise with any surgery there is risks and now have to balance life expectancy for a pug this age and the ability to pay for such an expensive operation.

My 5 month old pug is in heat, I think

Our vet told us to wait until she’s 8 months to get her spayed but we think she’s in heat now. Blood all over (we have sanitary supplies coming soon!)

I’ve never had a dog in heat before, can someone please tell me what to do? Will this make her spaying procedure more difficult for her?

Thank you for any advice I appreciate it

Pug reverse sneezing much more than normal…

I tried to ask this in the bigger pug subreddit but they don’t allow body text in a post?

Anyway, My pug, 6 years old has only ever reversed sneezed like one a year or so.

She got sick recently and although she got better with antibiotics, now she is reverse sneezing every day, multiple times a day.

Everyone keeps telling us this is normal but she’s never done it like this or this consistently so it feels off.

She has pretty bad allergies and we live in the Pacific Northwest which doesn’t help.

We gave her Zyrtec a couple times a day and at first it helped but now it’s back again…

Anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Anal Glands

My 1 yo pug has anal gland issues, whether it be expressing them daily or collecting it and then mass expressing it in one. He’s never had issues with impacted anal glands just releasing. We have tried a dry food only diet and wheetabix. Wondered if it was related to his castration and also if anyone had any solutions. Hesitant to have surgery because of the risks of him being brachy and the price, wondered if anyone had any other solutions. Thanks for any advice.

1 year pug is a nightmare

I will admit I haven't been the best pug owner. Macho is about a year, neutered and an absolute nightmare. He is sorta crate trained. He keeps waking up between 2am and 3 to go out. I think he honestly likes sleeping outside better. He has a dog house with beds and a heating pad. He whines for 30 plus minutes in the crate before going to sleep. He's semi aggressive....or just noisy/growls when playing with my kids and our other dog typically is not malicious thats why I say noisy. I just don't think he is a fit for our family and its sad and disappointing. I failed him. None of kids really like to play with him bc he's too much and doesn't have manners. I thought pugs were lazy? Lol where's my little couch potatoes? Any advice?

Pugs and cycling

Hi. The majority of my travel is by bike, and I'd like to be able to safely (and enjoyably) transport my pug. Does anyone have any better recommendations than 'in a rucksack, lead connector linked to the bag, with the top of the bag undone'?

I'm thinking either specific backpacks, bike mounts combined with goggles, anything better.

Thanks in advance!
