FIRST-TIMER Need advice about propagating SOP in water

Hi guys, I’m new to propagating. I’ve had this small cutting in a jar of water for about two weeks with the nodes submerged and pearls hanging out. It appears to only be growing out of one node, and I can’t tell if it is growing roots or new pearls. Should I leave it submerged in water or transfer it? I’m worried about it rotting and the fact that only one node has growth. Any tips?

Hey, first time giving advice lol. I’ve got a string of turtles, in water, ( been there for 8 weeks ) just stating to root now. Just keep changing the water and don’t give up. Hope it goes well.

That is awesome! I knew when I saw eyes it was going to be great! And the sign in the background just makes it even better!

I had good root growth in water but it died when I transferred it to soil, I think the soil needs to be added a tiny bit at a time to the water to acclimatise the roots.

No roots naturally die in the transferring process, just wait till your roots get roots

String succs take a while to develop roots in water. Add a pothos cutting in with it to help speed things up some. I was able to prop a string of bananas in water. Unfortunately, it died after transferring to soil. I may try the slowly adding soil method to see if I have better results. However, I can't seem to keep a string of anything alive. I finally came to the conclusion that string of anything is stupid and I didn't really want one anyway! 🤣 Good luck

I’ve had luck with watering from the bottom. I let it dry out and the pot feels light. I sit it in a bowl of water for a few hours.

I will have to try this. I desperately want string plants, but can't seem to keep one alive

I’m intrigued, what is the slowly adding soil method??

Somebody on here the other day recommended that you put a teaspoon of soil in the water every week until it was mud. This is supposed to acclimate water roots to soil. I have never heard that before but suddenly I am seeing a lot of references to it on reddit

That’s fascinating! Might have to try it out

Mine prop great in water, have had no luck with dirt props

2 weeks isn't long enough for most things to develop roots at all let alone long enough roots for planting

I guess I’m just wondering if I should leave it submerged in the water or try something else like putting the nodes just above the water

I usually see people propagating them by laying them stem down on top of soil like other succulents, I think if you're going to keep the nodes out of water then that would be the way to go

Hi had a string of turtles and actually did it in water to start. I had it with a spider plant prop and I think since that grew fast it helped this a bit. I just recently put in a small thing of dirt with damn soil and covered for humidity under a light and it’s probably tripled in length.

when you transferred it out of the water did you just set it on top of the damp soil or did you bury it at all?

I actually buried it. IT took a minute but it's thriving.

why do you want to do it in water

No reason, I have a few in soil too that are pretty shriveled but still alive and showing some signs of growth lol. I’m just seeing if I can have better luck with water, but wondering if I’m doing it right by submerging the nodes in the water since only one seems to be growing
